GREAT IFE INDEED!!! Mister! If you don't have any meaningful contribution to this intellectual brawls please, your silence will be highly recommended. Team Unilorin is made up of 4 members. We all write essays and scrutinize it before picking the best 2. And since my essay couldn't make it to the final, it means I can't contribute as contestant but as an audience. That's the modality. OAUTemitayo: Systems and techniques are prone to manipulation. The solution sometimes is not the scrapping but the plugging of the holes and vulnerabilities. If Fayose can manipulate his way through federal government appointment process despite federal character, imagine what he can do in Ekiti state where his words are laws. Removal is not the answer. What you are saying is tantamount to saying Nigeria should be scrapped because we have not been able to achieve our aims since 1960 My conclusion here is where ignorance is a bliss, it's folly to be wise |

emaculate99: We are not arguing that ethnicism should matter in appointments. If we are arguing that, this would have been OK. we are saying that it should matter. What you brought up there borders around ethnicism and not Federal Character. Federal Character allows for a particular percentage for each ethnic group. If that is the case, I wonder how such situation given above could happen.
You should know that the principle is not justiciable in Nigeria as a law student. That means the government can choose to forgo it or to use it. That's why those people up there could employ people of their regions. This will then bring marginalisation. But you know if it is made justiciable, such thing cannot happen without the wrath of law. As a constitutional law student, you know that principle is placed under Chapter 2 of the constitution which is considered to be our rights that are being hidden away from us with the non-justiciability clause. Tell me if I am wrong. You should know better. I am finding it hard to comprehend your legal term. Is that your justiciable synonymous with justifiable? Or what? please, I'm now a law student. I'm a student of Human anatomy. Clarify that Sir |

OAUTemitayo: In Nigerian public employment process there is nothing called catchment area. It is based on state by state. Well the quota system said it should be shared equally among the states. You are a contestant. Don't you have any question for Unilorin. Well, I believe you have done a great deal in whetting my appetite with your replies. Asking me if I have question for Unilorin is wrong na. l direct my questions to whomever l want. I'm only part of team Unilorin not a contestants in this final. But all in all. Kudos to you Sir. I've learned a handful from the wealth of your knowledge and doggedness. |

@emaculate99,
Another problem of federal character is particular tribal domination. When a federal parastatal is led by a particular tribe, that tribe dominates the parastatal. For instance, someone from Yoruba leads a parastatal, 80% of the parastatal will be Yoruba. And this is the trend in all the federal parastatals that is once a person in one tribe is appointed to a public office, he starts recruiting his family and friends into the sysytem. As seen in one Chief Ferdinand Anikwe and among others who recruited about 40 new staff members most of whom are his friends and family members in Ezeagu LGA of Enugu state.
Tell me I'm wrong |

OAUTemitayo: Brother catchment areas applies only to Education issues. I will advice you to seek for more information on this topic instead I think you are incorrect o. Catchment areas are areas with little or no development academically, socially and economically. So, don't limit it only to education. By the way, you didn't say anything about the quota system?? |
Education › Re: Nairaland Interschool Debate 3RD EDITION -Winner- Obafemi Awolowo University by Tourshaw: 10:46pm On May 08, 2016 |
OAUTemitayo: A critical example is Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti who proclaimed that he helped some Ekiti indigenes into the Federal public service. Shouldn't there be a question of how he helped them when the law stated that existing vacancies should be advertised for all intending applicants to apply? How could he have been able to do this if not for the fact that he was a member of the then ruling party? Such was the recklessness that the Governor was even the one presenting federal appointment letters to people! This is a pointer to the fact that politicians and the top echelon of the civil service are the one responsible for the decay in the public service. I handpicked that from your thought provoking piece. All I can say is that what you were trying to say is federal character principle is not manifested in Ekiti. In that wise, why don't you support the scrapping then, after all, it's not serving the purpose of its creation. Had it been Federal character has gone to an exile of no return, such incident like the Fayose would have gone into extinction too. If you have contrary opinion, your response will be highly appreciated always boss. |

@OAUTemitayo and emaculate99,
I'm delighted reading your essays and at the same time, I'm disappointed that you are arguing for federal character and you didn't at all talk about some subsets of Federal of character, like catchment areas and quota system. If you can say something about it, it will really depict the fact that you have researched this sensitive topic to a convincing doubt and you have the good appreciation of it.
Thanks in anticipation |
