The stay -at -home directive from the Federal Government to civil servants , which is meant to mitigate the adverse effects of the ravaging COVID - 19 pandemic is just timely and reasonable . The Federal and various state governments have closed down institutions , schools , and offices as a preventive measure to curtail the spread of the deadly virus. Hence , parents , children , and family members are compelled to stay at home for a month or thereabout to encourage social distancing . Staying at home has a burden . There is a need to solve another serious challenge at hand . For schoolchildren, staying at home means less academic work and more time for pleasure and extra- curricular activities. This may eventually affect their academic work by the time schools resume . As planned by several public schools , the deployment of online teaching facilities would help to keep teachers and their pupils busy . Ordinarily , when people are busy working , they think less of food , even though they still find the time to fill their stomachs. But staying at home and doing far less work tends to make them eat more . Normally , people would have to spend more money to keep body and soul together . Not to defeat the essence of staying at home, governments at all levels should pay workers ’ salaries without delay . They should not wait till the end of the month before doing so because of the peculiarity of this period. This would enable them to purchase basic needs , otherwise staying home and doing nothing could be counter - productive. Employers of labour in the private sector should also endeavour to pay the outstanding salaries as many workers employees are being owed several months ’ unpaid salaries . Apart from food and other consumables , many homes hardly enjoy power supply . Many Nigerians often resort to alternative sources of power , such as the use of generators , inverters , and solar . Aside from this , they require power to pump water , watch television , charge mobile telephones and to operate other electronic devices . They also need to monitor the news in the media and get updated on developments on the COVID - 19 pandemic. To make life bearable for the people , the authorities should ensure that there is at least uninterrupted supply of electricity for a certain period daily . Regulatory agencies should ensure that artificial scarcity of petroleum products is prevented otherwise the suffering of the people will become unbearable . This is because unscrupulous persons are used to hiding under emergencies to exploit their fellow citizens by hoarding petroleum products and sell at cut -throat prices . Nigerians spend a huge amount of money on fuel , diesel , kerosene and gas. It is disheartening to note that despite the reduction in the pump price of petrol from N145 to N 125 , many petrol filling stations have either refused to adjust to the new price regime or have complied , but the volume of fuel being dispensed is not commensurate with the correct pricing . Government ministries , departments and agencies in charge of public health and safety should not go to sleep simply because the people have been sent home. They should continue to put in place , sufficient , realistic, and sustainable programmes of action to end the scourge , which could be a time bomb waiting to explode, if not well- managed . This should not be allowed to happen . The confinement should enable the relevant authorities to holistically address what has become a global problem . Public officials should stop playing politics with questionable statistics that they churn out to the people to give the impression that a lot of work is being done ; that casualty is abysmally low , and that adequate equipment are on ground to curtail the viral spread . Honesty and openness is what is required at this period and not deceit , false claims and propaganda that will help no one. Law enforcement agents should ensure that they keep a tab on peoples ’ movements, bearing in mind that some people are just restless and can barely stay indoors . Appropriate punishment should be meted out to violators . As additional measures are to be unfolded , the government should be realistic in what is communicated to the people to ensure smooth compliance . In the next few days , there is the likelihood that many people will switch- over to social media to keep themselves busy . This should expectedly increase activity on the new media . Avoid posting and reposting fake , unverified and misleading information that may likely cause more harm to society. Most of the information disseminated in social media appears to be incorrect . A potent way of ending the spread of falsehood is not to re - share anything without verification or authentication . We should be our brother’s keeper by being more responsive , observant and caring . We should cooperate with health officials by sticking to approved guidelines and instructions . Reporting any suspected cases of coronavirus to designated offices , telephone numbers and social media contacts would go a long way in reducing the spread of the disease . Parents and guardians should monitor their children and wards more closely because of the tendency to engage in illegal and immoral acts . Apart from the idleness that would be experienced by these young chaps, the urge to wanting to try new things and misbehave cannot be ruled out . Scrutiny and spontaneous checks on their activities should be taken seriously at this moment. On a positive note , rather than see the confinement in a negative light, it should serve as a good opportunity for family members to stay closer more than before, discuss and sort out issues . This period should spur people to take well -deserved rest , read , write , reflect deeply , be creative and observe penance , especially the faithful that are currently observing the Lenten season , to pray for quick end to coronavirus , pray for Nigeria in distress , and also pray against bribery and corruption in Nigeria . The reason for this is simple . We badly need divine intervention to solve the myriads problems facing the nation and humanity in general , irrespective of religion , ethnicity, tribe and race . It is hoped that the sit- at- home order would soon be over . This optimism can only translate into reality when we all do the needful . COVID - 19 would certainly come and go.

