Literature › Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Nnedi Okorafor, Nominated For Nobel Prize by TundeBricklayer(op): 9:26pm On Jul 21, 2018
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Nnedi Okorafor, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o nominated For Alternative Nobel Prize for Literature Award
Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Chimamanda Adichie and Nnedi Okorafor are the 3 African writers nominated for an alternative Nobel Prize for Literature.

Following the shocking cancellation of this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature on grounds of a sexual scandal, a group consisting of 100 Swedish cultural figures including writers, actors and a rapper have come together to create an Alternative award.

The Guardian reports that the New Academy opened the doors for Swedish Librarians to nominate authors from across the world who have “told the story of “humans in the world”. The 46 nominees consist of our very own Chimamanda Adichie, Kenyan writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o and Nigerian/American SciFi writer Nnedi Okorafor.

Other nominees include Cormac McCarthy, Margaret Atwood, Amos Oz, Haruki Murakami, Sofi Oksanen, Olga Tokarczuk, J.K. Rowling singer Patti Smith and a strong list of other renowned writers.

Another intriguing part of the New Academy prize is people can actually vote for their favorite author! Voting opened this week on their website.

The New York Times is reporting that voting closes on August 14. After which three finalists will be selected from the votes and announced on the 14th of October. The librarians will also get the opportunity to select a fourth finalist.” A panel made up of a literature professor, two librarians and two literary editors will then choose the winner“ , The New York Times adds.

The winner will receive 1 Million Kronor which is about $112,000. A banquet will also be held in the winner’s owner just like the Nobel Laureate.

Mediocre projects are all over Anambra but we have no choice than to appreciate the projects. When you tell them the truth, they will say you are an Afonja or you are from Abia or Imo. All the streets constructed by Obiano have open gutters without space for planting trees and flowers that is why the state is always looking like a prison and very dirty. If you go to Anambra, you may be disappointed with what you will see. Onitsha and Awka are very far from uniqueness and beauty except you what to view their aerial views from the top of a house or bridge. This is the main reason why Anambra can never be more beautiful than Enugu and Imo and I won't be surprised if Onitsha is listed as the dirtiest city in the world for the second time because of its dirty and poisonous air. I was also shocked when Demographia Urban did not even recognize Awka as one of the 28 major urban cities in Nigeria.

Politics › When I Was Working In The Southeast I Saw What The Igbo Could Do - Akinwumi by TundeBricklayer(op): 12:03pm On Jul 21, 2018
You later became an Executive Director at NITEL, where you retired. What lessons can you share over the course of your career and life?

Trust God, be straightforward and love your neighbour as yourself. If people have these virtues, they will put their country first in all they do and their lives will be meaningful. It’s unfortunate many people don’t put their country first. If so, how can pensioners not be paid their dues after working for so many years? How can people who just found their way to political leadership amass oil blocs for themselves and be making billions of naira? It’s because of selfishness.

When I was in England, I stumbled upon a research that a lot of great countries had their development after a war. The US became so great after the civil war; there was no civil war in Britain and that is why they are not fantastically great. The man who developed rocket technology and space science (Wernher von Braun) did it after the American civil war. He was a German Jew.

During that time, it wasn’t easy for the Nazi regime to spy Britain because it is an island, surrounded by the sea. If you wanted to cross over to the country, you would be seen, unlike Switzerland and France. So, Hitler called Braun and asked how they could spy over Britain? Braun told Hitler not to worry. He developed rockets and they were sending them to Britain without leaving Germany. If not because of America, Britain would have been wiped out. They cried to America and because of the experience the US had during the civil war, they were able to stop the bombardment of the rockets. The Americans then called Braun and asked how he was able to develop the rockets. They took him to their country and that was how they decided to work with him. His efforts made America to send man to Moon in 1969.

Nigeria would have developed a similar technology if not that they advised us wrongly. After the civil war, what Nigeria should have done was to call the Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo and reason together. We could have asked how the Igbo man built the guns and bombs used during the war. But the White didn’t want us to reason that way, they knew they wouldn’t be able to sell their wares to us, so they dispersed us. The Igbo developed the radio and others and they are still using the residual knowledge to develop some things today. When I was working in the South-East and I saw what the Igbo could do, I knew why what happened to us happened. We would have gone very far and would probably be at the same level with South Korea today. They disbanded the people then – their scientists, the engineers, all of them. These are the problems. We didn’t think too.

However, there was still the problem that amalgamation created for us. Today, the Northerners would have been in a worse condition because they had no access to the sea, nothing whatsoever then, unlike the South and the West. The White had seen this in 1914. They also did it that the population of the Northerners was twice that of the South and West so they could control the polity, which is why we can’t win elections. Whenever we are talking about elections, Yoruba won’t get along with the Igbo, the Igbo won’t also get along with Yoruba, but in the North, they always support themselves, especially when they are all in for a particular cause. Having worked with the Northerners, I can say they are more politically sophisticated than the rest of us.

A young man got more than he bargained for after he decided to play a fast one at a Bible shop in Anambra. The suspected thief was seriously dealt with as he was caught red handed while stealing bibles in a shop earlier today.

A social media user who lives in Onitsha, Anambra state, shared a picture of the suspect after he was beaten well by those who nabbed him.

The question being asked by the Facebook user is, 'Was it right for them to have beaten him for stealing the Word of God which talks about forgiveness?

They are ranting also attacking Igbos for supporting Fayoso, this is the same set of people that disguised themselves as Igbos, some with Igbo monikers during Anambra state election just to support the candidate of APC Tony Nwaoye, after the election APGA won 21 Lga, we all celebrated, we didn't attack them or call them out, same set of people that brought so much hatred during 2015 general election, majority of Igbos supported Jonathan, some Igbos supported APC, after the election many of them were busy attacking Igbos online and offline that Igbos will suffer for exercising our rights, after three years of Buhari I wonder which region is suffering huh Last statistis of poverty and malnutrition that treaded Igbos were the least affected region, southeast is the most safest region in Nigeria according to UN, I wonder those that were rejoicing and expression of a strong emotion why poverty, crimes blood shedding is still high in their regions huh I don't know why west and north see election as do or die affair, same thing happened during Ondo state election they were busy accusing and attacking Igbos for supporting PDP candidate, when Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu won majority of them were busy insulting Igbos, now he is governor can one mention any remarkable thing he has achieve huh Ondo state is oil producing state he is owing workers salary for months now, Ebonyi state which receives the smallest allocation from FG has done more both infrastructures and workers well fair. Fayoso is your son, if you guys what to kill him because he belong to another political party that you guys cup of tea, we all know you guys don't love yourselves, just pretence, it was the same hatred made you guys lose Kwara to Sokoto caliphate. Fayemi is now governor we are watching his actions and inactions, I wish those that voted for or against him all the best, he is the governor of Ekiti state not any eastern states, it's all politics nothing more.
