The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu has asked his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart Atiku Abubakar to step down and endorse him (Tinubu) ahead of February 2023 presidential poll. 

Tinubu asked Atiku to reciprocate the “gesture” he gave to him when he contested for the presidency in 2007 under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) by dropping his ambition and endorse him.

Tinubu spoke on Monday when he met with leaders from the northern part of the country under the umbrella of Arewa Joint Committee for an interactive session.

The meeting was part of a wider interaction with selected presidential candidates to discuss their plans for the region ahead of the 2023 general elections.


The appearance of the APC presidential candidate came two days after his rival in the PDP engaged in similar interaction with the northern leaders.

The interactive session held at the Arewa House in Kaduna was organised by a coalition of six groups from the North including the Arewa Consultative Forum, Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation,, Northern Elders Forum, Jamar Matan Arewa among others.

The narrative that former President Goodluck Jonathan has endorsed the Atiku/Okowa presidential ticket is false after all, as indications have emerged that some hawks in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stage-managed the meeting to achieve a pre-determined phantom endorsement.

The development came amid information that Jonathan has a soft spot for the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi who he has severally supported morally and otherwise ahead of 2023 general election.

A close ally of the former president who was at the recent courtesy visit facilitated by the Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, told Daily Sun that Jonathan is not happy that the PDP turned the private visit into an endorsement for its presidential candidate.

He said journalists were not allowed to witness the private visit and conversation unknown to the host (Jonathan) that some of the PDP hawks secretly videoed the proceeding and posted it online to appear as if the former president had endorsed Atiku.

Our source said President Jonathan is a statesman who extends equal gestures to all the presidential candidates, hence, the event where he prayed for Okowa was not different.

He explained that the visitors led by the Bauchi governor brought some kola nuts for Jonathan to according to them, pray for the incoming vice president (Okowa) and that the former president merely used their own words to pray for him.

Our source told Daily Sun: “You know that President Jonathan has a soft spot for the Bauchi governor who led the delegation. Atiku who had made several efforts to get Jonathan’s support was not even part of the delegation.

“Jonathan was surprised when his attention was drawn to the news on the social media that he had endorsed Atiku. That did not happen but as a statesman, he just let it go instead of putting up a statement denying it.

“ It was to forestall the PDP making a political capital of the visit that Jonathan’s aides prevented the media from being in the meeting but who knew that some hawks in the party had planned to use it to gain some mileage.”

Our source told Daily Sun if there was any presidential candidate that enjoys the support of the former president, it is Peter Obi.

He said that the LP candidate had visited Jonathan at least three times since the conclusion of the party primaries unlike candidates of other parties.

“You know that Obi is very close to Jonathan for obvious reasons. When Oga was in power, Obi was one of those close to him and they have continued to enjoy the relationship till now. I am sure that is why many people are surprised when they started to read that he has endorsed Atiku/Okowa ticket. Jonathan is a statesman and he treats all the presidential candidates with respect but people should not misunderstand that as an endorsement”, he said.

Ademola Adeleke Transition Committee, has alleged that the Osun State government has concluded an arrangement to award capital projects up to the tune of N30 billion to their cronies in violation of due process and procurement needs of the state.

This was revealed in a statement by Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the committee said, “It has come to the attention of the Ademola Adeleke Transition Committee that the outgoing administration of Mr Gboyega Oyetola has concluded arrangement to award capital projects up to the tune of N30 billion to their cronies in violation of due process and procurement needs of the state.

Reliable reports from inside the administration revealed that the various pony projects are being assembled across the ministries with many cases of contract splitting, illegal application of selective tendering, upfront payment even before contract awards and a deliberate disregard for extant procurement laws.

According to him, “Aside from all other alerts we have issued as a responsible incoming administration, the new round of illegal contracts were reportedly authorised and with the full knowledge of the outgoing governor with the sole goal of bankrupting the state and complicating any efforts by the incoming government to rest the state on sustainable financial footing.

“We want to repeat for the umpteenth time that no leader has the right to breach the procurement laws and due process requirements a few weeks before the expiration of his or her tenure of office. What is occurring within the Osun state government is a concerted decision to loot our common patrimony due to a vengeful mind-set to punish the people of Osun State for overwhelmingly voting for Senator Ademola Adeleke.

“To those hell-bent on financially strangulating Osun state, we make bold to assert that no looted assets and the fund will be left unrecovered.”

Prof Chris Imumolen, Presidential Candidate of Accord Party, has criticised the economic plan of Peter Obi, flagbearer of Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking during the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) conference in Lagos earlier in the week, Immumolen tackled Obi during a debate at the event.2023: Nigeria’s problems beyond a 70-year-old president.

The apex accounting body had invited candidates jostling for the country’s number one seat  to the event to speak on their manifestos and state how they planned to get the country out of the woods.

In his speech entitled: “Accounting As A Requisite For Sustainable Governance”, Obi  had said, “As President, one of my priorities will rule of law and due diligence, and promoting intangible assets, which are vital components of holistic security. This will also underpin public sector accountability.

