Outrage after S African minister denied entry to Israel South Africa demands explanation from Tel Aviv after minister is denied visa to visit Israel for diplomatic work. Johannesburg, South Africa - The government of South Africa has expressed outrage after Israel's decision to deny a visa to Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande. Clayson Monyela, Deputy Director General of Department of International Relations and Cooperation, told Al Jazeera on Thursday the Israeli government needed to offer a reason for the snubbing. "We are taking it up through the proper channels. "We need to receive a proper explanation for the denial of a visa to a sitting cabinet minister," Monyela said. The minister was scheduled to travel to the occupied Palestinian territories from April 25-29. He was scheduled to secure further collaboration with the University of Johannesburg and institutions in Palestine. Nzimande's spokesperson told local media that the denial of the visa had caused a "serious diplomatic problem". Naeem Jeenah, Director of Afro-Middle East Centre, based in Johannesburg, described the snubbing as "surprising" considering the two countries' growing trade relations. Jeenah said the Palestinian solidarity movement in South Africa "would be thrilled" with Israel's decision "because South Africa now has to respond to this matter". Arthur Lenk, the Israeli ambassador in Pretoria, told Al Jazeera that South African officials routinely visit the West Bank through Israel. Lenk would not be drawn into discussing why specifically Nzimande's visa application was denied, though he described the minister as being "very vocal on a range of issues connected to Israel, South Africa and my region". The ambassador said the decision to deny the visa was made in Israel. "The decision came from Jerusalem," Lenk said. Vocal critic of Israel But Jeenah said that anything the Israelis say on the matter "could really only make the situation worse". The Palestinian embassy in South Africa described the decision as "racist". "We take note by this aggressive action that Israel is trying to implement the same rule as in the previous apartheid regime of South Africa," the embassy said in a statement. The Palestinian lobby group Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS-South Africa) released a statement saying it's "more confident than ever that its time to expel the Israeli Ambassador from South Africa". "Israel cannot want to tell us who our friends should be, where we should travel and who we can speak with." BDS said. Nzimande has been a vocal critic of Israel. His spokesperson said on Thursday the minister would call on all higher education institutions to cut ties with their counterparts in Israel. "We must just boycott Israel," Nkwanyana reportedly said. South Africa currently has full diplomatic relations with Israel and recognises Israel within the borders demarcated by the United Nations (UN) in 1948. In 2012, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Co-operation, Ebrahim Ebrahim discouraged South Africans from visiting Israel. "We do not prevent them. We say we discourage them." Suspects In Paris Magazine Attack Killed 17:19, UK, Friday 09 January 2015 The brothers suspected of massacring staff at the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris have been killed and their hostage freed. Gunshots and explosions have been heard at the Dammartin-en-Goele factory where brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi had been holed up with a 26-year-old male hostage for hours. According to media reports in France the brothers - who came out firing - have been killed and their hostage was freed safely. A helicopter which had been hovering nearby landed on top of the building during the raid. Sky's Ian Woods, who is on the scene, said: "There were several bursts of gunfire that lasted about 10 seconds. Since then we've heard four or five explosions." Gunfire And Explosions At Siege After this there was around a minute of silence, followed by further explosions. Woods added: "Clearly this is the end game of this operation." Several ambulances have been seen travelling at speed in the area of the factory complex following the explosions, close to the outskirts of Paris and near to Charles De Gaulle airport. It came as six explosions were heard at the Paris supermarket where at least six hostages have been held by gunmen. Reports say some of the hostages have been freed, and the hostage-taker killed. Minutes before the Dammartin-en-Goele operation, dozens of workers who had been trapped on the industrial estate by the stand- off were seen leaving the area in their cars accompanied by a police escort. This was followed by a number of cars heading in the other directions towards the factory, filled with individuals wearing balaclavas. The Kouachi brothers had been surrounded at the print works by special forces officers for several hours. They took refuge in the building with a hostage after being forced off the road into Paris by a police roadblock. Earlier in the day they broke cover from an area northeast of the capital and stole a car, before heading towards Paris. A police chase took place and they were forced off the road close to the city's outskirts. |

Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death. It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing. Her husband's friend Richards was there, too, near her. It was he who had been in the newspaper office when intelligence of the railroad disaster was received, with Brently Mallard's name leading the list of "killed." He had only taken the time to assure himself of its truth by a second telegram, and had hastened to forestall any less careful, less tender friend in bearing the sad message. She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her. There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair. Into this she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul. She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which someone was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves. There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other in the west facing her window. She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams. She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength. But now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought. There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it? She did not know; it was too subtle and elusive to name. But she felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the air. Now her bosom rose and fell tumultuously. She was beginning to recognize this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back with her will--as powerless as her two white slender hands would have been. When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under the breath: "free, free, free!" The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright. Her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body. She did not stop to ask if it were or were not a monstrous joy that held her. A clear and exalted perception enabled her to dismiss the suggestion as trivial. She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead. But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome. There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself. There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature. A kind intention or a cruel intention made the act seem no less a crime as she looked upon it in that brief moment of illumination. And yet she had loved him--sometimes. Often she had not. What did it matter! What could love, the unsolved mystery, count for in the face of this possession of self-assertion which she suddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being! "Free! Body and soul free!" she kept whispering. Josephine was kneeling before the closed door with her lips to the keyhole, imploring for admission. "Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door--you will make yourself ill. What are you doing, Louise? For heaven's sake open the door." "Go away. I am not making myself ill." No; she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window. Her fancy was running riot along those days ahead of her. Spring days, and summer days, and all sorts of days that would be her own. She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long. She arose at length and opened the door to her sister's importunities. There was a feverish triumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory. She clasped her sister's waist, and together they descended the stairs. Richards stood waiting for them at the bottom. Someone was opening the front door with a latchkey. It was Brently Mallard who entered, a little travel-stained, composedly carrying his grip- sack and umbrella. He had been far from the scene of the accident, and did not even know there had been one. He stood amazed at Josephine's piercing cry; at Richards' quick motion to screen him from the view of his wife. When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease--of the joy that kills. |

A Federal High Court in Lagos, Wednesday, ordered the State Security Service, SSS, to unseal the warehouse used by the All Progressives Congress, APC, as data centre. Justice Mohammed Yunusa also granted an interim order restraining the SSS from further shutting party’s data office or taking any step in connection with the property pending the determination of the substantive suit. SSS operatives had, last weekend, raided the building which the opposition party said was its data office at Allen Avenue, Lagos, arresting workers and confiscating documents and computer hard drives. The SSS said its action was based on a petition it received alleging “unwholesome activities” inside the building. “Based on this information, the service placed the building under surveillance and having been convinced that some unwholesome activities were going on in the building, it undertook a raid of the premises,” the SSS said in a statement Sunday. But the APC insists that the building was used for the collation of its members’ data. On Wednesday, the party, and its staff still under detention at the SSS office, filed an action before the court seeking an enforcement of their fundamental rights. In their application, the detained APC staff said they were only carrying out their legitimate duties of inputting data from the APC’s physical membership form into a digital database. In its assertion, the party said the action of the SSS in forcefully entering its data centre and vandalizing its physical and digital assets was a violation of its right to property. The APC also stated that the “brazen conduct” of the SSS and the Nigerian Police not only sought to intimidate the party’s staff and members, but also compromised the confidential information of millions of Nigerians who volunteered their personal information in accepting the party’s membership. The judge granted leave to the applicants to serve court processes to the respondents – the Nigerian police and the SSS – by substituted service, at their Lagos offices. The judge also ordered the respondents to produce the detained applicants (Chinedu Atuche, Fayemi Olaposi, Chika Augustine Onuchukwu, Ebun Ilori, and Esther Enemuwe) in court at the next adjourned date. Hearing of the matter was adjourned till November 28th. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/171969-court-orders-sss-unseal-apc-data-office.html |
