Nigeria, Borno Govt Returned Trafficking Victims To Boko Haram Husbands, Traffickers –U.S. Report


A 2025 report on trafficking in persons in Nigeria, released by the U.S. Department of State, has made a shocking revelation that the Nigerian government and Borno State government returned several trafficked victims to their Boko Haram husbands, while some were returned to their traffickers.

According to the report, the Nigerian government did not meet the minimum standards in several key areas in its fight against trafficking in persons; hence, the most populous African country remains on Tier 2 classification.

The report said, “Efforts to identify and protect trafficking victims among vulnerable populations, especially women and children allegedly associated with non-state armed groups, IDPs, and children exploited in begging and domestic work, were inadequate.”

It further noted that due to insufficient screening efforts, the “federal and Borno State governments did not take effective measures to prevent the re-victimization or inappropriate penalization of potential victims solely for unlawful acts committed as a direct result of being trafficked, including among women and girls allegedly associated with Boko Haram.

“In some cases, authorities detained or returned victims to their Boko Haram husbands and traffickers.”

The report also revealed that corruption involving trafficking crimes, including among law enforcement officials and the judiciary, remained a significant concern and contributed to impunity for human traffickers in Nigeria.

“The quantity and quality of shelter services, especially for men, were insufficient,” it said.

According to the report, “Corruption and official complicity in trafficking crimes, including among designated officials with responsibilities to combat human trafficking, remained significant concerns, inhibiting law enforcement action and perpetuating impunity for trafficking crimes.”

The report, which is the latest after the 2023 report, stated that the Nigerian government only initiated the prosecution of one Nigerian Immigration Services (NIS) official for sex trafficking crimes within the period under review.

“Prosecutions of one Civilian Joint Task Force member for alleged sex trafficking remained pending,” the report stated.

It further noted that during the previous reporting period (2023), NAPTIP sacked five staff members, including a deputy director, and demoted three staff members for complicity in trafficking crimes, including soliciting bribes and leaking confidential information to trafficking suspects; “however, the government did not report initiating any prosecutions of the officials.”

It also noted that observers reported that some law enforcement, “military, and other government officials committed trafficking crimes, accepted bribes to facilitate trafficking, or obstructed justice by interfering with investigations.”

According to the report, observers also reported that some security officers sexually abused and exploited internally displaced persons (IDPs), including children, in and around Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The report added, “Endemic judicial corruption impeded prosecutions and convictions of most crimes, including human trafficking.”

It specifically stated, “The High Courts had jurisdiction over trafficking cases; however, in practice, cases were sometimes tried in state courts, which heard lower-level or misdemeanor crimes.

“Local judges did not have the same standardized training requirements as federal and state judges, which contributed to corruption and misapplication of the law.

“Illegal activities of non-state armed groups hindered law enforcement efforts, especially in northern Nigeria.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan to continue to enjoy his retirement and protect his good name.

Spokesman of the party, Mogaji Seye Oladejo gave the advice while reacting to the statement made by a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Professor Jerry Gana on the former President Jonathan contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Oladejo described Gana’s rhetoric as too soon, noting that elections are about ideas and performance, not just bringing back old leaders.

Extramarital dating app, Gleeden recently conducted a survey titled "Why do women commit adultery" and tried analysing the reasons why married women in India cheat on their husbands. One of the shocking findings of this research claim that seven out of 10 women cheat on their husbands because they do not contribute in household chores.

The app has over five hundred thousand subscribers in India and over five million users across the globe. Going by the statistics, seven out of 10 women step into an extramarital affair because their marriage has turned monotonous.

Interestingly, this research pointed that metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata had the maximum number of women who cheated on their husband because they were bored or were fed up with their husbands for not helping them in household chores.

This extramarital dating app came to India in 2017 and as per their claims, 30 per cent of its users are married females in the age group of 34-49 years.

Around 77 per cent of the married women confessed that they cheated on their partners because their marriage had become monotonous and having an extramarital affair helped them to add spice to their lives.

Among the 500,000 users, 20 per cent men and 13 per cent women accepted they were cheating on their partners. Also, around 48 per cent Indian women who decided to have an extramarital affair preferred to meet someone new on a dating app because the platform offers safety and privacy.

The research also talked about the increasing number of homosexual people who were forced into traditional marriages and are now finding their same-sex partners on the app.

