The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has issued a stark warning to the Nigerian government, cautioning that the country is on the precipice of collapse due to escalating economic hardship, poverty, and insecurity. In a strongly worded statement, the CNG expressed deep concern over the government's handling of the economy, citing dire statistics from the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) that show 133 million Nigerians living in multidimensional poverty and 20 million people unemployed or underemployed.

"The suffering of Nigerians is palpable across every stratum," said Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, spokesperson for the CNG. "The government's economic policies have created this dire situation, and it's imperative that they take responsibility and address the issues urgently."

The CNG criticized the government's decision to increase interest rates, which they believe will further devastate the economy and diminish job prospects. They also expressed dismay at the removal of fuel subsidies, which has led to a shocking 195% increase in petrol prices, crippling the mobility of people and goods across the country.

The group urged President Tinubu to reassess his economic advisers and purge those who have perpetuated harmful policies. They also rejected the plan to increase fuel prices to fund the new national minimum wage, instead advocating for humane and innovative alternatives to address the economic crisis.

The CNG's warning comes as Nigeria faces a looming revolt, with dark clouds gathering on the horizon. The group emphasized that cosmetic measures will not suffice to contain the raging anger of the people, particularly when they are inundated by economic hardships, massive hunger, and rampant poverty.

"We pray that Almighty Allah endows the President with the needed political will and divine wisdom to listen to the cries of the people and steer the nation to safety," Comrade Charanchi concluded.

The National Commission Against the Proliferation of Arms, Light Weapons, and Ammunitions (NATCOM) has congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his reelection as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In a letter signed by Acting Director General Dr. Agaba Iduh Fidel, NATCOM praised Tinubu's "leadership and dedication to promoting democracy, peace, security, and development in the West African sub-region." The commission hailed Tinubu's vision for a more democratic and prosperous ECOWAS, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the organization to greater heights.

Tinubu's reelection, according to NATCOM, is a testament to the trust and confidence of ECOWAS member states in his leadership. The commission looks forward to collaborating with Tinubu and ECOWAS to combat the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in West Africa, creating a safer environment for citizens.

"We strongly believe that your leadership will continue to bring about positive change and progress in the entire West Africa," Dr. Fidel wrote. "Once again, congratulations on your reelection, and we wish you continued success in your endeavors as the chairman of ECOWAS."

The letter highlights NATCOM's commitment to working with ECOWAS and relevant security agencies to achieve a more secure West Africa.

On the heels of this year's World Refugee Day, the Asylum and Refugee Rights Advocates (ARRA) has declared that it stands in solidarity with the more than 32 million refugees worldwide, calling for unity in championing their cause.

The nongovernmental organisation (NGO) noted that “each of these individuals carries a unique story of resilience, courage, and survival”, and “as advocates, we recognize that our collective efforts can make a significant impact in their lives.”

This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja at the weekend by its Executive Director, Dr Okey Ezugwu Esq.

In its urgent call for Solidarity with Refugees in line with the theme of the 2024 World Refugee Day, ARRA drew the attention of the International Community to the plight of Asylum seekers and refugees across the globe.

According Dr Ezugwu, Lawyer and retired Assistant Comptroller General of Immigration Service in Nigeria, Refugees face unimaginable challenges across different regions of the world.

In its samplers, ARRA observed that the “ongoing conflict in Syria has led to the displacement of 6.7 million people, making it one of the largest refugee crises globally. Families torn apart, homes destroyed, and dreams shattered—these are the harsh realities faced by Syrian refugees.”

In Afghanistan, the NGO noted that “With 2.7 million Afghan refugees, this country grapples with instability, violence, and insecurity. Their journey to safety often involves perilous escapes and uncertain futures.”

While calling the plights of refugees in South Sudan, ARRA said that amid “escaping civil war and famine, 2.3 million South Sudanese refugees seek refuge in neighboring countries. Their struggle for survival continues as they navigate overcrowded camps and limited resources.”

In the Central African Republic, the Nigeria based international NGO stated that “conflict and violence have forced many Central Africans to flee their homes. The crisis persists, affecting millions of lives.”

While in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), ARRA said that “the DRC remains a hotspot for displacement due to armed conflicts and political instability. Over 130 million people globally are currently displaced, with 32 million being refugees.”


Also in the ARRA's samplers on the global refugee crisis is Cameroun.

“An armed insurrection by the Amazonia separatist group has created Refugee crisis of monumental proportion.

“At the last count more than 60, 000 refugees are massed up in many towns and villages along the Cameroun - Nigeria border in Cross River State. Regrettably only few of them are rein in in Camps. The rest have found shellter in primary schools and any available spaces.”

In view of the the plights of refugees worldwide, the NGO called for qualitative action by Countries Hosting these Refugees.

“Accordingly we urge for Solidarity more than empathy which requires concrete action. In that order, we urge governments and the United Nations (UN) to as a matter of urgency;

“1. Invest in Solutions: Allocate resources to address the root causes of displacement. Ending conflicts and promoting stability are crucial steps.

“2. Welcoming Policies: Countries like Turkey (hosting 3.7 million refugees), Pakistan, Uganda, Sudan, and Germany have opened their doors to refugees. Let us celebrate their strengths and achievements while advocating for more inclusive policies.

“3. Community Support: Refugees thrive when welcomed by local communities. Let us ensure they have opportunities to rebuild their lives and contribute positively.

“4. Global Unity: Together, we can create a world where refugees are not just tolerated but embraced. Let us stand #WithRefugees and make a difference”, ARRA solicited.

The Asylum and Refugee Rights Advocates (ARRA) has raised an urgent alarm over the distressing conditions faced by Nigerian migrants, transit passengers, and other nationals in Ethiopian prisons.

The call for immediate action was prompted by recent reports and intelligence which highlighted a worrying increase in the number of deaths and deteriorating health conditions among inmates in the country.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Dr Okey Ezugwu Esq., the nongovernmental organisation (NGO) said, “We urge the Nigerian government, the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), and other concerned stakeholders to swiftly intervene and conduct thorough investigations into the alarming and discomforting reports emanating from Ethiopian detention facilities. It is imperative that we ensure legal protections and assurances for the well-being of those incarcerated.”

Recalling disturbing accounts from detainees, the body said, “Information received from various sources within Ethiopian prisons, as well as from Nigerians residing in Ethiopia, paints a grim picture of the injustices faced by some inmates in the country.

“Many are believed to be imprisoned for minor infractions, such as misunderstandings with airport officials or innocuous inquiries that were misinterpreted as offensive. Others have been detained following simple disputes with local citizens, and there are cases where individuals with valid immigration documents and legal status have been inexplicably incarcerated”, the statement noted.

ARRA said it “stands firmly against criminality and the violation of any nation's laws. However, we advocate for the adherence to due legal processes and the protection of human rights for all individuals, regardless of their nationality. The majority of those suffering in these conditions are Africans on African soil, which is a regrettable and unacceptable situation.”

In further plea for governmental action, the NGO said, “We call upon the Federal Government of Nigeria and other African governments to protect the rights of their citizens and ensure that they are not subjected to unjust treatment abroad. We propose that the Nigerian government undertake a comprehensive inventory and census of Nigerians in foreign prisons, providing necessary legal and other forms of assistance where applicable.

“While we acknowledge the commendable efforts of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiCOM), ably led by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in addressing the challenges faced by Nigerians abroad, we emphasize that there is still much to be done. The protection of our citizens' rights and freedoms must be a priority, and we must act with urgency to alleviate their suffering everywhere and anywhere they are”, the statement stressed.

As of the latest available information, Nigerian nationals alone are over 300 inmates serving various prison terms in Ethiopian prisons besides those abandoned as awaiting trial detainees.

As Labour Party National Transition Committee Expresses Solidarity With Organised Labour



The National Transition Committee (NTC) of the Labour Party has stated that it stands in solidarity with Nigerian workers in their quest for a decent national minimum wage.

In a statement jointly signed by NTC Chairman and labour veteran, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, and the Secretary of the committee, Engr. Nnawuihe Nwauwa, the NTC officials also noted that by their action in “denouncing" the spirited efforts of organised labour through a nationwide strike which was a response to the nonchalant attitude of the current government to workers' welfare, Julius Abure platoon of ragtag sycophants had revealed who their real paymasters are. 

The National Transition Committee of Labour Party stated that the party also “unequivocally supports" the nationwide strike action by organised labour, which was well received by Nigerian workers with high level of voluntary compliance.

The statement noted that as the entire country rallied behind the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress on the current struggle by Organised Labour for a decent national minimum wage for Nigerian workers, “the political wannabes recruited by one Mr. Julius Abure” released a puerile statement condemning the efforts of Labour for Nigerian workers.