Following the recent confirmation of COVID-19 in Osun State announced by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in the early hours of Wednesday, the Osun State governor, Adegboyega Oyetola has said he has subjected himself and wife to coronavirus test and it came negative. The governor said this while briefing journalists at the Government Secretariat, Abere, Osogbo on the first confirmed case in the State. Oyetola said, “Considering the fact that I was in Abuja for the better part of last week, as a way of leading by example, I have also subjected myself to test. My wife, because of her recent travel history also subjected herself to test. Both came back negative. Oyetola said the index case involved a returnee from the United Kingdom and he was tested at NCDC accredited center in Ede. His words, “My dear people of Osun State, recall that I addressed you about two days ago concerning the measures we had taken to wage the war against Coronavirus. “Sadly, I want to say that we have the first confirmed case of the novel Coronavirus in the State. It was confirmed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC. “The case is a returnee from the United Kingdom and is currently receiving treatment. “The sample was tested at NCDC accredited Testing Centre, which is the African Centre of Excellence in Genomics of Infectious Diseases, Ede, Osun, and the result returned positive on Tuesday night. “However, this confirmed case is not the first one we will be subjected to an investigation. But so far all the others have tested negative. “The Government had contacted the family of the patient and has since commenced contact tracing to identify people who might have been in contact with the confirmed case.” “To this end, I want to passionately encourage all returnees from UK, US, Europe, the West African Coast and indeed other high-risk countries to self-isolate and submit themselves to test, so as to assist the government in containing the spread of the virus. The Emergency number to call is 293. Other numbers are 08035025692, 08033908772 and 08056456250. “I want to urge you all to continue to observe necessary precautionary measures by regularly washing your hands with water and soap and also maintain the prescribed social distance. As part of our efforts to curb the spread of Coronavirus in the State, we have set up holding centres and the one in Asubiaro Specialist Hospital, Osogbo, is up and running, to isolate and treat suspected and reported cases of the virus in the State. Also speaking at the briefing, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamontu said, twenty Judges who returned from United Arab Emirate are on self-isolation. Giving more details about the confirmed cases he said, “I spoke with him while he was in Lagos while he was on his way and he promised to get in touch with me as soon as he gets to Osun State. When he gets Ikire, he continuously rings my phones till he gets to Osogbo.” “He never hid from the check, the case was the self-reported case because he wanted to be sure if he had contacted the virus. He doesn’t want to go home to avoid infecting his family with it. He has been cooperating so far” https://thenationonlineng.net/covid-19-oyetola-wife-test-negative/

The Rivers State Government has announced the closure of air, sea and land borders into the state with effect from Thursday, March 26, 2020. Governor Nyesom Wike, who made this announcement in a state broadcast on Wednesday, said the move was to further check the spread of coronavirus to the state. The PUNCH reports that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had recently banned international flights into the country's airports, including the Port Harcourt International Airport. However, local flights were allowed to operate at the airports. But Wike threatened that passengers would not be allowed into the state after landing at the Port Harcourt airport. He said, “The State Security Council has taken the following painful decisions: With effect from 6pm on Thursday, March 26, 2020, the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, will not be open to air traffic. “While we may not have the right to stop flights from entering Port Harcourt, we cannot allow anybody coming from the airport to enter our state. We are confident that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and other federal agencies will cooperate with us. All land and sea borders will be closed. “Vehicular movements in an out of the state have been banned. In essence, no vehicle will leave Rivers State for any other state and no vehicle will be allowed to enter the state. New measures will be put in place until further notice. “Let me reiterate that security agencies have been empowered to strictly enforce this directive. There will be no room for sacred cows because the virus is no respecter of persons.” The governor earlier announced the closure of the biggest market in Port Harcourt – Oil Mill Market. https://punchng.com/breaking-coronavirus-we-wont-allow-passengers-into-rivers-wike-tells-airlines-faan/

