European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Tottenham Hotspur Vs Manchester City 05-02-2023 17:30 by treesun(op):
Having both suffered respective derby defeats at the weekend, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur aim to bounce back in a Premier League clash of the titans at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday evening.

Pep Guardiola's men suffered a 2-1 loss to Manchester United last time out, while the Lilywhites were comprehensively beaten 2-0 by North London rivals Arsenal.

Boldly claiming that he "does not care" about the destiny of the Premier League title as his side fall further adrift of the Mikel Arteta-led Arsenal, Pep Guardiola could have arguably felt hard done by at Old Trafford, where Man United came back from a goal behind to close the gap on their noisy neighbours.

Jack Grealish headed home to put the champions in the ascendancy, but after Marcus Rashford was controversially deemed not to have been interfering with play from an offside position, Bruno Fernandes swept home before Rashford completed the turnaround late on.

Having entered the rare territory of back-to-back defeats - also going out of their prized EFL Cup at the hands of Southampton last week - Man City remain second in the rankings but are now eight points adrift of Arsenal on the same number of games, although they will temporarily reduce that gap to five with success on Thursday.

However, Man United and Newcastle United are now only one point behind City, who could even drop to third if the Red Devils overcome Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, but the wounded champions are normally a force to be reckoned with on their own turf following a humbling loss.

Then again, the hosts have failed to beat Brentford and Everton in their last two at the Etihad - having won 11 top-flight games in a row on home soil beforehand - but only once has Guardiola ever gone three home games without a league win as manager, which came all the way back in December 2016.

The President also inaugurated the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA)-funded 10MW Haske Solar Plant in a 24-hectare land in Kumbotso Local Government of Kano State.

The plant, which links industrial customers to an additional power supply, represents a significant step towards efforts to provide clean, reliable, and sustainable energy for all Nigerians.

The 10MW plant is the largest completed solar plant in Nigeria and the first under the NSIA renewable energy platform.

He also commissioned the Family Homes Funds Estate, Darmanawa, Kano, which consists of 469 affordable housing units with ancillary infrastructure.

PoliticsGovt Appointments Lopsided, Lack Merit – Obasanjo by treesun(op): 1:54pm On Jan 30, 2023
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said Nigeria is staring disunity in the face because many leaders are more concerned about their selfish interests than the survival and health of the nation.

This is just as he regretted that appointments in government are skewed and lopsided on basis of nepotism and mediocrity and disregard for merit and competence

He said politicians and political parties were trampling on many of the things put in place to give all groups in the country a sense of belonging.

Obasanjo said this while delivering his remarks titled, ‘The Quest For Unity In Nigeria And The Role Of Unity Schools,’ at the 50th anniversary of Federal Government College, Kaduna, on Saturday.

He said, “First, I am concerned that the current state of our nation’s economy has widened the gulf of inequality and left many people in despair. Inflation is on the rise; poverty and hardship have returned to many households. The last decade has reversed many of the economic gains that were made in the first decade of the century. There is a general sense of hopelessness across the nation with seemingly uncontrollable insecurity.

“In addition to the economic hardship is political mischief. Never have we been so politically divided along religious, ethnic and other fault lines and deliberately so. Appointments in government are skewed and lopsided on basis of nepotism and mediocrity and disregard for merit and competence. Elections are here and may compound the problem.

“Political parties and politicians have now been emboldened to discard some of the things that were put in place to give all groups a sense of belonging. Exclusion is being taken as normal. Disunity stares us in the face and many of our leaders are more concerned about their selfish interests than the survival and health of our nation.

“Let me reiterate that the concerns being raised about the nature of the options before us in the Presidential elections for instance are real and should not be trifled with.

“Nigeria belongs to us all and no part of the country should be left in doubt about their place in this union on any basis whatsoever; ethnic, religious, language, region, culture or social standing.”

Obasanjo said the beauty of democracy is that before Nigerians cannot be imposed on them.

“If we choose to do nothing, we will only have ourselves to blame. If we choose to do the right thing, we will by so doing return this country on the right track; one which gives all our people a sense of belonging and a sense of unity of purpose and a stake in the project Nigeria; a project that will give all of us peace, security, stability, shared prosperity, hope and progress and a place within the comity of nations,” he said.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the Presidency was unsuccessful as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, did not respond to calls or messages sent to him.

PoliticsOsun Tribunal Decision ‘black Market’ Judgment – CUPP by treesun(op): 5:01pm On Jan 27, 2023
The Coalition of United Political Parties on Friday rejected the verdict of the Osun State governorship election petitions tribunal which sacked governor Ademola Adeleke, describing it as a “black market purchased judgment”.

A statement issued on Friday by the Co-National Spokesperson for CUPP, Mark Adebayo, however, expressed optimism that justice would be done.

