@ reston: one of the links you posted about affluent African American communities in the US, lists maryland, which has one of the highest concentrations of Nigerian immigrants after Houston and Georgia?

I dont know why you're acting as if you dont know Africans are routinely included when making blanket statements about black incomes and achievements in the US.

I know many AAs try to officially differentiate between the two (I have a cousin at Howard), but you cant ignore the fact that when compiling general statistics on blacks, society lumps everyone together.

In any case, you could have also posted your message on another thread where Africans and AAs are trying to unite.
LiteratureRe: Which Books/Novels Are You Currently Reading? by tpia: 2:21am On Nov 15, 2008
The Diamond of Darkhold  by Jeanne Duprau.

Last book in the Ember series.

I had to clear my schedule somewhat to read it, and it doesnt disappoint, imo.

the author tries to wrap up the story of Ember (a bit too finally, though), though there's still a lot of material and story angles to use if she'd wanted to write some more sequels.

I'd originally thought the second book would end the entire series, so I must say, the author's a great storyteller and very imaginative. Funny too, in some parts of the book.

She started slow, then picked up speed , and reworked some of the old material. The exact ending was rather strange though.
CrimeRe: Guy Stabbed Girl Friend Around Genital Territory by tpia: 5:32pm On Nov 14, 2008
really?

why does she need advice? She should continue dating the man since she loves him.

Hope she's received medical attention for the wound? She can't let the boyfriend go without sex for too long nah. He must be a very loving person when he's not busy stabbing girls who don't give it up on request.  She shouldnt let a good man like that go- men are scarce, and besides, it was probably her fault for not having sex with him when he asked. She provoked him and brought it on herself.

Christianity EtcRe: Ancient Black Buddha by tpia: 5:21pm On Nov 14, 2008
how old is your description of buddha?

To me, its like saying Jesus was a blonde blue eyed Aryan.

People are free to believe whatever they like (to some, Jesus was a black negro), but it still doesnt mean others have to ignore the facts on ground.

had to make a few corrections to my post.
What other functions does melanin have? I though it was a dermatological response only, since dark skin produces the stuff when the sun touches it. And you sort of can't discuss black skin without mentioning it,since skin colour is merely the degree of melanin in your skin.

Light-skinned black people get darker after exposure to the sun, but it's temporary; they revert back to their colour once out of the sun for long enough. But with continued exposure they darken permanently, depending on the degree of exposure. If he was born in the tropics he wouldn't have the same complexion he had as a child; he would be darker. And even caucasians get darker in the sun; they turn brown, they get a tan. Everyone gets dark in the sun and lighter out of the sun.

Since scientists have established the negroids are the oldest race on earth, the question becomes:How did other skin colours come about? Climate.

@Morpheus24
What are the holes in the 'Out of Africa' theory?
I said "may"  as in have other uses besides protection form the sun.

Non-dark skinned people have been living in or around Africa for thousands of years- they havent turned black. ( eg North Africa and the meditteranean). South African whites havent turned black either. South African blacks have also remained black even though they arent living near the equator.

Light skinned Africans remain light skinned and they're found all over Africa . This issue of light skinned Africans has even led many to wonder if the light skin is from some white admixture somewhere. Many times its not. So why arent lighter skinned blacks feeling the negative effects of the sun's rays that their darker relations are being protected from by their brown skins?

Take for example a dark husband and light wife both living, eating and doing everything together for many years. They're both being exposed to the African sun yet no noticeable difference healthwise. Another example: say two siblings who grew up together- one dark and the other light.

I'm not saying melanin doesnt protect the skin from harmful radiation. I'm just pointing out that it may have other uses as well. Light skin here also means a naturally light skin, not a bleached one. Thats another topic.

on the Aryan theory:

No one knows exactly how and why these cultural complexes declined. Some have proposed the Aryan theory. This theory contends that highly patriarchal, aggressive and warlike nomadic white tribes known as Aryans, "the noble ones," swept down into the Indus Valley region some 3,500 years ago. The Africoid inhabitants of India were no strangers to combat, but the Aryans studied warfare and glorified battle. After centuries of conflict, they were victorious naming the region Aryavarta, "the Aryan Land." Modern Indian scholars have balked at this notion of the an Aryan army "sweeping down and driving the Dravidian populations before them." Rather they assert that the so-called Aryan types were northern populations who steadily migrated into India where they found the Indus Valley complexes already in decline. Invasion or migration theory, the fate of the more Africoid inhabitants of India remained much the same. A hierarchal system, Varna, (meaning color) was instituted by the ruling class of fairer-skinned northern nomads placing them at the top and darker skinned peoples at the bottom. Today this rigid socio-religous code is called the caste system. Cruel and harsh, this caste system controlled every aspect of daily life. It was written, "A Sudra (Black) who insults a twice-born man (white), shall have his tongue cut out. If he mentions the names and castes of the (twice-born) with contempt, an iron nail, ten fingers long, shall be thrust into his mouth. If he spits on a twice-born both his lips shall be cut off; if he urinates on him, the privates; if he breaks wind, the anus." This color-orientated social order became an integral part of the newly formed Hinduism.

ibid
the British didnt invent the caste system in India, so were they the ones who wrote these penalties? They may have simply tried to deduce the history of the culture they found in India, not invent one outrightly.

