Politics / Lagos Gov Poll: Bode George, Akerele-bucknor, Others Endorse Lp’s Rhodes-vivour by Toneypen247(m): 7:19pm On Mar 06, 2023
…Threat to voters divisive politics of annihilation

By Dapo Akinrefon

Members of Omo Eko Pataki consisting of Chief Olabode George, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Senator Kofoworaola Akerele-Bucknor and Mrs Onikepo Oshodi, on Monday, frowned against threats to voters who refuse to support a particular political party describing it as divisive politics of annihilation of innocent Nigerians.

They also endorsed Labour Party, LP, Governorship Candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, saying it is time for renewal and rebirth in Lagos State.

The group also alleged that there plans to ensure the LP candidate is taken out of circulation before Saturday’s polls warning that it does not want a repeat of what happened to late Funsho Williams in Lagos State.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, leader of the group, Chief George expressed worry over threats being issued against voters suspected to be willing to vote against incumbency.

The group which subtly endorsed the LP governorship candidate, urged Lagos residents to be wary of voting for the All Progressives Congress, APC during the March 11 governorship election.

George said: “We have called you here today, on the auspices of the Omo Eko Pataki, a concerned vanguard of true born and bonafide Lagosians, to brief you on issues of salient national importance, as we head towards the final lap of the 2023 general elections.

“It is expedient for us as major stakeholders, to let Lagosians, Nigerians, and the international community be aware of developments both in the aftermath of the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections, as well as raise some pertinent concerns about the Governorship, and the State Assembly elections scheduled for this Saturday, March 11, 2023.

Of paramount interest and concern is the issue of threat to lives by cronies and criminal elements, who we presume are being unleashed on innocent citizens who are willing to exercise their civic rights, to effect a positive change to their lives, the lives of their unborn children, using the civilised option of the ballot box, universally approved as opposed to the option of anarchy.

As we speak, there are grand designs, to provoke the peace loving Nigerians, whose resolve is to effect change through the ballot box on Saturday, as threats are being issued against voters suspected to be willing to vote against incumbency.

“For the avoidance of doubt, a particular video has gone virile, on the social media, which showed a weird character, suspected to be one of the agents of the state, threatening brimstone and fire against anybody, particularly of South East extraction (Igbo), to dare come out on election day to vote for the Labour Party.

In the words of the state agent in the video clip, ‘It’s either Sanwo Olu or nothing in Lagos’

“To this disposition, we, the Omo Eko Pataki, say it is the most heinous crime against humanity in this 21st century, and condemn such in all its entirety.

“We ask, who gave these characters the institutional authority and powers, to query the right of Nigerians to exercise their civic responsibility?
“We reject this divisive politics of annihilation of innocent Nigerians, which seek to create anarchy and provoke anger of the citizenry. We wish to remind all the non-Lagosians agents of the Lagos State Government, that Nigerians have lived together in peace, irrespective of any political party in power,”

Going down memory lane of how non Lagosians contested and won elections in Lagos, he said: “A good example was the formation of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons in 1944 by Herbert Macaulay, its first National President, with Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe as its first secretary.

“Elected candidates in Lagos constituencies, on the platform, of NCNC were Papa J.M. Johnson and Papa T.O.S. Benson who represented Lagos Island and Mainland respectively at the parliament. They defeated Papa L.B.J. Dosunmu (who later became Justice Dosunmu) and Papa Onitiri, candidates of the Action Group (AG).

“The NCNC was made up of a long list of nationalist parties, cultural associations, and labour movements that formed it. The party, at the time, was the second to take a concerted effort to create a true nationalist party.

“It embraced different sets of groups from the religious, to tribal and to trade groups such as the Egbe Omo Oduduwa and the Nigerian Union of Teachers. Azikiwe became its second president and Dr. M.I. Okpara, its president, when Azikiwe went on to become the first indigenous President of Nigeria.

“The party was considered the third prominent political party formed in Nigeria after a Lagos-based party, the Nigerian National Democratic Party and the Nigerian Youth Movement formed by Professor Eyo Ita who became the Deputy National President of NCNC before he left the party to form his own political party called the National Independence Party.

“The NCNC was primarily associated with the Igbo, yet it was originally formed by a Yoruba in a territory or sphere of operation controlled by a particular person or group.”

“We wish to inform Nigerians about the heinous plan, to secretly eliminate the Labour Party Governorship Candidate, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the latest move by the take Lagos occupiers, to take him out of circulation before the election on Saturday.

“We, hereby, warn that, should anything happen to this vibrant bonafide Lagosian, who fate has thrown up to free our dear state from the stranglehold of marauders, Nigerians should know who to hold.

