Haha I wish, she can't win the Presidency, and she's what 82 years old. She should retire after this term, she has been in congress since 1987. FalseProphet1: |
Hourly pay doesn’t mean paychecks have to be weekly, it can be weekly, biweekly, every 2 weeks of monthly etc same with salary. pocohantas: |
I'm happy the OP got the visa and I hope he achieves his goals in Poland and beyond, but this story makes me so sad about how bad things are in Nigeria/Africa. All the planning and preparations to get a visa, interviewing you through non transparent glass, they can't even give you eye contact, they can't even organize the collection by giving people appointments rather we have to go everyday and fight for number each morning. Don't you think the process will be better managed in other countries that value their citizens? Again this is not against the OP, I'm happy you have a chance to get out of the mess that is Nigeria, it just saddens me how bad things are in the country. We have a long way to go. |
You have corroborated my main point, the majority of the people with the japa mentality and going for the cheap universities with less competitive entry requirements just to get out of Nigeria and this translates into the job opportunities they get. I disagree with you that the University certificate doesn't have an impact, it has a massive impact. The university matters especially when you need to get jobs with companies that are willing/able to sponsor you for work permits. Not everyone needs to go to LSE, Oxford etc., sure, but the likes of East London University, London Met etc. that target international students are more focused on making money and don't provide enough support for the students they enroll. But again, those schools fit the needs of people with the japa mentality as you mentioned who are not willing to put in the effort and work required to get into better Universities. I do agree that it takes more than your university degree to get the jobs, but it is important especially as an international student where the only thing that is familiar to the recruiter your CV will be the UK university. Once you have broken in and build experience, your degree and Uni matters less, but many of these Nigerian youth are going with little to no experience. Quality also differs by Universities despite the teaching standards you referred to. The person I know studying for an MBA at Northampton was complaining about how the University has been assigning recent graduate international students who were unable to secure jobs to teach them. That is very poor no matter how you want to spin it, an MBA should be taught by people with lots of both academic and professional experience not recent graduates from the University who have been unable to secure jobs. I do not know what the official benchmark is but with the cases of mickey mouse degrees etc. over the years and other scandals that benchmark does not mean much to me. Irrespective of the benchmark you will be competing against bright international students from other countries and local students as well attending better Universities. This same university of Northampton offers an MBA with a 1 year placement option but conveniently ignores the fact that there are not many industrial placement programs aimed at MBA students in the UK. Most industrial placements are for undergraduates students on a 4 year program not MBAs. The typical route is a summer internship leading to an offer for when you finish your MBA, but the school offers the 1 year placement to entice international students on the guise that it is one additional year for them to work in UK. And yet many international students enroll and pay tuition only to get stuck with no support from the school. Time will tell how many students get burned since the UK revamped its immigration system to encourage international students since Brexit, still early days but it doesn't look good from what I am seeing. The UK is deliberately being very liberal with the way they issue student visas and to me it is for money, I am not convinced that majority of those international students will get good jobs that can secure them work permits. kode12: |
Yes you are right many of these universities are aimed at making money from international students, and this isn’t helped given the average Nigerian youth here in nairaland is looking for a cheap university that has easy entry requirements. It’s like someone I know doing MBA at Northampton then wondering why he is not getting good job offers like the better schools like LBS etc, well that’s the price when you seek cheap school with no gmat etc entry requirements so just quick and easy. Many times these students do not understand the way recruitment works, and by the time they figure it out it’s usually late with recruitments programs closed and filled up. Amarathripple0: |

