Politics / May Day: ALGON National President Hon Aminu Mu'azu Maifata Congratulates Workers by ToriTori247: 8:21am On May 02
The national President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon Aminu Mu'azu Maifata, has sent in his goodwill message to the local government workers.

The ALGON leader said, "On behalf of the National Executive Council of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria ALGON, Board of Trustees, management and the entire staff as well as my family, I wish to convey to our local government workers and other Nigerian worker my greatest felicitation on this International Labour Day. As a strong mark of honour to human capital towards institutional development, commemorating the event offers a great opportunity and love of workers uniqueness, dexterity, patriotism, as well as commitment to duty despite fractured leadership and dysfunction s in some LGAs.

“Let me thank the 36 states ALGON Chairmen and their FCT Counterpart for their steadfastness not minding some sour points in their line of duties due to some Governors undue influence.

“ALGON National will continue to promote good governance, respect the state and federal as well as build synergy with multi-sectoral institutions in strengthening local governments.

“We appreciate for records, some state Governors that are running democratically elected officials where both service delivery and welfare of workers are prioritized. This May day offers a deep introspection on way forward for better.

“We appeal to others to join and respect section 7 sub (1) of the 1999 constitution as amended to keep and protect the only government that people are closer to.

“ALGON will work collaboratively to ensure that the elected officers deliver on their mandate and are accountable to their constituents through our association internal oversight and competitive approach to deliver service to the people.

“On wage issue, though it is a constitutional matter, ALGON is not resting in advocating that a living wage for better working condition is be meted to the workers across the Area Councils and LGAs. Good enough, we are enjoying the assurances of Government and the National Assembly in our several consultations, hence our appeal to the State Assembly to do the needful.

“On our monthly Allocation, we are not happy with the sharing formula of 45.17 percent for the federal government, 29.79 percent for state governments and 21.04 percent for the local governments because our responsibility at the grassroots are humongous, the 4th schedule to the1999 constitution provides the impetus and need for upscaling the councils revenue to address all concerns and it's huge functions.

“ALGON appreciates the patriotism, hard work, resilience, and dedication to duty of the rural workers and pray for them all to keep fate with the present administration under Bola Ahmed Tinubu to see if we could enjoy similar cooperation he gave to LGAs when he was a Governor 20 years ago.”

Hon Maifata made a passionate appeal to the workers to remain steadfast in the face of the present economic challenges, as they mark the 2024 Workers’ Day.

"ALGON is on course to canvass for the promotion of constitutional needs of people and thier basic needs all through the states given our ideological understanding that a functional system of government and the nexus of service delivery are both inseparable and intertwined”, he said.

He call for caring for rural defenseless workers whose future have been facing existential challenges due to poor leadership at the local governments where all style of names have been given to Chairmen, transition, caretaker, and so on as these workers risks care because they are treated with the disrespect. intermittent payment of salaries and denial of other entitlements of workers.

He further stated that the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), and Trade Union Congress (TUC) alongside the National Union of Local Government Employees should close more ranks with ALGON to support in the on going sensitization and advocacy for strengthening the local government system through the constitution amendment.

The ALGON National President also noted that the workers workers in the local government councils are the least cared for due to non elected officers leaving the essential business administration in the hands of political cronies and families there by inhibiting the desired workforce and contribution to the growth of the state’s Gross Domestic Products alongside its internally generate revenue profile.

Hon Maifata expressed his hope that the occasion, though popular in the media space, has little to give or mean to the rural workers whose salaries, wage or income does not provide those security and economic safety nets as such will play vital role towards the rapid development.

He observed that while the workers celebration connects with the International Labour Movement as celebrated every May 1, it has become imperative for the people and government to appreciate and place more value on workers of the councils to give them sense of belonging.

He call for implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme to be cascaded down to Local Governments all over the country. To achieve this he said require the support and synergy with the organized labour and the association.

The ALGON National President had in his speech remarked that as pivotal as councils are to grassroots development, it remains a priority of every state government to support it's development initiative that connects to it's primary needs like the provision of primary health care needs, education, agriculture, job creation, aggregation of programmes and projects that directly affect the well being of the local population.

He is equally of the view that much as technical support is critical to grassroots development, the repositioning of industry clusters like agriculture sector to add to monthly pay will be a survival strategy of most to the rural dwellers and civil servants which he lamented that unfortunately, insecurity has distanced them from farms while dysfunctional local government system has led to neglect in the provision of infrastructures. These according to him were red flags that needs to be addressed.

Health / Obukpa, UNN Host Community, Raises Alarm Over Looming Epidemic by ToriTori247: 9:37am On Mar 02
Residents of Obukpa Community in university town of Nsukka in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, have raised the alarm over what they described as impending epidemic.

The residents, who spoke on Friday, hinged their fears on a leaking sewage at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

Indigenes of the community, Mr Chisom Ugwu and Chief Christian Odume told newsmen that a burst sewage had spread its content right into the community, causing discomfort and threatening the health of the people of the area.

Recall the the community had dragged the university to court over ecological concerns, bordering on alleged environmental degradation due to ongoing construction of multimillion hostels that allegedly re-channeled flood water into Obukpa community.

The case is before an Enugu State High Court in suit No: N/86/2020, which was filed by Hon Nnaemeka Aleke on behalf of the community, seeking to restrain the university and Viagem Property and Investment Limited from further development of the 11,900-room hostel over the alleged environment degradation in Obukpa Community.

The university's host community, through its counsel, claimed that construction of the hostel by UNN created erosion that destroyed lands, roads, houses and other properties of Ajuona Obukpa people. It added that it also became a source of mosquito infestation that made malaria a common illness in the community.

“The plaintiff claims that the roads leading into and out of Ajuona Obukpa Community are devastated. They claimed that they have suffered unquantifiable damage to their properties generally and that the environment was gradually becoming uninhabitable due to construction activities of the first defendant, which is becoming worse”, the counsel said.

The community also sought an order of the court directing the first and second defendants to stop the building of the hostel until they control the erosion devastating lives and properties in Ajuona Obukpa Autonomous Community.

Also sought is an interlocutory injunction restraining the defendants, particularly the second defendant, from the construction of the hostel in the premises of the first defendant or any other construction work in the university pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

The parties have all presented their cases, with the matter now adjourned for written address of counsels.

It was equally learnt that a few days ago, the judge handling the case, other officials and representatives of both parties in the suit, were at the location to have an on the spot assessment of the claims.

However, indigenes of Obukpa community told newsmen that the situation had worsened with the burst sewage, which they said was pushing its contents into their community.

“The entire community is in a mess; faeces has been released into our community from that burst sewage.

“It is so bad and we are urging urgent action before it throws our community into avoidable health hazards.

“If you come to our community now, you will find it difficult to breathe,” Ugwu and Odume told the media.

Crime / Enugu Court Sentences Man To Death By Hanging Over Murder Of Own Son by ToriTori247: 8:11am On Feb 15
The Enugu State High Court sitting in Enugu, the state capital, has found a man, Okolie Chigozie Michael, 32, guilty of unlawfully killing his son. He committed the offence when he was 28 year-old in 2020.

Delivering her judgement on the matter on Wednesday, Hon. Justice C. C. Ani found the accused guilty of murder and sentenced him to death by hanging.

The court found him guilty after it was proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused, Okolie Chigozie Michael, on April 14, 2020 at Emene in Enugu, took his son, Igwilo Chimereucheya, to the bush and strangled him.

Regrettably, when the child didn't die, the convict hit him on chest, which resulted to the child passing out hot feaces and urine before giving up the ghost.

The convict was accused of using his fingers to scratch and inflicted bodily injury on his son, making it appear as if the child was involved in a fight, after which the convict took him home, cleaned him up and laid him on the bed, leaving him as though he was asleep and attempted to escape.

