Facebook is tracking you. It is tracking your location; it is tracking your online activities; it is tracking the websites you visited; it is tracking what you searched on Google. And sadly, it is easy for third-parties to mine all the data Facebook collected from tracking you – and I. Cambridge Analytica just showed the world how easy it is to extract the personal data of Facebook users. For you that might be thinking how possible and does Facebook really track my online activities, let me give you an instance that confirms Facebook is tracking you. Have you ever noticed that after checking out a product on Jumia, you start seeing Jumia showing you the advert of that product on Facebook – and other websites you visit? That is the work of Facebook tracking your browsing history and online activities – and giving advertisers the room to retarget you. It is not only Facebook that tracks users online activities. All giant internet companies do it, and Google is responsible for showing you the Jumia advert retargeting you on every website you visit. But the case with Facebook is that the social network is not doing much to protect the data and privacy of its users – and that is the reason Cambridge Analytica was able to mine the data of over 50 million Facebook users. So how do you stop Facebook from tracking your browsing history? This post would answer the question, and show you how to stop Facebook from tracking your location, what you search on Google, and the websites you visit. How to Stop Facebook Tracking Your Browsing History In response to the Facebook data breach, Firefox has released an extension that helps you stop Facebook tracking your browsing history. The name of the extension is Facebook Container, and what the extension does it to “contain” Facebook into the tab on which it is opened. Facebook knows what you searched on Google and the websites you visit by listening to the other tabs you open on your browser when you are logged in to the social network. So to stop Facebook tracking your browsing history, download and install Facebook Container extension. Once the extension is enabled on your Mozilla Firefox, Facebook would be restricted to its tab. The extension also prevents you from using Facebook to register or login to other websites. After downloading and installing the extension, your Facebook account would be logged out, and when you try to open the social network again, you would notice that the tab on which Facebook is opened is highlighted in blue. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/How-to-Stop-Facebook-from-Tracking-You-Everywhere-You-Go-Online.png This means the social network has been contained – and can’t track your online activities again. Note: When Facebook Container is enabled on your Firefox browser, it not only prevents you from using Facebook to register and login to other websites but also blocks you from liking and commenting on websites using the Facebook embedded feature. This blocking is a part of the ways the extension stops Facebook from tracking your online activities. Source: https://www.techrabytes.com/how-to-stop-facebook-tracking-your-browsing-history/ |

CamSoda, the adult toys company, is at it again. First, it introduced the idea of replacing fingerprint with pen*sprint, for adult contents lovers. Now the company is rolling out a vibrator button that allows ordering Domino's Pizza after ladies are done satisfying themselves. The idea is that when ladies are done and need to revitalise, the button can be pushed to request a pizza. CamSoda already has it vibrators in the market, so what it is really introducing is an attachment to the vibrators. The attachment, called RubGrub, is a 3D-printed button purposefully designed for the Lovense Nora vibrators. To use RubGrub, owners will connect the button to their smartphone through Bluetooth, and then supply their card details and delivery address, so that the Domino's Pizzaman will deliver the pizza just after the end of the action. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/CamSoda-RubGrub.jpg At the moment, RubGrub can only order Domino's Pizza; however, CamSoda said it is working on adding other fast food options very soon. When asked whether it partnered with CamSoda to put its pizza on RubGrub, Domino's executives said they heard it in the news, too. The executives claimed the company at no point worked with CamSoda to arrange the ordering of its pizzas through the CamSoda's RubGrub button. If you were to buy RubGrub alone, it costs $20. Buying it with the Lovense Nora vibrator costs $120. Source: https://www.techrabytes.com/this-vibrator-button-orders-dominos-pizza-when-the-action-is-over/ |

