The supplementary list of successful candidates recently released by the Nigerian Navy has only northerners, SaharaReporters has gathered.

Successful candidates on the list were drawn from core Northern states with only a few from North Central (Kogi and Niger states).

An official of the Service, who spoke with SaharaReporters said such a thing had never happened in the history of the service.

He noted that the Nigerian Navy had always ensured equal representation of all the regions in all its lists, both primary and supplementary, querying why the latest one had not accommodated all the regions.

He said, “Normally, after recruitment, they release a list and those people on that list will go for training, they divide the list into two, Batch A and B.

“They released a supplementary list recently and this has never happened before that all the names on that list will be from the North, 44 candidates. They are not just from the North but mainly from the core North.

“In the normal recruitment list, every state is usually given equal number but I don't know why this is different. This supplementary list Batch A has resumed, Batch B will resume in January. These are the few people that will join those that are already there. As far as it is supplementary, every zone and state should be included.

"The former ones they did, all states were included in equal numbers except the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); the FCT is the only one that usually gets lesser slots because most of those using FCT to apply are not from there.

“My question is, why is this supplementary list representing only the North. It should represent all parts, not just a particular region.”

The Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District in the Ninth National Assembly, Adelere Oriolowo, has unveiled a community base station in the Ago Owu Farm Settlement in Osun State as a constituency project.

COVID-19 Isolation Centres Filling Up Again, Cases Rising—Lagos Governor Raises Alarm

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said the isolation centres in the state earmarked for the COVID-19 treatment are getting occupied again.

Sanwo-Olu, during a media briefing on Sunday, expressed concern over the increasing number of cases in the state and hinted that there is a potential third wave in Lagos.

According to him, the isolation centres have recorded a five per cent increase in occupancy in two weeks.

“From the beginning of July, we started to experience a steep increase in the number of daily confirmed cases, with the test positivity rate going from 1.1% at the end of June 2021 to its current rate of 6.6% as at 8th of July 2021.

“The rapid increase within a week gives great cause for concern. Also, within the last two weeks, the occupancy rate at our two isolation centres increased from an average of one per cent to six per cent,” Sanwo-Olu said.

This comes barely two days after the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said it had detected a confirmed case with the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant, also known as lineage B.1.617.2.

Key tracking equipment deployed by the police to go after kidnappers, bandits and terrorists has remained inactive since the beginning of the year amid raging violent crimes across the country.

Multiple reliable sources, according to PUNCH, attributed the downtime to non-subscription and failure to engage the relevant company to carry out system upgrade, among other challenges.

At least 2, 943 people in Nigeria have been abducted across the country in the last six months since the critical tracking technology was down.

Experts have noted that the use of mobile devices by kidnappers to negotiate ransoms makes it possible for law enforcement agencies to determine the movements of the cell phone owners.

Even if users have their location services, cellular data and Wi-Fi disabled, tracking system enables law enforcement agencies to have access to the technology that can determine the location of a mobile device at a specified time.

Senior police officers, including two commissioners of police who spoke to one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity, said the platforms used in tracking phones had been bad since January.

They said in certain cases that were of national interest, the police had to rely on the Office of the National Security Adviser in tracking bandits.

A Commissioner of Police, who spoke to one of our correspondents on the condition of anonymity, said the equipment was handed over to the police by the Nigerian government a few years ago during the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase and was installed by a Nigerian company.

“The equipment was given to us by President Buhari. The thing has not been working because those who are supposed to ensure that it runs well have not played their part.

“They claim that they are being owed money for the subscription,” he said.

When asked to explain how the subscription works, the CP said the police had not paid the fees since 2015 and the police had had to rely on the DSS.

He added, “From what I gathered, subscription fees are meant to be paid yearly but you won’t believe that the police have not paid since 2015. Initially, the company gave us a grace period but they have now cut off the police completely. We now rely solely on DSS and NSA office. It’s a terrible situation and it has worsened the insecurity in the country. The Police Trust Fund promised to help but we have not seen any action yet.”

Another police commissioner confirmed the development but said efforts were being made to restore the equipment.

The police commissioner added that the platform was undergoing a system upgrade which would soon be completed.

He added, “You know this thing is technology just like computer so we do upgrades from time to time. A lot of people on the field don’t even understand how it works. It is undergoing an upgrade because you have new features coming in from time to time. There are new technologies that you have to update to enhance their capacity.

“We have some new equipment which we need to adjust so they can link together. Some are still working. It is not as if all components are shut. That is what is happening.”

Men of the Counter Terrorism Unit of the Nigeria Police Force deployed to Katsina State to curb banditry in the state have taken to the streets of Kadawa village protesting non-payment of seven months allowances and promotion.

SaharaReporters gathered that the police officers also blocked a major road linking a popular market in the community.

The protest, according to some of the police officers, was held because of their seven months unpaid allowances.

The aggrieved officers insisted that their allowances should be paid with immediate effect or they would continue to disrupt socio-economic activities in the community and state at large.

They lamented that since January 2021, when they were deployed to the state on special operation, they had not been given their allowances.

A police inspector told SaharaReporters that the development has dampened the morale of the affected personnel.

He said many of them had to go through inhuman treatment, sleepiing on the corridor of offices on returning from duty at night.

The officer said, “They brought us to this village about 7 months ago, yet no single allowance. How do you expect us to stop collecting bribe? The government said they sent us here to fight bandits, is this how we are going to do that?

“Aside from unpaid allowances and non-promotion, what about the non-challant attitude of police authorities to our welfare?”