@ Bastage: you're looking at the whole thing from a modern viewpoint. What's actually being examined is the pre-modern depiction of these statues. The "modern" timeline includes your time frame here, even though you may consider it ancient.

You may also be assuming the blacks being referred to are African blacks. They are not. The original dark skinned Asian population, arent African, or negro. They're a different race more related to Asians, than black negroes.

and if you're a practicing Buddhist or Hindu, it may be a bit more difficult for you to look at this matter in a non- personal way.

A good example of these Africoid types which inhabited early India can be learned from the artifacts of the region. More than a few depict figures not only black in color, but Africoid in phenotype. Pictured above is a statue of the Hindu god Vishnu. One of his incarnations, Krishna, is often painted either blue or black. Among some Dalits and other Indians who declare a Black heritage, he is considered a heroic legendary prince of Sudra origins who helped break an era of "Aryan" dominance. Another incarnation of Vishnu was the Buddha whose reformist movement became known as Buddhism. As with the Hindu deities, a significant amount of Africoid featured Buddhas exist in Southern India and especially Southeast Asia.

like someone commented already is a patriachal society SAME AS LITERALLY ALL AFRICAN COUNTRIES,INCLUDING SOME ASIAN COUNTRIES however branding the uzoma okere incident a result of sexism is an unreasonable assertion and a slap in the face of the many killed and maimed by high handness and brutality of nigerian police, navy ,army e.t.c

how r bout the guy murdered on the foot ball field by the police?
or the guy murdered in cold blood right in his car?
the group of ibo boys killed?

yes, but the focus is on women here.
Christianity EtcRe: Ancient Black Buddha by tpia: 11:48pm On Nov 13, 2008
The question is which statues are older: the black ones or the white one posted by Bastage.

A black Buddha doesnt necessarily mean Buddha was African. There are dark skinned people who arent African- the melanasian blacks.

There's also the puzzle of the Olmec sculptures featuring giant faces with obvious negroid features. So this issue isnt limited only to the statue of Buddha.

The British may or may not have lied about the Aryan conquest in India. That story doesnt really hold water, on scrutiny. And I thought it was in the vedic scriptures or something? When did it turn to a British story?

Yes I understand it might happen in some other African countries but I beg to disagree that this is continent wide without adequate proof.

My emphasis still is on the fact that the program only shows an incident in one state in Nigeria and yet the title generalises with 'Africa' as if the program covers incidents in multiple African countries to justify the continental title.

Very much the similar way in which someone living in lagos for instance might (either out of ignorance or deliberately) lump together people from Ogoja, Etinan, Calabar, Oron, Eket, Ikot-Ekpene etc as 'Calabar men' when in reality there is no basis for such grouping.
black people and especially African people, have more in common than just skin color.

So yes, its a continent thing, not just a Nigerian thing. BBC and various other sites have run run documentaries on this problem of Africans branding young children as witches- it doesnt happen only in Nigeria. Check out the videos Karmamod posted.

As I stated somewhere before, poverty and poverty mentality can lead to a lot of other things due to this fear of the metaphysical which pervades the African mind.

Are you African?
Christianity EtcRe: How Did Black People Become Black? by tpia: 11:24pm On Nov 13, 2008
melanin may also have other functions besides protection from the sun's rays.

people tend to focus only on that area because its the most obvious. However, there are other races also living in tropical countries with varying skin colors, not only black. Also, light skinned black people do just fine in the tropics, with no noticeable difference between them and their darker toned relatives.

Is it now that the OP is asking if Nigeria is conducive and good for women? huh

I wonder where he or she has been all their life, when women have been the burden bearers in the country? You've never seen a Nigerian woman carry load on her head, lead three or four young children by the hand, and carry another little one on her back, while going to the farm or market? You've never seen a woman struggle and help her husband make it, only to be dumped for a younger competitor as soon as the man gets rich?

And you've never heard the song "Sweet Mother?"

Sweet mother, i no go forget you, for the suffer wey you suffer am for me oh
If i no chop, my mother no go chop
If i no sleep, the mother no go sleep

she no dey tire ah,

in fact, what's the meaning of this daft thread?

unfortunately, it does happen continent wide.

This particular incident was reported in a particular part of Nigeria, but the phenomenon is much wider than just that area. The degrees of torture  may be different, however.
