Having both suffered respective derby defeats at the weekend, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur aim to bounce back in a Premier League clash of the titans at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday evening. Pep Guardiola's men suffered a 2-1 loss to Manchester United last time out, while the Lilywhites were comprehensively beaten 2-0 by North London rivals Arsenal. Boldly claiming that he "does not care" about the destiny of the Premier League title as his side fall further adrift of the Mikel Arteta-led Arsenal, Pep Guardiola could have arguably felt hard done by at Old Trafford, where Man United came back from a goal behind to close the gap on their noisy neighbours. Jack Grealish headed home to put the champions in the ascendancy, but after Marcus Rashford was controversially deemed not to have been interfering with play from an offside position, Bruno Fernandes swept home before Rashford completed the turnaround late on. Having entered the rare territory of back-to-back defeats - also going out of their prized EFL Cup at the hands of Southampton last week - Man City remain second in the rankings but are now eight points adrift of Arsenal on the same number of games, although they will temporarily reduce that gap to five with success on Thursday. However, Man United and Newcastle United are now only one point behind City, who could even drop to third if the Red Devils overcome Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, but the wounded champions are normally a force to be reckoned with on their own turf following a humbling loss. Then again, the hosts have failed to beat Brentford and Everton in their last two at the Etihad - having won 11 top-flight games in a row on home soil beforehand - but only once has Guardiola ever gone three home games without a league win as manager, which came all the way back in December 2016. |

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said Nigeria is staring disunity in the face because many leaders are more concerned about their selfish interests than the survival and health of the nation. This is just as he regretted that appointments in government are skewed and lopsided on basis of nepotism and mediocrity and disregard for merit and competence He said politicians and political parties were trampling on many of the things put in place to give all groups in the country a sense of belonging. Obasanjo said this while delivering his remarks titled, ‘The Quest For Unity In Nigeria And The Role Of Unity Schools,’ at the 50th anniversary of Federal Government College, Kaduna, on Saturday. He said, “First, I am concerned that the current state of our nation’s economy has widened the gulf of inequality and left many people in despair. Inflation is on the rise; poverty and hardship have returned to many households. The last decade has reversed many of the economic gains that were made in the first decade of the century. There is a general sense of hopelessness across the nation with seemingly uncontrollable insecurity. “In addition to the economic hardship is political mischief. Never have we been so politically divided along religious, ethnic and other fault lines and deliberately so. Appointments in government are skewed and lopsided on basis of nepotism and mediocrity and disregard for merit and competence. Elections are here and may compound the problem. “Political parties and politicians have now been emboldened to discard some of the things that were put in place to give all groups a sense of belonging. Exclusion is being taken as normal. Disunity stares us in the face and many of our leaders are more concerned about their selfish interests than the survival and health of our nation. “Let me reiterate that the concerns being raised about the nature of the options before us in the Presidential elections for instance are real and should not be trifled with. “Nigeria belongs to us all and no part of the country should be left in doubt about their place in this union on any basis whatsoever; ethnic, religious, language, region, culture or social standing.” Obasanjo said the beauty of democracy is that before Nigerians cannot be imposed on them. “If we choose to do nothing, we will only have ourselves to blame. If we choose to do the right thing, we will by so doing return this country on the right track; one which gives all our people a sense of belonging and a sense of unity of purpose and a stake in the project Nigeria; a project that will give all of us peace, security, stability, shared prosperity, hope and progress and a place within the comity of nations,” he said. As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the Presidency was unsuccessful as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, did not respond to calls or messages sent to him. https://punchng.com/govt-appointments-lopsided-lack-merit-obasanjo/ |

A Manchester City team criticised by Pep Guardiola hope to ramp up the pressure on Arsenal in Sunday’s earlier Premier League kick-off. The champions could close the gap to just two points, albeit having played one more game than Mikel Arteta’s side, should they overcome the challenge of Wolves at the Etihad Stadium. Wolves, meanwhile, got a big win against relegation rivals West Ham last time out, albeit that was followed up by a disappointing loss to a rotated Liverpool side in the FA Cup. Still, this is a squad packed full of international talent and the arrival of Pablo Sarabia adds another exciting option in attack. Slowly but surely showing signs of progress under the stewardship of Julen Lopetegui, it feels as if a big performance is coming. Here’s everything you need to know about the game. |

