She did wrong, but why will a man also leave his wife and children to fend for themselves to the extent they are thrown out of their house due to non payment of rent. It must mean they owed for a few months and he didn't do anything to help. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy hasn't abandoned her and the children. Olunmercy56:

I disagree, this is the right approach. If soldiers are needed it should come from NATO and European countries with the US supporting not the US leading. The US just spent 20 years in Afghanistan with nothing to show for it, and in 5 or 10 years time no one will remember it Putin that invaded, the narrative will be why did the US go to Ukraine Russia is a bigger threat to European nations so they should commit and lead and the US support. Even Germany was refusing to criticize until recently trying to placate Putin due to dependence on gas. Didn't the US tell them not to go ahead with Nord Stream 2 a few years ago and they ignored and went ahead with Russia increasing the risk and dependence on Russia and Putin? Also claiming Kiev will win Russia is delusional, why didn't they take back Crimea that Putin took a few years ago? Why are they so dependent on US and NATO for defense if they are able to beat Russia by themselves as you claim? They can't even fund their military without US aid. BigTableShaker: Naso o..

I'm not sure how you reached the conclusion that most home owners are white and racist, millions and millions use Airbnb every year. This approach of only looking for Nigerians or doing things with Nigerians limits your options and also mitigates the benefits of travelling which is to expose you to other ways of doing things. I know Nigerians who will travel on "holiday" and just sit in some Nigerian friend or family members house, will not venture anywhere on their own unless the friend takes them. Look on Airbnb, read peoples reviews etc. and pick a place that works. Most of the time you don't even have to meet or see the owner as its all via the app and they send you codes to get the keys or enter the place. You can also check VRBO, it's a competitor to Airbnb. bimmyd2000: Hello Nairalanders, apart from staying in hotels or air bnb's in the US for holidays, duration of 2 weeks to 1-2 months what other alternatives do one have for a good accomodation that can still afford you to cook and all. Do Nigerians in the States let out their apartments or room for shortlets? Does anyone here have good or bad ecperiencea about these and how good is air bnb especially since you are black and most of the home owners are whites (racism) factors. Comments, advises, personal experiences and suggestions are welcome. |

If she lives abroad which I think she does, then it's relatively easier to pay for such trips compared to Nigeria where its more for the rich. You may have to prioritize and give up some things such as buying expensive clothes etc. based on what's important to you. For example a teenager in the UK can work over the summer break and save enough to pay for a trip. Obviously the teenager will be living at home so not paying rent etc. but still the average teenager in Nigeria cannot save up over summer break from school to fund such a trip, it will have to be funded by his/her rich parents. solochris: I just feel like repeating this same question asked sometime ago, "who is bankrolling this trip"? Asking where a potential employee that I will entrust with money lives or seeking for clarification over a red flag noticed while discussing with her is not wrong. While I agree that she doesn't sound ready or a good fit, many of the questions you asked are illegal in other countries and will get you in trouble for discrimination. Where do you live? what street? are you married? etc. is none of your business. Having said that she also doesn't sound like someone you want to hire so good call. OlujobaSamuel: I asked personal questions that I felt are relevant to her ability to perform her tasks while working for me. I want to believe you are referring to the marriage part of the discussion. I noticed that she was relatively very young(17-20), putting on a wedding ring and not in her husband's house (according to her, i asked where she was staying before the marriage part came in). So if she is having her wedding ring on, it means she is still with him, then how will she cope coming to work Monday to Saturday every week without calling me one morning that she is traveling or not available. I don't have issues with her being married, only one of the attendants working for me is single, others are married with some having kids. |

