TravelBad Roads: North-East Governors To Float Commercial Airline by treesun(op): 7:48pm On Sep 16, 2022
Borno State Governor, Prof. Umaru Zulum, has said plans are being concluded by governors from the North-East to establish a commercial airline for the region.

Zulum who doubles as Chairman, North-East Governors’ Forum, made this disclosure on Friday while declaring its seventh meeting open.

The regional carrier, the governor said, would help to expand the business frontiers of the North-East after years of insecurity that has stalled development in the region.

“Our decision to float a commercial airline, known as the North-East Regional Air Shuttle Limited, for the region is also coming to fruition as soon as a number of financial and technical requirements are met,” Zulum said.

The governor also decried the state of disrepair of Federal Government roads in the North-East.

He lamented the impact of insurgency which had bedevilled the region, urging the National Assembly for improved budgetary allocation for the region to aid reconstruction.

“At this juncture, I need to however make a passionate appeal to the Federal Government and the National Assembly to incorporate into the 2023 budget of the Federal Government the reconstruction and rehabilitation of many federal roads in the North-East region, which have been in deplorable condition for years.

“Although the level of insecurity in the region then was a tenable reason for delaying the reconstruction of the roads, the security situation now has improved tremendously. As it is now, the North-East has the least Federal budget allocation for road construction and it is fair and reasonable for the Federal Government to inject the needed funds for the construction and reconstruction of federal roads within the region. So on behalf of my colleagues, I am calling on the National Assembly, particularly the Senators and Representatives from the North-East zone to, as a matter of urgent priority, include the repairs and construction of a network of Federal roads within the zone,” Zulum said.

Speaking earlier, Gombe State Governor, Muhammad Yahaya, explained that the essence of it meeting which is about two years old was “to take stock and reflect on successes since the creation. For a common front irrespective of cultural and ethnic difference to pursue a common vision towards improving lives of citizens of the sub-region.”

Yahaya disclosed that those challenges that led to the establishment of the forum are still plaguing the region.

“Boko Haram, security threats, climate change disasters,” he added.

While lauding the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), for efforts in curbing the security challenges, Yahaya also commended the partnership of security agencies.

Politics2023: Ensure Outcome Of Election Reflects People’s Desire – Atiku Tells INEC by treesun(op): 11:19am On Sep 16, 2022
Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the outcome of the 2023 general elections reflects the desire of the people.

Abubakar made the appeal in a statement by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, in Abuja on Thursday on the occasion marking the International Day for Democracy.

Abubakar urged INEC and other agencies of government playing roles in the electoral process to ensure that the outcome of the election was a true reflection of the desires of the people.

The PDP presidential flagbearer said that the celebration of democracy was, indeed, a celebration of the people’s power.

He said that although there had been significant improvements in the processes that elections were conducted in Nigeria, “the 2023 episode was an opportunity for INEC to show that the commission had grown beyond partisanship,” he noted.

“In 2023, Nigerians will be voting for the leadership that they truly believe will lead this country out of the current dire situation.

“It is important to use the opportunity of the celebration, this day, to tell not just the INEC, but other agencies and non-governmental organisations involved in the conduct of election, that the next election should be the freest and fairest ever in the history of Nigeria.”

Abubakar congratulated Nigerians on being part of the global community of people practising democracy.

The former vice president reminded the electorate in Nigeria to remember that democracy was an enabler of good governance.

“Good governance is the ultimate end game.

“And the democracy that we practise is the only veritable vehicle that can drive us safely to the establishment of a government that will give us good governance and ensure that the rule of law is entrenched in our body politics,” Atiku said.

He pledged that if elected, under his watch, press freedom and a fundamental foundation of democracy, would be guaranteed.

“A free, robust and unencumbered press is key to nurturing democracy and development,” he added.

PoliticsBuhari, APC Have Kept Promise Of Relegating Nigeria – Ortom by treesun(op): 10:33am On Sep 14, 2022
The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has indicted the President, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and his ruling All Progressives Congress for keeping their promise of relegating the country in their manifesto to Nigerians.

In a statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur, Ortom said, “As a people, Nigerians need to have a viable alternative to the current crop of leaders among the ruling party.”

Ortom noted that the APC would lose the elections in 2023 because the party had performed abysmally in the past seven years since it took over power from the Peoples Democratic Party.

“They (APC) have kept their promise to take Nigeria from top to bottom. They have taken our country beneath the bottom. It’s a big shame. For us in the PDP, the onus rests on us to mend the cracks in our party. No external influence will do that for us. By the grace of God, we will reach a successful end so that we can move on,” he added.

Speaking on the issues and challenges that may arise in the forthcoming elections, Ortom said it was important for the Independent National Electoral Commission to remain unbiased and professional.

He maintained citing examples in the just concluded Ekiti and Osun states’ elections, justifying the processes while charging the commission to stick to the rules of engagement in the 2023 general election.

“So long as INEC is as professional and neutral as it was in Osun and Ekiti states, I don’t see the APC winning the elections,” he said.

Ortom said his over 40 years of experience in grassroots politics and even at the state and national levels had shown that the APC cannot win the 2023 polls.