The mother of the 1 year and seven months old child raised the alarm and attracted neighbours when she noticed that the child was dead.

In itself judgment, the court agreed with the Prosecuting Counsel, Barr. Nkechi Ogbodo of the Department of Public Prosecution, Ministry of Justice, Enugu, who had during the trial tendered evidence before the court, including autopsy report to proved that indeed the deceased was strangled to death.

It was gathered that the convict is a serial abuser, who constantly beats up the mother of his son.

It was further gathered that he was earlier made to sign an undertaken at the police station at the insistence of their landlord and his wife's employer, due to constant threats that he will kill both the mother and her child.

Consequently, he was cautioned at different police stations to desist from his violent acts before the incident that led to the death of his son, Chimereucheya, occurred.

It was reported that on certain occasion, the convict inflicted injury on the deceased's penis because he urinated on the bed.

Justice Ani noted in her ruling that it was evident from the confession by the culprit on how he murdered the deceased showed that it was voluntary and premeditated act, not under duress.

Therefore, the court found him guilty of murder and sentenced him to death accordingly, haven committed the committed the offence punishable under Section 274(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004.

While Okolie Chigozie Michael, the defendant in the case, is a native of Ibeme Obingwa in Abia State, the mother of the child hails from Imezie Owa in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Politics / CNPP To Tinubu: Why You Should Rethink Nigeria's Romance With IMF, Others by ToriTori247: 9:06pm On Feb 13
Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu “to struggle through the hard path by rethinking Nigeria's relationship with the Bretton Woods Institutions, realistically assessing the performance of his appointees and sacking those constituting a cog in the wheel of the progress of his administration through their clear unproductivity and sabotage.”

The CNPP, a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, while reacting to the call by the called by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the federal government to completely phase out petrol and electricity subsidies in the country in its 'Post Financing Assessment (PFA)' report.

The umbrella association of all registered political parties and political associations in Nigeria noted in the statement that “restoring macroeconomic stability in Nigeria should come from homegrown policies and programmes as IMF solutions have never aided Nigeria's economic recovery, rather our economic woes worsened every time Bretton Woods Institutions' advisories were implemented in Africa.

“While removal of subsidy, due to the attendant corruption that bedevilled its payment was desirable, it was akin to shooting down Nigeria's economy by implementing subsidy removal policy without functional refineries for local production of petroleum products.

“The call by IMF for the complete phase out of petrol and electricity subsidies in the country is a suggestion to the Bola Tinubu administration to inflict more hardship on already suffering masses of Nigeria.

“Has the IMF ever advised the USA and European countries on removal of subsidies on cotton, which has been detrimental to one of Africa’s leading cotton exporters, Burkina Faso?

“It's on record that in Europe in 2019, €38.2 billion was spent on direct payments to farmers and €13.8 billion on rural development, with a further €2.4 billion supported the market for agricultural products. Has the IMF ever spoken about energy and agricultural subsidies in the USA and the European countries?

“We therefore urge President Bola Tinubu to focus on homegrown solutions to Nigeria's economic crisis and jettison policy advisories from the IMF and other Bretton Woods Institutions.

“We equally call on Mr. President to sack all unproductive appointees and identify those who are engaging in economic sabotage, especially as regards revenue generation in the oil and gas sector, and relieve them of their duties to increase foreign exchange earnings”, the CNPP counselled.
Crime / Why Smear Campaign Against Naval Chief Handiwork Of Frustrated Oil Thieves by ToriTori247: 9:51pm On Jan 28
Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) and over 38 Civil Society Organisations, under the umbrella of the Coalition Of National Civil Society Organisations (CNCSOs) have described online reports linking Nigeria's Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to alleged multibillion naira oil bunkering and contract-splitting fraud as “the handiwork of a frustrated syndicate involved in stealing of Nigeria's crude oil.”

Some online media platforms had reposted an allegation that a preliminary investigations estimated that the Naval Chief had accepted over $170 million in bribes over the past six months alone.

However, in a statement jointly signed by the CNPP's Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema and the National Secretary of the CNCSOs, Alhaji Ali Abacha, they described the allegations as “dead on arrival as efforts to truncate the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration's renewed quest to mitigate the stealing of the country's crude oil is the target of the disgruntled ring's attack on Ogalla.

“We strongly believe that it was based on Ogalla's track records of service that prompted Mr. President to trust him with the appointment in the first place and he has in the last six months shown that President Tinubu did not make any mistake in his choice of the Naval Chief.

“It has since become evident that since the Chief of Naval Staff launched the Nigerian Navy's “Operation Delta Sanity”, which has been embraced by the government and leaders of the Niger Delta states, the oil thieves are increasingly uncomfortable.

“The new anti-crude oil theft tactical operation initiated by the Chief of Naval Staff and his effort to provide necessary equipment for personnel have become a serious nightmare for the enemies of the country's economy due to its holistic and robust roadmap against crude oil theft and other forms of illegalities on Nigeria's territorial waters.

“The Nigerian Navy in its reaction to the syndicated allegations expressly disclosed that all the vessels alleged to have been released, which was the basis of the bogus $170 million allegedly received by the Naval Chief in bribes, are still in the custody and undergoing investigation.

“The Navy said unambiguously and we quote: “Indeed, all arrested vessels mentioned in the publication that were involved in crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering are being investigated and none of such vessels has been released as alleged.”

“So, if the basis for the allegation, which is the arrested vessels, are still in custody, we call on the Chief of Naval Staff to disregard the detractors and continue with his renewed efforts against oil thieves in support of President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Nigerians are currently suffering from severe economic hardship and we urge President Tinubu and the Naval Chief not to be deterred by the smear tactic and discrediting actions of the oil stealing syndicate who are increasing unable to continue in their nefarious trade.

“It is on record that the CNPP and CNCSOs have been in the forefront of the agitation for an end to the brazen thieving of Nigeria's crude oil in the last eight years and we will back every genuine efforts aimed mitigating the age-long economic sabotage for the benefit of the suffering masses.

“On the contract splitting allegation, the Navy has issued a clear response and there is no need over-flogging a dead horse as we call on President Tinubu not to succumb to the antics of the already drowning oil thieves who would naturally fight back by all means possible, including the ongoing syndicated blackmail”, the CNPP and the CSOs said.

The Save Enugu Group maintained that “the man in question, who fronts as a businessman in Enugu State and Managing Director of Hymac Real Ltd, a real estate development company laid claim to the NSE land and property, including other adjoining plots within the neighbourhood.

“We have it on good authority that Mr. Ayogu prides himself as an associate of the Chief of Army Staff, General Abiodun Lagbaja, thereby portraying the military authorities in a bad light among the residents of the state.

“So far, there are allegations that Mr. Ayogu, who has turned into a flourishing land grabber in the state, dispossessing some communities of their properties.

“Our preliminary findings indicate that Mr. Oke Hyacinth Ayogu is a Nigerian army deserter and have reportedly claimed the military rank of captain. His last known place of service is the 65 Brigade Sokoto.

“He has been accused of equally claiming to be a military spy on a mission to identify members of the Independent People Of Biafra (IPOB) in the state.

“He has been fingered in several land grabbing cases involving properties belonging to high profile individuals, and organisations, and widows no matter the validity of the land documents.

“In this Save-Our-Souls (SOS) alert to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian armed forces, we plead with Mr. President to order investigation into the circumstances that led to the deployment of soldiers as excorts to a suspected army deserter.

“We equally call on Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who is the Chief Security Officer of Enugu State to take note and curb the excesses of Mr. Ayogu to avert an imminent breakdown of law and order in some communities as a result of his activities”, the statement concluded.