I get your point, the reason I brought that up is that is essential to him being sponsored. Also there are residency requirements for the father to sponsor him as an immediate relative so if his father moved back to Nigeria five years ago that may be a stumbling block. The point about being married to his mother or not is also relevant as there will be extra steps required to prove he is his father (proof of legitimization) if out of wedlock as opposed to just submitting a birth and marriage certificate. Yes I agree he doesn't need to share details here on a public forum, he should go check the requirements for sponsorship to see if he can meet them, and as you said he needs to try to get his father's support. BigDawsNet: Relationship with his father is a different thing entirely... We shouldn't really interfere...
Our only advice he asked was how to get the citizenship...
Right now I will advice him to talk to his dad and they can start an immigrant visa process for him .... I hope and pray his Dad go along with the plan so he can migrate and start a life for himself and his future family |

Thanks I didn't see the age 27. I did ask if his dad was a citizen before or after he was born and he said before, but if as you say he is 27 and his father has been a citizen for 20 years then you are right he has to go through the green card route. This all depends on the relationship he has with his father as he will have to file for him as an immediate relative. I have not seen any indication form his posts that he is in touch with or in good relation with his father if the guy has been a citizen for 20 years and not made any attempt to get him over. BigDawsNet: He said his 27 His dad hav been in the US for 20years
I'm not sure but we don't know if his dad got citizenship at 7th year of his arrival in the US...
Let say his dad got citizenship at 10year of arrival in the US...
The dude haz been born already...
All dis would not be necessary if his Dad was a US citizen by birth...but it sounds more like a cititzen by neutralization...
My advice for the guy is to follow the Greencard route...
With his Greencard... In less than 3 years ..he can secure a passport |
Travel › Re: My Dad Is An American Citizen, does That Make Me One? by ttmacoy: 7:35pm On Jan 14, 2022 |
I think he is eligible for direct citizenship through derivation rather than green card. It would be green card if his dad became a US citizen after he was born not before. Either way he needs to get documents like his birth corticate, marriage certificate of his parents, proof of his dad's US citizenship etc. and reach out to the embassy for more guidance BigDawsNet: The children of a U.S. citizen born abroad can be considered as an "immediate relatives," and therefore eligible for a green card, allowing them to live and work in the United States.... |

Based on that I think you may either be a US citizen already based on derivation or you may be eligible for citizenship. I could not find the relevant page for the US embassy in Nigeria, but this should apply in Nigeria as well. You will need to contact the US embassy to confirm: https://mh.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/derivative-u-s-citizenship-for-adults/This site also provides more information on the different nuances and laws that apply based on when you were born, when you turned 18 etc. e.g. If you were 18 years old or younger on or after February 27, 2001 you may actually already be a citizen and will just need to prove you are yourself and other documents to confirm he is your father etc. and you can apply for a passport. Or there may be other steps required depending on which law is applicable based on your age etc. https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/acquiring-deriving-citizenship-through-parentsI assume you are in good standing with your dad as you will need his support to prove your relationship. Given he was married to your mom I think it should be easy to do if you have the relevant marriage and birth certificates. You will also need to be able to prove your dads citizenship so he will need to provide copies of his US passport etc. hence why I asked if you were in good standing with him. Again I can't find the version for the US embassy in Nigeria but I expect it to be similar aside possibly a few differences but it gives you an idea of the types of documents you will need: https://d2v9ipibika81v.cloudfront.net/uploads/sites/82/CITIZENSHIP-Derivative-Adult-Checklist-FINAL-JAN2020.pdfTbvxl: Yeah he was already a citizen before I was born. |
Travel › Re: My Dad Is An American Citizen, does That Make Me One? by ttmacoy: 5:12pm On Jan 14, 2022 |
It depends on when the father became a citizen because he said the firs wife gave birth in the US and his mother is the second wife which suggest the father was already a citizen by the time he was born which would make him a citizen at birth. otipoju: Google is your best friend. And you can call the us embassy to ask.
Your dad as a citizen will have to apply for a green card for you. You are not a citizen automatically since you were not born there and he became one by naturalization. He would need to sponsor your green card as an Alien Relative.