He said, “We are not perturbed because justice will eventually be done on this case. The same way that fuel scarcity is biting hard across the country and motorists have to resort to the black market to buy fuel is the same way that we consider this judgment as a black market purchased judgment that we are confident will eventually be overturned by higher courts.

“It is a temporary attempt to rob the Osun State people of their sovereign will and the judicial processes through its remedial mechanisms will do real justice to correct this anomalous injustice in the name of judgement. That it was a split decision judgment says a lot about its lack of merit.

“The mandate willfully given by the Osun State people to Governor Adeleke remains intact and any attempt to steal it will fail woefully.”

The abducted Sole Administrator of the Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, Chris Ohizu, has been beheaded.

The council boss was butchered on Sunday after his abductors allegedly received N6 million as ransom.

Video of his beheading surfaced online on Sunday, where his killers insisted that there would be no election in the country.

A source from the LGA, who did not want to be named, disclosed that the killers of the sole administrator published videos of the beheading with the phone of their victim on his WhatsApp status.

The source said, The sole administrator has been beheaded. We saw videos of how he was being beheaded on Sunday. His killers posted it with his phone on his own WhatsApp status. That was how people got to know that he was beheaded.

“The videos were horrible. He was tied and half naked before he was beheaded. That was a painful way to die. They butchered him after collecting N6 million ransom.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the police in the state, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident and simply said “investigation is ongoing.”

The slain sole administrator was kidnapped on Friday alongside two others after burning his country home at Imoko community in the Arondizuogu area of the LGA.

He was shot before he was taken away.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Manchester City Vs Wolves 22-01-2023 3pm by treesun(op): 6:17pm On Jan 20, 2023
A Manchester City team criticised by Pep Guardiola hope to ramp up the pressure on Arsenal in Sunday’s earlier Premier League kick-off.

The champions could close the gap to just two points, albeit having played one more game than Mikel Arteta’s side, should they overcome the challenge of Wolves at the Etihad Stadium.

Wolves, meanwhile, got a big win against relegation rivals West Ham last time out, albeit that was followed up by a disappointing loss to a rotated Liverpool side in the FA Cup.

Still, this is a squad packed full of international talent and the arrival of Pablo Sarabia adds another exciting option in attack. Slowly but surely showing signs of progress under the stewardship of Julen Lopetegui, it feels as if a big performance is coming.

Here’s everything you need to know about the game.

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, will not be retiring when he turns 60 years on March 1, 2023, the Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Dingyadi, said on Wednesday.

Dingyadi’s comments followed fresh concerns about the IGP’s possible retirement amidst the 2023 elections.

Baba turns 60 on March 1, 2023; four days after the presidential election and 10 days before the governorship elections holding on February 25 and March 11, respectively.

According to the minister, the Police Act 2020 gives the IGP a four-year tenure which cannot be interrupted by retirement age.

Responding to a question from our correspondent on whether or not the IGP would retire at 60 like other civil servants, Dingyadi said, Let me say that by the provision of the Police Act 2020, the IG is now supposed to have a kind of four-year period and Mr. President has already given him letter of appointment in that regard.

So the issue of IG going out during this election period does not arise.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), appointed the then-DIG Baba as the acting IGP on April 6, 2021.

Two months later, the Police Council confirmed him as the substantive head of the Force.

At least 290 senior officers are expected to retire from service between January and March 2023, findings show.

They include three Deputy Inspectors-General and scores of Assistant Inspectors-General, 10 Commissioners of Police, five Deputy Commissioners of Police, over 20 Assistant Commissioners of Police, more than 35 Chief Superintendents of Police, 47 Superintendents of Police, 55 Deputy Superintendents of Police and 70 Assistant Superintendents of Police.

Dingyadi also revealed that the FEC approved a draft bill for an Act to establish Nigeria Police Force College Training School and Institutions.

He said the piece of legislation will only give legal backing to about 20 existing training institutions nationwide, and not to build new ones.

Following the burning of a Catholic priest in Kafin-Koro in the Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State, aggrieved women and youths on Tuesday burnt down the Kafin-Koro Police Station.

A resident of the community, who identified himself only as Jonathan for security reasons, said the ECWA and Catholic women groups had converged on the premises of the burnt parish around 7am on Tuesday to pray against those who lynched the priest.

“As the women were praying, some policemen arrived that they were a detachment from the Kafin-Koro Police Division drafted to the church to provide protection for the praying women.

“The women rejected the protection and requested that the police should leave because the police did not provide protection for the dead priest neither did they show up on time when they were called,” he added.

Jonathan explained that when the policemen refused to leave the residence of the late priest, the women threw stones and sachet water at them.

“After the prayers, the women were joined by some youths to march peacefully through the major road of the town to the police division, singing anti-police songs to register their grievances, as they asked the police to leave the town since their presence was of no security value to the community.

“As the police were trying to disperse the crowd, the police began shooting into the air and one of the bullets hit a man, who died immediately. That was how the protest turned violent,” he added.