Politics / Kano Guber: Coalition Of Yoruba Groups Task S'court On Integrity Of Judiciary by ToriTori247: 3:11pm On Nov 28, 2023
A Coalition of SouthWest Groups, under its umbrella body, the Coalition Of The Yoruba Youth Network (YYN), comprising the South West Blossom Brigade (SBB), the Odua Youth Frontiers (OYF), the Yoruba Youth Empowerment Forum (YYEF), the Voice Of Yoruba Youths (VOYY), the Odua Progressive People Assembly (OPPA) and no fewer than fourteen other youth organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) have reacted to the Court of Appeal judgment on the Kano State governorship election petition between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as it relates to the integrity of the Nigerian Justice System.

The Coalition urged the Supreme Court of Nigeria, as the highest judicial authority in the country, to exercise its responsibility to safeguard the integrity of the judiciary by thoroughly reviewing the case.

They noted that “by conducting a thorough review of these rulings, the Supreme Court can demonstrate its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all.”

At a world press conference in Lagos, South West of Nigeria, the groups insisted that it will be detrimental to the principle of justice and democracy in the country.

Speaking on behalf of the Coalition of Southwest Groups, Comrade Razak Olukayode, argued that a similar situation in Osun State, as presented itself in the Kano State governorship election petition, did not lead to the nullification of the election of Senator Ademola Adeleke.

He said, “This coalition of Southwest groups is deeply concerned about recent controversial Appeal Court rulings on the Kano State Governorship election, which has raised serious questions about the integrity of Nigeria's justice system.

“We wish to caution against compromising the nation's judiciary and emphasize the importance of maintaining its independence, transparency, and integrity.

“In the case of the Kano Governorship election, the ruling of the Court of Appeal has raised doubts about the fairness of the nation's judiciary and the legitimacy of the electoral process.

“This ruling severely jeopardizes the expected role of the judiciary as the cornerstone of democracy and justice in any nation.

“We observe that the Court of Appeal decision in the Kano case of Abba vs APC has deviated from established principles of electoral jurisprudence regarding the issue of nomination and sponsorship, which falls under the exclusive purview of pre-election matters.

“Various judicial authorities, including the recent Peter Obi v INEC case, have emphasized that only the Federal High Court has jurisdiction to adjudicate over nomination issues”, the Coalition said.

According to the groups, the “Tribunal in the Abba vs APC case correctly stated that nomination is a pre-election matter but could not make a pronouncement on the issue due to lack of jurisdiction.

“We highlight the injustice of upholding the Tribunal's decision to nullify 166,000 votes from the tally of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and sacking the incumbent governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

“The Appeal Court's decision to uphold the nullification of such a significant number of votes without proper justification undermines the democratic fabric of the nation and raises questions about the impartiality of the judiciary.

“The decision to nullify 166,000 votes from the NNPP's tally in the Kano governorship election raises questions about the consistency and fairness of their judgments. In this case, the court cited irregularities and non-compliance with electoral laws as the basis for nullifying the votes”, the Coalition added

They further argued, however, that “it is essential to note that similar irregularities were present in the case of Governor Adeleke, where the Court of Appeal ruled against nullifying votes.

“By nullifying votes that were deemed to be irregular in Kano, the court fails to address the contradiction in its ruling in the case of Governor Adeleke, where similar irregularities were present but not nullified.

“This inconsistency in applying legal principles undermines the principle of equal treatment before the law and raises doubts about the court's impartiality.

“Furthermore, the controversies surrounding the discrepancies between the judgment read out by the court and the content of the Certified True Copy of the Judgment in the Kano governorship election raise serious doubts about the transparency and integrity of the judicial process.

“These discrepancies have led to confusion and speculation among the public, further eroding public trust in the judiciary.

“While it is necessary to ensure that political parties adhere to electoral guidelines, the decision to upturn the entire election in Kano raises questions about the legitimacy of the democratic process.

“Arguably, this ruling undermines the people's right to choose their leaders and places excessive power in the hands of the judiciary. This controversy highlights the need for a balance between upholding the rule of law and respecting the democratic will of the people”, they further stated.

The contradictions in the Court of Appeal's decisions, they said, “highlight the need for a comprehensive review of the electoral laws and the judicial process. It sets a dangerous precedent for future elections.

“Nullifying the Kano votes and allowing those of Osun without clear and consistent legal reasoning can lead to a loss of public trust in the judiciary and the electoral process.

“Moreover, it opens the door for potential abuse of power, as political actors may exploit these inconsistencies to manipulate election outcomes.

“The court's role should be to provide clarity and consistency in interpreting and applying the law, rather than contributing to confusion and uncertainty.

“The controversies surrounding these rulings also raise questions about the accuracy and reliability of the court's decision-making process, suggesting a lack of attention to detail and procedural irregularities. This further erodes public confidence in the judiciary.

“We emphasize the need for a review of these rulings to ensure that justice is served and the rule of law is upheld. By reevaluating the evidence and legal arguments presented, the Supreme Court can rectify any potential errors made by the Court of Appeal, thereby restoring public faith in the judiciary.

“The review of the Court of Appeal rulings on the Kano governorship elections is not only necessary to rectify potential errors but also to reclaim the threatened integrity of the judiciary.

“The credibility and impartiality of the judiciary are fundamental to the functioning of a democratic society, as they ensure that citizens have confidence in the legal system.

“The Supreme Court, as the highest judicial authority in Nigeria, has the responsibility to safeguard the integrity of the judiciary. By conducting a thorough review of these rulings, the Supreme Court can demonstrate its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all.

“By rectifying any potential errors and ensuring that justice is served, the Supreme Court can reaffirm its commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining the principles of justice and fairness within the Nigerian democratic system.
The judiciary should exercise caution and impartiality when making decisions that impact the democratic process.

“In conclusion, we urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act as a true statesman and renowned democrat by upholding the principles of separation of powers, particularly the independence of the judiciary.

“By allowing the free, fair, and uninterrupted application of justice, President Tinubu will demonstrate his commitment to the rule of law and ensure the continued strength of Nigeria's democratic institutions. It is crucial for him to avoid any interference with the course of justice, keeping in mind that he himself has benefited from fair judicial adjudication.

“Interference with the course of justice poses a significant threat to the principles of separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary. Such interference can lead to a compromised justice system, eroding public trust and undermining the rule of law.

“President Tinubu must be cautious not to allow his name to be smeared in the dirty game of interference, as it would not only tarnish his reputation but also weaken the democratic fabric of the nation”, the Yoruba groups argued.

Politics / Why Nigeria Judiciary Must Be Cautious — Northern Elders Say, Lament Trends by ToriTori247: 3:41pm On Nov 24, 2023
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has said that it is deeply worried about the current state of affairs within the Nigerian judiciary, describing the current trends of verdict emanating from the elections petition courts as a significant threat to the country's democracy.

In a press statement, NEF's Convener, Professor Ango Abdullahi, stressed the need for the judiciary to be cautious in its actions to prevent the erosion of its integrity, public trust, and confidence.

Professor Abdullahi expressed dismay at the controversies surrounding several recent judicial decisions, particularly those concerning elections. Such occurrences, he noted, are disheartening and pose a significant threat to the future of democracy in Nigeria.

"The potential consequences of these actions may ultimately validate the concerns raised by Retired Supreme Court Judge Dajjito Mohammed in his valedictory remarks about corruption and undue compromises within the judiciary.

“The Northern Elders Forum recognizes the importance of a fair and impartial judiciary in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding democratic principles.

“The judiciary plays a critical role in ensuring justice, protecting citizens' rights, and preserving the credibility of the electoral process. Any actions that compromise these principles undermine the very foundation of any democratic nation," Professor Abdullahi said.

NEF, therefore, called on all levels of the judiciary to uphold the highest ethical standards and maintain impartiality in their decision-making processes.

It urged judges to exhibit unwavering integrity and resilience when adjudicating cases, especially those pertaining to elections.

