CultureNotions About These Igbo People by tonychristopher(op): 5:50pm On Feb 07, 2015
If you rely only on Internet websites and on some Nigeria news media for information, you might get the impression that the Igbo are 8 ft tall; weigh 400 lbs; would break an iron rod on their knees; and would easily kill a tiger with their muscular hands. This is not true and never was. But to some Nigerians their reaction to an Igbo in position of power gives the impression that an Igbo can do anything that God can do.

Consider the reactions to an Igbo presidency, to Okonjo-Iweala tenure as minister; to Diezani, etc. And to Army chief of Staff Ihejirika.

The fear of Igbo domination is not a new fear and comes up even when there are no bases for it. There had not been an occasion when the Igbo dominated Nigeria or any part of Nigerian political or economic segment. NCNC was a political party that had significant Igbo membership but was not dominated by the Igbo, not in the sense of Yoruba in Action Group or Hausa/Fulani in NPC. There was powerful Yoruba presence in NCNC and with the alliance with NEPU significant Northern presence. One could not say the same for AG/UMBC alliance. Before the Civil War the Federal Government and Civil Service had significant Igbo presence but not a dominant position; not any more than the Yoruba or Hausa/Fulani.

Even after one had classified all Easterners as Igbo.

Even in Eastern Nigeria the dominant role was not true. There was a non Igbo government leader in Eastern Nigeria . There was never a non Yoruba leader in the West even though Midwestern Nigerians had minorities. There was never a non Hausa/Fulani Government Leader in the North even though there are many minority ethnic groups in the region.

Why are the Igbo so feared?

On the other hand there were many occasions when the Igbo had been marginalized. In the first 30 years after the Civil War there were no Igbo of any worthwhile rank in the Nigerian Armed Forces or police. Few headed any powerful ministries, or parastatals, or headed the civil services. The economy is now dominated by the Yoruba/Hausa/Fulani oligarchy and now one is complaining. After the indigenization decree nearly 60% of Nigerian economy was in the hands of Yoruba and there was no word from the Igbo or other Nigerians about domination. A review of the Federal Government foreign indebtedness from 1960-2007 shows that the East, especially the SE, was very poorly served.

But all Nigerians paid for and are paying the loans.

The only part of Nigerian life one would find Igbo domination is in the number of Nigerians who live outside their states of origin. There are more Igbo in this case than any other ethnic group. But these people moved on their own, are often engaged in petty trading or practicing some kind of trade funded by their sweat. There is no government handout involved and they do not work for any government.

Why should anybody be envious?

This essay was prompted by the insidious attacks on Chief of Staff Ihejirika. This writer had written in the past that non political appointments ought to be based solely on merits while political appointments would try to take into consideration the national character concept. I still hold this belief. But analyzing the recent army promotions and deployments, one sees that the national character concepts was very much in evidence. Could it be that in this instance the marginalization of the Igbo was not as obvious as in the past and therefore people are afraid that the Igbo might come back?

There is nothing to fear. The Igbo had never dominated anything, are not planning to dominate anybody and would be unable to do so even if they tried.

The Igbo is just like the rest of Nigerians.

There are no 8 ft tall Igbo.

Those who say that are still living in the past. We have gone past that stage in life. As it is today, I see myself first as a Nigerian. Second, a Rivers and south-south man. South East is a word used during, before Naija civil war and during independence too. As it is today, am a south-south man. Am a Rivers man. Am a Nigerian. South- East are the Igbos.
What about the Igbo in rivers cross river and delta so because they are now in Niger delta they are not Igbo again

That's e author=shizzle11 post=30512100]APC already rigging systematically in specific areas in lagos. Jega has serious case to answer. He must respond to the questions raised by Clark, Ekwueme, Ladigbolu and co. Its plain obvious he has connived with the opposition to rig the polls.

I went for my PVC last year with my 2011 TVC and i was told my ward was one of those that the system crashed (or whatever nonsense excuse they gave). After re-registering last November I went for my PVC this morning, and was told that its not available, i was livid.

Now i was told this same morning that registered voters of a particular ethnic group were deliberately being disenfranchised. When you present your TVC to the adhoc staff and your name is igbo, they tell you its not there. It happened to a lot of us, and many left angrily without their PVC's. Obviously the PVC's have been taken away and hidden somewhere, i queried and sought to know why its not there and all they kept telling is 'there may be a mix up', whats my own with mix-up or mix down?. This is currently happening somewhere in amuwo-odofin on lagos state as i speak.

