The countdown has began for the arrival of the performance of the hit Broadway musical about the life and music of Nigerian performer and political activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti at the prestigious Eko Hotel’s New Expo Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria on April 20-25, 2011.

Abia State born Onyekachi Gilbert Onwuka a.k.a. Yeka Onka has certainly come a long way from being rejected at two screening centres to making it to the last four standing in the maiden edition of the Nigerian Idol. Born to a musician father, she shares her experience.

I heard about the Nigerian I dol last year. It was a friend of mine who told me that he saw the advert and asked me to go register on-line, which I did. Then, I went for the audition at Enugu and go a ‘no’.
They said I couldn’t sing. I traveled down to Calabar and got the same response and got a ‘no’ again. Then, I finally came to Lagos, I had my audition and was taken.

Did you share that experience with your colleagues?

Funny enough, I’ve not been able to share it with them. But as at when I came to Lagos for my third audition, some of the crew already knew me because they’ve been used to seeing my face.

What has kept you going?

God has kept me. He has been my strength and everything. The other thing that has kept me is my determination. I’m a kind of person that if I set my heart to achieve something, I’ll definitely achieve it no matter what I face. And I don’t believe that what will be will be. I believe that I can turn things around to work for me.
So, when they gave me those nos, I didn’t take it as my destiny. I still told myself that I had to work harder.

Do you think you were better than those already evicted?

I’m not. The only difference between them and I is determination and how important my dream is to me.

What will you do with money if you win?

I’ll pay my tithe first and then in my State, especially the ones in Aba, it hurts to look into the eyes of those kids on the streets and see hopelessness. So, I intend helping them. I know that N7.5m can’t do that but I’ll just try.

What are your chances of winning?

100%. I think I have what it takes to be here because I can face and go through whatever challenge that I’m given.

Nigeria coach Samson Siasia has handed a recall to Birmingham striker Obafemi Martins, a sign that he is impressed by the lad’s recent run of form in England.

Martins scored the winning goal in his team’s victory over English giants Arsenal in the Carling Cup final last month. He will now be expected to lead the front line for Nigeria in their must win AFCON qualifier against Ethiopia on March 27.

Also returning to the team after prolonged absence due to injury is Zaragoza’s Ike Uche who has not featured for Nigeria since 2009. Acquiescing to pressure, Siasia recalled Uche who has shown glimpses of his old self since he returned to playing last month.

Everton’s Victor Anichebe will also be making a return to the team after missing out on the World Cup due to injury.

Siasia has also recalled players from the silver-winning Olympic team of 2008 that he coached. Defenders Olufemi Olubayo of Xanthi, Dele Adeleye of Metalurg Donesk and Aalesund striker Solomon Okoronkwo have been on the fringes of the senior team but will now be expected to become part of his future plans.

Nigeria need to win this game against Ethiopia in order to maintain site of Group Four leaders Guinea.

The stupidity of many Nairalanders have always amazed me, now it is at an irredeemable new all low height. Only a foolish and idiotic not-so-smart person will believe this non-sense. Dame Jonathan may have her shortcoming with the use of English (which many in this forum cannot express themselves with either verbally or in written format. But do you think someone who cannot speak a language very well can go ahead and write that same language  proficiently either correctly or wrongfully. It takes someone really good to put such wrong English (what we call broken bottle) in writing. Some mischievous is certainly behind all this, and the law of retributive justice will certainly catch up with this fellow. This goes to show how Nigerians will over abuse the right to information, simply because majority of its citizens are Illiterates (over 70% educated illiterates), and nairaland is a perfect example.

A soft-sell magazine had written that Funke Akindele was allegedly violated during a robbery incident on location of Omo Ghetto (part two) and that she had become so arrogant that she slaps people at will on location.

But in refuting the story, Funke and her management company, Stingomania Entertainment, said the story was not true and that the writer wrote with deliberately intent to malign the star.

“The robbery took place on location where lots of people were present, and if I were violated the people in the house next to the hotel, who were looking at us while the robbery was going on, would have known. It would have been a common knowledge, I don’t know why a newspaper reporter would just sit down and fabricate such a lie,” Funke said.

Chief Executive Officer of Stingomania Entertainment, Ope Banwo, said a letter had been written and sent to the magazine through its lawyer and the magazine’s response would determine the next step. “This impunity against celebrities cannot continue, it has to stop,” he said.

Meanwhile, Funke has concluded work on The Return of Jenifa, a movie she said would dwarf whatever height Jenifa reached. “You need to see The Return of Jenifa,” she said after showing this reporter a promo copy. “We didn’t spare cost or efforts, this project will make my past jobs look like child’s play.” With sparkling location shots that had not been seen in her previous works, the actress, who is a Lagos indigene, might be aiming at another box office.