The statement further stated that the latest infantile effort by Abure and his suspended dissidents to ingratiate themselves to the insensitive Federal Government led by President Tinubu and treacherously disparage organised labour in Nigeria has once again revealed to whom Abure and his ostracized political mob truly owe their loyalty and clarified the crass mismanagement of the Labour Party's fortunes these past few years under the visionless and "shameless political merchants" headed by Abure, who have now in the process "inadvertently committed class suicide. Now, their ruin is complete!

“Unfortunately, while Nigerians are applauding the NLC and TUC over a successful strike action and the principled position that workers deserve just wages, a few scoundrels masquerading as former Labour Party leaders chose this epoch of dire struggle for the survival of Nigerian workers to cast aspersion on the leadership of Organised Labour and the strike action.

“We are not surprised. The small company of journey men escorting Mr. Julius Abure to perfidy are political merchants. They have never believed in the working class ideals of Labour Party. For them, Labour Party is another "come and chop" party where nominations are sold to the highest bidder and the proceeds are squandered on ventures short on virtues. All that has changed!

“As part of the mandate given to the National Transition Committee (NT) by Labour Party Stakeholders to organise an all-inclusive and expansive National Convention of the Labour Party in tandem with the Consent judgment delivered by Justice Gabriel Kolawole and affirmed by an INEC brokered Terms of Settlement between the Nigeria Labour Congress and immediate past leadership of Labour Party, we urge all members of the Labour Party to reconcile themselves to the party's working class ideology and ethos and to always act in its defence.

“The adornment of the badge of class consciousness, progressivism and egalitarianism is the crux of the Labour Party identity. This identity resonates with the rallying campaign message by the leader of the Labour Party and the Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, that Nigeria must move from consumption to production. A productive economy must prioritise workers by paying the working class a living national minimum wage as a buffer against poverty and indignity.

“By denouncing the spirited efforts of Organised Labour through a nationwide strike which was a response to the nonchalant attitude of the current government to workers' welfare, the Abure ragtag platoon of sycophants reveal who their real paymasters are.

“The National Transition Committee views this anti-party posture of Mr. Julius Abure and his minions as a further supply of adrenalin to quickly perfect plans for an authentic Labour Party National Convention which would be driven from grassroots to the national level, and which would produce leadership at all levels that represent the ideology, credentials and ethos of a Labour Party.

“Once again, we convey our solidarity with Organised Labour in Nigeria in the resilient struggle for social and wage justice. We shall overcome! Morning comes!” the statement concluded.

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has expressed sadness over the sudden death of the Commissioner For Local Government And Chieftaincy Affairs, Bauchi State, Ahmed Aliyu Jalam, who died in a fatal auto crash around Misau-Darazo Highway on Saturday June 1st 2024, on his way to his village Jalam Dambam LGA.

In his condolence message to the state Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir, the family, and the people of Bauchi state on behalf of National Executive Council (NEC), The Board of Trustees (BOT), Management and Staff of the National Office, ALGON National President, Hon Aminu Mu'azu Maifata described the deceased as a true grassroots unifier.

The message reads, “on behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC), The Board of Trustees (BOT), Management and Staff of the National Office, I heartily condole the State Governor, Sen. Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir, the family, and the people of Bauchi state over the sudden death of Ahmed Alyiu Jalam the Bauchi state commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs who died following a fatal auto crash around Misau-Darazo Highway on Saturday June 1st 2024, on his way to his village Jalam Dambam LGA.



“ALGON is deeply saddened by this unforeseen incident, especially for the huge gaps and setbacks his demise will cause the family, and the rural populace of the State due to his positive stand on issues of Local Governments and Area Councils which are presently gaining traction nationally, hence his contributions will be missed greatly.

“As a true grassroots unifier, his earthly commitment to advancing good governance and community relations will be missed.

Globally, it is a well-known fact that the proliferation of small arms and light weapons poses a significant threat to national security, stability, and economic development in any country. As Nigeria grapples with rising insecurity, it is crucial to address this menace comprehensively without recourse to personal interest or individuals’ pecuniary gains. Nigeria is bigger than  any individual, no matter office we occupy. Therefore, as a Nigerian, in whatsoever capacity we find ourselves, let us remember that it is the country first. 


Today, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's tenure as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) provides a unique opportunity to establish National Commission for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NATCOM) in Nigeria as a specialized commission dedicated to controlling the spread of illicit arms. This has become imperative for so many reason, especially because of its potential impact on Nigeria and Nigerian economy so as to be among other member countries that have keyed into the ECOWAS convention. 


The ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Their Ammunition, and Other Related Materials is a significant regional initiative aimed at addressing the proliferation and illicit trade of small arms and light weapons within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region. 


Some key points from the convention adopted by the Conference of ECOWAS Heads of State on June 14, 2006 has its primary objectives including to prevent and combat the excessive accumulation of small arms and light weapons (SALWs) within ECOWAS and to control their circulation. The convention also seeks to address the destabilizing impact of SALWs on peace, security, and stability in the region.


In its key provisions, the convention expanded the existing moratorium on SALWs to include "components and ammunition", established a stringent waiver procedure for member states wishing to import, export, or manufacture firearms and to this end, each member state is required to create a National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons to implement the convention's resolutions. The national commissions are to play a crucial role in sharing information and experiences related to SALWs. 


From the international context, the convention aligns with international efforts to curb the proliferation of SALWs as it considers relevant United Nations instruments, including the UN Protocol on the manufacture and illicit trade in firearms, spare parts, components, and ammunition. Additionally, the convention takes into account other regional and sub-regional initiatives aimed at addressing this issue. 


In short, the ECOWAS Convention emphasizes cooperation among member states to control and prevent the spread of small arms and light weapons, contributing to regional peace and security. 


In Nigeria, the urgency of addressing small arms and light weapons proliferation cannot be over emphasised, especially when we take patriotic look into the current security challenges in the country. 


Small arms and light weapons — such as handguns, rifles, and grenades — have fueled violence, terrorism, and criminal activities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones without exception. We all feel it daily in the ongoing banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and secessionist agitations threatening lives, disrupting legitimate activities in our local communities, and hindering economic progress amid hunger and poverty in most parts of the country. 


Therefore, NATCOM's establishment would allow a better coordinated efforts to curb the influx of illegal arms within and outside Nigeria’s ungoverned spaces, given by its already established structure and volunteer workforce. 


Secondly, looking at NATCOM's Mandate and ECOWAS Convention, NATCOM's primary mandate would be to coordinate and control the proliferation of small arms and light weapons. This aligns with the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Their Ammunition, and Other Related Materials. By ratifying this convention, Nigeria commits to regional cooperation in combating arms trafficking and promoting peace and security. 


Looking at the economic gains, job creation is on top of it all as NATCOM's activities would create employment opportunities for the Nigerian youths, especially at this time when criminality is on the increase due to high rate of job losses and hash economic realities. 


From arms control officers to administrative staff, the commission's workforce would contribute to reducing unemployment rates in the country while training programmes for arms control and border security would enhance skills and employability in the country. 


Also key is enhanced security and investment climate in Nigeria as a safer environment attracts foreign direct investment (FDI) and encourages local businesses to expand. Investors seek stability and predictability. Therefore, NATCOM's efforts would reduce armed conflicts, safeguard critical infrastructure, and protect businesses. This stability would boost economic growth. Today, power infrastructure are daily vandalized, the businesses and homes in darkness due to increasing activities of unemployed young people in the country. 


On improving regional trade and integration, an efficient arms control facilitates cross-border trade. NATCOM's collaboration with neighboring countries would enhance regional integration. Legal arms trade can thrive without endangering security. This benefits Nigeria's trade relations within ECOWAS. 


The economic toll of insecurity — lost productivity, healthcare expenses, and infrastructure damage — is substantial and NATCOM's preventive measures would drastically reduce these costs, redirecting resources from security responses to development projects that would yield long-term benefits through its grassroots related operations. 


Having established some of the gains of establishing NATCOM, it is important to note that it must be established by an Act of the National Assembly and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu to give legal framework that ensures the commission's authority, funding, and operational autonomy. 



NCCSALW Vs NATCOM 


The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), under the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), had recently issued a statement that NATFORCE and NATCOM, are not part of Nigeria’s security architecture and have no affiliation with any official security agency, insisting that the outfits are not backed by federal law, lack the authority to recruit, and are not approved to operate as security organizations. 


The statement also noted that the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), remains the National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons in Nigeria, coordinating with all relevant stakeholders to implement the UN and ECOWAS Plans of Action on the control of small arms and light weapons, adding that in 2021, the office of the NSA directed the dismantling of illegal security outfits involved in extorting and harassing Nigerians. 


This development prompted this instigative research on National Commission for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NATCOM), leading to the above exposé on the planned establishment of the Commission and the gains of an Act of the National Assembly, presidential assent, and culminating in an official gazette of the federal government of Nigeria.  


