A senior consultant physician based in Kano State died after collapsing barely 15 minutes after arriving at a hospital in Kano State to attend to patients who had been waiting several hours for his evening clinic.

The incident occurred last Saturday at Arewa Surgery Hospital, Hotoro, Kano, where the doctor reportedly responded to a request to replace another consultant who was unavailable for scheduled appointments.

The account was made public by Suleiman Harbo, an aide to the Jigawa State Governor, who said he was among the patients’ relatives present when the tragedy unfolded.

Harbo explained that he had taken his elderly mother to the hospital at about 5 p.m. for an appointment with a consultant physician.

On arrival, hospital staff informed them that the doctor originally scheduled to attend to them would not be available and recommended the deceased simply identified as Dr. Ibrahim.

According to him, about six patients, most of them above 80 years old, waited for the physician, prompting him to contact the hospital reception to enquire about the delay.

He said the receptionist reached the doctor by telephone and informed him that elderly patients, including his mother, were waiting.

Dr. Ibrahim reportedly assured them he would come after observing the Maghrib prayer.

Harbo said the consultant arrived shortly afterwards but suddenly became dizzy immediately after stepping out of his vehicle.

He said fellow medical personnel rushed the physician to the hospital’s emergency unit, where doctors battled to revive him.

“Within 15 minutes, he was confirmed dead,” Harbo wrote, describing the incident as shocking and deeply painful.

He added that the development left both patients and medical personnel devastated.

“The painful irony was this: all the patients waiting to see him were above 80 years of age, while about five senior consultant doctors fought to save him, yet all of them broke down in tears,” he said.

Harbo recalled that his mother was initially unaware of the incident and asked whether the doctor had arrived.

Before he could respond, another patient reportedly informed her that the physician they had all been waiting to see had just died.

On hearing the news, Harbo said his mother immediately offered prayers for the deceased.

“‘Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. So that was the doctor they rushed inside? May Allah have mercy on him. Let us just go home. I am already healed,’ she said.”

Harbo said he struggled to contain his emotions as he drove his mother home after the incident.

He also disclosed that those present during the doctor’s final moments said his last audible words were, “La ilaha illallah,” the Islamic declaration of faith.

Describing the loss as one that would remain with him for a long time, Harbo prayed for Allah to forgive the late physician’s shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.

The cause of Dr. Ibrahim’s sudden collapse was not immediately known.

Justice Ogunmoye commended the diligence and professionalism of the DSS prosecutors for successfully proving the case beyond reasonable doubt.

Justice Lekan Ogunmoye of Ekiti High Court on Monday sentenced two men identified as Ibrahim Abubakar and Abdullahi Abubakar to death after he declared them guilty of kidnapping a staff member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC

The two men arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS following the abduction of the NYSC staff member, Omoboade Adesina, in Ekiti State on 22nd April 2022.

A third defendant, Usman Abubakar, was however discharged after the Court held that there was insufficient evidence linking him to the crime.

The DSS arrested and subsequently prosecuted three suspects over the abduction.

The Court, however, discharged and acquitted the third defendant, Usman Abubakar.

Justice Ogunmoye commended the diligence and professionalism of the DSS prosecutors for successfully proving the case beyond reasonable doubt.

He specifically highlighted the identification parade conducted by the Service, as well as the analysis of Call Data Records during investigation, as critical pieces of evidence that strengthened the prosecution’s case and ultimately secured the conviction.

DSS said the judgment marked another major courtroom success for its sustained efforts to combat violent crimes across the country.

The conviction came on the heels of a death sentence recently handed down by a Sokoto State High Court against three men convicted of terrorism and cross-border arms proliferation.

It also followed the successful conviction of a kidnap suspect in Kogi State earlier secured by the Service, among other prosecutions.

The secret Police noted that the string of successful prosecutions underscores the increasing reliance on intelligence-led investigations in tackling kidnapping, terrorism, and other violent crimes.

It also reinforced the commitment of the DSS to ensuring that perpetrators of kidnapping, terrorism, and related criminal offences are brought to justice and made to face the full weight of the law.

‘They Poured Petrol On Me And Set Me On Fire’: Displaced Katsina Farmer Recounts Bandits’ Brutal Attack

A displaced resident of Katsina State, identified as Aliyu Hassan, has recounted the horrifying moment bandits allegedly doused him with petrol and set him ablaze after attacking him on his farm in Batagarawa Local Government Area.

Hassan, who spoke in Hausa in a video posted on X by security expert Bakatsine, narrated how he narrowly survived the brutal attack after rolling repeatedly on the ground until the fire eventually went out.