When Private Innocent Okafor was sentenced to death by a military court alongside 51 other soldiers for refusing to fight against the dreaded Boko Haram sect, his son, Chukwuebuka, was just three months old. Private Innocent was at the battle front when his wife gave birth to their son and he had great plans for his naming and dedication ceremonies whenever he could get a pass to visit his family back in Lagos. His wife, Comfort, had sent him photographs of the new born baby and Private Innocent had named the baby, Chukwuebuka, meaning ‘God is mighty,’ and looked forward to when he would see his new bundle of joy and cradle him in his arms. But that joy and anticipation was truncated if not out rightly denied when he and other soldiers were rounded up and charged for mutiny because they refused to go into battle because their superiors did not provide the adequate weapons for them to fight the insurgents. The soldiers felt their commanders sent them to their deaths with inferior weapons against the rebels who had superior firepower and had continued to kill Nigerian soldiers and civilians with reckless abandon. Now, five years after and with no hope of a respite, Private Innocent managed to send this passionate and heart wrenching letter to his son on the occasion of his fifth birthday. “My dear son, Chukwuebuka, I know you will get to read this letter when you come of age. I also know that one day, you will get answers to questions about your father who paid the supreme price for the unity of Nigeria. You may not get to see me or know me but what I want you to know is that I love you with every beat of my heart. I dream about you every night and I see your face every minute of the day. I have not had the joy of seeing you, watching you grow, carrying you in my arms, seeing you take your baby steps, carrying you on my neck for a walk on the beach, or giving you the love a father should give to his son. I have not had the opportunity of seeing you grow your first set of teeth, witnessing you utter your first words or hear you call me daddy. I have not had the pleasure of playing horse and rider with you or teaching you the lessons of life or telling you the history of your family but you should know that I did not deliberately deny you these little pleasures. The country I pledged to serve with all my might denied me this opportunity but I know you will grow into a strong man and know that I did what I did for the unity of this great nation that has failed me. My son, you will remain my pride, my joy and my happiness and I know you will be proud of me and what I did when you become a man. I did what I did because we were being sent to our deaths by our superior officers who hid sophisticated weapons from us but gave us outdated arms to battle a sect that had the latest in weaponry. We had to tell then that enough was enough and we had to let them know we were not sacrificial lambs. But what did we get in the end? Betrayal, treachery, deceit and disloyalty from the men who were meant to protect us. Men who were meant to stand up for our rights turned against us and set us up to be killed so that we would not leak their secrets. We were treated like dregs of the earth and we now hear that the same people we fought to dislodge from Nigerian territories are being rehabilitated, given a good life and released back into the society while we sit in our cells waiting for our fates. I am currently on death row and I do not know if any reprieve will come my way and those of my colleagues but as a soldier, I am not in any way bitter. I am a soldier and I have always been a soldier and our mantra is to be prepared at all times. You will grow up to be a man and even if you want to become a soldier in future, I give you the permission to be whatever you want to be. Chukwuebuka, your name means ‘God is Mighty’ and I hold strongly to that belief that He alone is mighty. Not even the power of the gun or the hangman’s noose can take that away. You are my pride, the first seed from my loins, the one who will carry on our family name and I know you will do this with your shoulders raised high. We are a proud people and I know you will not let us down. Promise me that you will protect your mother, that you will love her and give her security. If she decides to get married and have other children, I want you to take them as your siblings, love and care for them as the older brother and give them everything you have. Chukwuebuka, my son, I cannot write a very long letter because of the conditions I am facing here. I have a lot in my heart to tell you but for now, this should be enough. Chukwuebuka, please, as you read this letter, I forbid you to cry because you are a man and men are not supposed to cry. Yes, you are a man and I see you as one. Be strong for me and your mother and if God says I will come out of this place, even if it takes 20 years, I will still give you back your childhood. Be strong boy and be a good son who will make your daddy and mummy proud. Your beloved daddy, Private Innocent Okafor.”