The movie would be in the cinemas from August, but before that Funke would be hosting friends, fans and corporate stakeholders to a dinner later this month to unveil her plans for 2011 and appreciate those who have stood by her.

A rep tells us exclusively that Overdose has been contracted to work on an Amstel Malta Box Office (AMBO) movie. The movie will be centered round a brilliant law school student ‘Alero Coker’ who is faced with the dilemma of either focusing on a career in Law or pursuing her true passion for Rap Music.

The movie is to be directed by Izu Chukwu

The artiste who is signed to X3M Music label, will pen down five songs for the hip-hop movie.

Two singles from OD’s recently released ‘Hustle or Die’ album, ‘Ginjah me up’ and ‘Hold ya side’ will also be used as soundtracks in the movie.

‘Featuring in a hip-hop movie is one thing I’ve always thought of doing, the opportunity is here now and I sure will have fun throughout the shooting’, Overdose tells.

This is seen as a new development for hip-hop acts in the Nigeria as their foreign counterparts like Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Xzibit and Common who are veteran rappers have gained prominence in Hollywood.

Ace comedian, Holy Mallam has called Nira Records into a legal over a breach of agreement. Holy Mallam through his lawyer claims that the international company did not comply with statutory laws regulating the guiding replication of literary works.

The Dagrin Movie Project recently got a major boost as the producer of the movie, Ope Banwo acquired the exact Nissan Maxima in which Dagrin had the ill-fated accident that led to his death for a huge sum of money.

Investigations revealed that the decision to use the Nissan MAxima with customized plate Dgrin 03 was birthed by Barrister Ope Banwo who suggested that for justice to be done to the movie, it is necessary to use the exact car in which Dagrin had the accident in recreating the fatal accident. The car which had been sold to scrap dealers in Owode Oniran was first priced at one million naira a price that Ope Banwo did not find palatable but due to the importance of the car to the development of the story, Ope Banwo continued with the negotiation and soon brought Rachael Oniga, a cast of the movie who knows some big boys in Owode to be involved in the deliberation; it was later agreed that the car be sold for half a million naira.

When asked why he is willing to spend so much money on a car that was damaged beyond repairs, Ope Banwo said ‘once you decide to do a biopic, there are some things you have to do to create as much realism of the real story as possible. There are some things you should not compromise as a producer if you really believe in doing your best for your audience”.

When asked what he would do with the N400,000 worth of scrap metal once the movie is done, Ope Banwo said he is not sure right now. He said he may probably donate the car to the museum since the Dagrin accident has become a national event.

An award-winning stage musical about the life of the late Nigerian musician Fela Kuti is to be staged in his home country for the first time.

Fela! opened in New York in 2008 and transferred to Broadway in 2009, winning three Tony awards.
It will be staged at the upmarket Eko Hotel in the capital, Lagos, in April.

Fela! explores the musician's life as an artist and political activist through more than two-and-a-half hours of extravagant song and dance routines.

Organisers said: "The aim of Fela! in Lagos is to unite and connect Africans in spirit and unity, to serve as a catalyst for cultural revival in Nigeria, and to celebrate Fela Kuti, for the contribution he has made to Nigeria and the world."

Kuti, who died in 1997 from an Aids-related illness, was the king of Afrobeat, a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythms.
He also became a national icon for speaking up for Nigeria's poor and challenging the country's military regime.

The show is set in his nightclub The Shrine, six months after the death of his mother at the hands of the government.
'Global figure'

One performance of the show will also be staged at his family's New Afrika Shrine club, which is modelled on Kuti's original venue, the musician's daughter Yeni Kuti told the Agence France Presse news agency.
Producer Stephen Hendel told The Associated Press that Kuti was "without question one of the great composers and musicians and activists of the second half of the 20th Century."
"He's as much of a global figure and a global artist as anybody," he said.

The Broadway cast will make the trip, including Sierra Leonean-American actor Sahr Ngaujah in the title role.
The show's executive producers include rapper Jay-Z and actors Will and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Kidnappers have released Saheed, the son of Ibadan billionaire, Aare Musulimi of Yorubaland, Arisekola Alao.
Sources divulged that the

abducted young man regained his freedom after the payment of fifty million naira by his family.
The kidnappers had originally asked for a twenty billion naira ransom, then reduced it to five hundred million.
They collected fifty million naira and released Saheed, three days after he was abducted at his office.
He was kidnapped on Friday, February 18, 2011 at around 7.30 p.m at his office.

He was reportedly forcefully dragged out of his range rover jeep and taken away on arrival at the place from a outing.

He is said to have gone low profile since his release.
