The Harry Potter movies will receive a BAFTA award, Britain’s equivalent of the Oscars, for their contribution to cinema,organisers said on Thursday.

The award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema will be presented at the main BAFTA prize ceremony in London on February 13 to J.K. Rowling, best-selling author of the original wizard stories, and series producer David Heyman.

The first seven films have amassed around $6.4 billion at the global box office, according to ticket tracking site www.boxofficemojo.com. The final installment, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’, is due out on July 15.

Fresh facts have emerged on how a christening ceremony was turned into mourning session in Ikirun, Osun State, on New Year day, when a drunk policeman, O Kelechi, opened fire on three brothers riding on a motorcycle, killing two in the process.

Investigation by PUNCH METRO showed that the policeman opened fire on the three brothers at a checkpoint along Oke-Afo area of Ikirun, when they were returning home after buying a ram for the christening of their father’s newborn.

It was gathered that the eldest of the brothers, Lukman Adesina(18) was the first to be felled by bullets fired by Kelechi, while Taiwo Adesina(16) later died in a hospital following gunshots from the policeman.

Kelechi was later overpowered by a mob and burnt to death. The mob also burnt the divisional police station along Federal Government College road, Ikirun, and the police Motor Traffic Division beside the palace of the town’s monarch, Akirun of Ikirun.

Many vehicles and motorcycles belonging to policemen were destroyed in the orgy that followed.

The Divisional Police Officer of the area, Mr Abiodun Alabi, was beaten to a pulp by the irate mob, who stormed the station and set detainees free.

Both Lukman and Taiwo were from the same mother while their third brother, (name withheld) who was also shot at by Kelechi but escaped with bullet wound, is from another mother.

Both parents of Lukman and Taiwo are still alive but the third brother lost his mother few months ago.

The father, Alhaji A. Adesina, is a motorcycle dealer and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ifelodun Local Government Area.

A resident, who gave his name as Tobi Johnson, said the policeman, who thought the motorcycle they were riding was for a commercial purpose, had accosted the brothers when they were on their way to buy the ram. He allegedly demanded for money but the brothers refused, insisting that the motorcycle was not for a commercial purpose.

On their way back from the ram purchase, the policeman stopped them again and made the same demand, which degenerated into disagreement and the shooting.

Condemning the act, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Chief Adejare Bello urged police authorities to give their men and officers more training on the use of arms, saying no amount of placation could assuage the sorrow of the family, who lost two sons on New Year day.

Commissioner of Police, Osun Command, Mr Solomon Olusegun, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, said only the policeman and one victim died, adding that the situation has been brought under control.

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday fingered greed and the desire to accumulate monies that were not needful, rather than of lack of professionals in key positions, as the problem militating against Nigeria’s development.

Speaking at the first new year service at the Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja, Jonathan also described terrorism as a global trend which Nigeria was also experiencing, as part of the global village, noting that those behind the bombings were agents of demons.

He said he hated to use the word corruption to describe Nigeria’s problem but noted that the desire by people in positions to accumulate so much money that they or their grand children could not exhaust was the reason the country was lacking in the midst of plenty.

Responding to the call by Very Reverend Innocent Jooji, who stood in for Most Reverend John Onayekan, that professionals should be appointed into their areas of competence for greater performance, President Jonathan said that was not the problem of the country.

He informed the crowd that his administration had put professionals in key ministries but noted that with permanent secretaries and directors who had been long in ministries, if they were committed and ready to serve the nation well, the appointment of a non-professional to such ministry would not be noticed.

“I agree that round pegs should be put in round holes. My administration has been putting professionals in core ministries. This is the first time that a health professional is heading the Ministry of Health, the same with some other core ministries.

“However, what makes government to excel is not the professionalism of ministers but their integrity. What sets us backward as a nation is greed, where one person takes so much money that he and his grand children cannot finish spending. We should not accumulate what we do not need. We will do our best to select professionals but one thing we need is the credibility of the leaders,” he said.

Pray for Nigeria
Jonathan appealed to Nigerians to continue to pray harder for the country, as well as have faith in the country so that the action of detractors like those planting bombs would not deter the country from its march to greatness.

He explained that the road to greatness was not without obstacles, adding that “these distractions about explosions and bombs should be seen as obstacles placed on our way to greatness.”

He said Nigerians who watch international channels would agree with him that all over the world, there were issues of terrorism though most of them were not perpetrated by nationals of the affected nations, especially the developed nations.

To him, the issue does not reflect religion or ethnicity, pointing to the bomber in Egypt which is a predominantly Muslim country where a bomber entered a worship arena and detonated a bomb even on people of the same faith before concluding that “these are people that are used by the demon to set us back”.

His New Year wish to Nigerians, Jonathan said, “My new year wish for all Nigerians is that we should walk in unity and not discriminate among ourselves, with hard work and love, our country will be great”.

He charged Nigerians to exploit the diversity of the country and multi-ethnic composition to move to greater heights through cooperation.

Earlier, Jooji chided those canvassing for military rule as he insisted that the worst civilian regime was better than the best military government and dismissed those looking in the direction of undemocratic governance.

Of the people canvassing for military rule he said, “if those calling for the military are having hang over, they should go and sit down.”

He admonished politicians to seek for ways of economic and political emancipation that would attract development.

He counseled politicians against use of violence during election, pointing out that violence begets violence.

He had also called Jonathan to “while appointing ministers, assign people to their areas of specialization so that they can work competently. Someone who read History cannot be sent to be Minister of Finance. We can compensate our parties, friends and others in other ways because I know the pressure is there.

Asking for nominations and people bringing these kinds of people gives impression that we lack the required men.”

Lagosians are getting ready once again to witness this year’s Eyo Festival which will hold on Saturday, February 5 2011. This was confirmed by the Chairman of the festival planning committee, Mr. Disu Holloway.
‘The festival which was scheduled to have taken place in October last year was shifted to February this year due to the West African Senior Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), November/December in the country then’, Mr. Holloway explained to newsmen at the Palace of the Lagos monarch, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu.
The year’s festivals will feature cultural performances from several groups similar to other festivals in Lagos and is seen as a way of encouraging tourism in Lagos state

Comedian I Go Dye whose real name is France Agoda was beaten up (almost beat the life out of him) bad by military men in Warri at a rally at the Warri Township stadium, venue of Goodluck Jonathan-led Warri campaign for former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan took place. He was said to have been so badly battered that he had to be rushed to an undisclosed clinic for treatment.

We are informed that he and colleague I GO SAVE tried to force their way through the soldiers into the stadium, where the event was taking place as expected following the presence of the Presidency, security was beefed up and proper identification was required. The stern looking soldiers had reacted and descended on them both.

I go Save was bruised. They were beaten blue black. Ali Baba – who was the anchor of the event intervened, threatened to stop the event but was rather late as I go Die, who was meant to perform couldn’t perform as he was badly manhandled already by the security agents.

I go die demanded a public apology to be printed in a National newspaper and till date, no apology has been printed since the January 4th incident. The comedian has since been missing from the scene.