As the year runs to an end, the worst passwords of 2017 have been published – so that you can change your passwords if they are among. You should create strong passwords and, if you don’t mind the extra work, you should add two-factor authentication. Topping the list of the worst passwords of 2017 is 123456 – and, like seriously, this is too simple; why would someone take numbers in consecutive series as a password. If your password is 123456, sincerely, you deserve a cane – and I don’t mind coming to beat you on your bed. At the second place of the worst passwords of 2017 is password. Imagine, some people are using the word “password” itself as their password. This is ridiculous. Other worst passwords include names of sports, car models, movies, and animals. Funny enough, some people are even using the phrase “iloveyou” as their password – they must really love their password. Here is the list of the top 25 worst passwords of 2017, as compiled by SplashData, a company that develops password management utilities. 1. 123456 2. password 3. 12345678 4. qwerty 5. 12345 6. 123456789 7. letmein 8. 1234567 9. football 10. iloveyou 11. admin 12. welcome 13. monkey 14. login 15. abc123 16. starwars 17. 123123 18. Dragon 19. passw0rd 20. master 21. hello 22. freedom 23. whatever 24. qazwsx 25. trustno1 All these kinds of passwords are too simple; even the most inexperienced of hackers using the most primitive brutal force script could guess the passwords right. I know creating and memorising strong passwords aren’t easy, but it isn’t a rocket – or drone – science; in my post on how to create strong a password and remember it, I suggested patterns you can use to create strong passwords and never forget them. In as much as you tell nobody your password patterns, you can keep generating strong passwords for every website you registered on and never forget them. Beta still, you can use the free version of password management tools; they are fantastic and sync across devices. In the meantime, if your passwords are among the above-listed 25, quickly go and change them, I am begging you, as hackers would start running them against accounts, now that the passwords are in the public. The 2018 edition of the Mobile World Congress will hold in Barcelona in February, and information has been gathered that Samsung is planning to unveil the S9 at the event. And by calculation, the Samsung S9 is likely to be released into the market in March, immediately after the event. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Samsung-S9.jpg Unlike the Samsung S8 and its elder brother, the S8+, which drums and gongs were beaten to celebrate their launch, the Samsung S9 wouldn’t receive any ceremonial launch, according to reports. The reports also claim that Samsung has placed orders for every component required in the manufacturing of the phone, and by January, the mass production of the S9 will start, so as to meet the unveiling at the end of February, when Mobile World Congress will hold. As regards specifications and designs, the S9 is reported to going to inherit the designs of the S8. The standard Samsung Galaxy S9 would come with a single camera, while the Galaxy S9 + would come with dual cameras. The default operating system would be the Android 8.0 Oreo, and the price of the phones should be the same as the S8 and S8+. At the moment, Samsung has neither confirmed nor rebutted the reports, and the official release date of the phones hasn’t been confirmed. Earlier this year, Vivo signed a partnership agreement with FIFA, for it to be one of the official sponsors of the next two world cups, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. For this reason, the smartphone maker is releasing a special Vivo X20 World Cup Edition. According to reports, the phone had earlier been unveiled just before the Russian 2018 World Cup draw, at an event held in Moscow, the capital of Russia. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Vivo-X20-World-Cup-Edition-2.jpg The design and specifications of the Vivo X20 World Cup Edition are the same as that of mother Vivo X20. The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 660 processor, has a 6.01-inch screen, has a 64 GB internal memory and a 4GB RAM. And like the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Limited Edition, which has the logo of Star Wars towards the bottom of the back cover, the Vivo X20 World Cup Edition also has the Russia 2018 World Cup logo at the bottom of its back cover. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Vivo-X20-World-Cup-Edition.jpg From all the available information, the phone is designed for FIFA officials and will be the official phone for them at the next year World Cup. Last year, Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, was in Lagos, where he was hosted by tech companies in the country. During his visit, he donated $24 Million to Andela, a tech company that trains developers. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Facebook.png The gesture showed Mark is interested in the Nigerian tech industry, and going by the publication on GADGET NDTV, Facebook is planning to open a “community hub space” in Nigeria next year. The mission of the hub will be to encourage software developers and technology entrepreneurs and also train digital skills in the country. By the plan, the Facebook incubator programme would help develop tech startups in the country and also help train 50,000 Nigerians in digital skills. At the moment, there isn't detail about the period the programme will take place; the period will be announced in a later day. But unlike the Google digital skills training, which is online, the Facebook digital skills training would be offline. According to Facebook, the training will be offered in cities including Port Harcourt in the South, Calabar in the South East, Kaduna in the North, and Abuja at the center. Even though a phishing attack is more damaging than a virus attack, it is the virus attack that always steals the headline. In a virus attack, victims’ files get corrupted, deleted or locked – but with a strong, up-to-date antivirus, the files could be recovered. In the case of a phishing attack, it is a case of stolen identity. The hacker steals victims’ confidential information, which