Politics / CBN Watch Nigerian Banks Illegal Fx Transactions by Tradesrunner(m): 11:25am On Jul 20, 2015 |
I think Nigerian banks are conducting fraudulent transaction which should be reported to CBN. Why would they get dollars at N196 from CBN and sell same to their customers at N230 through debit cards? Even when the transaction get refunded, they will pay you like N190 to N199 for same thing you paid N230. This is fraud and CBN need to know. Banks should not operate black market business with their clients. It's illegal. |

Politics / Buhari's Trip To Us - All Expense Paid By Us Government. by Tradesrunner(m): 10:55am On Jul 20, 2015 |
With an official entourage of 33 including his son Yusuf, President Muhammadu Buhari arrives the Joint Base Andrews Airport, Washington DC Sunday to kick start his official visit to the United States. Buhari will have a private dinner with Madeline Albright former US Secretary of State after settling down at the historic Blair House in Pennsylvania Avenue, the first time a visiting Nigerian leader would be so honoured. The President who is billed to hold a Town Hall meeting with Nigerians in the Diaspora Tuesday will on Monday be officially welcomed at the White House starting with a breakfast meeting of five at the Naval Observatory, the official residence of the US Vice President Senator Joe Biden. The visit is strategic on many fronts because Nigeria and the US remain partners on many fronts. The US recognises Nigeria as an emerging economic giant not just in Africa but in the global village in addition this is the first time the US is inviting a newly elected African leader who has been in office for less than two months, to a state visit. President Buhari, has what it takes to drive this emerging role of Nigeria. The expectation that President Buhari will reposition the nation along the path of greatness is not misplaced. The importance of the visit to the US, is in the fact that the US is accommodating President Buhari at Blair House, the first of its kind for a Nigerian leader and ST NO EXPENSE TO THE COUNTRY.” Part of the high point of the visit is the long awaited lecture of Buhari at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) on his last day in the US. The institute had expected him to deliver a public lecture at the heat of the Presidential campaign in February. USIP Director of Programmes, Ms. Jennifer Cooke had envisaged an event that would attract a large audience of US policy makers, academics, business leaders, and Nigerians in the Diaspora, an expectation that has even become heightened with the President’s rising profile since his defeat of Goodluck Jonathan a sitting president and the first time this is happening in the political space of the country. The interactive session jointly organised by USIP, National Democratic Institute, International Republican Institute, Centre for Strategic Studies and the Atlantic Council will offer the President an opportunity to highlight on his policy direction and the expectations in the days ahead. |

Politics / Adopt APC Decision, Governors Tell Senators Thenationng by Tradesrunner(m): 9:58am On Jun 24, 2015 |
Governors elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have urged Senators and House of Representatives members of the party to always abide by the wish party. Tension has been brewing in the Senate over filling of the remaining four key leadership positions of the 8th Senate. While the party is said to be backing Senator Ahmad Lawan from North-East as the Senate Majority Leader, Senator George Akume from North-Central as the Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Olusola Adeyeye from South-West as the Senate Chief Whip and Senator Abu Ibrahim from North-West as the Deputy Chief Whip, some APC senators have been opposing the arrangement. The Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, were elected against the wish of the party. Governors of sixteen out of the 22 states controlled by the APC, attended a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari over the issue among others at the State House Abuja from Tuesday night till the early hours of Wednesday morning. Speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, the governors insisted on the supremacy of the party’s position, stressing that they have never gone against the wish of the party as governors. Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole said: “Basically what we are saying is that the senators should adopt the position of the party. We were all elected on the platform of the party. We are not just a collection of individuals. We are a political party and when the party has spoken we must listen. “Otherwise if it was a game of individuals like golf then individuals can go their ways. I think it is very clear at this point that the party has the responsibility to keep the system going. “So we as progressive governors we have listened to the president and we have discussed extensively and we are clear that the party’s position should be supported by the senators. This is the way it should be and we should start on a note of working closely,” he said. Oshiomhole added: “We as governors, we listen to the party and we expect our senators to also listen to the party. “We are going to call them and tell them this is it and explain our reasons. We can’t continue to allow individuals to…it is about party supremacy, ” he said |

Politics / Court Strikes Out Suit Seeking To Stop Gbajabiamila From Contesting by Tradesrunner(m): 10:34am On Jun 09, 2015 |
A federal high court in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital has struck out a suit seeking to stop Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila from contesting the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 8th Assembly. According to a statement by Hon. Rufai Chachangi the court denied the group seeking permission to stop Gbajabiamila from contesting. “It has come to our knowledge that there are misleading stories making the rounds in some sections of the media, stating that Court granted an order restraining Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila from participating in the speakership election to be conducted by House of Representatives tomorrow Tuesday 9th of June 2015,” Chachangi said. He noted further that: “We would like to state emphatically that Justice Abdul Kafarati of the Federal High court Abuja did not only refuse to grant the exparte order brought by a group known as the Registered Trustees of Social Justice and Civil Rights Awareness Initiative, but the judge ordered that the respondents be put on notice and the case was adjourned to 18th of June, 2015 for the hearing of the motion on notice.” “On the issue of professional misconduct, the State Bar of Georgia in a letter dated August 30th, 2010 stated clearly that allegation against Femi Gbajabiamila is not related to criminal allegation and that, “Mr. Gbaja is currently an active member in good standing of the State Bar of Georgia,” he added. He then restated that Gbajabiamila is eligible to contest. “Following the declaration by Justice Abdul Kafarati on 8th Of June, 2015, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila is qualified to contest for the Speakership election tomorrow 9th of June, 2015 and members-elect across party lines have in the vein resolved to sustain their unflinching support for the aspiration of Femi Gbajabiamila as the next Speaker of House of Representatives,” the statement read.

