Skydivine: Back in the days, before anyone even knew about Dangote, my secondary school science club went on excursion to a cement company. There, we were shown step by step how cement is produce. Only two major raw materials are needed, lime stone and gypsum. Both are in abundance locally. However, the production is very energy consuming. From burning the stone in blast furnace to crushing them with huge crusher. In addition, because these raw materials are heavy, powerful rollers on conveyor belts connect the whole system to automate the process. The most fascinating part was the blast furnace. We were told that the heat required can only be generated by adding Coke ( a derivative of coal) to the furnace. All these point to the fact that energy cost is pivotal to the cost of cement. The public power grid is inadequate for such endeavor. Thus, most cement factories are powered by natural gas directly connected on gas pipe lines. Something we also have plenty of. Almost every thing is local content, yet the price of cement is so exorbitant. The question is, why? Some have pointed to cost of logistics after production as the reason for high cost of cement. Arguably, the factory price does not support this position. A simple calculation based on transportation cost can clarify this point. A trailer load of cement to a depot in town. Say from Ogun state to Lagos cannot be more than #400k. When divided by 600 bags ( maximum loading capacity) , its only around #670 per bag. My brother all point are totally right. We have everything in abundance in this country. Dangote cement suppose to be cheaper than other cement product becos dangote has refinery that produces the gas needed for the manufacturing of cement. How can BUA and Lafarge cement selling same /cheaper price with dangote cement, remember BUA and Lafarge are buying gas for their production. Government need to come in or price regulatory body. |

bixton: All governments over the world control prices as well as create an enabling environment. If the Nigerian government decides to control prices then it's a good development. Is it not better than telling us that they are giving the masses subsidies which always seems fictitious with mind blowing amounts. If government can control the price, it will be better for us and also government should make everything available for the manufacturers too. They always complaining of running cost not raw materials because most of their raw materials are locally sourced. |

Kaybthaniels: I checked it, no leakage from the backnut, the leakage seems to coming from the bottom of the tank. It might be factory error. There are two type of pipes. The rubber type and the plastic. Maybe you bought the plastic type. You can get waterproof sealant in any plumbing shop or building materials shop closer to you for temporary solution |

floshady02: @topsy23 what do you think about this piping quote for a 4 bedroom bungalow Seen ma, just few observations. Your plumber quoted Copper pipe for hot line. Better to use PPR pipes for both hot and cold line. I will go through the sent drawings and generate the quantities. |

gbadexy: Tendency of cement screeding after some years. I understand some still like it but it's my duty to enlighten clients on the possibility especially if necessary additional binder wasn't sufficiently added and what step to take just to be on a safer side. Anyone meticulous about appearance would have to rescreed and repaint. I was just discussing with a nairalander and he said the satin used in his previous build shows the wall when stain is cleaned with cloth and water. I told him I was going to post that on nairaland to enlighten those that may not be aware and think that is normal that satin should wash off with cleaning. Regal paint matte emulsion doesn't even wash off with cleaning. Be sure of what you are getting especially if coat is unreasonably low compared to any good similar products. Weldone sir, I have forwarded our conversation to my client about the external paint to be used in a waterlogged and salty area.. Thanks for detailed information |

Kaybthaniels: Pls my geepee tank is leaking, I called a plumber to fix it few weeks, I am not sure what he used in sealing it but it was fine until a few days ago, the leakage now is even more than before, There is a possibility it might be leaking from more than one spot, Is there anyone here that can come help me with this?, I am in Lagos, around Baruwa, ipaja rd, thanks for all your help and answers in advance 🙏 Pls let me ask you these two questions - is it leaking directly from the tank ? - Have you checked the tank backnut whether it it well screwed and firm? Can you do these two exercise on the tank and revert back with your observations? |

Celepope: It’s a storey building. And the criminal former Engineer used 6 inches all through upstairs. Someone said he is supposed to use 9 inches in some areas. The decking isn’t cantilever. I just don’t want the pipes showing from outside all through out the house (3 areas - Masters bathroom and two rooms upstairs which aligns with the two rooms downstairs) I’m being advised that cracking the wall may weaken the wall and lead to a collapse. I detest seeing duplex with pipes outside the wall and that’s what I’m trying to avoid. It is possible sir... Just tell your plumber that you want everything to be conduit system sir. |