Professor Abdullahi expressed concerns about “the current trend that poses a threat of imminent judicial collapse has numerous Implications for constitutional democracy.”

The trend, he said, poses a significant threat to the judiciary, the institution responsible for upholding constitutional democracy.

He argues that if this trend continues, the nation risks descending into total anarchy.

"The judiciary plays a crucial role in sustaining constitutional democracy by ensuring the rule of law, protecting individual rights, and providing checks and balances on the other branches of government.

However, if the judiciary fails to fulfill its responsibilities, it can have severe implications for the stability and functioning of a democratic society.

"The current trend may encourage politicians to view politics as a do-or-die affair. When the judiciary fails to effectively adjudicate disputes and hold politicians accountable for their actions, it creates an environment where politicians feel emboldened to engage in corrupt practices, abuse their power, and disregard the principles of democracy. This erosion of trust in the judiciary can lead to a breakdown of democratic norms and values, ultimately undermining the legitimacy of the political system.

"Furthermore, a collapsing judiciary jeopardizes the safeguarding of constitutionalism, which is the cornerstone of any democratic society. The judiciary acts as the guardian of the constitution, ensuring that laws and policies adhere to the principles enshrined within it. Without a functioning judiciary, there is a risk of constitutional violations going unchecked, leading to the erosion of citizens' rights and freedoms. This can result in a loss of public confidence in the democratic process, as citizens may feel that their voices are not being heard or that their rights are being trampled upon," he said.

Professor Abdullahi therefore warned that only through a robust and functioning judiciary can Nigeria truly safeguard its democratic values and prevent the descent into anarchy.

"The fairness and transparency of the judicial system are vital for fostering public trust, confidence, and belief in the democratic process," Abdullahi said.

The Northern Elders Forum also urges relevant authorities to conduct thorough investigations into any allegations of corruption and undue compromise within the judiciary. Any substantiated claims should be swiftly prosecuted, serving as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to taint the judiciary's reputation.

"NEF believes that the judiciary should be an unbiased and independent arm of government, which is essential to the success of democracy and it should not be seen as compromising the integrity of its decisions particularly at a time when the nation is grappling with a range of challenges.

"NEF therefore calls on the judiciary to consider the consequences of its actions and decisions, and strive to uphold the rule of law in all its activities to justify the confidence reposed on it by Nigerians.

The NEF then called on the “public to remain vigilant in as to the direction the nation's judiciary is headed and not to hesitate to expose any perceived misconduct on the part of the judiciary.

"It is our firm belief that a strong and incorruptible judiciary is crucial for the development and progress of our great nation. The Northern Elders Forum, alongside other concerned stakeholders, will continue to closely monitor the conduct of the judiciary and advocate for its ethical revitalization to safeguard the interests of all Nigerians," the Northern Elders said.

Business / Fuel Crisis: Demand By Reps Members, Csos To Sack Kyari Not Justified — Hassan by ToriTori247: 1:19pm On Oct 29, 2023
...Says Our Leaders Cannot Be Slandered From Duties By Cheap Blackmails, False Allegations

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Skymark Energy and Power, Muhammad Saleh Hassan, has upbraided the call by 52 House of Representatives members and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to sack the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPCL), Malam Mele Kyari.

In a statement in Abuja at the weekend, Hassan described the call which was allegedly made during a world press conference on Tuesday, as a cheap blackmail to rubbish the apparent good jobs that Kyari has been doing since he came to the helm of affairs of the company.

He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discard the call and remain focused on leveraging the potentials of technocrats like Kyari in running his government.

"First of all, let me congratulate Tinubu on his victory at the Supreme Court that has validated his election as the president of this country. I hereby call on him to discard the call to sack Kyari, but remain focused on maximising his potentials to manage the nation's oil giant, the NNPCL," Hassan said.

He added that the allegation that Kyari is responsible for fuel scarcity and hike in fuel price did not hold water because Kyari is not in the position to reduce fuel price and stabilise it at an affordable price.

"This is market. NNPCL is a limited company. It buys and sells fuel at profit just like any other company. So, Mele Kyari/NNPCL is competing with AA Rano and AA Rano is competing with NNPCL. NNPCL is also competing with Skymark Energy and Power and vice versa. All oil companies import fuel and sell at profit. So, fuel price is a competition among NNPCL and all oil marketers," Hassan said.

He added: "The current market realities have nothing to do with government or any individual. So, the call to sack Kyari is not justified because the market realities in the oil sector are a global trend."
The Skymark boss urged the Reps members and CSOs collaborators to first of all do their home work very well and understand the realities instead of outright call for Kyari's sack.

"Kyari is not the cause of the current hardship in the country. Hardship has been a current decimal in this country. Kyari does not have control over prices of commodities or inflation. He is not the president. He is only the head of a limited company. Even, President Tinubu is not to blame because he met the economy in a shambles and trying his best to fix it," Hassan stressed.

While still absolving Kyari of blame, Hassan noted: "Kyari is just the GCEO of NNPCL which is a limited liability company. He didn't introduce fuel subsidy. He met it after it was put in place by a previous governments and he wasn't the one that removed it. Everything about subsidy has been by government's decision.

"Even, President Tinubu is not to blame for removing the subsidy because the budget he inherited had no provision for it, neither is NNPCL, Kyari nor government is to blame for the removal of the subsidy. Rather, the populace should support them to be able to actualise the dividends and benefits of the subsidy removal."

Hassan pointed out that the current fuel price in the country which is in the neighbourhood of N680/N700 per litre is still the cheapest, compared to the prices in Saudi Arabia, UK, US , including oil -producing countries.

"So, calling for the sack of Mele Kyari is a disservice to the country and a huge discouragement to other creditable performers who are supposed to be encouraged to do more or improve in any area they need to improve upon," he noted.

"It is crystal-clear that Kyari's track record right from when he was GMD of NNPCL till now that he is the GCEO indicates that he has been doing creditably well. He brought transformation to the company which gave it the current status as a liability (profit-oriented) company.

Hassan said that Kyari's achievements so far spoke volume.
"As part of Kyari’s efforts to make Nigeria a net exporter of petroleum products, NNPC signed the $1.5bn Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) Contract Agreement with Tecnimont SpA on April 6, 2021, for total rehabilitation of Port Harcourt Refinery.

"I have never seen any NNPC GMD that went all the way to the Niger Delta creeks to monitor oil activities or held meetings with community leaders in the creeks to guide against oil theft. But Kyari did that several times till he brought oil theft to a considerable control. He has held meetings several times with youths in the creeks to discourage them from pipeline vandalism.

"Before then, oil theft had hit an unprecedented 101.05 million barrels figure in 2016. In his efforts to unravel oil theft, when Kyari came in as GMD in 2019, he instituted a multi-security control room handled by the NNPCL. All the assets of the company were connected to the command-and-control centre. The centre was responsible for monitoring, locating, and reporting nefarious activities to various security agencies for intervention. The effort led to oil production increase to 1.6 million barrels per day by the end of 2022," Hassan stressed.

"With its status as a limited company, Kyari as GCEO is like a normal CEO of a company and does not enjoy anything special from government. He is just the head of a public organisation just like me as the CEO of my company Skymark Energy and Power.

While lauding Kyari's acceptability and creditable stewardship, Hassan said: "There was a loud ovation in the industry when he was appointed GMD in August 2019, following his track record of transparency and experience. Stakeholders lauded his appointment, describing him as a round peg in a round hole.

"Four years after, Kyari did not disappoint. No scandal has been linked to him since he came on board, and he has continued to demonstrate leadership and tenacity despite the challenges creeping the nation's oil industry.

"I call on not only President Tinubu but also Nigerians to disregard the call to sack Kyari because no new person has the magic wand to solve the problem in the oil sector, except government's and Kyari's ongoing efforts to transform it by refurbishing the three refineries in Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Warri."