“They poured petrol on me and set me on fire, right on my head. They struck a match and lit it, then they just left,” Hassan said.

“I kept screaming for help and rolling on the ground, rolling and rolling in the sand. By God’s mercy, the fire eventually went out.”

The victim, now displaced and living in Katsina town, said he and his family have been unable to return to their village following repeated attacks by bandits.

“Now we are here in Katsina town. Honestly, we have not gone back home. We are staying in Sabon Layi, at a place where displaced people are sheltered. We don’t even have a proper place to stay,” he lamented.

According to Hassan, the incident happened while he was working on his farm during the farming season.

“I was on the farm working when the attackers came. I didn’t even notice they were coming,” he said.

“When I tried to run, they chased me. If I had tried to escape, they would have shot me, so I stopped. They stood there and demanded money and my phone, but I told them I didn’t have any.”

Hassan said the attackers insisted that “my father had money and that I should take them to our house.”

The victim explained that he informed the gunmen that his family had already been displaced from their community due to insecurity and that he only returned to cultivate his farmland because it was farming season.

“We had already been displaced before and driven from our homes. I explained that I had only come to work on the farm because it was farming season,” he said.

According to him, the attackers ignored his pleas and instead subjected him to severe torture.

“They said, ‘Then you are going to bathe.’ They dragged me to a nearby hut and tied me up. They tied my legs and hands, poured petrol on my head, struck a lighter, and set me ablaze before leaving,” he narrated.

Hassan said he screamed in agony while struggling desperately to survive.

“I screamed and rolled on the ground, rolling in the sand until, by God’s mercy, the fire went out,” he added.

He further disclosed that he would likely have died if not for the intervention of a stranger who later found him and rushed him to hospital.

“I was sitting there helpless when a kind man came and helped me. He lifted me up and took me into town to a hospital where they treated me,” he said.

“It was somewhere near Malumfashi. After the treatment there, they referred me to Katsina. We came to Katsina General Hospital, and after they told us to go to Batagarawa. When we got there, they said they could not handle it and referred us again to the medical centre.”

Hassan said after several failed attempts to secure proper treatment, some residents directed him to a traditional burns specialist in Kawari village.

“They said that by God’s will, if we went there, I might recover. So we went, and the man treated me and applied medicine to my body. After that, we returned to town,” he said.

When asked which parts of his body were affected, Hassan said the burns severely damaged multiple areas.

“My face, neck, chest, and also my hands,” he said.

He identified the scene of the attack as Rumu village in Batagarawa Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Asked about his present condition, Hassan said he still suffers severe pain and discomfort from the injuries.

“Sometimes I feel severe pain, and at other times I feel itching and irritation,” he explained.

“When I drink cold water, it cools me a little. Sometimes when the sun is hot, I can’t even move around freely and have to stay indoors away from people.”

He also disclosed that one of the attackers remained behind to watch him burn after setting him on fire.

“There were about five of them on motorcycles,” he said.

“After they set me on fire, four of them left while one stayed behind watching me roll on the ground as the fire kept burning. Eventually he also left me there. By the power of God, while I kept rolling, the fire finally went out.”

Explaining how his hands were also burnt, Hassan said the flames spread across his body as he struggled on the ground.

“The fire spread while I was lying down and rolling on the ground. That is how the burns reached my hands too,” he said.

Despite surviving the attack, Hassan said he remains displaced and unable to return to his community due to fear of further attacks.

“No. We are still here in Katsina town. Honestly, we have not returned home,” he said when asked if he had gone back to his village.

“We are staying at Sabon Layi among displaced people, and we don’t even have a proper place to live.”

On how his family survives daily, Hassan said they depend entirely on humanitarian assistance and donations from kind-hearted individuals.

“As for food, we survive on the food aid distributed by charitable people,” he said.

Asked about the homes they abandoned, he responded, “They are still there, but we are unable to go back.”

Hassan appealed to the government to restore peace and security to affected communities across Katsina State and other parts of northern Nigeria ravaged by banditry.

“We pray that this government will bring peace,” he said.

“May God bring an end to all this suffering and return everyone safely to their homes. May God bless us with prosperity and a peaceful life.”

Unknown gunmen, in the early hours of Sunday morning, invaded the residence of a former staff member of the Ogun State Television (OGTV), Ms Kitan Oyesiku, and murdered her in cold blood, alongside her security man.

The ugly incident, the Nigerian Tribune learnt, happened at Agodo community, in the Kopabe area of Abeokuta. It motive behind the dastardly act was still unknown, as the development had left family members, neighbours and associates in shock and disbelief.

Information had it that the lifeless bodies of the two victims were discovered after the hoodlums had carried out the nefarious act.

