TRADITIONAL rulers in Idemili North and South Local Government Area of Anambra State, over the weekend, says they are comfortable supporting the Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, in 2023 general election. 

The monarchs, said they are behind Atiku and his party, PDP because of the continued support they are enjoying from Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, who is the Director of the People Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council and a Chieftain of the party in the state. 

According to the chairman, Idemili North and South Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe CC Agbala, who spoke on behalf of the Council, during an interactive meeting held at Ogidi, the Headquarters of Idemili North, with Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, the support is for the interest of Ndi-Igbo too. 

“For Okonkwo, “We have no doubts about your pedigree, capacity, and leadership contribution, as demonstrated in your submission. You’re our son and will always enjoy our support. 

“The interest we have is the interest of Ndi Igbo, and we have seen you have such an interest too. We can no longer continue in opposition as a region; we have endured enough and must get our region back to National politics. We have resolved that our votes in Idemili must be strategic and we will use them where it will bring us political relevance. You’ve got our support and blessings. 

“You have our unalloyed support and blessings. “With you, we are comfortable supporting Atiku Abubakar’s Presidency knowing that you have a record of always standing in the line of progress, development, and stability.

“We will queue behind you to give the necessary support and hope that his (Atiku), victory will bring prosperity to the South East

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has kicked against redesigning of the naira by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), describing it as economic suicide for Nigerians, especially rural dwellers.

According to him, 80 percent of Nigerians especially rural people, depend on cash transactions.

In a statement titled: “[b]Changing the Naira: This is no time for economic kamikaze!”, Gumi said any policy that  will cause more cash crunch will be a disaster for the nation.[/b]

He further explained that the policy will not starve kidnappers of cash because they may decide to demand for dollars and other currencies to make life more harder to the people.

“People that sell goods will tell you that most Nigerians don’t have the money to buy things; therefore most traders are running at a loss and are already folding up. At this junction, anything that can cause more cash crunch will be a disaster for the nation.

“Many good ideas are marred by wrong timing. This is likely to be another one. No matter how ingenious the hatchers may romanticize; the benefit will remain phantom since the reality on the ground is incongruous and it spells doom for the escapade.

“Eighty percent of Nigerians especially rural people depend on cash transactions. A sudden change to a cashless or cash-starved society will mean pauperizing them in a spate of a short time that could trigger – God Knows- an unprecedented socio-economic turmoil in this semi-skilled or unskilled population.

“This kind of program is not for a government that is in the throes of its demise. If there is any advantage of such adventures, it usually comes after many years of excruciating poverty and hardship which no well-meaning government should hand over such cruelty to another incoming government to manage.

“Had it been started in 2015, it could be logical since the same government will bear the consequence of its action. We are a witness when the banning of motorcycles, sell of petrol and the blockage of communication in banditry-infested states did not help to curb the menace but rather made the populace suffer the more. This clearly shows that the government doesn’t consider the pros and cons of its activities which are largely haphazard, not well thought through, and worst still clumsily executed.

“Mopping the cash from the populace as it claims to swell commercial banks will give an unfair advantage to a few people that control the banks against the greater population. As for the North which is poorly represented in the banking system, it’s a sure economic suicide.

“How many Nigerians have access to banks? How many do have the privilege to enjoy the most simple of banking loans? You need to know someone to get a loan is no news. In such a Nigeria, with this tight control of cash flow, the nation is treading towards communism and dictatorship.

“What we need is a free market-driven economy with minimal cash flow control. As for the question of starving kidnappers of Naira, it goes without saying that they will resort to Dollars and other hard currencies which will further put more pressure on it making the rotten situation bad-der.

“kidnapping can only be stopped by robust policing, social justice for all, and equitable wealth distribution. Any cosmetic measures will not stop it.May Allah open our eyes and prevent us from jumping from frying pan to fire. Amin,” he said.

In what appeared to be a continuation of their sustained inter-rivalry clash, the fighters of the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) at the weekend attacked the enclaves of Boko Haram, during which six of them were reportedly killed.

ISWAP had in a silent operation stormed the home of Boko Haram insurgents in Gajibo, a town 95km northeast of Maiduguri, Borno State capital and slaughtered six whom they declared as “infidels”.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in Lake Chad, the attackers also recovered five AK47 riffles from the Boko Haram terrorists.

ISWAP had carried out many successful attacks against Boko Haram terrorists in its sustained feuds, which caused the group a huge casualty and loss of war assets.

The worsening of inter-rivalry clashes, between jihadist groups, may lead them to irreversible self-destruction as the revolting ISWAP had vowed to battle more with members of its former main body than even with the Nigerian troops.

Atiku praised PDP days in power.

The same Atiku handicapped PDP when he took a fraction - nPDP - out of PDP in 2015, joined APC, in his eternal drive for power to return to his northern region. President GEJ's PDP lost the election because of Atiku's betrayal.
Atiku is still on his struggle to make power remain in his north, that's why he jumped into PDP presidential primaries in 2022 to preempt any possibility of a southerner in PDP emerging successor to President Buhari.
