I remember calling you around this time last year to wish you a Happy Father’s Day. I never imagined it would be the last one we'd share. You were the best dad any girl could ever ask for. You nurtured and guided me with all the strength and love you had. Your memory will forever live in my heart, you are deeply loved and will never be forgotten. Papa T |

Episode 3 The early morning breeze carried the faint smell of wet sand as Courage bent over her basin, scrubbing her clothes fiercely, as if trying to scrub away the stubborn thoughts clouding her mind. Her caramel skin glistened with a thin sheen of sweat, her long hair tied messily at the top of her head. She wore a simple gown, faded from too many washes, but on her, even the plainest fabric seemed to sit like royalty. As she squeezed out a blouse, a shadow fell across her. She stiffened slightly before glancing up. Chris. "Good morning, neighbour," he said, his voice light, his trademark smile already playing at the corners of his mouth. "Morning," Courage muttered, focusing on her laundry. Chris crouched nearby, a small bucket in hand. He didn't look like he came to wash much. More like he came to talk. Courage bit down her irritation. Why did he always find a reason to be around? Chris, in his late thirties, was everything a good woman might want — Godly, hardworking, built like a man who could carry the weight of a family on his shoulders. And yet, he puzzled Courage. She knew men like him. The ones who smiled wide, spoke softly, helped with heavy buckets — until they wanted more than you were willing to give. She didn’t trust easily anymore. Chris, unaware of the tightness in her chest, spoke casually. "This light wahala is getting worse oh. My frozen foods almost spoil yesterday. Imported goods don’t have patience like us, you know." "Maybe you should invest in a generator instead of talking about it every Saturday," Courage replied, sharper than she intended. Chris laughed — a rich, warm sound — but it only made Courage press her lips tighter. "I see you came back late last night," Chris said after a beat. "Who dropped you off?" Courage didn't look up from the shirt she was rinsing. "A friend." "Friend?" Chris repeated, as if tasting the word. "Was he the same guy from the church event? I saw the way you two... looked at each other." There was an edge beneath the humour now. Courage dropped the wet shirt into the rinse water with a splash and finally met his gaze. Her eyes were calm, but firm. "Chris, I don't owe you explanations about who I spend time with," she said, her voice even. Chris blinked, a little thrown. But then he smiled again, softer this time, less playful. "I know," he said. "I'm just... concerned." Concern. That word again. Everybody was always "concerned" until they demanded more than she was willing to give. She wiped her hands on a cloth, ready to leave the conversation behind. But Chris wasn’t done. "Courage," he said, more serious now, "Not every man that smiles sweet is genuine. Some only aim to break what they can’t build." There it was again — that unsettling sincerity in his voice. Different from the usual male games. And that somehow made Courage even more wary. "Thanks for the advice," she said, slinging her wet clothes into the basket. "But I know what I'm doing." As she carried her laundry toward the line, Chris watched her, something heavy in his chest. He had prayed for a wife. God had showed him Courage. But how do you love someone who has built walls taller than you can climb? Meanwhile, Courage's phone buzzed loudly on the windowsill. It was Daniel. > Daniel: "Missing you already. Hope we can plan something this weekend? Dinner? Just you and me?" Courage stared at the message, her heart tightening. Two men. Two possible futures. And one weary heart still fighting to protect its dignity in a world that didn't seem to value it anymore. Above her, the clouds thickened, dark and heavy. A storm was coming — and it wasn't the kind that rain could wash away. |
Episode 2 Courage was a woman of conviction. She had always prided herself on being focused — her career as a software engineer was thriving, and she didn’t need a man to complete her. After everything she’d been through, love felt like a complicated, messy thing that only left her hurt. Yet, now, she was standing at a crossroads. Two men, two very different paths, and Courage had no idea which one to follow. It all started during a weekend outing with her best friends, Tega and Faith. The two women were her pillars — both happily married, they often tried to nudge Courage toward the idea of romance, but they were always careful, understanding that she wasn’t in any rush. Today, though, their teasing had a different target. Tega, with