Buhari lobbies Imo APC delegates with N1 million November 27, 2014Premium Times Muhammadu Buhari, APC presidential aspirant Despite his seemingly austere disposition, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, donated N1 million to the delegates of the party from Imo State to vote him during its December 10 national convention. Mr. Buhari, a former head of state, met with the delegates at the Regent Hotels, Owerri, during which he lobbied them to vote for him. He also visited the Imo State House of Assembly to lobby the APC members of the legislature who are statutory delegates to the convention. The presidential hopeful was accompanied by the Director General of his Campaign Organisation, Audu Ogbeh; a former President of Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Rotimi Akeredolu; and a former member of the House of Representatives, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba. One of Mr. Buhari’s opponents and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, had at the weekend given N8.5 million to the Sokoto State chapter of the APC. Mr. Abubakar, who was on national wide campaign, said N5 million was meant to facilitate the party’s activities while N2.5 million was for the 50 delegates from the state. Other aspirants jostling for the opposition party’s presidential ticket are Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso of Kano State and the founder of the Leadership newspaper, Sam Nda-Isaiah. Mr. Buhari had recently launched a crowd sourcing campaign on the social media to raise funds for the primaries. He is already generating funds online and offline to prosecute his presidential aspiration. The former head of state, who thrice contested to be president, had in October revealed how he took loan and borrowed from several banks to procure the APC presidential nomination and expression of interest form which cost N27.5 million. “It’s a pity I couldn’t influence this amount to be put down as in the case of ladies and the disabled that intend to participate. I always looked left and right in our meetings but I could not read sympathy, so I kept my trap,” Mr. Buhari said. “But I felt heavily sorry for myself because I don’t want to go and ask somebody to pay for my nomination forms because I always try to pay for myself at least for the nomination. “N27 million is a big sum, thankfully I have personal relationship with the manager of my bank in Kaduna and early this morning, I put an early call (and) I told him that very soon the forms are coming, so whether I am on red, or green or even black please honour it, otherwise I may lose the nomination.” He also said the cost of the forms was fixed to separate the men from the boys. The former military leader said, “I don’t expect you have N27 million under your bed. But I expect that there are Nigerians who will vouch for you any day and who are ready to stand for you any day and that is the result that we have obtained today.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/171951-buhari-lobbies-imo-apc-delegates-n1-million.html |

Nigerian govt lying about state of economy — Obasanjo November 26, 2014 Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday lambasted President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration over the state of the country’s economy, saying government was deceiving Nigerians with its claims of fantastic economic growth. “What the public know or see of the economy is not what the economy truly is,” the former president told guests in Abuja at the public presentation of an autobiography of the former Chairman Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission, ICPC, Mustapha Akanbi. “The economy is in the doldrums, if not in reverse. The often-quoted GDP (gross domestic product) growth neither reflects on the living condition of most of our people, nor on most of the indigenous industries and services where capacity utilization is almost 50 per cent,” he added. The Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had said during a recent media briefing in Abuja that “in spite of global uncertainty, the country’s economy continues to evolve with dynamism, stability and resilience riding on sound macroeconomic management, even in the face of oil price and quantity shocks.” According to Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, the government’s strong macroeconomic management capacity had resulted in the country’s GDP growth (estimated at 6.5 per cent in 2013) being one of the fastest in the world (26th), with the recent GDP rebasing making the country the largest economy in Africa ahead of South Africa. But the former president said the recent developments around the economy as a result of falling global oil prices are indications that such claims of superior economic performance are a farce, particularly the management of the proceeds from oil and gas resources, which shows the country did not adequately prepare rainy days. He blamed the poor economic situation in the country on corruption, adding that the non-investment and disinvestment in the oil and gas sector by the major international oil companies had added another dimension to the issue. Nigeria’s continued heavy dependence on oil resources, he noted, had not adequately prepared the country against any shock, pointing out that with the $78 per barrel benchmark proposed in the 2015 budget, it was clear the country would be in a bind if oil price fell to $75 per barrel. “We had not adequately prepared for the rainy days in the management of proceeds from oil and gas resources. With crude oil purchase by the U.S. from Nigeria going down by some 30 per cent in the last three years as a result of shale oil revolution, things are not looking up in the oil and gas sector, and hence, in the economy,” he noted. Referring to the prediction by the International Energy Agency, IEA, that global crude oil price would continue to fall through the first half of 2015 and even to the end of the year, Mr. Obasanjo said with the shale oil revolution and U.S. self-sufficiency in energy as well as possibility of her becoming a net exporter, the country must re-strategize to survive. If nothing is done to check the situation, the former president said the country may in future find it difficult to fund its budget and may have to borrow to pay salaries and allowances. Revenue allocations to states and local governments, he noted, had already drastically reduced in recent times, with capital projects at all levels drastically cut or stopped. Though