“We call on Nigerians to be wary of taking yet another wrong step to vote for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, government in the impending governorship election on March 11, 2023.
“Without any equivocation, we say under the watch of the APC government, our country has been bestride in widening uncertainties. There are no certitudes anywhere as lawlessness defines the national landscape.

“We cannot continue with the old ways. The system is now devoid of stabilizing balance. We must rework it. We must push towards a renewal and a rebirth. This is the time for us to have a change of vision through an electoral overhaul.

“We equally urge the electorate in Lagos to go out in their numbers on Saturday, to vote against the plundering that has bedeviled our prosperous state for over two decades as adequate security is assured to everyone out to exercise their civic responsibility.

“Lagos has remained a best example of a conquered territory where an Iragbiji native dwells like an obscene Persian monarch determining who becomes a councilor, who becomes a local government chairman, who becomes a House of Assembly member, who becomes a Representative, a Senator and a Governor.

“All these he does by compromising all agencies and organs of state, including the electoral commission itself. We also call on INEC, to ensure the use of transformational BVAS regime, for the transparency of the exercise, a departure from the February 25 archaic system, where result sheets were moved manually from polling units”, he said.

Education / LASU Reopens Gate Shut By Protesting Students Over Soldiers Maltreatment by Toneypen247(m): 4:45pm On Mar 06, 2023
The management of Lagos State University, Ojo, has reopened the gates of the institution which were shut by protesting students.

Vanguard gathered that the Iyana-Oba and Ojo gates of the institution were shut, in the early hours of Monday, by protesting students thereby preventing both vehicular and pedestrian movement.

LASU student union executives led their colleagues to protest against soldiers’ assaults on them during the presidential election of February 25, 2023.

However, as of press time, the gates had been reopened and normalcy had returned.

The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Olaniyi Jeariogbe, who confirmed that calm had returned to the campus, said they have been there for many hours trying to get in and exit.

He said, “We have been here for some hours. The students locked up both gates, and everywhere is filled with vehicles trying to come in and exit. The security men said the students shut the gates because their executives and some students were beaten by soldiers last week. We are all waiting at the gate, no movement.”

Politics / Result-viewing Portal Now Working, Ready For Gubernatorial Polls – INEC by Toneypen247(m): 5:09am On Mar 06, 2023
The Independent National Electoral Commission has given assurance that its result-viewing portal that suffered glitches during the presidential and National Assembly elections is now up and running.

It said the IReV portal would be deployed during the governorship and House of Assembly elections on Saturday.

The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said this in an interview with our correspondent on Sunday.

INEC had received backlash from political parties, observers, individuals and various interest groups for failing to upload polling unit results to the portal prior to the collation.

Some political parties and individuals had relied on the glitch to demand the cancellation of the results.

Meanwhile, checks on Sunday, by our correspondent, revealed that INEC has so far uploaded 161,624 results from 176, 846 polling units, eight days after the presidential poll.

The figure represents 92 per cent of results from all the polling units.
As of the time of filing this report, the electronic transmission of results was still ongoing.

Nigerians had expected that the election results would be uploaded on election day as promised by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

However, INEC came under fire for its failure to upload results to its viewing portal, which led to the walkout of some parties agents on Monday at the National Collation Centre.

Checks by our correspondent on Sunday revealed that the results of all the polling units had yet to be uploaded on INEC website.

According to the commission, BolaTinubu, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, won 8.8 million votes, while main opposition candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi had 6.9 million and 6.1 million votes, respectively.

Speaking on the issue, Oyekanmi stated, “The technical glitches that affected it on February 25 have now been resolved. It will be deployed for the governorship and state Assembly elections scheduled for March 11.”

On the calls on INEC to cancel the election, Oyekanmi said, “The aggrieved parties have a right and an opportunity to ventilate their grievances at the Election Petition Tribunal if they are dissatisfied with the outcome of an election. So far, in the case of the just concluded presidential election, two political parties have openly rejected the outcome and have already indicated their intention to do just that – go to court.”

Interesting time ahead.
It is disappointing to observe that the same INEC, which electronically transmitted results successfully in previous elections held(Ekiti and Osun state), suddenly lost its vigour to do the same during the presidential election, resorting to the old fraud-prone manual collation of the 2023 presidential election results. This is to let you know that the few corrupt politicians who destroyed this country want things to remain the same for them.💔

However, we are watching them. Saturday gubernatorial elections must be free and fairly conducted to save the image of our soiled and hybrid democracy.

