Travel / Re: UK Home Office: Students Bringing Dependants To The UK Fall By 80% by ttmacoy: 8:21am On May 03 |
I think without these changes there will be more long term damage to the Uk educational sector. Many of those universities are fast becoming diploma mills only interested in the money international students from Nigeria India etc are bringing and long term this will seriously affect the credibility and reputation of UK universities. We all know majority of the students impacted are not really students but using the student visa as a route to migrate. Those universities will have to adjust and face reality rather than be allowed to continue to admit any and everybody as long as they are willing to pay. There will be short term pain but in my opinion it makes more sense for the long term. UK universities cannot continue the way they have been operating, it’s not sustainable. Those universities impacted will adjust by closing some of the many random and useless courses they offer, trimming their bloated workforce and making more realistic growth plans. The UK already suffers from abundance of so called Mickey degrees where students are enrolling on courses that don't really lead to good paying jobs and now they are focused on enrolling a ton on international students who end up with limited career prospects in the UK just so they can get their international fees. I l know international students from Nigeria who have gone for MBA and now work as care workers just to be able to get work permits to remain in the UK, I'm sure you can see that is not the right path. Many of those universities now offer masters course with placement year even though they do absolutely nothing to help the students get a placement just so they can charge extra fee for the placement year in exchange for helping international students get longer student visas. It's all a charade and a mess. There are many reports of poor teaching, mediocre students who do the bare minimum but lecturers are pressured to pass them so as not to affect the money coming from international students, having classes 90% international students many who can’t even speak or write basic English yet enrolled on a course taught in English. My view is the long term impact of allowing greedy lazy university administrators to depend so much on international students is far worse than the short term impact of the changes being made. emkz: 3 Likes |

Foreign Affairs / Re: Richest Countries In The World 2024 by ttmacoy: 11:45am On May 02 |
Please address my points one by one and tell me which one is wrong, because you paid $69k for the last world economic forum doesn't means Ireland's true GDP per capita is over $130k? As I said I will be surprised if Ireland's true GDP is more than $45k when you remove all the distortions from the US companies. You claim they are working on their housing crisis and so immigrants will flood in, aren't the majority of the jobs that attracted immigrants from the US companies in the first place? 😂, which Irish company is hiring people at that level? None buddy none. The job boom was driven by US companies setting up in Ireland for tax purposes, stop claiming what you don't understand. And as I said if the EU is successful in closing the tax loophole in their fight with Apple Ireland's GDP will drop significantly because there is really no other benefit aside the tax benefits hence why even Ireland is fighting against the EU. In summary Ireland will be F**KED if the EU is successful in forcing Apple to pay the back taxes and closing the loophole. And the Biden administration gave also been trying to work with other countries to level the corporate tax and agree a minimum corporate tax which if successful will close the tax haven loophole that Ireland depends on. Luxembourg is a rich country yes but that GDP per capita is highly skewed, as I said half of the country's workforce live and commute from neighboring countries like Australia, Germany etc so NO Luxembourg does not have a true GDP per capita of over $130k or whatever was listed. Are they still a rich country sure but nowhere near $130k per capita rich, not even close. And Luxembourg's GDP per capita is also skewed by US companies seeking tax havens into Europe lol. For someone who claims to go to attend the world economic forum you sure have very little understanding of how economies work. You really think the Irish have it better than the British? Really Ireland is richer than the UK? Nah joke? 😂 😆 Indigbo: 1 Like |

Ok I don hear, Ireland is super rich, go an get a high paying job in Ireland 😂 😆 😂 😆 😂 😆 I don't need to work for world economic forum to have an understanding but that's seems to be your shining moment that you paid $65k for your boss to attend world economic forum and yet you can't grasp the basic concept of what drives different countries GDP per capita. Which companies have the Irish founded that justifies such high GDP per capita? Guinness Do they have oil like Norway where you can clearly see their high GDP per capita is how they invested their natural resources and they have a small population? When you have a country with GDP per capita of $130k yet the average salary is €3k a month that should set alarms bells in your head to ask what is driving the unusually high GDP per capita not. You should not have such disparity between both figures. Indigbo: |
Foreign Affairs / Re: Richest Countries In The World 2024 by ttmacoy: 12:55am On May 02 |
You're joking right? I will give a real life example, my wife works for a biotech company called Horizon which was headquartered in Ireland for tax purposes but operates pretty much out of Deerfield in Illinois. https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/7/22715229/ireland-status-tax-haven-google-facebook-apple https://www.irishtimes.com/business/2023/10/23/ireland-identified-as-one-of-worlds-top-tax-havens/ If Ireland truly has a GDP per capita of $130k+ who is their average salary like €3k a month My point about the taxes is not just to UK but pretty much Europe but I used UK as example. This is an example of Amazon using Luxembourg to do the same thing. And that is another reason why Luxembourg's GDP per capita is skewed, a combination of US tech firms using it as a low tax entry into the EU and Europe and half of its workforce living in neighboring countries but excluded from the GDP per capita calculation. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/may/04/amazon-sales-income-europe-corporation-tax-luxembourg Apple was the tech company that started this trend and you can see the EU has started fighting back and If they succeed I expect Ireland GDP to drop over time given that tax advantage is no longer there. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/technology/2023/nov/09/apple-suffers-setback-in-fight-against-eu-order-to-pay-11bn-tax-bill-in-ireland If you think you will go Ireland and get a €100k job because the GDP per capita is so high you're delusional lol Ireland is a tax haven simple stop deceiving yourself, and the boom in jobs over the last 10 or so years has been driven by US tech and other companies especially biotechnology companies setting up their European headquarters there for tax reasons. Ireland's true GDP is significantly lower than the UK, I will be surprised if it's more than $45k. https://www.irishtimes.com/business/economy/2023/01/30/irish-economy-now-growing-at-four-times-the-eu-rate/ https://www.politico.eu/article/ireland-gdp-growth-multinationals-misleading/ OriOko88:

Foreign Affairs / Re: Richest Countries In The World 2024 by ttmacoy: 7:55pm On May 01 |
Not really. Many of the countries with higher GDP per capita are not true representation eg Ireland has a high GDP per capita because of the high number of American companies who have their headquarters there for tax purposes. Most of those companies activities actually take place in the US or they use Ireland as a gateway to the UK market but benefit from lower taxes so the true GDP per capita for Ireland is significantly lower same as average income. That's why you have people in the UK angry that the likes of Google or Amazon pay little corporate tax in the UK because of the way they have structures they corporate organization through Ireland. Luxembourg has a high GDP per capita because it is a very small country and about 50% if it's workforce actually live outside and commute from Austria, Germany etc so when they calculate the GDP per capita it's based on the actual numbers of people who live in Luxembourg but that excludes the roughly 50% of the workforce who commute. sleekybaba: |

Foreign Affairs / Re: Japa: UK Unemployment Situation Worsens by ttmacoy: 4:11pm On Mar 13 |
Expect more restrictions. And I see where Cleverly is coming from, many UK universities are fast becoming money mills desperate to get money from international students at the expense of falling standards and this will impact the reputation of UK universities in the long term. Many of these universities are unable to help students get good jobs after graduation and are only focused on money. Career outcomes, salaries etc plays a significant part in the ranking and reputation of universities and when you now have a significant amount of your students coming as a way to migrate not because they are true students and many ending up doing care work there will be consequences. They may make money short term but medium to long term there will be far reaching consequences. When you go to a university in the UK and end up in a course that is 90% international students you should know there's trouble brewing. When Nigerians find a loophole we tend to overdo it to the extent that it's so obvious it's a loophole that is being abused and guess what? The loophole will be closed. https://www.theguardian.com/education/2024/mar/12/overseas-students-undermining-uk-higher-education-warns-cleverly RodgersAkpafu: 1 Like

And by your logic we are smart for abandoning our education sector and paying huge sums of money as tuition in the UK? While international students bring in money, as with all things there's an optimum amount before they start to experience negative returns. All those Nigerians going with children will all be eligible for free education etc., increasing cost of housing for their citizens etc. so there are also negative impacts, the decision cannot just be made on "get paid huge sum for tuition", there are lots of other factors and impacts. Education / Re: Foreign Students: UK Varsities May Fall Into Deficit, Says Report by ttmacoy: 9:10pm On Mar 12 |
That's not true for students which is the main issue here, the stats show Nigerians bring a lot more dependents to the UK and its even worse when you adjust per capita because more Indians are issued UK student visas than Nigerians yet Nigerian students bring more dependents. The main reason is the difference in demographic, while there are always exceptions the average Indian international student in the UK is younger and sponsored by parents while the average Nigerian is older, married with children. https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/immigration-system-statistics-year-ending-march-2023/why-do-people-come-to-the-uk-to-study#:~:text=Nigeria%20had%20the%20highest%20number,increasing%20from%2022%2C598%20to%2042%2C381. Many Nigerians have really abused the care worker scheme in the UK. Some are charging up to £10k to sponsor their fellow Nigerians and then they don’t have work for them or give them 10 hours a week, meanwhile the poor person is unable to legally work for another organization because they are tied by work permit. And they have sold property, borrowed money etc. to fund this. By the time they pay £10k for certificate of sponsorship, pay for visa fees and NHS fees they are probably spending over £20k to end up with a shitty job with shitty wages or worse not even enough hours to pay basic bills. On top of all that the pay for care workers is rubbish especially when you consider the work involved. I know many Nigerians who went to UK on student visa for masters, MBA etc. who can only get care work after graduation because most companies are not willing to sponsor for work visa and there is a shortage of care workers. 20 Likes 3 Shares |

Education / Re: Foreign Students: UK Varsities May Fall Into Deficit, Says Report by ttmacoy: 6:58pm On Jan 12 |
That’s actually not true. The average international student is younger, single and funded by their parents and family. The average Nigerian international student especially over the last few years is in his or her 40s, married with children and coming as a student solely with the goal of migrating not actually studying. That’s why you see many Nigerians flocking to lower ranked universities which are cheaper and easier to get admission. Many of these universities are just money mills and don’t give a shit about ensuring the students get good jobs or get a good education. If they take the option away Nigerians will still go, we are so desperate and hooked that we will still go. Nbote: |
Travel / Re: Japa: UK Stops Nigerian Students, Others From Bringing Dependants. by ttmacoy: 12:34am On Jan 03 |
That’s a different policy change. This is focused on curbing the growing number of international students who bring dependents with them and is now in effect. The one you’re referring to aims at curbing the number of dependents coming with people on work visas eg care workers nurses etc and also requires higher salary thresholds, it will come into effect in the spring. freemonts87: |

That's not true. If the parents are US military personnel posted abroad yes they will be citizens, but you can't just go visit someone on the base abroad and give birth and think your child will become a US citizen. Same with embassy. ObiaboAdoka: |
Travel / Re: Visa Alone No Longer Guarantees Entry - Uk Announces Travel Requirements by ttmacoy: 3:44am On Sep 20, 2023 |
Misinformation in this thread. The ETA is similar to the ESTA in the US and will be for countries who don’t need a visa. Rather than will get the ETA which is quicker and cheaper compared to a visa. Some citizens from countries that qualify for the ETA may require a visa if they are ineligible eg have a criminal record etc. Nigerians will continue to need a visa and will not require an ETA. The EU is also working on a similar travel authorization as well. meum: |