Nigerians I hail thee, it’s now Samoa’s turn. From the little I know of the island it is small so I think it will be hard to blend it and get work etc. Also I assume you mean Samoa proper not American Samoa right. For me I wouldn’t go. It it’s your call and all depends on your situation in Nigeria. Terdue: |
Please stop deceiving people just because you want to make money. GeorgianTravel: |
What do we expect from a travel agent who's moniker is Georgian Travel? GeorgianTravel: |
no it's not, that's a big lie. Also to compare cost you need to compare against income not just absolute numbers. Someone on minimum wage in the UK can pay rent/mortgage, yes not a huge luxury house but still better than the house someone on minimum wage in Nigeria can afford. They can still go on vacation annually, the Nigerian on minimum wage cannot even think of that, and I can go on but my point is the cost has to be adjusted to the income not just comparing this cost x in this country and y in that country hence tat country is cheaper. That's a ridiculous way to compare. staga: |
Why you dey lie? It's not that hard finding a job that pays more than 15k GBP, that is basically minimum wage. Basic job at grocery store job at Tesco etc. will get you a little higher than minimum wage and is easier than bricklaying by a million miles. Someone on minimum wage in the UK will still have a better life than equivalent in Nigeria. Free and better healthcare, free and better education etc. If you have low income with kids you get some benefits none of which is available in Nigeria. You can get child benefits, housing etc. depending on your income and number of household. As an educated person you can get a proper job earning more easier than Nigeria. Not saying it is easy, it still requires work but compared to Nigeria it is easier. EkelediliBuhari: |

Irrespective of if your rich or not he should not be expecting you to pay for stuff for him all the time. Once in a while is fine but this sounds entitled and like he is taking the piss. ObosiUkwalla: |

It's sad he lost his life but surely this is a reason why our kids need to learn to swim early in life to avoid such accidents. The solution is not to say that's it we're not going to swim ever. That's like saying because people die in a car accident then we should not drive again, no it means we should ensure proper safety procedures are put in place and ensure our drivers are trained to drive safely. The issue here is negligence, the teachers were responsible for ensuring the children in their care were taught to swim safely and they failed. MerciMe: |

I do not need to travel to Nicaragua or Bolivia to get a sense of how things are there same I don't have to travel to Afghanistan to know life is hard there. You say the first step is to get resident permit, how will he get the resident permit? Based on what program or laws? Your advice of just go there and an agent will sort you out is a red flag as many times they go and get stuck and can't go backwards or forwards and have to hustling and hiding around to survive. If you truly believe he can get resident permit spell out the process here and make it clear not just go and when you get there an agent will sort you out. yes life in the US can be hard for illegal immigrants, guess what it is worse in countries like Bolivia etc. You can blend in more easily in the US and still find work, you can't in Bolivia hence why you keep saying they will do business. It's up tp the OP but be careful going to certain countries as an illegal immigrant. In reality we should not be going to any country to be illegal but I understand situations force people.

|
Using Nicaragua as a comparison is a very low yardstick, and there's a reason the Africans you mention are living there do business, it is because there are not many other opportunities for them there so they have to focus on business. It all depends on what the person going is after. Countries like Bolivia is not a good country to be an illegal immigrant especially as a black man, and I don't see how Nigerians will qualify to migrate to Bolivia to live and work legally. sliksusan: |
With the amount of Russian propaganda, one would have thought that the Russians would have taken over Ukraine by now. AJSfan: |
I was about to type the exact same thing, you explained it so well. Nairaland could have been a lot more if he was driven but he seems happy to just make some money for himself and stay in the shadows. Nairaland and Facebook were founded about the same time and Facebook now employs over 71,000 people, how many people does Nairaland employ? Moderators like justwise who invest a lot of time on the platform should be well rewarded, I'm not sure but it seems they volunteer. Can you imagine how may other ventures and technologies Nairaland could have helped spawn in the Nigerian tech scene? How much taxes it could have generated to help invest in the country? I can go on and on. Nairaland should be listed by now on the Nigerian Stock Exchange making an impact to peoples investments, pensions etc. You see how wide reaching the impact of such a successful company can be? Facebooks's IPO made over 1000 employees millionaires and many others thousands of dollars through stock awards. The more wealth he shares while working with other innovators the wealthier he will be because yes his share of the pie is smaller, but it is a smaller share of a much larger pie. And this approach does not only apply to Seun and Nairaland, I see it in many other Nigerian ventures, keep it small and focus on me making my money. Employ a few people, pay them peanuts and be the almighty rather than be more open to ideas and suggestions from other smart people and pay them well. Succession planning is another big issue for Nigerian businesses. As you said no man is an island. Seun is definitely a smart guy but he doesn't know it all and in today's world companies need to source innovation both inside and outside the company. Looking at innovation, every few months something new comes out from Facebook, some tweaks and changes/improvements to the platform, new products etc. Nairaland website has been the same for years now. What new products have the released? MathewOG: |
It wasn’t their parents estate, t went on a hike in a public area. How big will their parents estate be that they go on a hike there and how will press get pics of them in the estate? The girls moved to California while their parents live in Hawaii and I think they still maintain their house in DC. pocohantas: |

