http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticleNew.aspxfile=data/theworld/2007/October/theworld_October74.xml§ion=theworld&col=LAGOS - Police have arrested five members of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in southwestern Nigeria on suspicion of gang-raping a teenage schoolgirl, a police spokesman said on Tuesday. The 17-year-old was abducted and raped 10 days ago in Ilesa town in Osun state after she refused to testify against an opposition party at an election tribunal, according to local media and the opposition party. Hundreds of petitions are being heard across Africa’s most populous country to resolve disputes arising from elections last April that were so badly rigged they were deemed not credible by international observers. ‘The girl was raped and given inhuman treatment,’ a spokesman for the police in Osun said by telephone from the state capital Osogbo. He said the five suspects, all members of the PDP, will soon be charged. Four other suspects are still on the run. Reports of the rape have sparked outrage, with one local women’s group threatening to stage street demonstrations. Spokesman for PDP in Abuja was not available to comment. The Action Congress party, which has challenged the election result in Osun that gave sitting Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola victory, said the rape was part of a plan to muzzle opposition in the state. ‘The girl’s only offence is that she was present when a PDP chieftain was committing an electoral fraud in Ilesa during the April election,’ AC spokesman Lai Mohammed said. ‘This is not just sheer criminality, it is bestiality to gang-rape a 17-year-old secondary school girl,’ Mohammed said. April polls were billed as a watershed for Nigeria, marking the first democratic transfer of power from one civilian to another in its 47-year post-independence history. But fraud, violence and intimidation—mostly by the PDP—were so widespread the main local observer group called the vote a ‘charade’. President Umaru Yar’Adua, whose landslide victory is being challenged by the opposition, acknowledged shortcomings in the elections but said he believed he had the mandate of a majority of Nigerians. He has pledged to reform the electoral process. |

Most of these 'nairaland addicts' made negative contributions to the website. |
A lot of forum members nagged and complained about the website and its owner; they were 'nairaland addicts'. |
Maintaining sanity on the website was difficult because of vulgar-mouthed ( ) members like Islander. |
Seun was despised by many (e.g. Islander) simply because he tried to maintain a level of sanity in his website. |
Toyinrayo claimed to be the boss but the forum was actually owned by a young Nigerian called Seun Osewa. |

thinking out loud, "My interests lie in the ICT field (being a computer science graduate) and i am particularly interested in database applications (oracle certified), sports [soccer(arsenal)], music production (hip hop) and graphics design. The problem is that i hate 9-5 with a burning passion and would like to setup my own web-based business. However i am undecided about what type of online business to start up. Guess i'd have to sleep on it." @seun,makemoney & rufaai. Thanks for the contributions. |
What type of business opportunities will you take advantage of if you had 24-7 internet connection? |

source: http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=430686 Liverpool have completed the signing of Real Madrid youngster Gerardo Bruna. The 16 year old, of Argentinean extraction, will join up with the Anfield side's youth teams after being earmarked as the next Lionel Messi. Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez himself has apparently given his approval to the signing, citing the youngster as a long-term investment. |

source: http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/7008196.stm Didier Drogba was sent off and captain John Terry suffered a fractured cheekbone as Chelsea made it four games without a Premier League victory. Drogba, back after a month out with a knee injury, looked lively following a subdued first half from the home side. But after forcing Kasey Keller into a save he received a second booking when his boot caught Chris Baird's face. Salomon Kalou and Joe Cole also went close but Paul Konchesky and Diomansy Kamara nearly won it for Fulham. It was another day of frustration and looking back to happier times for the Blues, whose fans again chanted former manager Jose Mourinho's name during a tepid first half devoid of real entertainment. Chelsea suffered a blow before the kick-off when midfielder Michael Essien was ruled out with an injury, while boss Avram Grant sprang something of a surprise by leaving out winger Florent Malouda. His three-man attack of Kalou, Drogba and the woefully ineffectual Andriy Shevchenko looked disjointed and posed few problems for the visiting defence. If anything, Fulham, who last won at Stamford Bridge in 1979, could have gone to the break a goal ahead. Clint Dempsey headed just wide of Petr Cech's far post and referee Martin Atkinson turned down a strong claim for a penalty when Tal Ben Haim headed the ball on to his own hand after a long throw-in. Drogba's main contribution was failing to get on the end of an inviting centre from the impressive Joe Cole and being booked for insisting Baird had impeded him. Terry receives treatment after suffering his blow during the first half. It got worse for Chelsea when Terry, who was hurt in an aerial collision with Dempsey in the first period, had to be replaced at the break by Alex. They could have gone in front right at the start when their best player Joe Cole surged clear down the right and crossed to Kalou who, put off by his marker, could not get clean enough contact but still managed to scuff the ball at Keller, who palmed it on to the post. Fulham weathered that burst to exert some pressure of their own and it was no surprise when Grant hauled off Shevchenko and brought on Claudio Pizarro. Drogba was being well marshalled but showed his first real flash of brilliance just after the hour mark when he controlled the ball and unleashed a rasping drive which Keller did well to push away. Kalou then headed over from Ashley Cole's cross and wide from a free-kick, while Joe Cole slipped the ball just wide of Keller when put through. Chelsea were finally on top but they were reduced to 10 men when Drogba raised his boot while challenging Baird for a loose ball and caught the defender flush in the face. Atkinson had no option but to show a second yellow card and Grant replaced Ashley Cole with Malouda in a desperate bid to snatch victory. It almost backfired when Konchesky broke free on the left and Cech saved with his feet from the left-back. And there was still time for Kamara to fluff a glorious opportunity after gliding past Claude Makelele, only to hesitate before shooting past the far post. Chelsea were greeted by a chorus of booes at the end and the sound of their popular former manager's name ringing around the stadium. They had done nowhere near enough to dispel the memory of the acrimonious end to his reign. |