Hassan who also condemned the call to sack Kyari noted: "The House of Reps has House Committees on oil and gas for the downstream and upstream sectors in the NNPCL which should follow the normal process of investigating the problem, rather than 52 Reps members to collaborate with CSOs to call for the sack of the head of a the nation's oil giant whose appointment followed a due process."

"The House Committee on Ethics is supposed to address the anomaly to ensure that the right thing is done and also guide them very well so that the House is not brought into disrepute," the Skymark Energy and Power boss said.

"My advice to the legislators is to concentrate on their legislative duties and not to distract the president with false allegations against NNPCL/Kyari or any head of government agency or executive. It’s time for us to support the president’s renewed hope agenda to rebuild our country., he stressed.

He added: "Nigeria is facing a great trial and economic challenges. We cannot be slandered from our duties by cheap blackmails and false allegations against our leaders at a time when we are working to restore our people’s confidence and trust in government."

"President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a great thinker and believes in working with a think tank to run his government. He's has been assembling technocrats. Kyari has been a think tank phenomenon in the oil sector. So, nobody can just wake up suddenly and expects a president who needs technocrats to run his government to sack a technocrat like Kyari," Hassan noted.

"During the conference, the Reps members and CSOs called for an comprehensive investigation into the root causes of the recurrent fuel problems. Why then did they not call for the investigation first of all before going ahead to call for Kyari's outright sack? That is putting the cart before a horse," Hassan noted.

He, however called on Kyari to remain focused and steadfast in his assignments.
"He should remain unruffled because the criticisms and allegations against him are cheap blackmail. He should keep doing his best until the best for this country is achieved in the oil sector through his midas touch." Hassan said.

He added: "Kyari deserves continuity in office, not only because of the avalanche of his achievements but also for the purpose of consistency and the fact that he still has much more on his sleeve to deliver and achieve more results. Bringing a new GCEO to the NNPCL other than Kyari who has adequate industry experience can only bring a setback to the nation's oil industry. It takes an expert and experienced brain like Kyari who has all the skills to salvage the industry and galvanise the desired result that we are all yearning for.

Politics / Declare Ifeanyi Ubah's Seat Vacant Over Defection In 14day — CNPP To Akpabio by ToriTori247: 5:50pm On Oct 20, 2023
...Wants EFCC To Reopen Corruption Cases Against Ubah, Capital Oil

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has reacted to the reported defection of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in what it described as “a most likely plea-bargain with the APC amid his many unresolved corruption allegations”, urging the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio to declare Ubah's seat vacant in 14 days over defection.

In a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, James Ezema, the CNPP vowed to rally allied civil society organisations in the country after 14 days to compel the President of the Senate to give effect to the provisions of section 68 (1) (g) of the 1999 constitution (as amended) by seat of the Senator representing the people of Anambra South Senatorial District vacant.

The CNPP also vowed to take all possible steps to get the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to revisit many unresolved corruption allegations against the Capital Oil Boss at the expiration of its 14-day ultimatum, saying that “APC’s ideology of forgiving the sins of defectors into the party is detrimental to the deepening of democracy and a hindrance to the rule of law in Nigeria.”

According to the CNPP, “it is not surprising that Senator Ifeanyi Ubah's defection and the withdrawal of the Federal High Court case of alleged N135bn indebtedness brought against him and his company, Capital Oil and Gas limited, by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) happened almost within 48 hours.

“The charge was struck out by Justice Nicholas Oweibo following an oral application by counsel for AMCON, Oluwaseun Onabowu, seeking the withdrawal of the suit.

“Therefore, Nigerians have every reason to believe that the APC government cleared Senator Ubah and Capital Oil to pave way for his immediate defection to the ruling party.

“It was obvious, even to the blind, that Ifeanyi Ubah's claim of being impressed by President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda was a false reason.

“Senator Ubah had also claimed that the APC’s commitment to good governance, economic development and social progress were part of the reasons for his defection whereas the provisions of section 68 of the constitution are very clear on cross-carpeting by elected National Assembly members.

“Every informed observer can quickly deduce that it was a type of “defect and have your sins forgiven arrangement”, in attempt to rob the people of Anambra South Senatorial District who voted YPP of their constitutional rights to choose a political party to vote into any position”, the CNPP said.

Vowing to rally allied civil society organisations after 14 days to compel the EFCC to reopen cases against the Senator, despite whatever perceived defection arrangements between Senator Ubah and APC’s hierarchy, the CNPP said “no stone will be left unturned until the N43 billion subsidy fraud by the EFCC is reopened.

“It is shocking that despite getting the nod of the Court of Appeal to continue its investigation and possibly prosecute Capital Oil and Gas Limited and its Managing Director, now Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, for their alleged complicity in the N43.29bn fraud perpetrated through the petroleum subsidy scheme, the EFCC went into coma over the matter since May 12, 2017.

“Recall that in the unanimous judgment of a three-man bench of the Court of Appeal headed by Justice Tinuade Akomolafe-Wilson the EFCC was cleared to probe and bring the Senator to a trial court.

“The lead judgment was prepared by Justice Emmanuel Agim, and was consented to by Justice Akomolafe-Wilson and Justice Tani Yusufu.

“This is just one among other allegations of corruption against Senator Ifeanyi Ubah or his company.

“We then call on the EFCC to immediately explain to Nigerians why it is yet to charge Senator Ifeanyi Ubah and his company to court since 2017, leaving Nigerians to continue to suffer while persons accused of looting public funds continue to remain in office rather than prison”, the said.
Politics / African Students Set To Hold #liftzimbabwesanctions Rally In Harare by ToriTori247: 10:51am On Oct 20, 2023
As part of its effort to further press for the immediate review and lifting of over 20-year-old sanctions against the Republic of Zimbabwe, the leadership of the dAll-African Students Union (AASU) has unveiled activities for a planned solidarity visit to Zimbabwe as part of the students’ advocacy for the lifting of sanctions against the country, including a rally in Harare.

AASU President, Osisiogu Osikenyi, disclosed this at a World Press Conference in the union's headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, on Thursday.

He noted that the students, drawn from across Africa, will arrive Harare on Monday.

Standing on their earlier reasons for the advocacy for the review of the sanctions, especially around the four-key reform pillars put in place by the President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa administration, the students reiterated their call for the lifting of the sanctions to enable Zimbabwe to progress at the same pace with other African countries.

Insisting that Zimbabwe may be able to procure arms to protect her territorial integrity as a result of the lingering decades of sanctions, AASU called all youth leaders in the country to join their planned rally in Harare.

The students disclosed that about 50 students and youth leaders from across Africa will be part of the trip ahead of their rally, vigil, and a world press conference, inviting the media and other stakeholders, students and youth leaders in the country, to be part of their planned activities to press for the immediate lifting of the sanctions from October 24 to 26 in Harare.

Career / More Groups Join Call For Return Of N-power Program by ToriTori247: 8:39am On Oct 18, 2023
The North-Central Advocacy Coalition (NCAC) has joined the growing calls for the federal government to reinstate the N-Power program which was abruptly halted, saying the suspension of the program comes with multiple negative implications to the country and to the North in particular.

This decision, the Group said, will have a detrimental effect on the beneficiaries, who will now face increased competition in an already overcrowded job market.

"The northern region, in particular, will be severely affected as the program has played a significant role in reducing unemployment and poverty levels in this area," Ndagi Baba Toro, President General of the association said at a press conference in Minna, Niger State.

According to the NCAC, the decision to suspend the N-Power program was hasty and unpopular.

"Alternative solutions should have been considered, such as phasing out the program gradually, rather than abruptly impacting the beneficiaries without any clear transition plan.

"This lack of foresight and consideration for the welfare of the affected beneficiaries has resulted in widespread criticism from both public officials and citizens," they said.