Nevertheless, the public was reminded that NATFORCE and NATCOM are not part of Nigeria’s security architecture and have no affiliation with any official security agency. 


However, in the course of this investigative research, it was found that the recent statement that was credited to NCCSALW on the activities of NATCOM could be seen in some quarters as an affront on the National Assembly, particularly the 10th Assembly, which listed the recommittal of the NATCOM Bill 2023 on its order paper. 


The Media in July 2023 widely reported that the 10th National Assembly has commenced the recommittal process of Bills passed by the 9th Assembly but were neither assented to nor assent withheld by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before the expiration of the preceding Assembly. 


Available records from the office of the Clerk to the National Assembly, according to media reports, showed that Bills that fall into this category, were 44, one of which, is the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, their Ammunition and other Related Materials (Ratification and Enforcement) Bill 2023, otherwise passed as NATCOM Bill 2023, which was earlier transmitted to former President Muhammadu Buhari in April 2023. 


Investigations have also revealed that NATCOM inherited a large number of volunteer workforce from NATFORCE and have recruited some of those who have expressed interest. 


However, it was found that the volunteers have no terms of service or remunerations attached since NATCOM has not been existing as part of the Nigerian security architecture but as a group of volunteers seeking legal backing to help support the existing national security architecture for a safer country. 


These volunteers, it was found, are able bodied Nigerians, including professionals and retirees who have offered their services free of charge and funding their activities from their pockets. 


Findings also revealed that the volunteers have patriotically offered themselves to provide intelligence/information on illicit arms and ammunitions in the hands of non-state actors while awaiting presidential assent and official gazetting of the NATCOM Act by President Tinubu — NATCOM has a record of collaboration/complimentary services with the Nigeria Police Force in time past. 


In the meantime, the impact of NCCSALW at the office of the NSA, which was established in May 2021 by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has not been fully felt, hence the security situation and the number of illegal arms and ammunitions flowing into the hands of non-state actors and into many ungoverned spaces in the country still prevails. 


Therefore, NCCSALW should instead find a common ground for collaboration, encouragement, and synergy with NATCOM, which has pursued it's legislative backing for over 10 years for enabling Act and legal teeth, which was eventually gotten when the 9th Assembly passed the NATCOM bill into law and awaiting Presidents assent and with the recommittal of the bill by the 10th Assembly. 


It's therefore shocking to read the NCCSALW under the office of the NSA portraying itself as though it is seeking to frustrate the ongoing efforts of both NATCOM and the 10th National Assembly who are determined to address the prevailing issue of insecurity in Nigeria. 


NCCSALW should explore possibilities for collaboration with NATCOM volunteers just like the Nigeria Police Force did in time past. 


While the NCCSALW serves as a stopgap measure, NATCOM's establishment by an Act of the National Assembly promises a more robust, sustainable approach to small arms control. And by signing the NATCOM Bill into law, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would have strengthened Nigeria's security architecture and contribute to regional stability and prosperity. 


President Tinubu's leadership as ECOWAS chairman presents a historic moment for Nigeria hence establishing NATCOM would demonstrate our commitment to regional security, youth empowerment, and economic prosperity. By controlling proliferation of small arms and light weapons will pave the way for a safer more prosperous Nigeria. Let us, therefore, patriotically seize this opportunity and build a resilient future for our country and desist from unnecessary inter-agency rivalry which portend a great danger to national security and advances made thus far.

The National Transition Committee (NTC) of Labour Party, the highest public engagement body of the party headed by a former chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Statesman Omar Abdulwaheed, has hailed the suspension of Barr. Julius Abure from the Labour Party by the ward executive council of his home ward and state.

Delivering the commendation today in Abuja through the chairman of the NTC's sub-committee on Media and Publicity, Comrade Tony Akeni, Omar Abdulwaheed said the courageous action led by Abure's ward chairman, Mr. Thompson Ehiguese, and his ward officers, which has been corroborated and consolidated by the state executive council of the state Labour Party under Mr. Kelly Ogbaloi deserves, nothing but applause.

"As a law-abiding party and process respecting committee," Omar said, "we have been waiting for the documents of the suspension action before putting a statement out. The National Transition Committee received them today and our legal experts have thoroughly analysed them. The infractions adduced in the document of suspension correspond with solid evidences of Abure's incredible combinations of gross administrative, financial and anti-party misconduct already long in our possession."

"Having done that due diligence," the Labour veteran continued, "I wish to assure you that our party in Edo state have done a splendid and legally impeccable job of Abure's suspension, and could even have gone farther!"

Speaking through Comrade Akeni, Omar said: "From a plethora of evidence before us, the Abure we all now know is a walking mountain of anti-party contraventions against both our party's constitution and the laws of Nigeria. Like a burst abscess, the suspension comes as a huge relief to the body of our party both in Edo state and nationwide."

Omar further said, "Let me make a further necessary clarification on the action that just took place a few days ago in Edo state. Please, note this very well. Julius Abure was not suspended from our party as national chairman of the party but as an ordinary member of the party.

"This is because by the Justice Gabriel Kolawole consent judgement of March 20, 2018 and by the mediation terms of a sequel irrefutable agreement signed on the 27th of June 2022 between the suspended former national chairman, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the incontestable owners and landlord of Labour Party, an agreement whose terms and documents were witnessed and are in co-custody of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Abure's chairmanship tenure and his entire National Working Committee (NWC) comprehensively terminated since the 27th of June, 2023.

"The documents of that judgement and its legal ramifications are in the public domain for every sincere Labour Party member, public researcher and legal pundit to examine for themselves," the NTC chairman, Omar Abdulwaheed, stated.

Following the above clarification, the veteran labour statesman informed journalists of the nation that the transition committee has received information that Edo state Labour Party members, supporters and Obidients are visiting Abuja soon to present documents of their suspension actions served on Abure to our party's national headquarters and to buttress their grievances to national law enforcement authorities in the country's capital.

Omar asked the Nigeria police, DSS and other law enforcement authorities to give maximum protection to the peaceful outings of the Edo Labour Party stakeholders while they are in Abuja, and not reverse the case where moneybag crime suspects like Abure are protected and because of corrupt inducements are supported to turn the police against the actual victims of their crimes.

Fielding questions from journalists, Comrade Tony Akeni, chairman of the NTC's sub-committee on Media and Publicity, threw light on the grievances of the Edo Labour Party suspension action on Abure.

"To be double sure of the facts before our NTC," Akeni said, "I spoke last night (Saturday May 25th) with the secretary of our party in Edo state, Comrade Fred Akhere. You need armour plates to protect your ears from the shocking escapades of Abure's financial craftmanship revealed by Akhere."

According to Comrade Akeni, Akhere told him: "Abure received over #460million from the sales of governorship forms alone within less than two months earlier this year. As the state secretary of the party I am in a position to know, so I'm not guessing. This is besides unofficial sums running to much more from aspirants falling over themselves to ingratiate themselves to Abure in the run-up to the governorship primary.

"Abure and his co-fraudsters of the national exco drew similar cash rain in the Ondo state governorship primary of our party. I can tell you that Labour Party's chance in Ondo is completely doomed because in agreement among themselves they set up a candidate there they know can never win but is put up for trading with the APC governor in Ondo as Abure is doing with Obaseki here in Edo state.

"During the period spanning the general elections of 2023," Akhere continued, "literally billions of naira from Edo and other states of the country flowed into Abure's pockets from aspirants, candidates, enthusiastic donors and goodwill supporters of our party. We have clear information on how much our presidential candidate Peter Obi sent to Edo state for the presidential election alone of February 25, 2023. Abure gave to Edo state exco only #5million throughout the period to work for Peter Obi's presidential election. Yes, you heard me right: exactly #5million!

"We of the state exco had to scramble from pillar to post to make the difference as the nation's hub of the Obidient movement. Yet when you come to our state secretariat, you will not see a sign of such huge funding inflow to our party by way of physical and amenity improvement," Akhere lamented, beside himself with rage.

"Today," the state secretary Akhere continued, "the same Abure and our state's PDP governor, Godwin Obaseki, are hiding behind one finger exchanging billions of naira to sell out and sabotage the absolutely certain victory of our party's candidate, Barr. Olumide Akpata, in the forthcoming governorship election. Abure is so wicked that the devil has to be his student."

Confirming the squalid state of the Edo state secretariat of Labour Party, Comrade Tony Akeni said: "It is dingy, stripped of civilization and so repugnant it looks like a native doctor's shrine. It licks in every place like a sponge during rainy seasons when I visited last," the publicity head said.

Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation Calls for Respect of Rule of Law in Kano Emirate Dispute anf advises Sunusi Lamido Sunusi to give up the throne for peace to reign in the state.

The Foundation also called on the Kano State Government and the two emirs involved in the ongoing dispute to respect the rule of law in the interest of peace and stability in Kano State and Nigeria.