Following the burning of a Catholic priest in Kafin-Koro in the Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State, aggrieved women and youths on Tuesday burnt down the Kafin-Koro Police Station. A resident of the community, who identified himself only as Jonathan for security reasons, said the ECWA and Catholic women groups had converged on the premises of the burnt parish around 7am on Tuesday to pray against those who lynched the priest. “As the women were praying, some policemen arrived that they were a detachment from the Kafin-Koro Police Division drafted to the church to provide protection for the praying women. “The women rejected the protection and requested that the police should leave because the police did not provide protection for the dead priest neither did they show up on time when they were called,” he added. Jonathan explained that when the policemen refused to leave the residence of the late priest, the women threw stones and sachet water at them. “After the prayers, the women were joined by some youths to march peacefully through the major road of the town to the police division, singing anti-police songs to register their grievances, as they asked the police to leave the town since their presence was of no security value to the community. “As the police were trying to disperse the crowd, the police began shooting into the air and one of the bullets hit a man, who died immediately. That was how the protest turned violent,” he added. The eyewitness said the irate youths subsequently set the police division on fire. The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident. He said, “On January 17, 2023, around 9am, some angry youths of Kafin-Koro District, Paikoro LGA, mobilised and protested in Kafin-Koro town over the killing of the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Isaac. “During the protest, the rampaging youths attacked and set Kaffin-Koro Divisional Police Headquarters ablaze.” https://punchng.com/lynched-priest-police-kill-niger-protester-station-burnt/ |
Manchester City will be hoping that lightning does not strike twice when Harry Kane and Tottenham lace up their boots at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night. Following a failed pursuit to sign the England captain last summer, Kane inevitably settled the scores with a brace against the eventual Premier League champions. That came in the most dramatic circumstances, too, as both sides netted in injury-time as Tottenham won to blow the title race wide open. Tottenham had suffered three straight defeats before their February trip to Manchester at a slightly later juncture last season, but the proverbial form book went out the window as Kane put the Londoners in front - twice - either side of a 92nd-minute Riyad Mahrez penalty that looked to have given City a point. As it transpired, Kane had the final say as Guardiola sat back and pondered what might have been, not only on the pitch but in the transfer market, as well. Fast forward 11 months and City have their own goalscoring powerhouse in Erling Haaland, while they did hold on to claim another Premier League trophy. Still, the parallels will not be lost on Guardiola and Kane this coming Thursday night as they collide, once more, with important matters on the line - and Tottenham with their backs firmly against the wall. But what will Guardiola do to combat opponents he (infamously) previously referred to as 'the Harry Kane team'? |

In December 2022, Nigeria recorded her highest oil production since April 2022, the latest Platts survey by S&P Global Commodity Insights has revealed. The country’s oil production has been faced with oil theft that has hampered exports and resulted in significant oil spills and loss of millions of naira. However, the survey released on Wednesday showed that Nigeria’s volumes rebounded to the highest since April of 2022, producing 1.33 million b/d in December, contributing significantly to OPEC’s increased oil production in the period. OPEC and its allies increased crude oil production by 140,000 b/d as OPEC’s 13 countries pumped 28.98 million b/d in December, an increase of 110,000 b/d from November, led by Nigeria, while 10 non-OPEC partners including Russia added 13.73 million b/d, a rise of 30,000 b/d. When combined, the alliance produced 42.71 million b/d in December alone. The survey further highlighted that Nigeria saw major recoveries in its loadings of major grades Forcados and Brass River, while maintenance at the Bonga Field was completed in mid-November. However, the report added that despite the overall increase, the alliance’s output still massively lags in its production targets, with the gap at 1.80 million b/d in December, adding that most members face technical or financial difficulties in sustaining output. Meanwhile, recent data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission showed that Forcados had a crude oil production rate of 6,579,692, a condensate rate of 593,980, and a blended total of 7,173,672 barrels for December 2022, as opposed to a blended total of 6,856,88 recorded for November 2022. Brass, on the other hand, had a crude oil production rate of 581,198, a condensate rate of 45,010 and a blended total of 626,208 for December 2022, as opposed to a blended total of 431,672 recorded for November 2022. During a forum on January 11, 2023, however, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, said that the country could achieve a 2.2 million barrels per day crude oil production output in 2023. He said, “For us, we see a trajectory of restoring production including condensates within the year. We believe we can hit a target of 2.2 mb/d but our budget target is 1.8 mb/d, but we know that it is practical to do 2.2 mb/d within 2023.” https://punchng.com/nigeria-records-highest-oil-production-since-april-2022-report/ |