Politics / APC Postponed Nat Assembly Leadership Elections For Buhari’s Intervention by Tradesrunner(m): 10:12am On Jun 09, 2015 |
Faced with a looming crisis in securing the selection of its favored candidates for leadership posts at the Senate and House of Representatives, officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are weighing measures to force the incoming class of National Assembly members to postpone their convening beyond Wednesday. According to a senior party source, the postponement “is to enable President [Muhammadu] Buhari [to] rein in rebellious lawmakers within the ranks of our party.” Mr. Buhari is expected back in Abuja on Thursday night after attending the ongoing G7 meeting in Germany. Some APC lawmakers led by for former Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State have reportedly reached an alliance with People’s Democratic Party lawmakers overnight to present a PDP candidate as President of the Senate. Immediate past Senate President, David Mark, was named as the likely beneficiary of Mr. Saraki’s revolt. Former Governor Saraki is reportedly irate that he was schemed out of the APC’s nomination for the Senate Presidency. Last Saturday, the party bypassed the former governor amid concerns that he could not be totally relied upon to lead an effective and cooperative Senate that would give President Buhari reliable legislative backing. Instead, the APC adopted Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan from Nigeria’s northeast state of Yobe as its candidate for the Senate Presidency. SaharaReporters learnt that President Buhari had expressed serious concerns to some associates that a Nigerian Senate led by Mr. Saraki would not lend him the necessary legislative backing to wage a major war against corruption. Mr. Saraki carries a lot of corruption baggage, dating back to his days as an executive of the defunct Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria, and continuing with his tenure as Kwara State governor. SaharaReporters also learned that another group of lawmakers in the House of Representatives were also upset with the APC’s choice of Lagos legislator, Femi Gbajabiamila, as the party’s sole candidate for Speaker. Yakubu Dogara, an aspirant for the speakership who hails from Bauchi State, leads the disaffected legislators opposed to Mr. Gbajabiamila. An APC executive told SaharaReporters that some party leaders consider Mr. Saraki as the wrecking ball who must be subdued to ensure that the party does not lose the leadership of the Senate. In the midst of the internal squabble within the APC, SaharaReporters learnt that former Senate President David Mark has been mobilizing disgruntled APC senators to back him for a third term in the premier post at the Senate. Another source disclosed that several PDP senators were demanding outrageous sums of money from APC leaders in exchange for casting their votes for candidates favored by the party. |
Politics / APC Shuts N'assembly In Desperation To Stop Saraki, Dogara by Tradesrunner(m): 10:04am On Jun 09, 2015 |
n apparent desperation to stop Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon. Yakubu Dogara from emerging as Senate President and Speaker of Representatives respectively, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has shut every entrance into the National Assembly. As early as 6am, the road leading to the National Assembly had been cordoned off while policemen and soldiers had been been deployed to stop human and vehicular movement into the premises. The decision to shut the National Assembly was the fallout of the adoption of Saraki and Dogara by Peoples Democratic Party senators-elect as candidates for Senate president and speakership of the House last night. While the National Assembly is shut, President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of APC have scheduled a meeting with APC lawmakers at the International Conference Centre (ICC) this morning. The meeting is meant to compel Saraki or Dogara to step down for the party's candidates. There are fears that the inauguration of the 8th National Assembly may not hold today if the party fails to have its way. |
Politics / Elections In Akwa Ibom Turned Into State Terrorism — Umana, Apc Gov Candidate - by Tradesrunner(m): 10:36am On Jun 06, 2015 |
Obong Umana Umana, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the recent governorship election in Akwa Ibom State in this interview reviews the conduct of the election and the options before him. Excerpts: Elections have come and gone. Is it a forgotten matter? The elections cannot be forgotten for me and the good people of Akwa Ibom State. We are challenging the outcome of the purported governorship, State House of Assembly and the National Assembly elections at the tribunals. But some are asking why don’t you do like the PDP presidential candidate and congratulate the declared winner of the election? Umana-UmanaI would have been happy to do so if we had had valid elections and the election had been properly conducted under the terms and conditions stipulated by law. But that was far from being the case in Akwa Ibom because what we witnessed were elections that were characterised by widespread violence.