Politics / BVAS: Saturday’s Gov Polls Might Be Postponed Over LP, PDP Court Order by Toneypen247(m): 4:55am On Mar 06, 2023
By Omeiza Ajayi, ABUJA

Saturday’s Governorship and State Assembly elections across the country could be postponed, except the appellate court reverses itself on the relief it granted the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party LP counterpart, Peter Obi.

The court had last week stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC from tampering with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS deployed in last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly Elections.

Obi in his application moved by his team of lawyers, led by Mr Alex Ejesieme, SAN, sought six principal reliefs, while Atiku’s lawyer, Adedamola Faloku, sought seven prayers from the tribunal.

Among the reliefs sought by the plaintiffs was: An order granting the applicants permission to do electronic scanning and make photocopies of voter’s registration, and ballot papers used in the conduct of the election for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria held on the 25th day of February 2023.

“An order granting leave to the applicants to carry out Digital Forensic Inspection of BVAS machines used for the conduct of the 25th February 2023 election for the Office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The plaintiffs also sought an order restraining “the First Respondent from tampering with the information embedded in the BVAS machines until the due inspection was conducted and Certified True Copies of them issued”.

The court granted the reliefs and with regards to the BVAS, said; “That leave is hereby granted to the applicants to carry out Digital Forensic Inspection of BVAS machines used for the conduct of the 25th February 2023 Election for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Elections threatened

However, INEC is expected to deploy the same BVAS for the subnational elections, meaning that the commission will have to reconfigure them and make them fit for purpose.

Vanguard checks revealed that it takes an average of five days to configure the BVAS, meaning that the commission has to begin the process of reconfiguration latest by Tuesday.

A source in one of the state offices of the commission who did not want his name mentioned due to the sensitivity of the issue however said the commission would be approaching the courts to vacate the order.

He said: There are over 176,000 polling units. The BVAS is polling units specific, which means that you cannot do a mass reconfiguration. The machines have to be reconfigured individually and those take an average of five days.

“If we leave the BVAS as the court has ordered, it simply means that we cannot use them for the state elections. So, we are approaching the court to seek a way out”.

Very correct. You should not generalize with a few casese, but did you also play your role to sensitize your people when they generalise with unguarded statements online about yorubas ( did they put any clause to show that they don't refer to all yorubas) on certain issues?
Go to the tribal comments on nairaland, you cannot say your folks are not also guilty of the offence you just pointed out. I still think you should spend most of your time teaching them first before correcting others.

Both tribes are guilty of what you are claiming. Do you feel it is just one-sided? For every cause, there is an effect. If we are to judge in this case, the Igbo face the worst of tribal attacks daily. I know how many times I have been abused tribally on naira land just for airing my opinion on a subject matter. I will be tagged as Ipob or Biafra. Stop pointing accusation finger bro. It is worst from both end and the igbo face the attack the most. Don't be sentimental here.

Just for supporting the LP gubernatorial candidate for lagos state, I can count out the nonsense that have been said about the Igbo tribe because the candidate mother is igbo. I guess you didn't see that angle.

So you think they can win their quest by fueling the "supposed hatred" ? For e.g will calling their land 'No man's Land foster love? If Hausa call Enugu no man's Land we all know what you will do.
If you are a guest in another man's place it is expexted that you play low, you will not win by going against your host. It happens everywhere even overseas. Just teach them this fact.
I remember back then as an undergraduate, we taught the logical argument on inductive and deductive reasoning. While the former depends on probable ground to an objective claim, the latter makes use of general to particular instances. However, inductive reasoning have been criticised as having less substantial data that is not worth making a general claim.

That Mr john claims that rice is bad
Mr Charles claims that rice is bad
Mr Wilson claims that rice is bad,
Will it be logical to conclude that since all characters are men, it, therefore, follows that all men claim that rice is bad?

This is the same scenario you have been portraying bro. You are generalizing from particular instances. I watched a video of MC Oluomo and some others guys threatening the igbo people in lagos against voting another party. Will it be logical for me to conclude that since all the major characters are Yoruba by tribe, it therefore follows that all yoruba are against igbos or hate igbos?

This is a simple logic. The claim you keep making is not substantial and worth generAlizing. Everyone isn't the same and thus, it is important to learn the difference.

Thanks.

Courtesy goes a long way in enhancing relationships they should caution their utterances to their host. They should improve upon their manners.
C'mon you should know where and who you should be directing this message to. With the whole happening in Lagos and the video evidence in the internet, who do you think instigates tribalism?

Why have the Igbos always been painted as the villain in every political activity? Haba!! Search your conscience brother. The hate towards igbo is too much.