The late Oyesiku was well known in media circles, having served with Ogun State Television (OGTV) before her retirement.

News of her death has sparked grief among colleagues, friends, and residents of the state.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident.

He stated that official reaction from the State Police Command would be made available to newsmen as an investigation into the killings had commenced.

Winger Jeremy Doku has been criticised for saying he wants to leave Belgium's World Cup camp to be with his wife when she gives birth to their first child.

A French appeals court on Friday confirmed that Moroccan football star Achraf Hakimi will face trial for the alleged rape of a woman in 2023, which the Paris Saint-Germain defender denies.

In February 2023, a woman then aged 24 told police in the Val-de-Marne region southeast of Paris that Hakimi had raped her.

The PSG right-back and captain of the Moroccan national team, whose second match of the 2026 World Cup kicks off on Friday against Scotland, has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Shortly after the Versailles Court of Appeal delivered its ruling, Hakimi wrote on X that he had been “waiting for this trial since day one.”

Speaking to the press for the first time in a Mediapart article published Thursday, the woman, using the pseudonym Jeanne, said she wanted a trial “to defend myself, to be heard”.

“I want to explain myself. I want people to believe me,” she added.

Medical doctors have raised alarm that the country’s healthcare system is facing a dangerous manpower crisis, with only about 55,000 doctors left to serve a population of more than 220 million people.

They raised the alarm at the Ordinary General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, FNPH, Yaba, Lagos, with the theme, “Too Few Doctors, Too Many Patients: The Consequences of Manpower Shortage on the Mental Well-being of Nigerians.”

The doctors, among whom are mental experts, also said the present situation is worsening access to psychiatric care and leaving millions of vulnerable Nigerians untreated.

The doctors also said no fewer than 16,000 Nigerian doctors have emigrated in the last five years, worsening an already dire manpower shortage in the country’s health sector.

They warned that the sustained exodus of healthcare workers under the “Japa” syndrome had severely depleted the country’s mental health workforce, widened treatment gaps, increased the cost of care and placed enormous pressure on the few specialists remaining in the system.

Confirming the situation to Vanguard yesterday, the President of Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Prof Omoti Ernest, said recent data showed that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, had registered over 130,000 doctors but noted only about 55,000 are actively practicing within Nigeria.

He said with a population exceeding 220 million, this translated to roughly one doctor for every 3,600 to 4,000 people.

“This ratio is far below the World Health Organisation’s recommended threshold of one doctor to about 600 people, highlighting the significant shortage of medical personnel and the strain on healthcare delivery.

“Many Nigerian-trained doctors have emigrated or are no longer engaged in active clinical practice, contributing to the country’s healthcare workforce shortage,” the NMA President said.

He said the emigration of skilled professionals in search of better opportunities abroad has had a significant impact on Nigeria’s hospitals and healthcare workforce.

He said further: “Thousands of doctors and other healthcare professionals have left the country in recent years, leading to severe staff shortages, increased workload for those who remain with many suffering from burnout, longer waiting times for patients, and declining quality of care in many public hospitals.

“Rural and under-served communities have been particularly affected, as they already struggle with limited access to healthcare services.

‘’The reasons behind this migration include poor remuneration, inadequate working conditions, insecurity, limited opportunities for career advancement, and insufficient investment in healthcare infrastructure, among others.

“Many professionals are attracted by better pay, improved facilities, and more stable environments in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.”

‘What can be done’

To address the trend, he said the Federal Government should prioritise salaries and welfare packages for healthcare workers, invest more in modern medical equipment and hospital infrastructure, expand residency and specialist training opportunities, and create clear career progression pathways.

Omoti said: “Strengthening security, ensuring timely payment of wages, and providing incentives for professionals to work in under-served areas will also help retain talent.

‘’In addition, partnerships with the private sector and diaspora engagement programmes could encourage Nigerian healthcare professionals abroad to contribute their expertise and support development of the country’s healthcare system.”

Speaking at the parley, a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Dr. Yesir Kareem, said Nigeria’s doctor-to-patient ratio had fallen to about one doctor for more than 10,000 patients, far below the World Health Organisation’s recommended ratio of one doctor to 600 people.

According to him, the consequences are particularly devastating for mental healthcare.

“Only about 55,000 doctors remain to serve a population of over 220 million Nigerians. More than 40 million Nigerians suffer from mental health disorders, yet about 85 per cent of them do not have access to mental healthcare services,” Kareem said.

He noted that Nigeria’s shortage of psychiatrists and other mental health specialists has reached alarming levels, warning that untreated mental illnesses contribute to family breakdowns, substance abuse, unemployment, delayed diagnosis and premature deaths.