The survey might have provided some compelling statistics but do these findings hold true for the entire Indian society. The sample size of this study is just 500,000 and represents only a fraction of India's population which is over 1.3 Billion.

Twenty-one wives of Local Government (LG) Chairmen from Adamawa State have traveled to Istanbul, Turkey, for a week-long leadership training program aimed at equipping them to “assist and advise” their husbands in their roles as LG chairmen.

Bandits Invade Another Kwara Community, Kill Vigilante Commander, Abduct Residents

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed a vigilante commander in a fresh attack on Kakafu village, Lade District, Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The victim, identified as Tetengi, was reportedly shot dead around 10pm Wednesday when the attackers stormed the community in large numbers and opened fire indiscriminately.

A resident, who confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters, said Tetengi was killed while confronting the bandits.

The source added that the invasion threw the community into panic, with some residents believed to have been abducted, though the exact number of kidnapped victims could not yet be ascertained.

He further lamented the absence of security reinforcements during the attack, urging the government to step up efforts against the growing wave of banditry in the area.

“We lost one of our brave local security commanders who, alongside others, confronted the bandits. We tried calling for security backup, but there was no response at the time the bandits struck.

"We are calling on the government to take drastic action; the incessant kidnappings and attacks are getting out of hand,” the source said.

SaharaReporters previously reported that the staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Patigi and Edu Local Government Areas of Kwara State have abandoned their duty posts and locked up their offices, citing the escalating wave of kidnappings and bandit attacks.

Top security sources told SaharaReporters that operatives in the intelligence community had advised INEC personnel to stay away from the volatile areas, warning that they could be targeted as “soft victims” by marauding bandits.

One of the sources disclosed that Lade town in Patigi LGA had been largely deserted due to repeated attacks by criminal groups.

“The INEC staff are scared. They don’t want to risk being kidnapped or attacked."

Another senior source added that the abduction of INEC officials would not only cause a national embarrassment but also pile pressure on the Tinubu administration.

“The fear is that if INEC staff are kidnapped, it would not only be a monumental national embarrassment but would also put the Tinubu administration under intense pressure and scrutiny,” one of the sources said.

“The INEC staff are scared of being kidnapped or attacked. They were told to seek clearance from security agencies before going to their duty posts. Hence, if anything happens to them, they are on their own.”

Residents confirmed that INEC offices in both local government areas remain locked for most days of the week, frustrating the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise that commenced in August.

Many locals say the suspension of services has further weakened confidence in government promises of security.

Another staff member revealed that the INEC chairman had bluntly stated there would be no funds to pay ransom in the event of abductions.

“We can’t risk our lives in the name of national service. There is no assurance of our safety. If bandits could attack a community barely two hours after the governor visited the place, then who is safe?”

Controversial Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has once again waded into Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, cautioning security agencies against provoking armed groups in Katsina State after a peace deal was struck between terrorists and residents of Faskari Local Government Area.

In a Facebook post, Gumi warned that any attempt to attack the armed groups could reignite violence in the state.

“Some people who don’t want peace, will provoke them again by attacking them. It’s very important to educate them that they are used by capitalising on their ignorance and zeal to vengeance,” Gumi wrote.

His comments come on the heels of a peace meeting held on Sunday in Faskari between residents, local traditional leaders, and a wanted bandit kingpin, Ado Alero, alongside dozens of armed herders.

A video obtained by SaharaReporters shows participants, many visibly armed with rifles and ammunition, openly engaging in dialogue with community leaders.

During the meeting, Alero admitted that past hostilities with security operatives worsened after one of his followers was arrested without explanation despite appeals to local and state authorities.

“What brought about this meeting is that one of my boys was arrested. At that time, we were not on good terms with the security operatives. I asked why they arrested him, but they did not give me any explanation,” he said.

He added that despite contacting the Secretary to the Katsina State Government and the then-chairman of Miyetti Allah before his death, no resolution was reached.

“I made inquiries from the Faskari Local Government up to the state government. I spoke with the Secretary to the Katsina State Governor, and I also spoke with the then Chairman of Miyetti Allah before he died,” he said.

“We followed due process at the time, but we were unable to secure his release. They never told us why he was arrested, and from there, I left the matter.”

Alero further described the latest peace initiative as unprecedented, saying, “Since we started having peace meetings, people have never gathered in such large numbers like this. This meeting gives me hope that, Insha Allah, peace will be restored—not only in Faskari and Katsina State but across the entire country.”