Speaking at a press conference in Bauchi, the Chairman of the Foundation, Sheikh Ibrahim Sheikh Dahiru, advised the emirs to take a vow of peace and brotherhood to save the lives of innocent people and allow peace to reign.

"In the interest of peace, we want justice to prevail. Since the court has intervened to maintain law and order, we expect each party to respect the rule of law," Sheikh Ibrahim said.

The Foundation chided the Kano State Government's decision to continue with the process of appointing the 16th Emir of Kano and dethroning the five emirs despite a court injunction.

Sheikh Ibrahim suggested that the current Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, could learn from the example of Sayyidina Hassan, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who left power to Mu'awiyyah in the interest of peace and brotherhood among the Muslim Ummah.

The Foundation also urged the National Assembly to amend the constitution and enact laws that will protect traditional rulers from being dethroned or appointed at the pleasure of politicians.

The Chairman called on the Kano State Government, the State House of Assembly, and the people of Kano to exercise caution and refrain from making decisions that may jeopardize the state's stability and exacerbate the suffering of the people.

"We want the parties to work together to build a brighter future for the people of Kano State and Nigeria, where justice, peace, and prosperity reign, and where the rights and dignity of all citizens are upheld and respected," he concluded.

The grand conspiracy from Northern Nigeria against the reemergence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term that was hinted at by the President's loyal political allies in the region is gradually but surely coming into the open.

The recent open declaration by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) that the North would work against Tinubu in 2027 is a clear indication that there are powerful forces at work to undermine the President's second term chances and set the stage for a carefully orchestrated plot against him.

This bold and unequivocal statement by the NEF has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, as it reveals a clear intent to thwart Tinubu's ambitions.

The fact that such a group has openly declared its opposition to Tinubu's bid speaks volumes about the deep-seated opposition and resistance he faces from outside and within his own political circles.

It is further evidence that there are powerful forces at play who are determined to derail his political aspirations with a concerted effort to block his path to a second term.

The alignment of key players like the Kwankwaso camp and the Atiku Abubakar forces against him further highlights the depth of this conspiracy. The connivance of leaders from the North and the self-serving greed of those within the Presidential Villa are enabling this plot to take root and thrive.

The emergence of key figures such as Alhaji Danbilki Kwamanda and Prof Khalifa Dikwa, who have openly criticized Tinubu's administration and suggested Kashim Shettima as alternative candidate for the presidency, sheds light on the depth of the conspiracy.

These individuals, along with the Kwankwaso camp and the Atiku Abubakar forces, are actively working to undermine Tinubu's drive and pave the way for their own agendas.

In the midst of this sinister plot, Alhaji Danbilki Kwamanda, along with other key figures such as Prof Khalifa Dikwa, have expressed their support for the North East Forum's position regarding the potential replacement of President Tinubu.

Alhaji Danbilki Kwamanda, the arrowhead for the Northwestern plank of the plan, has even gone so far as to suggest Vice President Kashim Shettima as a likely preferred candidate.

This stance was further solidified by Prof Khalifa Dikwa, the Dean of Borno Elders Forum, who has raised false concerns about the perceived weaknesses and lopsided nature of President Tinubu's appointments. These individuals seem to be united in their belief that a change in leadership is necessary.

The insidious nature of this conspiracy is further exemplified by the awarding of a 147 billion naira contract to a Katsina opposition party strongman by a serving minister in the administration. This blatant display of betrayal and manipulation underscores the extent to which those within President Tinubu's inner circle are willing to go to advance their own interests at the expense of the nation.

It is clear that President Tinubu is facing a formidable challenge from within his own ranks. The power struggle and backstabbing taking place behind the scenes threaten to derail his administration and undermine his legacy.

He must take immediate action to counteract the machinations of those seeking to undermine his aspiration. He must surround himself and listen to loyal and competent friends like the former Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje who have lots of useful insight to share.

It is time for Tinubu to identify and remove the Judases within his camp, and forge ahead with a team of individuals that is dedicated to upholding the values of justice and honest enterprise.

It is imperative that President Tinubu takes swift and decisive action to counteract these malicious maneuvers. The recent award of a 140 billion naira contract to an opposition member by a serving minister is a glaring example of the subversion taking place within his own administration.

The warning signals from high-ranking northern appointees in the Tinubu administration must therefore not be ignored. The President must heed the advice of his remaining two vigorous supporters and allies before it is too late. The time for complacency is over; President Tinubu must act decisively to protect his presidency and ensure the continued progress and prosperity of the nation.

Tinubu should be aware of the challenges he is facing from an emerging opposition that aims to weaken his support base in the northern region of the country.

Already, several of his loyal friends and partners, such as Nasir Elrufai, Yahaya Bello, and Aminu Bello Masari, have been marginalized through the opposition's manipulative tactics.

The only two allies left standing, Ganduje and Matawalle, are also under constant attack and defamation, with the ultimate goal of eroding Tinubu’s influence in the north. This concerted effort to dismantle Tinubu's support base is a clear indication of the threat posed by this emerging opposition.

Tinubu must take note of these developments and take necessary steps to safeguard his political interests in the northern region. It is imperative that he strengthens his alliances, engages in strategic planning, and remains vigilant against any attempts to undermine his position.

It is time to rise to the occasion, take control of the narrative, and assert his authority over those seeking to undermine him. The success of his administration and the future of the nation depend on his ability to navigate these treacherous waters and emerge victorious against the forces seeking to derail his leadership and future chances.

Only by remaining vigilant and steadfast in the face of adversity can he secure his place in history as a leader who stood firm against the forces of division and discord.

The National President Of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon Aminu Mu'azu Maifata, has on Behalf of the Executive Council (NEC) of the Association announced the appointment of Sir Itiako Ikpokpo (KSM) as the NEW ALGON Director General.

This was contained in a statement issued by the ALGON Media Office on Friday.

His appointment was sequel to his nomination by the National President and subsequent ratification by the National Executive Council at the 47th National Executive Council of the association held on March 21, 2024 in Abuja.

Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, a serial entrepreneur brings to the ALGON stable a decade of remarkable experience, practical know-how and active involvement in local government governance as former two-term Chairman of Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, two-term Chairman of ALGON in Delta State, one time Deputy National President of ALGON, and the Chief of Staff to the immidiate past National President of ALGON, Hon. Kolade David Alabi.

Sir Ikpokpo was the President, Students' Union, University of Port Harcourt and is a Graduate of History and Diplomatic Studies from same university.

The National leadership of ALGON anticipates that Sir Itiako Ikpokpo will reposition the Association and drive critical synergy towards the improvement of local government governance in tune with emerging national and socio-political realites.

His appointment is with immediate effect.

He takes over from Hajiya Binta Bello whose tenure expired in November.

He is married to Lady Peikumor Itiako-Ikpokpo and blessed with children.

He call for caring for rural defenseless workers whose future have been facing existential challenges due to poor leadership at the local governments where all style of names have been given to Chairmen, transition, caretaker, and so on as these workers risks care because they are treated with the disrespect. intermittent payment of salaries and denial of other entitlements of workers.

He further stated that the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), and Trade Union Congress (TUC) alongside the National Union of Local Government Employees should close more ranks with ALGON to support in the on going sensitization and advocacy for strengthening the local government system through the constitution amendment.

The ALGON National President also noted that the workers workers in the local government councils are the least cared for due to non elected officers leaving the essential business administration in the hands of political cronies and families there by inhibiting the desired workforce and contribution to the growth of the state’s Gross Domestic Products alongside its internally generate revenue profile.

Hon Maifata expressed his hope that the occasion, though popular in the media space, has little to give or mean to the rural workers whose salaries, wage or income does not provide those security and economic safety nets as such will play vital role towards the rapid development.

He observed that while the workers celebration connects with the International Labour Movement as celebrated every May 1, it has become imperative for the people and government to appreciate and place more value on workers of the councils to give them sense of belonging.

He call for implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme to be cascaded down to Local Governments all over the country. To achieve this he said require the support and synergy with the organized labour and the association.

The ALGON National President had in his speech remarked that as pivotal as councils are to grassroots development, it remains a priority of every state government to support it's development initiative that connects to it's primary needs like the provision of primary health care needs, education, agriculture, job creation, aggregation of programmes and projects that directly affect the well being of the local population.


He is equally of the view that much as technical support is critical to grassroots development, the repositioning of industry clusters like agriculture sector to add to monthly pay will be a survival strategy of most to the rural dwellers and civil servants which he lamented that unfortunately, insecurity has distanced them from farms while dysfunctional local government system has led to neglect in the provision of infrastructures. These according to him were red flags that needs to be addressed.

The All-Africa Stucents Unian (AASU), a continental Students' movement and the umbrella body for all national students' unions in Africa, has expressed interest in a case involving a student activist, Comrade Siriman Niaré, in a letter to the Interim President of Mali, Colonel Assimi Goïta.