her mischievous grin, leaned over the table. "So, Courage," she began, her voice dripping with playfulness, "Any new developments with your neighbor Chris? I see the way he looks at you. The guy’s practically falling for you." Courage rolled her eyes, laughing nervously. "Please, Tega. You know I’m not interested in him. He’s just... nice. He’s friends with everyone, always offering to help." Faith, the more thoughtful one, raised an eyebrow. "But what’s wrong with that? He’s kind, he’s hardworking, and he likes you, Courage. What’s not to like?" Courage sighed, stirring her drink. Her friends were relentless, and she could feel the weight of their questions pressing down on her. She wasn’t even sure if she liked Chris that way, but the thought of a relationship seemed like a distant, painful idea. "He’s... a nice guy, I guess," Courage said carefully, trying to sound nonchalant. "But that’s just it. He’s nice. I don’t need nice right now. I need more than just a guy who’s around to help with the groceries or fix things in my apartment." Tega leaned back, a teasing smile forming on her lips. "So, you’d rather be alone than give a guy like Chris a chance? I don’t know, Courage. You’ve been shut off for a long time. Maybe it’s time you let someone in." Before Courage could respond, Faith spoke up. "Honestly, you’ve been hurt before, we know. But you don’t have to stay in that place forever. I know you’ve been burned, but Chris... he’s different." Courage’s thoughts immediately drifted back to the other man who had also been vying for her attention lately — Daniel. She met him just a few weeks ago at a church event. He wasn’t flashy, but there was something about him that made her feel safe. His steady calm, his easygoing manner — it was like a breath of fresh air after all the drama she had experienced with past relationships. He had seemed so genuine, so respectful. But Daniel was different from Chris in more ways than one. Daniel was calculated, well-spoken, and mature. He had a clear purpose in life, and Courage admired him for his drive. But sometimes, she wondered if he was too... polished. Would he understand her world? Her work as a software engineer, the long hours spent coding, the mental exhaustion that came with solving complex problems? It was hard to imagine him fitting into her life. As she sat there, lost in thought, Tega nudged her. “Hey, I think you’re starting to warm up to Chris. You’ve been quiet for too long. What’s going on in that head of yours?” Courage glanced up, meeting her friend’s gaze. “I don’t know, Tega. It’s complicated. I’m trying to figure it out, okay? Between Chris and Daniel, I don’t know what I want anymore. They’re both so different, but they both make me feel things I haven’t felt in a while.” Faith raised an eyebrow. “You’re torn between the two, aren’t you?” Courage nodded, her heart heavy. “I’m not sure I’m ready for either of them. But there’s something about Chris... He’s always there, always offering to help. And Daniel... Daniel is different. He makes me feel like I’m someone worth waiting for, but sometimes I wonder if he really understands me — my work, my life. He’s not exactly in my world.” Tega smiled knowingly. “You’ll figure it out, babe. Just listen to your heart. I know you’re scared, but don’t let your past control your future. If Chris is offering something real, give him a chance. If Daniel is the one who makes you feel like you’re more than enough, go for him. But don’t let fear hold you back from either one.” The conversation hung in the air, the tension thick with unspoken thoughts. As the day wore on, Courage found herself more conflicted than ever. She had built a life for herself — strong, independent, and self-sufficient. But was that enough? Was love really something she was meant to have, or was it just a fantasy? Later that evening, after spending time with her friends, Courage returned to her apartment. She stood outside, looking up at Chris’s door, wondering what he was doing. The sound of laughter drifted from his side of the wall — he was with friends, just like always. It seemed like everyone in the neighborhood loved Chris. He was the type of person who could fit into any group, any situation. And maybe that was part of the problem. Maybe it wasn’t that he was too much of a “nice guy.” Maybe it was because he was too everywhere — always around, always making her feel like he was there just in case. But when she thought about Daniel, her mind felt clearer. He wasn’t as present in her life, but the quiet moments they had shared stood out. His steady nature, his focus on his career, how he seemed to respect her boundaries — it made her feel seen in a way she hadn’t felt in years. But still, she wasn’t sure if that was enough. As she lay in bed that night, Courage closed her eyes, the images of Chris and Daniel swirling in her mind. She needed time to think, but deep down, she knew one thing for sure: she wasn’t going to let fear dictate her future. She would have to make a choice — not based on what her friends thought or even what she’d been through in the past, but based on what her heart told her was rig |