Also present was a Fulani herder Kwashé Garwa, who was filmed with ammunition strapped to his waist. He condemned the stereotyping of Fulani as bandits, insisting that criminality exists among all tribes.

He explained that they were united by pressing issues, including killings, kidnappings, and property destruction.

He asked, “In Nigeria, whenever there is a discussion, they call Fulani herders bandits and terrorists. But tell me, which tribe in the world does not have criminals among them? You Hausas, who say we are bandits, don’t you also have bandits among you?

“There are many, in fact dozens upon dozens. Yet, no one stereotypes you with such a name, but they stereotype us as bandits. If this stereotyping does not stop, then the killings and kidnappings will also not stop.”

Ekiti emerges first South-Western state to top inflation chart after CPI rebasing

Ekiti State emerged as the most expensive place to live in Nigeria in August 2025, making history as the first South-Western state to top the inflation rankings since the rebasing of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in January.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the state recorded an all-items inflation rate of 28.2% year-on-year, higher than any other state in the country.

Monthly inflation also surged by 6.1%, the steepest among the top ten. What makes Ekiti’s case striking is that food prices—often the driver of state-level inflation—actually eased.

The food index dropped by 6.8% month-on-month, with annual food inflation at 16.8%, far below the all-items rate. This indicates that inflation in Ekiti is now powered by non-food categories such as housing, transport, electricity, and other services.

For households in the state, this shift shows the growing weight of structural costs in their monthly budgets, a departure from the food-led spikes seen in much of the North.

Borno’s three-month reign ends

Ekiti’s rise dethroned Borno, which had been Nigeria’s most expensive state for three consecutive months—May, June, and July 2025. In August, Borno posted an all-items inflation rate of 26.3%, still among the highest nationally, but lower than its July peak of 34.5%.

Crucially, its month-on-month inflation fell by 3.5%, while food inflation—long the main culprit in the state—slumped by 8.7% MoM even as the annual food rate stayed alarmingly high at 36.7%.

The moderation reflects short-term relief in food prices, but the annual data shows the cumulative strain households have faced throughout the year. Insecurity, disrupted farming, and broken logistics remain the underlying drivers, ensuring that food continues to dominate Borno’s inflation story despite recent corrections.

How the top position has rotated in 2025

Ekiti’s climb to No. 1 caps months of regional shifts in Nigeria’s inflation map. In January, following the CPI rebasing, Imo (South-East) topped the chart with 17.7% all-items inflation, highlighting persistent food and essential goods costs despite lower rebased figures. In February, the crown passed to Edo (South-South), where broad-based inflation hit 33.6% on the back of surging food prices.

By March, the top spot shifted northward to Kaduna (North-West) at 33.3%, powered by double-digit monthly spikes across food and non-food baskets. Enugu (South-East) took over in April, recording 36% all-items inflation and showcasing how non-food pressures—housing, transport, and energy—can dominate state-level inflation profiles.

From May through July, the baton remained firmly in the North-East, with Borno holding the crown, driven by food inflation rates that soared as high as 64.4% year-on-year in May. The sequence shows that the inflationary crown has rotated across four geopolitical zones—South-East, South-South, North-West, North-East—before finally landing in the South-West in August with Ekiti.

A father, Ishaku Joseph, on Monday, dragged his daughter’s boyfriend, Yunana Zock, before a Customary Court sitting in Kaduna State for allegedly misappropriating his late wife’s death benefits.

The prosecutor, Jeremiah Amfani, said that the accused deceived Mr Joseph’s daughter, Ms Emmanuella, and withdrew N13 million paid as his wife’s death benefits.

He told the court that the money was transferred to his daughter’s account in 2023 because she was his late wife’s next of kin.

He stated that the matter was investigated by the police after Mr Joseph reported the case to the police.

Earlier, while giving testimony, Ms Emmanuella told the court that the accused took her ATM card without her knowledge and withdrew the money.

In his defence, the accused said he transferred N11.9 million to his girlfriend’s account and that she agreed to give him N2 million to start a business.

According to him, they spent time together in Abuja, where they shared each other’s ATM PIN numbers.

He presented a document showing his account statement from Opay, which was accepted as exhibit and added that he would present one witness in court at the hearing.

The judge, Patience Musa, adjourned the matter until September 30 for continuation of defence.

Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami has explained how his convoy was attacked by suspected political thugs allegedly belonging to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Kebbi State on Monday.