They observed that the N-Power program has been instrumental in providing job opportunities and skills training to millions of young people, empowering them to become self-reliant and contribute to economic growth. Suspending this program will reverse the progress made so far, leading to higher unemployment rates and increased poverty levels. This not only affects individuals but also their families, posing a risk to overall socio-economic stability in the region.

Furthermore, they added that, the suspension of the N-Power program will worsen the security challenges already prevalent in Northern Nigeria.

They insisted that the program not only provided employment opportunities but also served as a social inclusion and empowerment mechanism for young people.

“By abruptly ending this beneficial scheme, there is a risk of creating a pool of unemployed and frustrated youth who may become susceptible to extremist groups or engage in criminal activities. This could further destabilize troubled areas in the north and compromise national security.

"The suspension of the N-Power program will exacerbate security challenges in Northern Nigeria by creating a pool of unemployed and frustrated youth who may be susceptible to recruitment by extremist groups or engage in criminal activities.

"The program has not only provided employment opportunities but has also served as a means of social inclusion and empowerment for the youth. By abruptly ending the program, the government risks further destabilizing the troubled northern region and compromising national security.

"The decision to scrap the N-Power program appears to be hasty, ill-advised, and ill-timed. The government should have considered alternative solutions phasing to minimize the negative impact on beneficiaries. The sudden suspension without any clear alternative or transition plan demonstrates a lack of foresight and consideration for the welfare of the affected individuals," the Group said.

The NCAC said it strongly condemned the decision to suspend the N-Power program and demanded its immediate reinstatement saying, the government must recognize the importance of this program in addressing unemployment and poverty, particularly in the northern region.

"Additionally, the NCAC calls for the removal of Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, from her position for being responsible for this unpopular decision. Accountability is crucial to ensure that such ill-informed decisions are not repeated in the future.

"The suspension of the N-Power program is a cause for great concern, particularly for the northern region of Nigeria. The negative implications on unemployment, poverty, and security cannot be ignored. The NCAC strongly condemns the decision and urges the government to reconsider its action and reinstate the program immediately”, the group said.

Politics / Pan-northern Group Demands Review Of N-power Suspension by ToriTori247: 8:52am On Oct 16, 2023
The ProActive Northern Initiative (PANI) has has condemned the federal government's suspension of the N-Power program or any part of the Social Investment Program and any person directly or remotely connected to the damaging decision.

"We demand that the government immdiately reconsiders its decision and instead invests in expanding the N-Power program to provide opportunities for the youth, fostering positive change, and ultimately contributing to the region's progress," Comrade Isa Aliyu Musa, convener of the Group said in statement read at a press conference in Kaduna on Sunday.

The Group also demanded the immediate sacking of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu and others who might have had roles in the advising the federal government to suspend the N-Power program.

"We emphatically repudiate the vilification of our respected northern leadership for whatever reason or justification.

"In this light, we deem the targeting of our leaders past and present, for vilification, systematic dehumanization, profiling, alienation or any action that will render them object of ridicule, not only immoral and illegal, but also abhorrent to our sensibilities and ordinary decency and therefore unacceptable," Musa said.

The Group said it is especially saddening for the Nigerian government heed to the advice of Minister Edu whom they described as a novice in governance to suspend the N-Power program which has been instrumental in providing employment and skills development opportunities for many young Nigerians, particularly in the north.

"N-Power is a social investment scheme set up by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016 under the supervision the then Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and transfered in 2019 to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management under Sadiya Umar Farouq.

"As Minister, Farouk made several achievements. One of the key achievements of the ministry under her is the successful launch of the National Social Investment Program (NSIP) through which various social intervention programs are implemented.

These programs include the N-Power program, the National Home-Grown School Feeding Program, Conditional Cash Transfer, and the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Program.

"Her tenure also saw significant progress made in other areas. For instance, the ministry worked to improve access to education for children affected by conflict and emergencies through its Safe School Initiative.

"Additionally, the ministry launched a program aimed at addressing malnutrition among children under five years old. The program provided nutrition supplements and education on healthy feeding practices to mothers and caregivers.

"Another notable achievement of the ministry was the prompt intervention in supporting the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the northeast region.

The ministry provided relief materials, food items, shelter, and non-food items to the IDPs. They also deployed humanitarian workers to provide psychosocial support to the affected individuals.
"The Ministry was also able to leverage digital technology towards improving services delivery and ensuring transparency. The NSIP, for example, deployed technology to register and monitor beneficiaries to reduce fraud and improve the accountability of the intervention," Musa recalled.

The Group lamented that suddenly, the federal government announced it will suspend the N-Power programme indefinitely for proper investigation and restructuring.

"In the process, history is being shamefully and blatantly reviewed, rewritten and falsified to suit certain agendas that tend to portray the former Minister and, by extention, the respected Northern leadership in bad light and render them as the culprit and the guilty entity," the Group said.

It clarified that while it acknowledges the need to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in government programs, we believe that the suspension of the N-Power program at this critical time will have adverse effects on the livelihoods of many young Nigerians who have come to rely on the program for their sustenance.

"Empowering the youth through the N-Power program not only equips them with the necessary skills for employment but also instills a sense of purpose and direction. By keeping the youth engaged in productive activities, the program helps to deter them from engaging in criminal activities or becoming susceptible to extremist ideologies.

"The fragile security situation in Northern Nigeria is already a major concern for the government and the international community. The region has been plagued by terrorist attacks, kidnapping, and other forms of violence for years. The N-Power program was seen as a way to address the underlying economic and social factors that contribute to the insecurity in the region.

"The suspension of the N-Power program leaves a void that can potentially be filled by negative influences, further exacerbating the security challenges faced by the region.

"The suspension of the N-Power program in northern Nigeria, coupled with the government's lack of capacity and political will to address the insecurity crisis, poses significant challenges to the region's development and stability. The program's aim to empower the youth and keep them focused and disciplined in pursuing credible goals is crucial in combating the prevailing insecurity.

"The suspension of the N-Power program by the Nigerian government is likely to have a negative impact on the fragile security situation in Northern Nigeria. The N-Power program was a youth empowerment program that aimed to address the high unemployment rate in the country.

"The suspension of the program could therefore result in a further deterioration of the security situation in Northern Nigeria. The youth who were engaged in the program may feel that they have no other options but to join criminal or terrorist groups as a way to earn a living. This could lead to an increase in the number of attacks and other violent incidents in the region.

"The people of Northern Nigeria deserve a better and meaningful life, and it is the duty of the government to ensure that their needs are met.

“It is time for all stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and civil society organizations, to work together towards improving the lives of the people and once and for all get rid of the poverty tag hanging over Northern Nigeria. official breakdown of the beneficiaries in the 19 northern states below," Musa pointed out.

Citing what it called official data, that shows that 847,287 young people from the North have benefited from the N-Power, he lamented that they are now rendered jobless and therefore susceptible to negative influences.

"Instead of suspending the program, the government should focus on expanding its reach and impact. By investing in the N-Power program, the government can provide more opportunities for skill development, job creation, and financial support to a larger number of youth. This expansion would not only contribute to the economic growth of the region but also foster a sense of hope and optimism among the youth, reducing their vulnerability to extremist ideologies.

“Few events had confirmed to the northern elite and people that the region is being being abandoned by this administration at the mercy of a rampaging criminality with policies calculated and designed continuously weaken the North politically and pauperize it economically than the abrupt suspension of this particular program.

"The suspension came at a critical time when hunger is stalking millions of homes, inflation is making life difficult by the day, people are losing jobs, businesses are closing down.

“Infrastructure is decaying, young Nigerians losing hope of being employed, hospitals filled with people who suffer mysterious illnesses, and cannot afford the fees" Musa concluded.