Comrade Niaré was said to have been arrested after a fight between some student activists of the Association of Pupils and Students of Mali (AEEM) led to the death of their colleagues.


The letter addressed to the president through the Ambassador of Mali to Nigeria, was titled “Expression Of Interest in the case of Comrade Siriman Niaré “Demand for Expedited Trial & Release”.

The students appealed to the President to for speedy trial or lease of the suspect.


The letter read, “Kindly receive the compliments of the continental Students movement under the auspices of the All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU) – the umbrella body for all national students’ unions on the continent that includes Association of Pupils and Students of Mali (AEEM), and others.

“We write to respectfully convey our interest in solidarity with Comrade Siriman Niaré Comrade who is the Continental Secretary General of the CESA and Secretary General of the Association of Pupils and Students of Mali (AEEM) who was taken into custody for weeks now following an incident.

“Information made available to my office by other Leaders of both CESA and AEEM revealed that on February 28, 2024 on the hill of knowledge, a fight took place between activists of the Association of Pupils and Students of Mali (AEEM).

“Unfortunately, the situation caused the death of a friend from the Faculty of Economics and Management.

“We wish to at this point regret the unfortunate incidence and convey our heartfelt condolences to the Government and Peoples of Mali, as well as the family of the deceased – while anticipating measure to forestall future reoccurence.

“Finally – we write to officially request for immediate intervention and EXPRESS OUR INTEREST in the case of Comrade Siriman Niaré and his Demand for Expedited Trial and/or Release”, the students appealed.

The continental students thanked the president in anticipation of his kind immediate response.

Chairman of Lafia Local Government Council of Nasarawa State and Association of Local Governments Nigeria (ALGON), Nasarawa State chapter, Hon. Maifata Aminu Mu'azu, has emerged as the National President of the association.


He takes over from Hon. Kolade Alabi, who presided over the affairs of the association from April 2019 to March, 2024.

Until his election, Hon. Maifata Mu'azu served at the National Executive Council, (NEC) of ALGON as National Treasurer and National Deputy President respectively.

Hon. Mu'azu holds a Bachelor and Master's degrees in Economics from the University of Jos and Nasarawa State University.

He was lecturer at the Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia between 2003 and 2018. Hon. Mu'azu served as Special Adviser on Solid Mineral Development to the Governor Umaru Tanko Al- Makura of Nasarawa State from 2017- 2018.

Hon. Maifata Mu'azu is expected to bring his tested intellect, proven and vast experience to bear in the acceleration of ALGON's vision of promoting efficient and grassroot driven local government governance and pursue effective partnerships with critical national, state and international stakeholders.

He is happily married and the union is blessed with children.

A traditional ruler in the South East region, His Royal Majesty (HRM), Eze-Igwe Willy Ezugwu, has congratulated the immediate past Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, as he celebrates his 60th birthday.


The monarch, in his birthday massage described the former Governor as the “people's Governor who elevated good governance narrative in Enugu State before leaving office.

According the traditional ruler, who doubles as the Eze Ogbozarra III of Opi Ancient Kingdom and Igwe of Ibagwa Opi Autonomous Community, “Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, while in office, was known for treating all parts of the state equally throughout his eight years tenure.”

In his message, he added, “Though, somehow, you were misunderstood, particularly in your choice of his successor, but, today, we can all testify that his preferred candidate for his party is not disappointing the people and has not betrayed the trust the former Governor reposed in him as evident in the last few months of his administration.”


The Monarch prayed for the immediate past Governor, saying, “as a man of peace, a good in all ramifications, that you are, may your Diamond Jubilee take you to higher place.

Residents of Obukpa Community in university town of Nsukka in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, have raised the alarm over what they described as impending epidemic.


The residents, who spoke on Friday, hinged their fears on a leaking sewage at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

Indigenes of the community, Mr Chisom Ugwu and Chief Christian Odume told newsmen that a burst sewage had spread its content right into the community, causing discomfort and threatening the health of the people of the area.

Recall the the community had dragged the university to court over ecological concerns, bordering on alleged environmental degradation due to ongoing construction of multimillion hostels that allegedly re-channeled flood water into Obukpa community.

The case is before an Enugu State High Court in suit No: N/86/2020, which was filed by Hon Nnaemeka Aleke on behalf of the community, seeking to restrain the university and Viagem Property and Investment Limited from further development of the 11,900-room hostel over the alleged environment degradation in Obukpa Community.

The university's host community, through its counsel, claimed that construction of the hostel by UNN created erosion that destroyed lands, roads, houses and other properties of Ajuona Obukpa people. It added that it also became a source of mosquito infestation that made malaria a common illness in the community.

“The plaintiff claims that the roads leading into and out of Ajuona Obukpa Community are devastated. They claimed that they have suffered unquantifiable damage to their properties generally and that the environment was gradually becoming uninhabitable due to construction activities of the first defendant, which is becoming worse”, the counsel said.

The community also sought an order of the court directing the first and second defendants to stop the building of the hostel until they control the erosion devastating lives and properties in Ajuona Obukpa Autonomous Community.

Also sought is an interlocutory injunction restraining the defendants, particularly the second defendant, from the construction of the hostel in the premises of the first defendant or any other construction work in the university pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

The parties have all presented their cases, with the matter now adjourned for written address of counsels.

It was equally learnt that a few days ago, the judge handling the case, other officials and representatives of both parties in the suit, were at the location to have an on the spot assessment of the claims.

However, indigenes of Obukpa community told newsmen that the situation had worsened with the burst sewage, which they said was pushing its contents into their community.

“The entire community is in a mess; faeces has been released into our community from that burst sewage.

“It is so bad and we are urging urgent action before it throws our community into avoidable health hazards.

“If you come to our community now, you will find it difficult to breathe,” Ugwu and Odume told the media.

The Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), Enugu State Chapter, has congratulated and rejoiceed with the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Barr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, on his award as the Sun Governor Of The Year and other awards earlier received.

The Chairman of the state chapter of CNPP, Dr. Afam Ani, while speaking to journalists in Enugu, expressed joy with the governor, who was conferred with the award barely two weeks after he won the New Telegraph Governor of the Year Award for His Courage in Leadership.

Expressing profound gratitude to God, he hailed the governor “for his examplary leadership in Enugu State.”

The CNPP chairman noted that “the governor is a first term governor in Nigeria that has consistently won multiple awards over his giant strides in governance in recent years.

He reminded “NdiEnugu that when the governor talked about disruptive innovation, it was absolutely strange and uncanny to many people.”

He noted that the “CNPP, Enugu state chapter, is happy that the world over is beginning to appreciate the material meaning of the phrase especially as it concerns leadership.”

The CNPP chairman added that “Enugu state is making massive progress under the present administration.”

He concluded by saying, “the “CNPP is saying congratulations to our hard working governor and, reminding him that to whom much is given, just like the good people of Enugu State massively voted for him during the 2023 general elections, that much is as well expected.”

In partnership with the Association Of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to train local government officials on transparency and accountability in line with President Bola Tinubu administration's Renewed Hope Agenda and fight against corruption.

This was known at a press briefing at the ALGON national headquarters in Abuja by the initiator and Executive Director of the Iykon Global Foundation, Hight Chief Ephraim Iyke Nwonu, told journalists that the training workshop will hold later in the month.


He said, “Worried by the endemic consequences of corruption and transparency gap in both government and private sectors, and in keeping faith with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in which fighting corruption and ensuring transparency is a priority, EFCC in collaboration with ALGON is conducting a training/sensitization workshop between 27th February — 7th March, 2024 at EFCC Training Academy, Karu, Abuja.

“The event focuses on transparency and accountability in governance at local level, with Local Government officials as key participants.

“The training will also enhance the preventive measures against corruption and financial crimes as well as inculcating international standard best practices among officials of the 3-tier of government, thereby deepening good governance at the grassroots”, he added.

The ALGON National President, Hon Alabi Kolade David, who represented a the press briefing by his Social Assistant on Administration, Chief Dimeji Lamuren, noted that for reasons of unallocated circumstances lack of transparency and corruption “have been the bane of where we are today.”

Hon. Alabi noted that he has been an advocate of bottom-up approach to all issues, rather than top-down approach that has been ongoing; the grassroots is where it must begin, saying that change in attitude should begin from the grassroots.

....Endorse Dambature National Coordinator of CSOs



A coalition of civil society groups and ex-militant leaders from across Nigeria has passed a vote of confidence on Group General Manager of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited), Engr Mele Kolo Kyari. 

The groups also endorsed the President of Arewa Youths for Good Leadership, Amb. Abdul Dambature, as the National Coordinator of the Almagametion of Civil Society Groups in Nigeria.


The endorsement came after an emergency meeting of the groups, under the banner of the Association of Concerned Citizens of the Six Geo-political Zones in Nigeria and the National Association of Niger Delta Ex-militant Leaders, held in Abuja on February 12, 2024. 