“The economic consequences are equally devastating, with billions of dollars lost annually due to untreated mental health conditions,” he added.

He also noted that 94,000 doctors and nurses had left Nigeria since the Japa syndrome started some years ago.

He said the doctors were leaving due to poor remuneration and delayed salaries, competitive salaries in destination countries, overwhelming patient loads (1:10,000+), better work-life balance and conditions, and inadequate medical equipment & facilities.

He also listed access to modern medical technology, limited career advancement opportunities, professional development and training, unsafe working conditions and long hours, unstable political and economic environment and insecurity and socioeconomic instability as factors encouraging migration of doctors from the country.

President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, APN, Dr. Veronica Nyamali, in a chat with Vanguard, described the manpower shortage as a crisis that had forced consultants to abandon higher-level responsibilities, such as research and specialist care, in order to fill gaps left by departing doctors.

“There are gaps everywhere. Work that should be done by four psychiatrists is now being handled by one or two people. Consultants are increasingly forced to work at lower levels because the doctors they are supposed to supervise are no longer there,” she said.

Nyamali lamented that many doctors undergoing specialist training now leave the country before completing their careers in Nigeria, creating persistent vacancies across psychiatric facilities.

“Those we train are leaving. Junior registrars, senior registrars, many complete their examinations and return abroad. The result is that we have shortages at every level of care,” she stated.

Disclosing that the country currently has less than 150 psychiatrists, she warned that the dwindling number of specialists is making mental healthcare increasingly expensive and inaccessible, especially for patients in rural communities where psychiatrists are virtually non-existent.

‘Specialists now scarce’

“When specialists become scarce, services become more expensive. Access becomes difficult because patients must travel long distances to find care. This is contrary to the principle of universal health coverage, where mental health services should be available, affordable and accessible to everyone,” Nyamali said.

The APN president further linked the brain drain to a shrinking pharmaceutical landscape, saying several pharmaceutical companies had either scaled down operations or exited the country, reducing access to newer and more effective psychiatric medications.

“We now have fewer treatment options. Some of the newer drugs that offer better outcomes are no longer readily available. At the same time, the market is being flooded with fake medicines, making treatment even more challenging,” she warned.

Nyamali noted that the shortage of specialists has created room for greater reliance on traditional and faith-based healers, who are often the first point of contact for people with mental illnesses.

While acknowledging their influence within communities, she said psychiatrists are increasingly collaborating with traditional and religious healers to discourage harmful practices such as chaining, flogging and unlawful confinement of persons living with mental disorders.

“We recognise that people go to them first because they are available, accessible and affordable. Rather than confront them, we are engaging them and providing basic mental health education so that harmful practices can be eliminated and patients referred appropriately,” she explained.

Nyamali also highlighted the growing burden of mental illness in Nigeria, linking rising cases to worsening economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, substance abuse, kidnappings and other traumatic experiences.

“People are being traumatised daily. Poverty, joblessness, violence and insecurity are all social determinants of mental illness. Those already living with mental health conditions are relapsing more frequently, while many others are developing new mental health challenges because of the pressures of daily living,” she said.

She expressed concern that mental healthcare remains largely financed through out-of-pocket spending, despite the chronic nature of many psychiatric conditions.

“Mental illness is not properly covered under health insurance. Many of the newer medications are not included in insurance drug lists, leaving families to bear enormous treatment costs. The burden on care-givers is huge,” she added.

At the conference, the President of ARD, FNPH Yaba, Dr. Okuwoga Temitope, said the shortage of doctors has become a major threat to access to quality mental healthcare in Nigeria.

“As mental health professionals, we witness first hand the widening treatment gap, the burden on already stretched healthcare workers and the impact these shortages have on access to quality mental healthcare for Nigerians,” he said.

Temitope noted that resident doctors are increasingly battling burnout, anxiety, stress and depression due to overwhelming workloads caused by the shortage of manpower.

The association urged federal and state governments to improve remuneration, strengthen welfare packages, expand specialist training programmes, improve working conditions and increase investment in mental healthcare to stem the tide of migration.

The doctors also advocated the integration of mental health services into primary healthcare centres, wider deployment of telepsychiatry and increased public awareness to reduce stigma and improve early treatment seeking.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the conference, the association reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the welfare of resident doctors and improving access to quality mental healthcare services across the country.

It also urged the management of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, to expedite the enrolment of newly employed resident doctors on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS, to prevent salary delays and financial hardship.

The doctors, however, commended the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye, for restoring public electricity supply to the Yaba and Oshodi arms of the institution after a prolonged outage, while calling for more stable power to support patient care and residency training.