could include bank account details (which he can use to cart away victims’ life savings). Therefore, it is paramount you know how to prevent phishing and protect yourself against phishing threats. The aim of this post is to put you through the phishing preventive and protection measures. But before that let me briefly explain what phishing is, and the forms in which it usually comes. What Is a Phishing Attack? A phishing attack is a hack in which its sole aim is stealing victims’ data and confidential information such as passwords, PINs, Social Security Number (in the US), credit/debit card number, and other highly guarded personal information. Most of the time, the phishing hacker sends phishing email, Instant Message (on social media), or SMS to the unsuspecting victims. In Nigeria, for example, we could say those folks sending SMS claiming people’s BVN has been blocked and asking them to contact them are into phishing. The aim of sending such SMS is to trick people into giving their bank and ATM debit card details so that the folks can access the victims’ funds and transfer to theirs – or to secret bank accounts they have access to. As for email and Instant Message, victims are usually asked to click on links which take the victims to a fake website seeming to be real. The website would then ask the victims to update their personal information and from there the hacker steals the information. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/phising-attack.jpg Now that you have the idea of what phishing attack is about, let’s go to how to prevent phishing and protect yourself against phishing threat. How to Prevent Phishing and Protect Yourself against Phishing Threats * Don’t give your personal information to unsecured websites (websites without HTTPS): Blogs, regular websites, and e-commerce websites are in constant demand for users’ personal information, especially email — it isn’t a bad thing to give it to them. However, before you do, make sure the website is secured. You will know that a website is secured through HTTPS in front of its URL – that is, there will be an S, after the HTTP. The S after HTTP shows that data transfer from your computer or phone to the server of the website is protected and encrypted. On e-commerce websites, site seals like Comodo Site Seal and Truste Site Seal, in the footer, also show that such websites are secured. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Trust-Seal.png The main point here is, if you want to protect yourself against phishing threats, you should never give your personal information to a website that carries HTTP. Even Google isn’t happy with HTTP websites because they aren’t safe, and it has started penalizing them in its search engine results and flagging them as unsecured on its Chrome browser. Also, when shopping on an e-commerce website, go for pay-on-delivery, if the option is available; doing that would prevent you from supplying your card details, which could be hijacked during payment processing online. * Be wary of links in email and on social media, including WhatsApp: The most frequently used method in phishing attacks is to send a link to victims; the hacker would send a phishing link into the victims’ email, social media inbox, or broadcast the link through WhatsApp. To prevent phishing and protect yourself against phishing threats from links, don’t click anyhow links in your email or on social media, especially from unknown persons. As for WhatsApp, when someone sends you a chat asking you to click a link so that you can win money or a prize, ignore the chat. Such links are either a phishing trap or a scam or a fruitless referral program. * Be wary of shortened links: This way of preventing phishing and protecting yourself against phishing threats is related to being wary of links in an email message, social media and Whatsapp. People usually use , and other URL shorteners to shorten long links; however, a hacker could also use the URL shorteners to conceal links to phishing websites. So to protect yourself against phishing threat from a shortened link in email and others, copy any suspected shortened link, go to http://www.checkshorturl.com, and paste the shortened link into the box provided on the page. Then click on Expand, and the shortened link would be expanded to its original full link. If the original full URL doesn’t speak to the content in the body of the email or social media post, it is likely to be a phishing link. Run for your life! * Don’t reply email and SMS asking you for your personal information: Some hackers would pose as a real company and email, call, or SMS you that your account with them is having an issue and that you should send your username (or email) and password so that they can fix it. Don’t fall for this! Real companies can access the username, password, and biodata of their customers from their backend and wouldn’t email or SMS customers to supply them. To not fall for this phishing, always check the email address or phone number of the person contacting you. Most of these hackers use email like name-of-company@gmail.com or name-of-company@yahoo.com e.g. paypal@gmail.com or paypal@yahoo.com. The real company would have its domain name as its email so that its email can be something like support@paypal.com or customercare@paypal.com. As for SMS, most companies use a personalized name for SMS; so if you receive an SMS from a regular phone number and the content of the SMS claims the SMS is from