Business / More Trouble For Kyari As Niger Deltans Protest, Demand Sack, NNPCL GCEO's Probe by ToriTori247: 4:40pm On Oct 12, 2023
Niger Delta people in their numbers stormed the streets in a peaceful protest rally calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately sack and probe Engr. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer Of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The protesters yesterday matched through the major Warri\Sapele Road to the Warri zonal office the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Delta State.

The rally was organised by 26 youth and civil society organisations (CSOs) under the umbrella of the Niger-Delta Coalition.

Some of the leaders included the National Coordinator, Niger Delta Youth Alliance (NDYA), Comrade Oris Bakpa; the President, Niger Delta Youth Empowerment Network (NDYEN), Comrade Elvis Abebiyein; the Regional Coordinator, South-South United Youth Association (SSUYA), Comrade Peter Okprgboro; the National Chairwoman, Niger Delta Women for Change (NDWC), Comrade Bridget Oghenekohwo, among others.

The Coalition said, “We, the Niger-Delta Coalition, a conglomerate comprising 26 dynamic youth associations, in conjunction with several distinguished Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)
and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), stand united in expressing our profound apprehension regarding the alleged financial improprieties, misuse of authority, lack of vision, poor performance and autocratic conduct exhibited by Engr. Mele Kyari during his tenure as the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

“As concerned and dedicated citizens of the Niger-Delta region, we fervently implore President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate action to remove him from office and
institute a comprehensive inquiry into his conducts.
Nigeria is often characterized as a nation blessed with abundant oil resources.

“Nevertheless, a glaring deficiency within the NNPC is the presence of dormant refineries scattered across the country”, the protesters said.

The Niger Deltans noted that the NNPC boasts of four refineries, two in Port Harcourt and one each in Warri and Kaduna, but regrettably, “despite the staggering allocation of 100 bilion Naira for refinery rehabilitation in 2022, these facilities, with a combined production capacity of 445,000 barrels per day, have failed to produce any refined products for the past several years.

“This lamentable situation has forced Nigeria, the continent's largest oil producer, to heavily depend on imported petroleum products due to the NNPC's inability to operate its refineries efficiently.

“As a result, the nation's economic backbone is irrefutably tethered to fuel prices and supply. As expected, a disruption in this vital sector would undoubtedly plunge the entire economy into a state of peril, a scenario we are already witnessing.

“The adverse ripple effect of this heavy reliance on the oil industry is unmistakable visible in Nigeria's inflation rate, which reached a staggering 25.80% in August of this year.

“The implications of such high inflation figures are far-reaching, encompassing elevated living costs, discouraging business environment, and a palpable instability in the nation's overall economic health. Such an extraordinary inflation rate is categorically unsustainable, and it poses a grave threat to the nation's well-being”, the protesting people of the oil-rich region said.

Furthermore, the groups alleged that “irregularities in the awarding of oil production contracts have cast a shadow of opacity over remittances to the Federation Account, giving rise to grave concerns about transparency and accountability in these financial transactions.

“Likewise, the dubious procurement of pipeline surveillance contracts, void of a transparent selection process, has sparked a multitude of questions about the responsible management of these critical responsibilities.

“As a collective of concerned and dedicated Niger-Deltans, we vow to uphold the law and employ peaceful demonstrations as a means to beseech President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove Engr. Mele Kyari from his position and launch an investigation into the leadership and management of NNPCL under his stewardship, specifically addressing the urgent issue of refinery revitalization.

“The lack of pump price regulations and mismanagement of the post subsidy regime has led to fuel price being sold at over 700 naira per liter in some parts of the Nation”, the protesters observed.

In conclusion, the protesters noted that “it is palpably evident that under the leadership of Engr. Mele Kyari, there has been no discernible surge in oil production and remittances to the Federation Account.

“We implore President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action, relieving him of his role and instigating the much-needed transformation of our beleaguered refineries, ultimately mitigating Nigeria's reliance on fuel imports.

“Enough is Enough! Mele Kyari Must Go and must be Probed”, the protesters concluded.

Nairaland / General / Yoruba Youth Council Passes Vote Of Confidence On Kyari, Assures Of Partnership by ToriTori247: 3:36pm On Oct 08, 2023
The Yoruba Youth Council (YYC) has passed a vote of confidence on the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mr Mele Kyari.

It described the attempts by some unscrupulous elements to blackmail Kyari as a distraction that would do the oil industry no good.

The YYC said that rather than joining other faceless group to blackmail the NNPC Boss, it would further increase its level of partnership and support Kyari in view of the numerous successes recorded by the GCEO in the oil and gas industry.

The group said it is on record that the NNPC GCEO was appointed at a time when disputes, aside from oil theft and pipeline vandalism, were paralysing oil production.

However, it added that within a few months of stepping into office, Kyari was able to resolve these disputes.

The Yoruba Youth Council in a statement jointly signed by the President and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Eric Oluwole and Saheed Adeola said when Kyari came in as the then GMD in 2019, he instituted a multi-security control room manned by the NNPC and all assets of the company were linked in real-time to the command-and-control center.

The Center was responsible for monitoring, locating, and reporting suspicious activities to various security agencies for intervention. The effort led to oil production recovering to 1.6
million barrels per day at the close of 2022.

The YYC saif that after seeing the damages which oil theft continued to wreck on the country’s earnings, Kyari pushed the Buhari administration to re-introduce private security arrangements which eventually led to the revalidation of Tompolo’s pipeline surveillance contract.

Since then, oil production has continued to stabilize and seen a steady increase.

The Yoruba Youths said findings revealed that Kyari came at a time when disputes, aside from oil theft and pipeline vandalism, were paralysing oil production. But within a few months of stepping into office, Kyari was able to resolve them.

These include the dispute between Shell and Belema Oil that shut in over 30,000 barrels per day production in OML 25, and over agreements with SNEPCo and other PSC partners to resolve the disputes around another deep offshore block, OML 118, leading to the renewal of that acreage with the prospect of a new $10billion investment in the development of the Bonga South-East Field.

Among the resolutions was the execution of the Abo OML 125 Heads of Terms leading to the resolution of the issues around most of the deep offshore Production Sharing Contracts.

This paved the way for the renewal of OML 125 and further investment.

There was also the successful resolution of 1993 PSC dispute which holds over 90% of Nigeria’s deepwater production, paving the way for unlocking over 7 billion barrels of oil, 20Tcf of gas reserves, and potential investment of up to US$40bn over the next five years, and at the same time relieves NNPC of almost US$10bn in contingent liabilities.

The YYC also said Kyari achieved the commercial discovery of hydrocarbon in the Gongola basin of the Upper Benue trough and attained the Presidential flag-off of the Kolmani Integrated Development Project (KIPRO) on 22nd November 2022, with over one billion barrels of oil and 500BCF of gas addition to existing hydrocarbon reserves, which will go a long way to enhance national energy security, create jobs opportunities and stimulate balanced economic growth.

As part of the strategic drive to shore up national reserves, tje Group said Kyari expanded hydrocarbon exploration campaigns to the Sokoto and Bidda basins and achieved a spud-in for the ongoing exploration projects in the Nasarawa and Chad Basins.

Within this year alone, the Council said Kyari achieved first oil in OML 13, restored production in OMLs 11 and 18, and currently working to achieve first oil in OMLs 83/85
among others.

Kyari is also taking major initiatives that will move towards achieving FID for major projects in the deepwater and frontier basins such as the Bonga Southwest Apraro, Bonga North,
Prowei, KIPRO, Owowo, Bosi, and so on.
Politics / NSCF Joins Call For Arrest Of Leaders Of Kyari Must Go Now Group by ToriTori247: 2:28pm On Oct 08, 2023
The Northern Stakeholders Consultative Forum (NSCF) has joined the chorus of voices demanding the arrest of leaders of the "Kyari Must Go Now" group, who have made threats to shut down Nigeria's economic activities by occupying critical national assets and exposing nude women on the streets.

