A Kaduna State Magistrate Court, on Wednesday, remanded one Muhammad Isah SaIeh in custody for allegedly having carnal knowledge of two of his underage daughters in Rigasa, Kaduna State.

The magistrate, Musa Lawal, further adjourned the case to March 30 for mention, pending when the accused will have been served with new charges from the State High Court.

The prosecution counsel, Suleiman Ibrahim Kufena, had told the court that fresh charges had been filed before the High Court. However, the defendant whose lawyer, Murtala Baba Ibi, was absent in court said though he had not been personally served, he was not aware if a court order had been served to his lawyer.

The defendant also told the court that his lawyer was representing him at the Sharia Court, Rigasa, where his wife and mother of his two children had earlier filed a suit of rape and incest against him.

The magistrate explained that because the case of rape and incest was a capital offence, it required a higher court to handle it, adding that: “If the defendant had been served, then I would have struck out the case for the High court to take over, but I cannot do that since the defendant is yet to be served. And therefore, I cannot release you; you will be remanded in prison custody.”

Daily Trust reports that the offence of rape contravenes section 258 of the Kaduna State Penal Code 2017, and that of incest contravenes section 370 of the same law. Penalty for rape is life imprisonment while that of incest is imprisonment for a term of not less than 14 years.

Our correspondent also gathered that the Kaduna State Government, through the Commissioner of Social Development, Hajiya Hafsat Baba, had made a plea before a Sharia Court in Rigasa to gain custody of the two minors.

The Lagos State Government has affirmed that the Chinese citizen presented at the Reddington Hospital, Ikeja on Wednesday on suspicion of being infected with Coronavirus has tested negative.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, made this known through a press statement on Thursday, noting that “the likelihood of COVID-19 infection in this particular patient was very low and the conclusion of investigations and sophisticated testing confirmed that no case of Coronavirus exists in Lagos State till date.”

“I would like to reassure Lagosians that our vigilance levels are very high and we are putting more measures in place to safeguard the state,” he said.

While giving details of the investigations, Abayomi explained that “the Ministry of Health’s attention was drawn to a suspected case of Coronavirus at Reddington Hospital, a private health facility located at Ikeja but from our investigations, we gathered that a Chinese citizen who arrived Nigeria from China seven weeks ago was presented at Reddington Hospital yesterday (Wednesday) complaining about fever. The hospital, in keeping with the advisory we earlier issued, correctly maintained a high index of suspicion, isolated the patient and reported the case to the Ministry.

“We took up the case, transferred the patient to the State Isolation Unit at the Mainland hospital which is our specialised infectious disease hospital. His blood samples were taken to the Virology laboratory for analysis and it came out negative.”

Abayomi appealed to citizens to refrain from posting unverified news that could cause unnecessary anxiety in the community and urged residents to disregard any information about the novel Coronavirus that does not emanate from official communication channels of the Ministry of Health or his office.

An 18-year-old girl, Abosede, said to be a sex worker, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend to death during an argument over N3,000.

The incident occurred in a community in Sagamu area of Ogun State.

There were different accounts as to how life was snuffed out of the deceased, Aliu Ibrahim.

A version of the account alleged that the suspect was a commercial sex worker who bargained for N3,000 with the deceased for a night, over the weekend.

Trouble, however, erupted when the deceased was said to have refused to pay the suspect, an action that resulted in a verbal confrontation between the duo.

The quarrel degenerated into a fight, during which the suspect allegedly thrust a knife into the deceased chest.

However, the suspect, during interrogation, told the police that the deceased was her boyfriend.

She admitted to have spent the night with him, adding that when leaving next day, she attempted to collect her boyfriend’s N3,000 that was inside his pocket.

She said: “He said he would not give me all the money and we started quarreling. He was the one that brought the knife. While dragging it with him, it stabbed him in the chest.”

A spokesman for Ogun State Police Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, explained that the suspected sex worker “was arrested following a distress call received from Seriki Huasa in Shagamu.

“The report we got was that the suspect and her deceased boyfriend were arguing over N3,000 as a result of which they were dragging a knife with each other.

“Eventually the girl used the knife to stab the boyfriend in his chest, which resulted in his death.

“On receiving the distress call, the DPO of Shagamu, SP Okiki Agunbiade, detailed his detectives to the scene where the teenager was apprehended. The blood-stained knife which she used to stab the deceased was also recovered.

“The corpse has been released to the deceased’s relations on their demand to bury him in accordance with Islamic rights.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, CIID, for further investigation and prosecution.”