Malami had said he was returning from the Emir’s palace, where he went to condole the Emirate and the family of one of the emirate’s religious leaders when political thugs emerged from nowhere and started attacking his convoy with dangerous weapons.

Writing on his verified Facebook account on Tuesday, he described Monday as “sad day and a day that unfolded negative history in the political developments of Kebbi State.”

According to him, he was returning from a condolence visit to Emir of Gwandu and the family of late Imam Tukur Kola in Birnin Kebbi when his convoy was “violently attacked near my private residence by political thugs that emerged from State APC headquarters positioned very close to my residence.”

He narrated, “Stones and dangerous objects were hurled at us, vehicles were damaged, and several people sustained injuries inclusive of fractures.

“What is most disturbing is that this was not an isolated act of hooliganism. Evidence clearly points to a politically orchestrated attack, allegedly funded and coordinated by powerful figures who have abandoned governance at the altar of do-or-die politics.

“The presence of the APC party stalwarts and close relations of the Governor was visibly noticed on site when the attack was being perpetrated.

“The presence of security personnel did not help matters as the thugs moved into the party headquarters for apparent cover and no arrest was eventually made. There was deliberate inaction.

“This is not about me as Abubakar Malami. This is about the dangerous path our state and our country are treading, where thuggery replaces dialogue, and intimidation replaces governance, while over 133 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty according to NBS statistics.

“Let me be clear: Kebbi State Government should not fear Malami. They should fear the consequences of their own actions, the judgment of history, and the anger of the people who have been left in abject poverty, insecurity, and despair.

Reacting to the allegations, the Kebbi State government noted that, “from his narration, it was clear he [Malami] has his motive and has learned person he should live to speak the truth.”

Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune on the incident, the Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris added, “from the onset, we are not in political rally. Why will he come to console a person that was bereaved by thugs.

“I want to tell you, at the time, there was no any member of APC at the party’s office. He has his own motive. The party has no hand in his ordeal. The state government too has no hand in the attack.

The Katsina Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized illicit drugs worth approximately N690 million, intercepting two vehicles transporting the substances.

Mr. Idriss Abba-Aji, the NCS Controller in Katsina, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the arrests and seizures.

According to Abba-Aji, operatives recovered 14 cartons of Tramadol valued at N650 million and Fragbaline capsules worth N28 million, both hidden in separate vehicles.

He explained that the seizures were made within two weeks, adding that cannabis sativa worth about N15 million was also confiscated by the operatives.

“Recently, we noticed that our borders are used for drug smuggling. Vehicles are cleverly used to confuse security personnel encountering them.

“You may think such vehicles are conveying dignitaries. The public must understand that during our operations, we stop all available vehicles to ensure checks.

“People complain about customs disturbing commuters. Drug traffickers will never use lorries or open vehicles. They conceal drugs inside vehicles designed to appear ordinary,” the Controller said.

Importance of thorough checks
He stressed that operatives cannot detect such concealments without stopping and searching. According to him, luck favoured them in confiscating two vehicles on different occasions.

Abba-Aji noted that each vehicle conveyed large quantities of illicit drugs, suspected to be distributed within Katsina and neighbouring states if not intercepted.

“Recently, at one of our borders, we seized illicit drugs, mainly Tramadol, in 14 cartons worth about N650 million.

“This is the largest seizure of its kind in the command,” Abba-Aji revealed.

Drug abuse and banditry
He maintained that drug abuse fuels banditry in the region. To help curb the menace, the command has intensified its enforcement operations.

According to him, one suspect was arrested alongside one of the vehicles but was later released on administrative bail.

In a recent operation, Nairametrics reported, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command, intercepted five trucks loaded with 2,800 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice, cannabis, and other items, with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N1,268,794,474.

The Customs Area Controller, Dr. Benedict Oramalugo, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the Joint Border Post complex in Seme.

He said the interceptions occurred between July 1 and 19, following credible intelligence gathered by operatives along the Lagos–Abidjan corridor.

Separately, the NCS also intercepted 25 containers of pharmaceutical products and other counterfeit substances valued at N9.23 billion. These were handed over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for further action.

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adeniyi, confirmed the development on Friday during the handover in Apapa, Lagos.

He stated that the 25 containers, with a total Duty Paid Value of N9.23 billion, reflect a sophisticated network of criminal enterprises exploiting regulatory loopholes to undermine national health security.