Celepope: I have practically used this topic to almost complete my house and also discover that I am being ripped off by my former site Engineer. Thanks to those who have contributed to this topic. I have a question. 6 inches blocks was used for the upper floor of my house . Now I am in a dilemma regarding pipping of the toilets. Is it advisable to do a full conduit piping on the pipe that will send down the toilet waste to the chamber or I should just do an open pipping that is visible all the way to the chamber? Because I am being told that it will require seriously cracking the walls because piping was not made provision for during the decking phase. I don't mind the walls being cracked to conceal the pipes but is it advisable and doable? I have two questions to ask you sir. - Is it storey building? -Did you use 6inches block on first floor external walls and internal walls? If the two questions above are yes, then you to follow these process. Your soil pipe must be 4inches pipe and your plumber must look for way around it to make it possible. The upper floor vent can be reduce to 3 -inches pipe to avoid toilet wall being collapse during the first fix. The conduit on the decking might be somehow difficult because of the reinforcement on the decking BUT if the house doesn't catiilever it is still achievable., you might need to install some Buckhead during pop installation to cover some exposed pipes. The pop will do it like a design. Coring would have been the best but the machine is too expensive and renting per day is about 120k. |

horlabiyi: I wonder ooo but I will ask him to come and check everything again. POP pics attached With the design of your POP you need strip light (rope light). Recess spot light and strip light will give a good finishing on this pop. Wall light is becoming an old school installation these days.. You can put me in a conference call with the electrician to guide him on what to do. |
Properties › Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by topsy23(m): 9:43am On Feb 08, 2025 |
horlabiyi: Wow I love this detailed explanation. The building is a full POP building. Concerning the wires, is there any brand you can recommend? The electricity supply will be 3-phase, 9ACs? That’s not possible and the water heater will only be 4 or 5.
I’ll work on everything you said, thank you so much. I really appreciate There are other cables -Nigerchin -Coleman -Witchtech -Lagostar. Nigerchin is the best in terms of quality, packaging and insulation(protection) Lagostar is following Nigerchin because they are quality, packaging and insulation too. Coleman and Witchtech are in the same category(Level). If you have pop, why is the electrician quoting for ceiling rose.? |

horlabiyi: I think he quoted for J&B not sure tho. How about the price for the fittings and the wires? Thank You J&B cable is also a Nigeria cable but don't know much about the quality cos I am not their distributor. Few things I need to point out from the list. - There is no ceiling light at all from the list. It means you did not have POP at all in the house. He is using wall bracket in all the are Inclucluding kitchen.. Pls confirm from him. - He listed 5pcs of earth rod and there is no earth coupler. Also the price of original copper earth rod is more than what he price. What he quote should be copper coated earth rod and not original as he stated in his quotation. -The main PHCN supply to your house, is it going to be 3-phase or single phase? The cut out is 3pcs and normally the cut out suppose to be four(4)(Red phase, Blue phase, Yellow phase and neutral) for 3-phase connection and 2pcs(live & neutral) for single phase connection. Why using ceiling rose since it's a conduit system of wiring. I could see from the list that you have nine(9) AC and six(6) water heater. -I don't know the type of fittings he priced but you can request for pictures from him. |

horlabiyi: Hello everyone, kindly help me check and review this wiring and fittings quotation.
Building size :- 64ft by 34ft
Two living rooms
Four bedrooms.
I hope the attached images are clear enough. Thank You All It will be a kind of difficult to ascertain the quantity quoted. The electrician knows the piping done. Assuming you have the electrical drawing is available it could have been better. What is the make of the wire he quoted for. Also, he should use 1.5mm earth cable g for 2.5mm cable You can show him the analysis below 1.5mm Red 5 Black 4 2.5mm Red 3 Black 3 1.5mm green(earth) 3 4mm Red 2 Black 2 2.5mm green(earth) 2 Based on the list you uploaded I generated these quantities out. For thee switches and socket, I believe he quoted for one of the brand in the market. |

Evangelisttj: There’s some truth to this, but it’s not entirely accurate.
Many workers abroad (especially in developed countries like the UK, US, Canada, etc.) are paid an hourly wage, but whether they have guaranteed hours depends on the contract type.
Full-time: Typically 36–40 hours per week. Part-time: Usually around 24 hours per week but can be less.
Some contracts guarantee a minimum number of hours per week, while others, like zero-hour contracts (common in the UK), don’t guarantee any hours. To me personally, the hourly rate might not work in Nigeria because a lot of client will find it difficult to pay. Presently the skilled labour are demanding for 15k per day and if you to go by hourly rate you need to consider the cost of transportation and the location of the project. Transportation and fuel is taking alot of money these days. From oshodi to Ajah alone is 1500naira. From respective house to Oshodi and from Ajah bus stop to site location is not part of the money. Some technicians are spending close to 7k on Transportation per day. 100naira is becoming so useless in transportation area because hardly you will see bus conductor collecting 100naira for 1km journey . If you want to go with your car to site, be ready to spend more because 20-25k will go on fuel alone. |

ELEVATIONVIEWDE: Of course But one must come before the other, you can't tell me that you will go inside a roof that is 5ft high at the front and just 1 foot at the back to do any wiring after the pop has been done. It is not visible. So get it right. I understand what the man is trying to say. He's trying to say pop guys and electrician can be on site the time. It will take like two days before the pop installer can hang their pop board since they have to mould first before installation. Electrician can use that two days to complete the areas where the pop guys will commence installation |