The relationship ended painfully when word spread that Efe had impregnated a girl from the church choir. Courage was devastated, not just because she loved him, but because she had believed him. She had trusted his promises — only to learn that words could be empty. After Efe, she met Stanley. Stanley was different — or so she thought. He was polished, articulate, and successful — a man who seemed too good to be true. And he was. Six months into their relationship, after countless gifts and grand romantic gestures, Stanley convinced her to invest a large sum of money into a “business opportunity” he was starting. Blinded by trust, Courage agreed, believing that this was the kind of partnership marriage would look like. He disappeared two weeks later. His phone lines went dead. His apartment was empty. Only then did Courage realize she had been duped. The betrayal stung deeper than the financial loss. It was the feeling of foolishness that gnawed at her — how could she have trusted so easily again? Swearing to be more careful, she built even higher walls around her heart. Then came Charles. Charles was mature, calm, spiritual — everything she thought she needed. For the first time, she allowed herself to hope again. He attended Bible studies, quoted scriptures, and spoke about building a Christ-centered home. Three months into their courtship, she found out the unthinkable: Charles was already married — with two children. She discovered the truth by accident, through a casual conversation with a woman in church who mentioned seeing "Brother Charles" with his wife at a school event. That night, Courage sat on her bed, numb. Tears streamed down her face as she whispered to herself, "Never again. I am done." She promised herself to remain single, pouring all her energy into her career, her family, and her faith. Better alone than constantly broken. But life had other plans. Her mother was relentless. "Courage, you are not getting any younger oh!" she would call out over the phone almost every week. "When will I carry my grandchildren? Is it career you will marry? Or money you will sleep with at night?" Sometimes, Courage would smile sadly as she listened. Other times, the calls left her weeping silently into her pillow, battling between the desire to honor her mother’s wishes and the fear of repeating her mother’s painful history. Like! My First Story — Enjoy! Courage was a woman in her mid-thirties — successful, brilliant, and beautiful. Yet beneath her polished exterior lived a heart scarred by bitter experiences, fiercely guarded by a deep fear of God and a lifetime of hard-earned lessons. Throughout her life, she preserved her virginity, clinging tightly to the words her mother had etched into her soul: "Courage, uphold your virtue. Unserious men only care about what’s between your legs. Once they get what they want, they'll leave you — heartbroken, or worse, left raising a child alone." These weren’t just empty warnings; they were her mother's testimony. Courage had grown up watching her mother hustle through life alone, juggling three jobs just to put food on the table after being abandoned by the man she once loved. The memory of her mother's tired smiles and quiet struggles was stitched into every decision Courage made. She wasn’t naïve when it came to love. She had tried. She had hoped. But life, time and again, handed her bitter lessons. Her first love, Efe, came during her university days. They met in church, served together in the same ministry, and shared countless dreams about their future. Efe had promised her heaven and earth, painting vivid pictures of a life filled with love, children, and laughter. "Courage," he would say, holding her hand tightly after fellowship meetings, "you and I are destiny partners. We'll serve God together, raise godly children. I can't wait to call you my wife." At first, it was everything she had prayed for. But Efe struggled with one thing: patience. He found it strange — even frustrating — that a beautiful, smart woman like Courage insisted on remaining a virgin. At first, he laughed it off, believing she would eventually give in. But two years passed, and Courage stood firm. The relationship ended painfully when word spread that Efe had impregnated a girl from the church choir. To be continued Story by Tejiri Treasure. O. |