the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, on Tuesday announced the immediate devaluation of the Naira by 8.38 per cent to stem crashing value of the national currency, Mr. Obasanjo warned that sooner or later the country may be compelled to drastically devalue again without any benefit to the commodity economy. “We will all sink deeper in poverty, except for those who have corruptly stashed money abroad and who will start to bring such illegal and illegitimate funds back home to harvest more Naira. All the economic gains of recent years and the rebuilding of the middle class may be lost. “In the end, more businesses will close down, business men and women, entrepreneurs and investors will incur more debts. Foreign investors may temporarily stop investing in a downturn economy. Because of the Naira depreciation, workers, particularly in the public sector, will ask for pay increase, which may be justified, but will sink us deeper in the swamp. “The scenario, which may sound alarmist, is hard to imagine, but the signs are there, and it would appear that those who should act are dancing foxtrot, while their trousers are catching fire,” Mr. Obasanjo said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/171944-nigerian-govt-lying-state-economy-obasanjo.html |
Jonathan to Obasanjo: I’m Nigeria’s best leader NOVEMBER 24, 2014 BY OLUSOLA FABIYI President Jonathan and Obasanjo President Goodluck Jonathan has described himself as the best leader to be produced by Nigeria. The President said no leader since the country gained independence in 1960 had done better than himself for the country. He, therefore, said the comment made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in which the ex- President described Jonathan’s performance as below average, was untrue. Jonathan said this in a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, in Abuja on Sunday. Okupe’s statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to comments made by a former President of this country, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, regarding the performance of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. “Obasanjo had at an event over the weekend declared that he rated the President Goodluck Jonathan administration ‘below average’. “We aver that Obasanjo’s comments are untrue, misleading and clearly do not tally with the facts on the ground. “We therefore wish to assert without equivocation that in terms of performance and achievements, no administration since 1960 when Nigeria gained independence from Britain, has done as much as that of President Jonathan.” He said that every discerning and unbiased Nigerian would definitely attest to this “as the evidence stare all of us in the face.” Okupe, who had also worked with the former President while in office, added that contrary to Obasanjo’s position, the Federal Government under Jonathan had performed excellently given the prevailing circumstances and resources available to it. He said while it was true that Nigeria had been faced with incidents of insurgency and terrorism, especially in the last few years, the Jonathan administration had successfully contained the initial widespread activities of the insurgents, which he said were prevalent in 12 states of the North, including the Federal Capital Territory. He added, “While it is true that the present activities of the terrorists in the three north- eastern states have become more deadly in mindless killings, kidnappings and supposed territorial seizures, government has made giant diplomatic strides with our neighbouring countries in order to checkmate the crisscrossing of the insurgents. “The military and other security agents, which have engaged the insurgents since inception, have done a great job in spite of recent challenges. “The truth of the matter which we must know and accept is that we have an internal enemy supported by internal and external resources waging a major warfare against our nation.” www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-to-obasanjo-im-nigerias-best-leader/ |
Supreme Court reinstates impeached Taraba deputy governor NOVEMBER 21, 2014 BY ADE ADESOMOJU, ABUJA The Supreme Court has ordered the immediate reinstatement of Deputy Governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Sanni Danladi, who was impeached by the state House of Assembly in October 2012. In a unanimous judgment, the Supreme Court held that the impeachment panel set up by the House of Assembly to investigate the allegations against Danladi violated his rights to fair hearing. The impeachment panel was said to have gone ahead with its proceedings without hearing Danladi and recommended his impeachment, while the panel snubbed his court papers which he served on it to challenge its composition. Justice Sylvester Ngwuta who delivered the lead judgment held that there seemed to be conspiracy between both the Taraba State High Court and the “kangaroo” impeachment panel to frustrate the appellant. He held that set aside the judgments of both the Court of Appeal and the Taraba State High Court, which had dismissed Danaladi’s suit. The apex court held that the two lower courts ought to have resolved the issue of fair hearing in favour of Danladi. Danladi was impeached about a month before the governor of the state, Dambaba Suntai, was involved in an air accident. Garba Umar, who was appointed to replace Danladi, was later elevated as the acting governor, following Suntai’s ill health that resulted from the crash. |

Speaking in Oko during the commissioning of the new branch of Oko Micro Finance Bank, a Director at the CBN, Enugu branch, Mr. Ogadi Mmeka, disclosed that apart from Lagos State which has the highest number of banks, Anambra State ranks second. He urged the bank not to relent in its success but strive harder to open more branches and raise a capital of N100 million to get to the status of a state Micro Finance Bank which will give it leverage to open more branches in any part of the state.