NSCF Spokesman Comrade Danjuma Paul expressed concern over these threats and called for quick action against those responsible, stating that their motives must be probed to prevent further threats to national security or economic progress.

Referring to the petition submitted against Kyari by the group, Paul stated that it was commissioned by self-appointed enemies of the NNPCL GCEO.

He stated that their motives must be interrogated in order to ensure that they do not pose any further threats to national security or economic progress.

Paul also referred to the petition that had been submitted against Kyari by the said Kyari Must Go Now group and said that it was commissioned by self-appointed enemies of the NNPCL GCEO.

"These paid individuals recommended among other things, a Forensic Audit of the Fuel Subsidy regime in the last 8 years.

"To fake a semblance of legitimacy, this obscure coalition claimed to be key supporters of President Bola Tinubu after which they threatened to mobilize and organize a one million youth march if Kyari was not relieved of his position as the GMD of NNPC," Paul said.

He further stated that these individuals were posing an imminent national security threat and apparent saboteurs of the Tinubu administration.

"Some claiming even being lawyers yet vowed to shut down critical national economic assets such as East-West Road, Benin-Ore Road, Abuja-Lokoja Road, Asaba-Onitsha Road while mobilizing another 500 youths to shut down NNPC Towers in Abuja.

"Such disruption can lead directly or indirectly towards fuel shortages resulting into violence putting nation's stability at risk jeopardizing foreign investments thereby undermining regional integration thus hampering overall economic growth & progress," he said.

Paul underlined how such actions could cause significant harm both socially and economically: "The disruption caused by transportation routes being blocked off along with oil industry will undermine our country's progress towards social unity through regional integration whilst also affecting foreign investment."

Finally he called upon law enforcement officials to take immediate action against those identified signatories involved with this senseless petition so as to ensure uninterrupted flow continues without hindrance, protecting the nation’s interest and ultimately safeguarding safety & well-being all Nigerians.

"The numerous NNPC’s achievements under Mele Kyari point out commitment towards developing energy sector improving economy -with continued growth investment corporation undoubtedly achieve even greater milestones future", the group said.
Business / Group Demands Sack Of Mele Kyari, Probe Of Allegations Of Corruption In NNPCL by ToriTori247: 12:56am On Oct 08, 2023
The Mega National Movement For Good Governance (MNMGG) has demanded the immediate sack of the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)

The group, which consists of a coalition of 19 youth groups, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and civil society organisations (CSOs), equally demanded the probe of allegations of monumental corruption entrenched in NNPCL under his leadership.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, the Spokesperson of the Spokesperson Mega National Movement, Ibrahim Tijani, said the group is deeply
concerned about the instability of the prices of petroleum products, resulting from the
somersault in policies.

Listing the sins of the NNPCL’s GCEO, the group said there was lack of due process in the appointment of Engr Mele Kyari, accusing him of failure to remit revenues to the Federation Account, and inconsistency.

The movement said, they are also saddened by the sudden scarcity of fuel in particularly the Federal Capital and other major cities and towns that was fueled by the intention of the Independent Petroleum Marketers of Nigeria (IPMAN) to hike fuel prices within the week.

“We are worried also by the mounting allegations of fraud, embezzlement, and corruption within the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) since the appointment of Engr Mele Kyari as Group Chief Executive Officer.

“As a coalition of patriotic groups, we have identified allegations of significant
irregularities within the NNPCL, including fuel subsidy scams, under-remittance of oil
sales revenue, corruption, shady pipeline surveillance contracts, and oil theft.

“These issues have had a collective detrimental effect on the majority of Nigerians, while benefiting only a few greedy individuals, embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, and fraudulent accounting practices. These actions not only undermine the company's financial stability but also have far-reaching consequences for stakeholders and the overall economy.

“Among the numerous cases of financial impropriety against Kyari is the deduction of N2.1 trillion from the monthly revenue of NNPC, which was not remitted to the Federation Account.

“Additionally, Kyari is believed to be responsible for the supply of adulterated or bad fuel that entered the country in 2022, causing damage to many vehicle engines and generators.

“These allegations of massive corruption and fraudulent diversion of billions of dollars to personal and cronies' accounts must be thoroughly investigated, and Kyari should be prosecuted if found guilty”, the coalition lamented.

On lack of due process and transparency in Kyari’s appointment, the movement said, “We would like to highlight that the appointment of Engr. Mele Kyari as GCEO of
NNPCL did not follow due process as enshrined in the provisions of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA).

“Considering that NNPCL recently transitioned to a private company in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIAAct, 2021), it is no longer allowed to have recourse to state funds.

“Its shares and assets, including oil blocks and refineries, are now held by the Ministries of Petroleum and Finance.

“However, NNPCL has failed to operate as a Joint Production Venture (JPV) with Western Oil Majors (WOM), as required by law.

“Furthermore, the NNPCL has not been transparent in publishing it's crude contracts and statements of accounts under Engr. Mele Kyari's leadership”, the group alleged.

Picking holes in NNPCL’s remittances to the Federation Account, the group recalled that “In 2022, Kyari and the NNPC management failed to remit any funds to the Federation Account for seven consecutive months.

“Despite Nigeria recording N16 trillion in oil sales during that year, the NNPC did not make any remittances. This lack offinancial responsibility is unacceptable and raises serious questions about the management of the company's revenues.

“Kyari must explain how these funds were spent and provide transparency (sic) regarding the companies that received
subsidy payments”, the Coalition demanded.

Insisting on the restoration of transparency and accountability in NNPCL, the group stated that “As concerned and patriotic citizens, we believe that the government should be interested in knowing the true nature of NNPCL's oil production contracts and remittances to the Federation Account, as well as the transparency of pipeline surveillance contracts awarded by the NNPCL in line with global best practices.

“We had expected the President Tinubu administration to insist on the implementation of the PIA or the PIB Act, not only to sack and probe Engr. Mele Kyari but also other key figures in the NNPCL, such as the Executive Vice President (Upstream), Adokiye Tombomieye, Managing Director Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Ali Muhammad Zahra, and the Director National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NPIMS), Bala Wunti.

“This comprehensive action is necessary to clcan up the corruption and decay within the NNPCL”, the group observed.

Frowning at inconsistencies in Governnent actions, the movement noted that “It is unfortunate that Engr. Mele Kyari, who allegedly shortchanged every Nigerian through under-remittance to the Federation has been allowed to remain in charge of the NNPCL, while heads of other important denartments and EFCC, have been sacked, arrested, and probed. This raises the question of why the case of the NNPCL led by Engr. Mele Kyari is being treated differently.

“If the government is genuinely committed to fighting financial malfeasance, oil theft, dubious pipeline surveillance contracts, fuel subsidy scams, under-remittance to the Federation Account, abnormalities, and lack of transparency in the NNPCL, then Engr. Mele Kyari should not be allowed to continue in his position.

Demanding for the removal of Kyari, the Coalition said that “It is evident to most Nigerians that there has been no significant increase in oil production and remittance to the Federation Account since Engr. Mele Kyari assumed the position of GCEO of the NNPCL.

“Therefore, we urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take action and fire and probe Engr. Mele Kyari.

“This is crucial for the transparency, accountability, and development of the Nigerian petroleum industry.

“Given the numerous allegations of financial improprieties and the lack of accountability within
the NNPC under Kyari's leadership, it is imperative that he be removed from his position.

“The Federal Government must take immediate action to address these issues and ensure that those responsible for corruption and embezzlement are held accountable.

The Nigerian people deserve transparency, accountability, and a leadership that prioritizes the country's economic stability and the well-being of its citizens.

“It is crucial to address these allegations, conduct a thorough investigation, and prosecute those responsible for corruption and fraudulent practices.

“Restoring transparency, accountability, and financial stability within the NNPC is essential for the well-being of the Nigerian economy and
its citizens”, the group said.