Please stop abeg, they were both very very stupid. They know how animal rights work there and they not only did what they did which was unnecessary but stupidly uploaded it to social media. What were they expecting? Praise and celebrations? Righteousness2: |
The fact that your response to the UK treating us an an inferior race is to look for another country to run to is proof that we ARE indeed an inferior race. A superior race will say how do we fix our country so we become superior rather than well which other country can we run to. yinkeys: |
Stop being over dramatic, a simple leg chain to bikini is an unrealistic and unreasonable comparison. Yes there are extremes same as everything and moderation is key. The world is advancing way beyond this mentality, companies doing away with ties etc and rigid ways and you are all here still getting angry over leg chain. Goodluck attracting international world class talent to Nigeria with such attitudes. ASPIREX: |
You Nigerians are a small minded judgmental bunch, I do not like or have leg chains but it's not my business of someone else does. All this holier than thou behavior is ridiculous and can only happen in a country where people are desperate. Obviously moderation is key especially for some occupations but a leg chain, really? If Nigeria was at a place where there was abundance of jobs and people had choice rather than desperation trust me you will drop that rule so quick if not you will do your work yourself. This bullying and subjugation only works because the populace are hungry and desperate. This is the same country where employer will offer N50k and tell you you have to work 7am - 8pm Mon - Sat and you will shout yessir is that enough? Try all that in a country that works and see how quickly you will go out of business. Bigredmachine: |
He is a hero to his people? Really? Hero ko hero ni. He is dictator simple. No one should be in power for over 20 years, NO ONE so pleas drop the hero bullshit. Africa should stop being life support and step-up, continue to use colonization for an excuse is the reason why we will continue to be the footmat of the world. Look at China in how any years and we are still there playing the blame game. Again all you have said does not justify anything Putin is doing today so stop trying to link it back to colonization. An your comment about Gaitling guns etc. shows why we were colonized, we were weaker simple. Those western countries were colonized by Russia, fought back and got stronger, Africa still blaming in 2022. BKayy: |
While I agree innocent Russians will be hit hard, Putin will also be hit. Oligarchs losing money impact their loyalty to him and also increases chances he can be removed. A dictator can control people easier when they are fed, when they are hungry its easier for them to turn against him. Unfortunately this is the best option aside a full on war which will have more impact on both Russians and other countries citizens who will be caught in the cross fire. No solution with no suffering unfortunately. chatinent: |
Are you done with your nonsense? Russia may not have colonized Africa but they colonized other regions so same thing. How long can you be used as fuel for a dictator using historic colonization as excuse to defend and support a dictator like Putin. Well-done. BKayy: |
Na lie, the bulk of the inflation was as a result of low interest rates and unprecedented stimulus pumped into the economy due to the covid shutdown and it will go down due to increase in interest rates which were already expected even before Putin's war and other measures to source oil from other countries. It's not only Russia that sells oil and gas, and the US also produces oil btw. Russian inflation rises by 2.2% in just one week, let's see how high it will be by end of year when the economy has been destroyed. I only pity the innocent Russian people who are not in support of his crazy war. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-03-09/next-shock-is-here-for-russia-as-inflation-rips-through-economy The pain may force Russians and the oligarchs to finally get rid of Putin. For comparison the US benchmark interest rate is 0.25% compared to Russia which just doubled to nearly 20% so even if the US increase to 1% or max 2% it will go a long way to curb inflation. Russia on the other hand has limited options. Russians are losing jobs etc, how will they pay 20% interest on their loans, mortgage etc.? Rexymania: |
The west have not shot themselves in the foot, it was always known that there will be short term pain but the pain is very very minor compared to the pain Ukrainians are facing so its a pain they are willing to bear, and it is short term. The energy supply chain will change and adapt and Russia will lose out long term. Russia economy is dependent on energy sales so lets see how they cope, China cannot replace all the other countries who bought from them and also China will want to mitigate its risk and will not buy 100% from Russia.