Has WHO confirm this yet? |
Seven hundred and ninety three people died of the coronavirus in Italy yesterday , taking the country’s total deaths from the pandemic to 4,825. The figure represents the highest day-to-day rise in the number of deaths. Infection rose by 6,557 to 53578 within the same period. Spain announced 324 new coronavirus deaths as number of cases rose to 24,926. According to the health ministry COVID-19 deaths went up to 1,326 from 1,002 in the space of 24 hours. Britain recorded 53 deaths yesterday alone. But China, where the pandemic started, did not record any fresh case for the third day in a row. Despite extensive measures to prevent the disease from spreading, Italy remains the worst affected country in Europe. Italy’s fatalities are said to account for 38.3 per cent of the world’s total. Video from inside the city’s main hospital showed patients lined up in a narrow ward, struggling for breath as doctors and nurses moved from one beeping machine to the next. It has been on lockdown since March 12, when public gatherings were banned and most stores shuttered. Police stormed the streets of Rome yesterday, checking documents and fining those outside without a valid reason, such as buying groceries. In Bergamo, in the northern Italian region at the epicentre of the outbreak, cemeteries are now overwhelmed too. In one town, authorities are trying a new tactic. The residents of Vo, near Padua – perhaps the first Coronavirus ‘hotspot’ in Italy – have been tested and isolated and then retesting and retesting every one of the 3,300 inhabitants. Authorities have found the number of infections has stopped rising. Spain announces 324 deaths Spain which trails Italy in Europe in terms of infection yesterday announced 324 new coronavirus deaths. The number of cases surged nearly 5,000 up to 24,926. Spain’s Health Ministry said COVID-19 deaths had risen to 1,326 from 1,002 within 24 hours. Spain has issued lockdown orders for some 46 million people who are only permitted to leave their homes for essential work, food shopping, medical reasons or to walk the dog. The lockdown notwithstanding, more than 31,000 people have been fined for flouting the lockdown rules announced by Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez penultimate Saturday. Another 350 have been arrested nationwide according to Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska. A South American man was arrested by police in Malaga on Thursday near the city’s Maria Zambrano train station after going up to strangers in the street and hugging them without their consent. On Tuesday a 40-year-old woman was arrested near the northern Spanish city of Zaragoza for spitting at police officers called to her house following a disturbance. A coronavirus test on her came back positive on Thursday. No new cases in China for third day in a row China reported no new domestic cases of the coronavirus for a third consecutive day yesterday. However, it confirmed the highest yet increase in infections imported from abroad. The rate of infection in China has fallen for weeks while the rest of the world steps up measures to try and battle the pandemic. All 41 of new confirmed cases in China were imported from overseas, the country’s National Health Commission said, bringing the total number of such cases to 269. There were no locally transmitted cases, for the third consecutive day. Life in Wuhan, the centre of the coronavirus outbreak, is beginning to return to normal. Some 56 million people in Wuhan and surrounding Hubei province underwent the lockdown in late January, but authorities there are reportedly progressively easing the travel restrictions as cases have dwindled. “Wuhan provides hope for the rest of the world that even the most severe situation can be turned around,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in Geneva on Friday. “Of course, we must exercise caution; the situation can reverse. But the experience of cities and countries that have pushed back this coronavirus gives hope and courage to the rest of the world.” China announced on Thursday that for the first time since the coronavirus outbreak started, it had no local transmissions of Covid-19, a major milestone in the country’s fight against the pandemic. But China is now having to step up controls to tackle infections brought in from other countries, with another 41 cases reported Saturday – the highest one-day tally yet. Beijing and Shanghai were the main entry points for the returnees, many of whom are students studying abroad, according to official reports. They have come back after many campuses in the United States and Europe shut down to stem rapidly rising infection rates there.