a company, ignore the SMS. If you are worried that the claim that your account is having issues might be true, Google the company’s website, go to the “contact us” page on the company’s website and contact the company about the claim. * Be wary of popups: popups are normally used for collecting subscribers’ emails and names. But when a popup is asking more than name and email, ignore it. And to really prevent phishing and protect yourself against phishing threats from popups, don’t click on links on popup screens. * Install and regularly update your security software: antivirus and antimalware not only protect against viruses and malware, they can also prevent phishing and protect against phishing threats. So you should have a good antivirus installed on your device and complement it with a good antimalware – and always update them. Conclusion Just as virus attacks wouldn’t stop, the phishing attacks wouldn’t stop, too. But by following the above tips on how to prevent phishing and protect yourself against phishing threats, you have a high chance of not being among the victims, when next phishing hackers strike. Twitter has eventually rolled out 280 characters and everybody isn’t happy. Some people are mad at this decision to the extent that they call it Facebooklisation of Twitter. If you are one of these people that feel tweets should remain 140 characters and hate the 280, this post is for you. Here are three extensions (add-ons) you can use to block 280 Twitter characters, and never see them again. Extensions that Block 280 Twitter Characters 1. 140 Characters Only: This is a Chrome extension that blocks 280 Twitter characters, and it is one of the fantastic ones that do the blocking efficiently. After you might have downloaded and installed the extension, all tweets that are more than 140 characters – be it real tweets or embedded tweets – would be cut off from your stream. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/block-280-twitter-character.jpg 2. Block280: Aside from using 140 Characters Only extension in Chrome, you can as well use Block280. The extension is slightly advanced than the former. It collapses any tweet in your stream that is more than 140 characters, showing only the handle of the poster and the people mentioned in the tweet. Even the embedded link and images attached to the tweet aren’t spared – Block280 will truncate all. This extension takes it to the extreme, so it is perfect for you if you are extremely annoyed about the 280 Twitter characters. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/block-280-twitter-character-2.jpg Both 140 Characters Only and Block280 can be downloaded on Chrome web store. 3. Tweets Truncator: This extension is for Firefox and works like Chrome’s 140 Characters Only extension. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/block-280-twitter-character-3.png Tweets Truncator can be downloaded from Firefox Add-ons page. Those are the three solid extensions you can use to block the long 280 Twitter characters, and take yourself back to the Twitter of 140 characters. For now, Opera browsers and Twitter for Android and iOS don’t have any 280-character blockers. Source: https://www.techrabytes.com/extension-block-280-twitter-characters/ |
We used to believe that the United States has the most advanced and fastest of technology, but when it comes to the 4G LTE network, the country is seriously lagging behind in terms of speed. In a recent study by OpenSignal, which surveyed over 77 countries and measured the speed of their 4G LTE, the United State's 4G LTE network only managed to find itself in the 61st position. The survey was carried out between July 1 and October 1, and from the result, the United State's 4G LTE speed averaged 13.98 Mbps. That of Singapore, which is the fastest among the tested countries, averaged 46.64 Mbps. Other countries with very fast 4G LTE network include South Korea at 45.85 Mbps; Norway at 42.03 Mbps; Canada at 29.79 Mbps; and Mexico at 22.03 Mbps. Nigeria wasn't included in the study, but according to the result from the 4G LTE speed test on Nigerian ISPs by Folarin of PulseNG, MTN 4G's LTE is the fastest in the country, with a speed of 25 Mbps. And that’s 11.02 Mbps faster than the average in the United States. However, the other ISPs in Nigeria aren’t impressive in the speed of their 4G LTE network. Folarin claimed Etisalat’s 4G LTE could only muster 4.4 Mbps, and Glo's 4G LTE is erratic, not giving room to speed test. And as we all know, Airtel is still planning on rolling out its 4G LTE network. Source: https://www.techrabytes.com/mtns-4g-lte-speed-is-faster/ |
Uber has been facing serious competitions and scandals in recent time, and now, the latest to join the scandals is the fact that some of its drivers are now scamming riders. If you are a regular user of the taxi-hailing app, you would have noticed that sometimes the cost of your ride is ridiculously high, but you still go ahead and pay. The secret of those ridiculous charges has been exposed: some Uber drivers are manipulating the Uber app and inflating distance, thereby increasing the fare. They do that using a fake GPS itinerary app called Lockito. Lockito was designed for developers for testing geofencing-based app and simulating location. But like every great tool in hand of the bad guys, the app is now being used by some Uber drivers to deceive the Uber driver app. Using Lockito, these drivers basically create fake GPS waypoints, which the driver