According to a communique issued at the end of the meeting, the groups pledged their full support and cooperation to the leadership of the GCEO of NNPC Limited, Engr. Kyari and the newly endorsed CSOs National Coordinator, Dambature.

They pledged that they will not engage in any form of protest or violence that will disrupt the oil sector or over the activities of the NNPC Limited.

The groups lauded Engr Kyari for his remarkable achievements as the GCEO of NNPC Limited.

They listed such achievements to include:


- The completion of the AKK Pipeline Project, which will boost gas supply and power generation in the country¹².

- The passage of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which will usher in a new era of transparency, accountability and performance excellence in the oil and gas sector³⁴.

- The incorporation of NNPC Limited under CAMA, which will make the national oil company more competitive and profitable.

- The uninterrupted fuel supply, which has ensured stability and affordability of petroleum products for Nigerians.


The groups also commended Dambature for his role in promoting good leadership and national unity among the youths of the country. 

They then urged other Nigerians to join them in supporting the efforts of NNPC Limited and the new CSOs leader, Amb. Dambature in their support for the transformation of the oil and gas sector for increased revenue to the country and to enhance the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

The Enugu State High Court sitting in Enugu, the state capital, has found a man, Okolie Chigozie Michael, 32, guilty of unlawfully killing his son. He committed the offence when he was 28 year-old in 2020.


Delivering her judgement on the matter on Wednesday, Hon. Justice C. C. Ani found the accused guilty of murder and sentenced him to death by hanging.


The court found him guilty after it was proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused, Okolie Chigozie Michael, on April 14, 2020 at Emene in Enugu, took his son, Igwilo Chimereucheya, to the bush and strangled him.

Regrettably, when the child didn't die, the convict hit him on chest, which resulted to the child passing out hot feaces and urine before giving up the ghost.

The convict was accused of using his fingers to scratch and inflicted bodily injury on his son, making it appear as if the child was involved in a fight, after which the convict took him home, cleaned him up and laid him on the bed, leaving him as though he was asleep and attempted to escape.

The mother of the 1 year and seven months old child raised the alarm and attracted neighbours when she noticed that the child was dead.

In itself judgment, the court agreed with the Prosecuting Counsel, Barr. Nkechi Ogbodo of the Department of Public Prosecution, Ministry of Justice, Enugu, who had during the trial tendered evidence before the court, including autopsy report to proved that indeed the deceased was strangled to death.

It was gathered that the convict is a serial abuser, who constantly beats up the mother of his son.

It was further gathered that he was earlier made to sign an undertaken at the police station at the insistence of their landlord and his wife's employer, due to constant threats that he will kill both the mother and her child.

Consequently, he was cautioned at different police stations to desist from his violent acts before the incident that led to the death of his son, Chimereucheya, occurred.

It was reported that on certain occasion, the convict inflicted injury on the deceased's penis because he urinated on the bed.

Justice Ani noted in her ruling that it was evident from the confession by the culprit on how he murdered the deceased showed that it was voluntary and premeditated act, not under duress.

Therefore, the court found him guilty of murder and sentenced him to death accordingly, haven committed the committed the offence punishable under Section 274(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004.

While Okolie Chigozie Michael, the defendant in the case, is a native of Ibeme Obingwa in Abia State, the mother of the child hails from Imezie Owa in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu “to struggle through the hard path by rethinking Nigeria's relationship with the Bretton Woods Institutions, realistically assessing the performance of his appointees and sacking those constituting a cog in the wheel of the progress of his administration through their clear unproductivity and sabotage.”

The CNPP, a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, while reacting to the call by the called by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the federal government to completely phase out petrol and electricity subsidies in the country in its 'Post Financing Assessment (PFA)' report.

The umbrella association of all registered political parties and political associations in Nigeria noted in the statement that “restoring macroeconomic stability in Nigeria should come from homegrown policies and programmes as IMF solutions have never aided Nigeria's economic recovery, rather our economic woes worsened every time Bretton Woods Institutions' advisories were implemented in Africa.

“While removal of subsidy, due to the attendant corruption that bedevilled its payment was desirable, it was akin to shooting down Nigeria's economy by implementing subsidy removal policy without functional refineries for local production of petroleum products.

“The call by IMF for the complete phase out of petrol and electricity subsidies in the country is a suggestion to the Bola Tinubu administration to inflict more hardship on already suffering masses of Nigeria.


“Has the IMF ever advised the USA and European countries on removal of subsidies on cotton, which has been detrimental to one of Africa’s leading cotton exporters, Burkina Faso?

“It's on record that in Europe in 2019, €38.2 billion was spent on direct payments to farmers and €13.8 billion on rural development, with a further €2.4 billion supported the market for agricultural products. Has the IMF ever spoken about energy and agricultural subsidies in the USA and the European countries?

“We therefore urge President Bola Tinubu to focus on homegrown solutions to Nigeria's economic crisis and jettison policy advisories from the IMF and other Bretton Woods Institutions.

“We equally call on Mr. President to sack all unproductive appointees and identify those who are engaging in economic sabotage, especially as regards revenue generation in the oil and gas sector, and relieve them of their duties to increase foreign exchange earnings”, the CNPP counselled.

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) and over 38 Civil Society Organisations, under the umbrella of the Coalition Of National Civil Society Organisations (CNCSOs) have described online reports linking Nigeria's Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to alleged multibillion naira oil bunkering and contract-splitting fraud as “the handiwork of a frustrated syndicate involved in stealing of Nigeria's crude oil.”

Some online media platforms had reposted an allegation that a preliminary investigations estimated that the Naval Chief had accepted over $170 million in bribes over the past six months alone.

However, in a statement jointly signed by the CNPP's Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema and the National Secretary of the CNCSOs, Alhaji Ali Abacha, they described the allegations as “dead on arrival as efforts to truncate the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration's renewed quest to mitigate the stealing of the country's crude oil is the target of the disgruntled ring's attack on Ogalla.

“We strongly believe that it was based on Ogalla's track records of service that prompted Mr. President to trust him with the appointment in the first place and he has in the last six months shown that President Tinubu did not make any mistake in his choice of the Naval Chief.

“It has since become evident that since the Chief of Naval Staff launched the Nigerian Navy's “Operation Delta Sanity”, which has been embraced by the government and leaders of the Niger Delta states, the oil thieves are increasingly uncomfortable.

“The new anti-crude oil theft tactical operation initiated by the Chief of Naval Staff and his effort to provide necessary equipment for personnel have become a serious nightmare for the enemies of the country's economy due to its holistic and robust roadmap against crude oil theft and other forms of illegalities on Nigeria's territorial waters.


“The Nigerian Navy in its reaction to the syndicated allegations expressly disclosed that all the vessels alleged to have been released, which was the basis of the bogus $170 million allegedly received by the Naval Chief in bribes, are still in the custody and undergoing investigation.

“The Navy said unambiguously and we quote: “Indeed, all arrested vessels mentioned in the publication that were involved in crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering are being investigated and none of such vessels has been released as alleged.”

“So, if the basis for the allegation, which is the arrested vessels, are still in custody, we call on the Chief of Naval Staff to disregard the detractors and continue with his renewed efforts against oil thieves in support of President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Nigerians are currently suffering from severe economic hardship and we urge President Tinubu and the Naval Chief not to be deterred by the smear tactic and discrediting actions of the oil stealing syndicate who are increasing unable to continue in their nefarious trade.

“It is on record that the CNPP and CNCSOs have been in the forefront of the agitation for an end to the brazen thieving of Nigeria's crude oil in the last eight years and we will back every genuine efforts aimed mitigating the age-long economic sabotage for the benefit of the suffering masses.

“On the contract splitting allegation, the Navy has issued a clear response and there is no need over-flogging a dead horse as we call on President Tinubu not to succumb to the antics of the already drowning oil thieves who would naturally fight back by all means possible, including the ongoing syndicated blackmail”, the CNPP and the CSOs said.

Frontline pressure group and human rights advocate, the Save Enugu Group (SEG), has sent a Save-Our-Souls (SOS) alert to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian armed forces and Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah as the Chief Security Officer of Enugu State over the activities of a man terrorising residents of the state, using men in military uniforms.

The SEG in a statement signed by its National Secretary, Comrade James Ezema on behalf of the group noted that “beyond brazen intimidation of residents, the man identified as Mr. Oke Hyacinth Ayogu and also known as Okechukwu Ayogu, has been using men in military uniforms to dispossess hapless widows and other citizens of their properties.”


The Save Enugu Group maintained that “the man in question, who fronts as a businessman in Enugu State and Managing Director of Hymac Real Ltd, a real estate development company laid claim to the NSE land and property, including other adjoining plots within the neighbourhood.

