Education / Re: Ondo State Government Signed Bill To Establish University Of Medical Science by topazjosh(m): 12:13am On Dec 10, 2014
Ondo to establish medical varsity
NOVEMBER 25, 2014 BY ESTHER OLAJIDE
Mimiko
The Ondo State government has announced its plan
to establish a specialised medical science university
to actualise its achievements in the health sector and
stop the emigration of experienced scientists from
the state.
The state Commissioner for Information, Kayode
Akinmade, said the varsity would be named the Ondo
State University of Medical Sciences.
Akinmade spoke during a working tour of the Ondo
Medical Village in Ondo town.
He said the university would build on the platforms
already created by the government to ensure the
development of qualitative health care system in the
state.
He said the institution, when established, would halt
the brain drain being experienced in the health
sector through the production of top quality health
professionals to effectively run the various hospitals
in the state.
Ondo State is said to be the only state in the South-
West without a teaching hospital.
Akinmade said the establishment of a medical
science university would halt constant exit of health
workers seeking to explore further career
opportunities within and outside the country and
that the proposed medical school would replicate the
Mother and Child hospitals across the state.
The institution is also expected to make provision for
an institutional-based acquisition of academic,
professional and technological knowledge needed for
manpower development in technology and basic
applied sciences.
The commissioner explained that at the beginning of
the Governor Olusegun Mimiko administration, basic
health indices of the state were considered the worst
in the entire South-West due to the relatively high
rate of maternal mortality and morbidity.
Akinmade said the administration immediately
responded by initiating ambitious health care
development programmes aimed at reducing the
burden of diseases and mortality among the people
of the state
He listed as part of the state’s health schemes the
Abiye Safe Motherhood initiative, which seeks to
provide free access to quality health care services for
pregnant women and children less than five years of
age as well as the famous Mother and Child hospitals
in the state.
He also said that the government had established
trauma and surgical centres to handle critical trauma
and burns cases.

“I was at the hospital built by the governor today and
one thing that I observed is that the common smell
that is characteristic of hospitals is not there. When I
was walking round the hospital, there was no odour. I
find it difficult to call it a medical village; I thought
we’d been going round some hotel accommodation or
five-star hotel accommodation. Other people should
come here and see how much the governor and his
team have put together to change the healthcare
system in this state and by extension in the country.
Whoever succeeds you must build on the solid
foundation you have laid,” Senator Mark declared.

Politics / Re: Ondo Trauma Centre Begins Operation by topazjosh(m): 7:27am On Nov 30, 2013
Lemme sign out with this quotes from Femi Fani-
Kayode...."the Medical Village in Ondo Town (which
houses the most advanced, best equipped and most
sophisticated set of hospitals in Nigeria= catering for
virtually every known aspect of medical care from
serious accidents, to childbirth and to major surgery
and whose services are completely FREE OF
CHARGE)",......The truth is that I was ashamed of the
fact that so much is going on in Ondo state in terms of
development and services to the ordinary people and
yet we as Nigerians, and particularly as yoruba people,
have refused to acknowledge or admit it either for self-
serving political motives or for other reasons which are
best known to ourselves. Instead of playing politics and
indulging in the usual grandstanding that so many
others have been doing in their states, Mimiko is one
governor that is clearly rolling up his sleeves up,
working extremely hard for his people and looking
within. It appears to me that he believes that the work
itself and the purposeful establishment of an
intimidating legacy of good governance and massive
infrastructural development throughout the state will
do the talking for him. And he is right." End of quotes!

It is going to bé made an independent University where
Graduates of Medicine will go for further knowledge.
Very soon, it is going to house the only reliable and
functional DNA Centre in Nigeria.

Gov. Mimiko's Medical Village!
You won't even be wrong if you call it a gracious
venture into medical tourism! I was there yesterday .
Located at Laje Road, off Adeyemi College road in Ondo
city, the Medical Village, which comprises of a 100-bed
Mother and Child Hospital, Gani Fawehinmi Diagnostic
Centre, Trauma Centre; General Hospital, Call Centre,
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Hospital, Heliport,
staff quarters, staff school, shopping mall, The kidney
care centre, the first public Solar powered house in
Nigeria and sports centre, is a giant step by a
phenomenal Governor in medical advancement and
goodness to mankind.
The M&C hospital averages between 24 and 25
deliveries daily, and the mortality rate is near zero.
From pregnancy to delivery, health care is free and, in
fact, health rangers are assigned to each pregnant
woman in the state, who is provided a phone to
communicate with the health ranger, who visits her at
home for check-ups throughout the duration of the
pregnancy.
The diagnostic centre with state-of-the-art medical
equipment such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI), CT Scan, mammogram, auto analyzer, among
others, and named after the late human rights activist
and lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, has been functional since
February 2011.
Are you still wondering why Mimiko remain Nigeria's
best performing Governor in the Health sector?
Just three weeks ago,The Bill Gates Foundation scored
the State government highest on polio eradication and
routine immunisation, saying it had been consistently
committed to polio eradication as it was also among
the first set of states in Nigeria to introduce
pentavalent vaccine for immunisation. Last year,
speaking on why the state had retained its lead in the
quarterly performance assessment score sheet on
immunisation against polio, Governor Mimiko noted
that the routine immunisation coverage in Ondo State
had reached 85 per cent going by the third quarter of
2012 assessment released by the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation in October when the state ranked first in
the federation.by remigius akinbinu

Politics / Ondo Trauma Centre Begins Operation by topazjosh(m): 7:07am On Nov 30, 2013
Skeletal services
have commenced at
the Ondo state
Trauma and
Surgery center, in
Ondo town, which
now attests to the
Ondo state
government’s commitment to again setting
the pace on how to reduce mortality by road
traffic crashes.
Some Christian clerics led prayers for the
dedication of the facility and members of staff
for unparalleled services and successes.
Addressing the members of staff, the State
Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Adeyanju
said the successes recorded at the mother and
child hospital encouraged government to also
commit the Trauma and Surgery Centre into
God’s hand.
Adeyanju emphasised the need for the
workers to show high level of commitment
considering the critical nature of their job as
well as justify government’s huge investment
in the centre.
The Commissioner was accompanied to the
center by members of the newly constituted
Hospital Management Board led by its
chairman, Dr Niran Okunriboye, who was
overwhelmed with what he saw at the centre.
The team later took a tour of the facilities on
ground and were particularly fascinated with
one of the world class equipment capable of
treating 80 percent degree burns.

Paul John: Good to see Ondo state moving away from the league of one city(capital) state.

Went to Akure few months ago, it looks well organized and beautiful.

Kudos to Mimko for the transformation being witnessed in Ondo, but he needs to work more on the state IGR. He needs to start looking beyond the oil money being generated in the state and start to diversify the state's income.

Ondo is one of the most resourceful states in the country, with Bitumen, good soil for agriculture, oil and industries. I see no reason why Ondo can't build her own seaport, and tap from one of the things that make Lagos the #1 state in the country. Ondo should be competing with the likes of Ogun and Oyo and not young states like Osun and Ekiti in term of IGR.

Nice on @ op

yea bro,but FG need to approve that which might involve lots of steps, meanwhile odsg need to seriously work on is IGR,I so wish there is seaport already and train service from coastal/southern part of the state to central part