can make as long as he wishes, and then route the Uber driver app through it. So instead of the Uber app to calculate the real distance (and time) covered in a trip, it calculates the simulated distance of the fake waypoints. And that's what the rider pays for. The Lockito app has only been reported to be able to trick the Uber app on Android phones, and sadly, the app doesn't even require a root access to manipulate GPS location. This issue has been reported to Uber, and it is expected that an update would fix this loophole soon. But why you wait for the loophole to be fixed, look out for the red flag in Uber ride that costs more than usual; the driver may be using Lockito (or other fake GPS itinerary app) to cheat you. Pirate Bay receives millions of pageviews per day, but unfortunately, it can’t generate money from the pageviews. This is because Adsense and other ad networks will never approve such a website that allows publishing thousands of pirated digital copyright products every day. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/pirate-bay.jpg The website has only a few options to make money, and a new report stated that the torrent site has just developed a new way to generate money, through hijacking the CPU of users. But it isn’t for what you might be thinking! The hijacking isn’t to hack into the system of users and steal credit card information – it is to mine a digital currency. This new development was discovered by TPB’s visitors, who noticed a JavaScript that initiates the currency mining command on the torrent site. What the script does is to use computer resources of the user to mine a digital currency called Monero coins. When the script starts the mining, the CPU usage of the users of the torrent site will significantly increase; however, the users may not notice this, if their CPU is powerful. For users with not so powerful CPU, data processing on their computer may experience a little slowdown. See Also: Panasonic’s moving fridge can walk up to you and serve you a drink The Interesting thing is that Pirate Bay didn’t deny this act; the torrent site confirmed the digital currency JavaScript to TorrentFreak, saying the script is still in the test mode. The big plan for the torrent site is to fully implement the script and use it to generate constant revenue for the site. At the moment, the JavaScript has only been installed on the search result page and category listing page. Some users of the site claimed they were able to stop the script from hijacking their CPU, by using ad blockers and adjusting their browser’s setting. Perhaps that will be the only way to stop Pirate Bay from hijacking the CPU of you and me too. Source: https://www.techrabytes.com/pirate-bay-hijacks-cpu/ |

It’s true that the current electric cars driven around the world aren’t made for Africa. In some African countries, charging a phone isn’t easy not to talk of charing a car. Couple that with the bad roads in the continent, and you would be right to say an electric car can’t survive African ruggedness. However, the Technical University of Munich has just announced a prototype electric car, called aCar, which was specifically designed to cope with the ruggedness of the African road. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/acar-tum-20170917-183031.jpeg The university stated that it understands that most roads in Africa, especially in the rural Africa, have portholes and dirt, and so it designed the aCar, which can cope with flaws on the road and even withstand off-road driving. The aCar is a four-wheel drive electric car and uses an electric motor to propel its movement. See Also: Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is coming on October 17 Aside from being an electric car, the design of the aCar is also modular. This means the car can be used for carrying passengers or be converted into a cargo carrier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8xGJju2x20 The car hasn’t been fully deployed into the African market, but it has been tested in Ghana, back in July, and the result of the test claimed the maximum range the car can go is 50 miles. When the aCar is finally released into the market, it will cost €10,000. That’s is about NGN4.24million in Nigeria, about GHS52,950 in Ghana, and about KHS1.23million in Kenya. Yes, Airtel has given us unlimited data plans in Nigeria, and we are 'supposed to be happy'. However, what the India-owned telecom company is giving in its native country is out-of-this-world. The firm has just introduced a package called Airtel Rs.349 pack, which gives unlimited calls and 28GB data bundle for Rs.349. Even though the Naira is currently weak and helpless, when you convert that amount to Naira, it approximates to ₦1950 only. Yes, ₦1950 only! Airtel, fully called Bharti Airtel in India, didn't just take a dive down to introduce such an unbelievable offer; it was due to a strong competition from a new comer, Reliance Jio. Less than a year that the company started off in India, it has accumulated over 125 million subscribers -- thanks to its very, very cheap data bundle and call offers. Since its inception, Jio offers, among other plans, a Rs.349 plan, which gives unlimited calls to all networks (in India), 20GB of data, and unlimited free SMSes. And the plan is valid for 56 days. As a result of the mouth-watering offers from the new comer, a lot of Indians started switching to Jio. But to mitigate against losing their subscribers, Airtel and other