“We have it on good authority that Mr. Ayogu prides himself as an associate of the Chief of Army Staff, General Abiodun Lagbaja, thereby portraying the military authorities in a bad light among the residents of the state.

“So far, there are allegations that Mr. Ayogu, who has turned into a flourishing land grabber in the state, dispossessing some communities of their properties.

“Our preliminary findings indicate that Mr. Oke Hyacinth Ayogu is a Nigerian army deserter and have reportedly claimed the military rank of captain. His last known place of service is the 65 Brigade Sokoto.

“He has been accused of equally claiming to be a military spy on a mission to identify members of the Independent People Of Biafra (IPOB) in the state.

“He has been fingered in several land grabbing cases involving properties belonging to high profile individuals, and organisations, and widows no matter the validity of the land documents.


“In this Save-Our-Souls (SOS) alert to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian armed forces, we plead with Mr. President to order investigation into the circumstances that led to the deployment of soldiers as excorts to a suspected army deserter.

“We equally call on Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who is the Chief Security Officer of Enugu State to take note and curb the excesses of Mr. Ayogu to avert an imminent breakdown of law and order in some communities as a result of his activities”, the statement concluded.

The national Leadership of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), has announced the appointment of an Acting Director General (DG) of its Association, this followed the expiration of the tenure of its erstwhile DG, Mrs. Binta Adamu Bello, recently.

According to an earlier resolution of the National Executive Council (NEC) and the Board of Trustees (BOT) on the need to ensure that vacuum does not exist in administration of its national office, NEC conveyed its resolve to appoint the new Acting DG vie a letter to Barr Enekwe.

The 45th National Executive Council meeting of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has ended in Abuja the nations capital.

The meeting venue was agog when one Abdullahi Maje the former Chairman of Suleja local government and Chairman of the proscribed IMC made entry to the venue while meeting was in progress.

Members and other stakeholders at the venue were thrown into pandemonium for few minutes his presence was announce by the ALGON National President.

Alabi noted that a guest in the person of Hon. Maje was in their midst.

It was a mix bag as sights were transfixed with recetion and sounds dropped to slight-pin-drop-silence; during the pause for his introduction. The situation later gave way to maze and disquiet amongst members.

Hon. Maje was hailed and allowed to have the floor for few minutes.

He rose to greet the Association and praised them for the commitment in the drive for grassroots-centric governance noting through his brief remark that he was formerly championing the proscribed Interim Management Commitment (IMC) of ALGON in a misunderstood manner but said the idea is dead.

He said that having left office way back a year ago and having come to terms with realities on ground, it was incumbent on him to jettison the ill-concieved faction.

Hon. Maje described ALGON as one family and said that he was happy to reunite with them.

Rising to commend his strength of character and profound resolve to let go the past, the Chairman of Jigawa Local Governments Alhaji Bala Usman Chamo Chairman Dutse LGA said he was very happy to see his good friends, Maje to have reunited to their fold. This according to him demonstrates love and strength of character by Maje to finally identify with the family, he pointed that ALGON is one.

Also, the outgoing NEC representative of Bauchi Hon. Yusuf Garba expressed happiness to have seen his personal friend Hon Maje in their midst. He said that peace and togetherness was necessary to move the grassroots government forward in the interest of millions of people residing in the Councils.

The meeting which was the last in the year 2023 saw a huge attendance of both principal officers, NEC, BOT, Management with impressive size at Abuja Continental Hotel.

Top of it's resolution was hinged on Global acceptance in the decentralization of power to Local Governments which was a take home message from the ALGON National President who just returned from Brussels, Belgium meeting, captioned 'Cities and Regions for international partnerships 2023 Forum' with the theme: localizing global gateway, connecting intermediary Cities and investing together for more inclusive and Innovative Sustainable Cities and Regions.

The Association's decision making body used the meeting to announce it's take off of advocacy for strengthening the local government through campaign for conduct of elections against the backdrop of use of caretakers to divert the Councils funds.

ALGON expressed it's resolve to unite under one roof to fight for the democratization of local governance leveraging on the huge information and strategies for attracting direct investment to the Councils at the disposal of the National President having traversed continents of the Africa, Ashia, Europe and America with issues of rural development taking the front stage as well as and devolution of power to the sub-nationals and amongst other key issues of national interests.

A South East traditional ruler, who was a top political activist, His Royal Majesty, Eze-Igwe Willy Ezugwu, has felicitated top oil merchant and the Chairman of Atlas Oranto Petroleum International, Prince Arthur Eze, on his 75th birth anniversary.

The monarch, who is the Eze Ogbozarra III of Opi Ancient Kingdom, the Igwe of Ibagwa Ogbozarra Opi Autonomous Community, and the Eze Ka Eze 1 of Ideke land, Nsukka, congratulated the entrepreneur and statesman in his goodwill message as contained in a statement he personally signed and issued to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Eze-Igwe 1 of Ibagwa described Prince Arthur Eze as “an outstanding Igbo son whose lifetime achievements have placed him at the top of where decision are taken, not just in Igbo land but also in the country as a whole.

“Prince Arthur Eze has so distinguished himself so much that he no longer needs any further introduction in any part of the country once his name is mentioned”, Eze-Igwe Ezugwu noted.

A Coalition of SouthWest Groups, under its umbrella body, the Coalition Of The Yoruba Youth Network (YYN), comprising the South West Blossom Brigade (SBB), the Odua Youth Frontiers (OYF), the Yoruba Youth Empowerment Forum (YYEF), the Voice Of Yoruba Youths (VOYY), the Odua Progressive People Assembly (OPPA) and no fewer than fourteen other youth organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) have reacted to the Court of Appeal judgment on the Kano State governorship election petition between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as it relates to the integrity of the Nigerian Justice System.


The Coalition urged the Supreme Court of Nigeria, as the highest judicial authority in the country, to exercise its responsibility to safeguard the integrity of the judiciary by thoroughly reviewing the case.

They noted that “by conducting a thorough review of these rulings, the Supreme Court can demonstrate its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all.”

At a world press conference in Lagos, South West of Nigeria, the groups insisted that it will be detrimental to the principle of justice and democracy in the country.

Speaking on behalf of the Coalition of Southwest Groups, Comrade Razak Olukayode, argued that a similar situation in Osun State, as presented itself in the Kano State governorship election petition, did not lead to the nullification of the election of Senator Ademola Adeleke.

He said, “This coalition of Southwest groups is deeply concerned about recent controversial Appeal Court rulings on the Kano State Governorship election, which has raised serious questions about the integrity of Nigeria's justice system.

“We wish to caution against compromising the nation's judiciary and emphasize the importance of maintaining its independence, transparency, and integrity.

“In the case of the Kano Governorship election, the ruling of the Court of Appeal has raised doubts about the fairness of the nation's judiciary and the legitimacy of the electoral process.

“This ruling severely jeopardizes the expected role of the judiciary as the cornerstone of democracy and justice in any nation.

“We observe that the Court of Appeal decision in the Kano case of Abba vs APC has deviated from established principles of electoral jurisprudence regarding the issue of nomination and sponsorship, which falls under the exclusive purview of pre-election matters.

“Various judicial authorities, including the recent Peter Obi v INEC case, have emphasized that only the Federal High Court has jurisdiction to adjudicate over nomination issues”, the Coalition said.

According to the groups, the “Tribunal in the Abba vs APC case correctly stated that nomination is a pre-election matter but could not make a pronouncement on the issue due to lack of jurisdiction.

“We highlight the injustice of upholding the Tribunal's decision to nullify 166,000 votes from the tally of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and sacking the incumbent governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

“The Appeal Court's decision to uphold the nullification of such a significant number of votes without proper justification undermines the democratic fabric of the nation and raises questions about the impartiality of the judiciary.

“The decision to nullify 166,000 votes from the NNPP's tally in the Kano governorship election raises questions about the consistency and fairness of their judgments. They further argued, however, that “it is essential to note that similar irregularities were present in the case of Governor Adeleke, where the Court of Appeal ruled against nullifying votes.

“By nullifying votes that were deemed to be irregular in Kano, the court fails to address the contradiction in its ruling in the case of Governor Adeleke, where similar irregularities were present but not nullified.

“This inconsistency in applying legal principles undermines the principle of equal treatment before the law and raises doubts about the court's impartiality.

“Furthermore, the controversies surrounding the discrepancies between the judgment read out by the court and the content of the Certified True Copy of the Judgment in the Kano governorship election raise serious doubts about the transparency and integrity of the judicial process.

“These discrepancies have led to confusion and speculation among the public, further eroding public trust in the judiciary.

“While it is necessary to ensure that political parties adhere to electoral guidelines, the decision to upturn the entire election in Kano raises questions about the legitimacy of the democratic process.

“Arguably, this ruling undermines the people's right to choose their leaders and places excessive power in the hands of the judiciary. This controversy highlights the need for a balance between upholding the rule of law and respecting the democratic will of the people”, they further stated.