The eyewitness said the irate youths subsequently set the police division on fire.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident.

He said, “On January 17, 2023, around 9am, some angry youths of Kafin-Koro District, Paikoro LGA, mobilised and protested in Kafin-Koro town over the killing of the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Isaac.

“During the protest, the rampaging youths attacked and set Kaffin-Koro Divisional Police Headquarters ablaze.”

Manchester City will be hoping that lightning does not strike twice when Harry Kane and Tottenham lace up their boots at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night.

Following a failed pursuit to sign the England captain last summer, Kane inevitably settled the scores with a brace against the eventual Premier League champions. That came in the most dramatic circumstances, too, as both sides netted in injury-time as Tottenham won to blow the title race wide open.

Tottenham had suffered three straight defeats before their February trip to Manchester at a slightly later juncture last season, but the proverbial form book went out the window as Kane put the Londoners in front - twice - either side of a 92nd-minute Riyad Mahrez penalty that looked to have given City a point.

As it transpired, Kane had the final say as Guardiola sat back and pondered what might have been, not only on the pitch but in the transfer market, as well. Fast forward 11 months and City have their own goalscoring powerhouse in Erling Haaland, while they did hold on to claim another Premier League trophy.

Still, the parallels will not be lost on Guardiola and Kane this coming Thursday night as they collide, once more, with important matters on the line - and Tottenham with their backs firmly against the wall. But what will Guardiola do to combat opponents he (infamously) previously referred to as 'the Harry Kane team'?
PoliticsTinubu-SDP Alliance Is Real And Unstoppable — SDP by treesun(op): 7:20pm On Jan 16, 2023
The Social Democratic Party has reiterated that the proposed alliance deal between the SDP and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is real and unstoppable.

The SDP disclosed this through a statement on Monday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Alfa Muhammad, although, the factional SDP last week disowned an alliance deal between Tinubu and the party.

The party’s spokesperson noted however, that “the much trumpeted Tinubu-SDP proposed alliance deal is real and unstoppable. It is a plan ‘B’ option conceived since year 2020 by the authentic leaders of the SDP, to make sure that Nigerians never miss the treasure of having Asiwaju Tinubu as their next president.

“The agenda, which is known and popular amongst the elected (not appointed) national executive members of the SDP and stakeholders is not well known to the denying Jerry Gana boys, because they are strangers who joined the party just ‘yesterday’ along with Jerry Gana who has since returned to PDP but stayed behind to allegedly destabilise our party, and thus knows little or nothing about the party’s structures and agenda.”

The spokesperson therefore advised the public to ignore the faction, saying their fake claim to the party’s leadership would soon be put to an end by the Federal High Court.

He added, “We will address Nigerians on the subject fully shortly.”

PoliticsNigeria Records Highest Oil Production Since April 2022 — Report by treesun(op): 12:23pm On Jan 13, 2023
In December 2022, Nigeria recorded her highest oil production since April 2022, the latest Platts survey by S&P Global Commodity Insights has revealed.

The country’s oil production has been faced with oil theft that has hampered exports and resulted in significant oil spills and loss of millions of naira.

However, the survey released on Wednesday showed that Nigeria’s volumes rebounded to the highest since April of 2022, producing 1.33 million b/d in December, contributing significantly to OPEC’s increased oil production in the period.

OPEC and its allies increased crude oil production by 140,000 b/d as OPEC’s 13 countries pumped 28.98 million b/d in December, an increase of 110,000 b/d from November, led by Nigeria, while 10 non-OPEC partners including Russia added 13.73 million b/d, a rise of 30,000 b/d.

When combined, the alliance produced 42.71 million b/d in December alone.

The survey further highlighted that Nigeria saw major recoveries in its loadings of major grades Forcados and Brass River, while maintenance at the Bonga Field was completed in mid-November.

However, the report added that despite the overall increase, the alliance’s output still massively lags in its production targets, with the gap at 1.80 million b/d in December, adding that most members face technical or financial difficulties in sustaining output.

Meanwhile, recent data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission showed that Forcados had a crude oil production rate of 6,579,692, a condensate rate of 593,980, and a blended total of 7,173,672 barrels for December 2022, as opposed to a blended total of 6,856,88 recorded for November 2022.

Brass, on the other hand, had a crude oil production rate of 581,198, a condensate rate of 45,010 and a blended total of 626,208 for December 2022, as opposed to a blended total of 431,672 recorded for November 2022.

During a forum on January 11, 2023, however, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, said that the country could achieve a 2.2 million barrels per day crude oil production output in 2023.

He said, “For us, we see a trajectory of restoring production including condensates within the year. We believe we can hit a target of 2.2 mb/d but our budget target is 1.8 mb/d, but we know that it is practical to do 2.2 mb/d within 2023.”