“We will abide by the Fiscal responsibility laws. All arms of government will be subject to routine audit this is the only way to ascertain the veracity of procurement figures, recurrent and concurrent expenses, even constituency projects.”

He also spoke on his economic plan and narrated his approach to some other areas if he is elected.

When he mounted the podium, Professor Imumolen, who is the youngest presidential candidate, said Obi’s economic plan is solely hinged on agriculture, and nothing else.

“I would like to disagree with my friend, Mr Peter Obi that investment in agriculture is the only way to transform Nigeria’s economy to a productive one,” Professor Imumolen said in his opening statement.

“I would rather emphasise on human capacity development, technology, creating enabling business policies that would encourage foreign direct investment in our economy, power and infrastructural development, as well as ensuring the security of everyone, both of Nigerians and visitors into Nigeria.

“These are the things I would do, rather than concentrating only on agriculture if elected as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2023,” he said.

Delta State governor and running mate to PDP’s Atiku Abubukar, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa; African Action Congress (AAC) candidate, Omoyele Sowore, All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA’s) candidate, Professor Peter Umeadi and vice presidential candidate to Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Bishop Isaac Idahosa; were among those at the event.

Neither Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) nor Senator Kashim Shettima, his running mate, were at the event.

The Zamfara Government, on Friday announced a total lockdown in Anka, Bukkuyum and Gummi Local Government Areas (LGAs) following the resurgence of bandit attacks on communities.

The lockdown is contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Ibrahim Dosara on Friday in Gusau.

”The government announces a lockdown in nine major towns to stop the spate of the attacks on such communities in the affected areas.

”These are Yarkofoji, Birnin Tudu, Rini, Gora Namaye, Janbako, Faru, Kaya, Boko and Mada towns.

”Government also announced the closing down of markets in Danjibga and Bagega as well as Colony to Lambar Boko Road, Bakura to Lambar Damri Road and Mayanchi- Daki Takwas to Gummi Road.

”Others are the Daki Takwas to Zuru Road, Kucheri- Bawaganga – Wanke Road, Magami to Dangulbi Road and Gusau to Magami Road.

‘The measures were taken to facilitate the efforts of security operatives in flushing out criminal elements in those areas,” the government said.

Gov. Bello Matawalle also ordered the immediate suspension of all APC meetings and activities as part of his government concern and sympathy to the affected people and communities.

“Stakeholders invited for the Friday APC Stakeholders’ Meeting are hereby advised to hold on for a new date for the meeting.

“Furthermore, government has suspended all political activities in the state till further notice.

“Political meetings and gatherings at individual residences are also banned with immediate effect,” Dosara added.

The state government said the decision is without prejudice to anyone, is intended to arrest the situation before it went out of control.

“Government is saddened and worried about the re-surgence of the activities of bandits and the recent killings of some innocent people in Gusau, Tsafe, Gummi, Bukkuyum, Anka Bungudu, Maru, Maradun and Kaura Namoda local government areas.

“Government is also touched by the killings of some of our gallant security operatives who lost their lives in our defense.

“Government therefore, condoled with the families of the victims of the bandits’ attacks and prayed for the repose of the departed souls”.

The state government directed security operatives to deal with those found violating the orders.

The spokesperson for the Atiku-Okowa Presidential Campaign Council, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Wednesday, said unlike other presidential aspirants, the Peoples Democratic Party flagbarer, Atiku Abubakar, was not a learner on the job.

He said the anguish and pains Nigerians are experiencing under the All Progressives Congress government will seize when Atiku becomes Nigeria’s president on May 29, 2023.

Ologbondiyan gave the assurance during an interaction with some PDP youths in Abuja.

He pointed out that the PDP and Atiku were worried about the pains and sufferings the APC has inflicted on Nigerians in the last seven years.

He noted that the crowd that attended the party’s presidential campaign flag-off in Uyo, including other venues, was an indication of the approval of the Atiku/Okowa presidency in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election.

He said, “Among the arrays of presidential candidates, only Atiku Abubakar has the practicable plan on how to end the pains, the hunger, the starvation, the economic woes, the lower purchasing power and the sense of hopelessness which the APC administration has brought upon Nigerians.

“Atiku Abubakar has the experience of office, unlike the learners on parade, having been the Chairman of the National Economic Council. Nigerians can recall that those years, between 1999-2007, were the glorious years of our nation when we achieved unprecedented economic growth.

“In those years that Presidents elected on the platform of the PDP governed, life had meaning as our naira had value against foreign denominations; purchasing power was high; teachers had access to repayable loans and could build comfortable accommodation while those who desired to buy cars could afford them.”

He urged Nigerians not to vote for those who, within seven years, pulled the country from the “top to the bottom” among the comity of nations.

He urged Nigerians to continue to support the PDP and its candidates, adding that the party has solutions to the multitude of issues bedevilling the nation.

Several killing happened in Lagos both from policemen and civilians alike. There are several people that died across Lagos and when Sanwoolu spoke of mortuaries, he is speaking as a whole.

People are just focusing only on Lekki because they want to sell an agenda. If they had focused more on the killings that happened in the mainland, that will be justified.