The contradictions in the Court of Appeal's decisions, they said, “highlight the need for a comprehensive review of the electoral laws and the judicial process. It sets a dangerous precedent for future elections.

“Nullifying the Kano votes and allowing those of Osun without clear and consistent legal reasoning can lead to a loss of public trust in the judiciary and the electoral process.

“Moreover, it opens the door for potential abuse of power, as political actors may exploit these inconsistencies to manipulate election outcomes.

“The court's role should be to provide clarity and consistency in interpreting and applying the law, rather than contributing to confusion and uncertainty.

“The controversies surrounding these rulings also raise questions about the accuracy and reliability of the court's decision-making process, suggesting a lack of attention to detail and procedural irregularities. This further erodes public confidence in the judiciary.

“We emphasize the need for a review of these rulings to ensure that justice is served and the rule of law is upheld. By reevaluating the evidence and legal arguments presented, the Supreme Court can rectify any potential errors made by the Court of Appeal, thereby restoring public faith in the judiciary.

“The review of the Court of Appeal rulings on the Kano governorship elections is not only necessary to rectify potential errors but also to reclaim the threatened integrity of the judiciary.

“The credibility and impartiality of the judiciary are fundamental to the functioning of a democratic society, as they ensure that citizens have confidence in the legal system.

“The Supreme Court, as the highest judicial authority in Nigeria, has the responsibility to safeguard the integrity of the judiciary. By conducting a thorough review of these rulings, the Supreme Court can demonstrate its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all.

“By rectifying any potential errors and ensuring that justice is served, the Supreme Court can reaffirm its commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining the principles of justice and fairness within the Nigerian democratic system.
The judiciary should exercise caution and impartiality when making decisions that impact the democratic process.

“In conclusion, we urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act as a true statesman and renowned democrat by upholding the principles of separation of powers, particularly the independence of the judiciary.

“By allowing the free, fair, and uninterrupted application of justice, President Tinubu will demonstrate his commitment to the rule of law and ensure the continued strength of Nigeria's democratic institutions. It is crucial for him to avoid any interference with the course of justice, keeping in mind that he himself has benefited from fair judicial adjudication.

“Interference with the course of justice poses a significant threat to the principles of separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary. Such interference can lead to a compromised justice system, eroding public trust and undermining the rule of law.

“President Tinubu must be cautious not to allow his name to be smeared in the dirty game of interference, as it would not only tarnish his reputation but also weaken the democratic fabric of the nation”, the Yoruba groups argued.

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has said that it is deeply worried about the current state of affairs within the Nigerian judiciary, describing the current trends of verdict emanating from the elections petition courts as a significant threat to the country's democracy.


In a press statement, NEF's Convener, Professor Ango Abdullahi, stressed the need for the judiciary to be cautious in its actions to prevent the erosion of its integrity, public trust, and confidence.

Professor Abdullahi expressed dismay at the controversies surrounding several recent judicial decisions, particularly those concerning elections. Such occurrences, he noted, are disheartening and pose a significant threat to the future of democracy in Nigeria.

"The potential consequences of these actions may ultimately validate the concerns raised by Retired Supreme Court Judge Dajjito Mohammed in his valedictory remarks about corruption and undue compromises within the judiciary.

“The Northern Elders Forum recognizes the importance of a fair and impartial judiciary in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding democratic principles.

“The judiciary plays a critical role in ensuring justice, protecting citizens' rights, and preserving the credibility of the electoral process. Any actions that compromise these principles undermine the very foundation of any democratic nation," Professor Abdullahi said.

NEF, therefore, called on all levels of the judiciary to uphold the highest ethical standards and maintain impartiality in their decision-making processes.

It urged judges to exhibit unwavering integrity and resilience when adjudicating cases, especially those pertaining to elections.

Professor Abdullahi expressed concerns about “the current trend that poses a threat of imminent judicial collapse has numerous Implications for constitutional democracy.”

The trend, he said, poses a significant threat to the judiciary, the institution responsible for upholding constitutional democracy.

He argues that if this trend continues, the nation risks descending into total anarchy.

"The judiciary plays a crucial role in sustaining constitutional democracy by ensuring the rule of law, protecting individual rights, and providing checks and balances on the other branches of government.

However, if the judiciary fails to fulfill its responsibilities, it can have severe implications for the stability and functioning of a democratic society.

"The current trend may encourage politicians to view politics as a do-or-die affair. When the judiciary fails to effectively adjudicate disputes and hold politicians accountable for their actions, it creates an environment where politicians feel emboldened to engage in corrupt practices, abuse their power, and disregard the principles of democracy. This erosion of trust in the judiciary can lead to a breakdown of democratic norms and values, ultimately undermining the legitimacy of the political system.

"Furthermore, a collapsing judiciary jeopardizes the safeguarding of constitutionalism, which is the cornerstone of any democratic society. The judiciary acts as the guardian of the constitution, ensuring that laws and policies adhere to the principles enshrined within it. Without a functioning judiciary, there is a risk of constitutional violations going unchecked, leading to the erosion of citizens' rights and freedoms. This can result in a loss of public confidence in the democratic process, as citizens may feel that their voices are not being heard or that their rights are being trampled upon," he said.

Professor Abdullahi therefore warned that only through a robust and functioning judiciary can Nigeria truly safeguard its democratic values and prevent the descent into anarchy.

"The fairness and transparency of the judicial system are vital for fostering public trust, confidence, and belief in the democratic process," Abdullahi said.

The Northern Elders Forum also urges relevant authorities to conduct thorough investigations into any allegations of corruption and undue compromise within the judiciary. Any substantiated claims should be swiftly prosecuted, serving as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to taint the judiciary's reputation.

"NEF believes that the judiciary should be an unbiased and independent arm of government, which is essential to the success of democracy and it should not be seen as compromising the integrity of its decisions particularly at a time when the nation is grappling with a range of challenges.

"NEF therefore calls on the judiciary to consider the consequences of its actions and decisions, and strive to uphold the rule of law in all its activities to justify the confidence reposed on it by Nigerians.

The NEF then called on the “public to remain vigilant in as to the direction the nation's judiciary is headed and not to hesitate to expose any perceived misconduct on the part of the judiciary.

"It is our firm belief that a strong and incorruptible judiciary is crucial for the development and progress of our great nation. The Northern Elders Forum, alongside other concerned stakeholders, will continue to closely monitor the conduct of the judiciary and advocate for its ethical revitalization to safeguard the interests of all Nigerians," the Northern Elders said.

Kigali, the Rwanda Capital, played host to the Commonwealth Local Governments Conference on the 14th November 2023 at the Kigali Convention Centre.


The international event came a few days after the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG-AFRICA) had its Exco and Pan-African meeting in Lagos-Nigeria on matters affecting local governments in the continent.


Officiated by the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente, the
the event witnessed the election of Hon. Kolade David Alabi the National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to the coveted position as Board Member of the Commonwealth of Local Governments, representing the West African Sub-region.

Hon. Alabi will be representing the interests of the entire West Africa, specifically on issues affecting Local Governments and Councils (Energy Transition, Blue Economy, Continental Free Trade, Partnership for African development at the grassroots, Trade relations, Good governance, strong democratic institutions, regional integration, climate change adaptation, funding, window and so on).


His rare elevation not only reflects his personal dedication and leadership qualities but also signifies a consensus endorsement of his capabilities by the international electoral body.


It is hoped that the ALGON National President will bring along his vast leadership experience, character and capacity to bear for impactful contributions towards positive developments in the service of its regional interest in the Commonwealth Local Government Conference.


The CLGC2023 is a key event in the international local government calendar that is held every two years.

The Rwanda event was hosted by the Government of Rwanda through the Ministry of Local Government (MINALOC) in collaboration with the Rwanda Association of Local Government Authorities (RALGA) and has been described as eventful.

The CLCG2023 theme “Building local resilience across the Commonwealth” focuses on strategies for building local resilience and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

It seeks to explore resilience of all types which include but are not limited to a strong focus on fiscal resilience and supporting local government in delivering sustainable development goals and a better quality of life for all citizens.


The conference coincides with the 20th anniversary of RALGA whose Chairperson is Mrs. Jeanette Nyiramasengesho, Alabi's counterpart in ALGON who in her address expressed the importance of using the platform to give voice to local governments throughout the Commonwealth which was why the event brought stakeholders together to share ideas and best practices and to determine their priorities and future direction.


In attendance were members drawn from the Commonwealth countries of Africa led by the Board Chairperson of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), Reverend Mpho Moruakgomo.

The CLCG2023 meeting also brought together other range of local government players from across government and other sectors: including mayors, ministers, senior officials from local and central government, the private sector, development partners, civil society, academics, research and professionals who were all in attendance.