Was your dad a US citizen when you were born or did he become a US citizen after you were born? If before then yes you might be a citizen, if not then no you will not be a citizen but he may be able to file for you depending on how old you are though it s a fairly long process. Tbvxl: Yes! You nailed it with the bolded, they do not have the same hunger as someone who just came from India or Nigeria who is ready to hussle, and tbh I don't blame them since they have a different perspective to life. According to the hierarchy of needs, when the lower needs like food, water, safety etc. are available then we start to focus on higher needs like self actualization, that is why you will see them decide to take a year off to travel even if means using up all their savings, the experience is worth it to them. That is why they will turn down higher paying jobs for work life balance etc. Bluetherapy: Indians nah bandwagon and access to privileged information dey make them seem like Genius.
Someone mentioned a guy solving Java problem without coding Java before! Are you sure he didn't have OOP knowledge from other programming languages? Are you sure he didn't get expo already from senior colleagues?
I happened to have studied with couple of them and I'm yet to meet that genius Indian. Yes they do have access to information and massive support from their community and that's what distinguishes them, plus the excessive competitiveness. Who no go seem like a genius when you know the script or get access to past questions?. Remove the access to privileged information and you will see the true Indian. Don't forget these Indians sef dey hustle student jobs pass some Africans oh while studying.
Last I checked, Indians didn't invent many of the technology we are benefiting from. Just that the younger generations in the western world no get plenty motivation to study to become a Genius.
That's my experience so far and I think as a Nigerians or any nationality, we can always replicate whatever they are doing. It's all about what's motivating you and gives you assurance that what you're studying is worth it.
The reason for the education standards in Nigeria getting poorer by the day isn't farfetched from many things affecting it. At least it wasn't so during the times of our fathers or grandparents. I can count the countless number of times I read with lantern. Abi how will I learn to code like a Genuis when NEPA dey bring light when I suppose dey sleep or data no dey to search the web? Do the vast majority of Indians live in darkness? Them no get access to better internet than Nigeria?
About Nigerians not helping Nigerians abroad. Let's face the fact, we are losing/ have lost our family values thanks to lack of trust and too much juju. How many people mentioning the fact that other Nigerians didn't help them have helped their immediate family members first? So why expect something from a stranger when you can't even help your extended cousins because of one reasons or the others. Yes Nigerians don't help nigerians abroad e dey why. No be same Nigerians dey set their family members or friends up with shady deals and placing cocaine in the luggage of someone that's trying to help them transport it. Or sabotaging people trying to help them.
I am sure we have all heard or know stories of siblings bringing eachother to abroad and things go South through taking eachother businesses and properties? So why are speaking like we lost our values overnight?
All the Nigerians don't help Nigerians gang, if I message you to help me deliver something to my people in Nigeria will you? How many people fit bring that their uncle pikin? No be then we go remember say the man sef no be better person, hin no be Christian, hin no be dis and dat . Story and fake promises go dey come. Nah to use sense do everything. Heck, no be this same Nigerian some parents no want success for their pikin?
About speaking phoney. English no be our papa and mama language afterall. Why not speak so that people wey get the language go understand us and avoid speaking twice. If you no try speak in a tone they understand, mah your loss oh. Many people have complained about not understanding foreign colleagues to me. They often have to say yes to them or have to politely ask them to come again. These people no like anything wey go stress them and it doesn't cost anything to pronounce things the right way for once. Instead of pronouncing them with hindi, ijebu, Anambra or Kaduna accent
In conclusion, let's look inwards and see where we sef no dey perfect and how make changes beginning from our immediate family. Charity begins at home not on Nairaland. If we all truly help our family members I don't think we will be on Nairaland but we know he no dey possible for many things. |

It's usually the other way round with rent/mortgage being the highest monthly expense by far especially as you may need a bigger house for a family of 5. grafixdon: Location - Lagos, Nigeria 1. House Rent = N30,000 monthly 2. Food/groceries = N120,000 (family of 5) 3. Internet = N12,000 4. Car Gas = N20,000 (2008 Sienna) 5. Kid’s School = N55,000 per kid (3 kids) 6.