The plan by jega and the apc to rig the elections must be resisted by all means. I cant imagine that i cant vote in the coming elections. Jega told us that the PVC's are ready, why cant i find mine?, why cant persons from a particular region find theirs? Jega must tell us what happened to our PVCs. He must tell us why areas suspected to be dominated by PDP supporters or igbos cant find their PVCs.

This is unacceptable! I must vote in this election. Jega must not play into the hands of the the so called NEF led by ango abdullahi and their born-to-rule-mentality nonsense. I am so angry right now that if i lay my hands on any apc nuisance on nairaland, i will kill him or her with my bare hands.

Nonsense! angryangryangry[/quote]Thats

Thank you Sir. God Bless You.

But I wouldn't say at the detriment of Easterners rather the Yorubas.

Jonathan made Yorubas his number one enemies when he became President in 2011.

Obasanjo fought a lot of cabals from North to liberate South and ensure Jonah emerged, yet Jonah made these people his close allies.

I have said it here several times. Jonah tried all he could to please the Hausa-Fulanis, he gave them a lot of juicy appointments yet they are still working against him.

They can't be pleased, all they want is the Federal Fawar. All they want is to send Jonah back to Otueke.

My only worry now is that we have a lot of political leaders who are also working against Jonathan.

We have Oshiomole in Edo, Amaechi in Rivers, Okorocha in Imo and other SW Governors.

It could have been South vs North, if Jonah could win the entire South like he did in 2011(he only lost Osun State) and got some votes in MB, he would win the election.

But, too badt for us, now we have divided house in South. Too badt Jonah may lose this election. He shouldn't have fought with somebody like Obasanjo, this is the time he needs OBJ most to ensure he emerges again through do or die election. But he's offended the old man. He replaced all the PDP delegates from SW whom were all OBJ's candidates. Some of them left for APC. Why did he do that, why? Wetin konsain Jonah with whoever represents SW? Wetin konsain him nah? You don't divide your home when you have strong North to contend with.

Jonathan made a lot of mistakes, my instincts tells me Ahmed Gulak or whatever he calls himself was deliberately giving Jonah wrong advices just to ruin him.

Why make a northerner your NSA, Special Adviser on Political Affairs, INEC(he didn't see how OBJ installed Prof Iwu, an Easterner, who gave us do-or-die election which brought Jonah to power with Yaradua).

He shouldn't have appointed Jega in the first place. He wanted to be seen as a good guy who allows oppositions to thrive, now the opposition is about to consume him.

Jonathan has made a lot of mistakes, I pray he survives this tsunami. He would use his sense and do the needful if he emerged for the second term.

He surrounded himself with Hausa-Fulanis(he never learnt from late General Aguiyi-Ironsi), he gave them powerful positions, he tried to please them. Now they are about to send him back to Otueke.

There are lots of northern governors in PDP who are working towards Buhari's emergence as the president. Imagine that! They are working against their own political party. As far as they are concerned, it's about power returning to the north, nothing else matters.

I'm glad Military have come in. The election must be postponed and Jega should be threathened to resigned. Then a Yoruba or Igbo Prof should be appointed as the INEC chairman. A crazy Professor like Prof. Maurice Iwu(God Bless Gen Obasanjo wherever he is today) should be appointed from SW or SE. Prof Wale Omole can execute the job perfectly.

I've never trusted this Jega. I may not be bothered about North Central or North West, but how come 80percent voters have collected their PVCs in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa? How come? Who are the people collecting the cards? Na ghosts dey collect am?

Jonathan must do all he could to ensure he retains the power. It's high time we called their bluff. Let them do their worst. National Population Census and Renewal Of Major Oil Wells are taking place next year. Jonathan must be the President then.

Say no to Internal Colonialism.

Say no to Born To Rule.

Say no to Census Rigging.

President Goodluck Ebelemi Jonathan Must Win This Election And Rule Till 2019.

We shall hand over power to the northerners after we must have conducted free and fair population census(for the first time in the history of Nigeria) and give oil wells to the rightful owners in 2016.

Jonathan Till 2019. If They Don't Want Jonathan, Then We Go Our Separate Ways.

God Bless Nigeria.

Lobatan O Jarey.