telecoms (like Vodafone) in India introduced offers that will compete with those of Jio's. And so Vodafone first introduced a Rs.392 pack and now Airtel has introduced a Rs.349 pack, a package that costs the same as that of Jio's. The Vodafone's Rs.392 pack (an equivalent of ₦2200) gives unlimited calls and 28GB data bundle; the Airtel Rs.349 pack gives unlimited calls to all networks and 28GB data bundle. The Airtel Rs.349 pack didn't come without terms and conditions, though. The plan allows subscribers to use a maximum of 1GB data in a day, and of 250 minutes call in a day, and it's only valid for 28 days. When the limit is exceeded, subscribers will need to pay 10 paise per minute for calls to Airtel numbers, and 30 paise per minute for calls to other networks. https://www.techrabytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Airtel_Rs_349_Plan.png Full Airtel Packs in India What can be deduced from this reduction in the cost of Airtel packs is that competition is good, for the subscribers. It makes things cheaper. But the question now is, why is NCC trying to increase the cost of data plans and tariff plans in Nigeria? And why do telecom operators always wait for a fierce competitor to reduce price drastically before others join in the reduction? Any day, anytime, it is the best to buy a brand new phone. But what if you can’t afford that mid-range or high-end phone you crave for? Your only option is to hope that one day you see someone (or a vendor) that wants to sell it as fairly used. However, buying fairly used phones in Nigeria can be risky. You don’t know the history of the phone — and the seller may want to use that against you. In order to get the best deal from fairly used phones, always consider the following five (5) things. https://mobilityarena.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/buying-fairly-used-phones.jpg 5 Things to Consider When Buying Fairly Used Phones in Nigeria 1. The physical appearance of the phone: Your first consideration when buying a fairly used phone in Nigeria should be the appearance of the phone. You need to check the body of the phone for not only scratches but also rust, which is a sign of liquid damage. When the seller delivers the phone to you, you should thoroughly check the body of the phone and power it on, to check for screen damage. You should operate the phone (make calls and open apps) and take note of how the screen responds to tap and swipe. A fairly used phone in a good condition shouldn’t lag while operating it and the call quality should be good without background noise. If you are satisfied with the screen and external body of the body, the next thing you should check is the ports (charging port and headphone jack port). Check the two ports for any sign of rust and use earpiece and charger to test the working condition of the two ports. Lastly, remove the battery of the phone (if it is removable) and check the terminals for rust. You should also check the battery and make sure it isn’t swelling already. 2. The specifications of the phone: This isn’t applicable only when buying fairly used phones in Nigeria – it is equally applicable when buying new phones. Before you put your money on a fairly used phone, check out the specifications of the phone online. By doing this, you get to know if the phone is suitable for the main purpose you are buying it for. As a mobile-game lover, the megapixels of the camera mightn’t matter to you; instead, you would be interested in the RAM size, the GPU, and the speed and number of cores of the processor. 3. Ownership of the phone: As we all know, people’s phones are stolen every day – and all these stolen phones end up in the black markets of the fairly used phones in Nigeria. So if you are buying a fairly used phone, especially from individuals, you must ask questions about the ownership of the phone and the reason the phone is put up for sale. Asking to see the original receipt of the phone is a way to authenticate ownership, and as a rule, if a fairly used phone comes with a security lock (like phone lock, SIM lock or any other locks) don’t buy it and go format or restore to factory settings. Those kinds of fairly used phones are likely to have been stolen. If the seller is really the owner of the phone, he shouldn’t have forgotten his security codes at the point of sale. Be careful when buying fairly used phones in Nigeria, for most of them are stolen. 4. Scams: When it comes to buying fairly used phones in Nigeria, over the Internet, scams should be a major concern to you. There are some websites in the country that allow users to publish their fairly used phones so that other users come contact them to buy the phones. This kind of initiative is a good one, but the problem is that scammers are abusing these platforms. We have heard different stories of people losing their money to these scammers claiming to be selling fairly used phones. If you are buying a fairly used phone online, make sure you only pay on delivery. Don’t send any initial payment to the seller, and when you are to meet the seller one-on-one, make sure you are meeting in a public area. 5. Price: This consideration is related to scams. It is true that fairly used phones are expected to be cheaper than to the new one, but when the price is unrealistic cheap, you should be worried. How can someone say she is selling her fairly used iPhone 7 for NGN70,000 and you want to buy it. It is either the phone is stolen or it is a scam.
