Uyi said he waited until the living room became deserted. He had escorted all his friends out. One of them , he said , was too drunk to ride home and had requested to stay until the break of dawn.

" I refused " Uyi stated " he would have foiled my plan. I couldn't take any chances. I came back into the common room and saw Nosa sleeping on the cushion next to you. I woke him up and ushered him to his room . Then I carried you into your roo-"

I signalled him to stop. " Wait. . You mean , You woke Nosa up and asked him to go to bed . And how come he fell asleep so easily "

" the first bottle of wine from which he gave you . The one he had in his arms that night when I left you both " Uyi said .


"Yes what about it ?

Uyi shook his head sideways in regrets . silence became his backbone.


Daemon slapped him hard " Oga talk something jare !

Uyi coughed out so loud that I thought he would spill his throat out.

I told Daemon to stop hitting him . I stood up and walked to Uyi. I squated and gazed into his eyes.

" You put something in it. "

Uyi nodded.

He said he had put a sleep inducing hard- drug in it , He mentioned the name of the drug and it started with the letter ' A ' . The effect was too much for ladies . He said it took about an hour to kick in, so he had to time it perfectly as he slipped it in when Nosa dropped the bottle on a table.



" Having succeeded ,I jacked you up , I put my arm round your torso. When I got to your room , I placed you safely on the bed " He paused then continued with a saddening tone " Efua I'm really sorry . I tried to hold back . Even there in the room, I hesitated but you were too beautiful to overlook . You slept like a princess . Its because I loved you that's why I -"


I stood up , and looked away. I paced the room. I noticed Daemon waiting for my orders. His boys were agile and ready. I returned to Uyi .


My face had new companions in form of fresh tears which broke free from my eyelids. I bit my lips in regret . I raised the knife that had been in my arms ever since.

Uyi ' s eyes glowed when he said" what---What are you doing? "

I was silent . I hated him so much and wanted nothing to do with him anymore . Ending his life would just be perfect, but again it would not erase the pain he had inflicted on me. Letting him live in misery without a limb would be just perfect or better : I would rip off his manhood.

I surged toward him and said " Do you know how much pain you have caused me? You have no idea what I have done just to get this confession. And your only explanation is that you loved me ? Oh my. I mean , how could you do this? What if- What if I had gotten-- "

I stroked the knife on his left arm and cut the rope that held him. The entire binding came slippping to the floor like a bevy of flowers.

In shock, Uyi reopened his eyes to see his arms free.

I wiped the pool of tears off my eyes. I dropped the knife and it clanked unto the cold tiles on the floor. I grabbed my bag and made for the front entrance .

Daemon called me back. " Madam what will happen if he reports to the police about his assault and torture ?

I replied that he won't dare .

"Leave him." I continued " His conscience will judge him for the rest of his life " I turned to Uyi " I regret ever trusting you. I never want to see you again . If I do- trust me , I will not think twice to put a bullet through your chest "


One of Daemon's boys said to Uyi as he picked up the knife on the floor. " Stop rape ... Real men don't rape . Talk to girls and tell them whats on your mind . They are not monsters . If you still can't, Oga pay olosho for sex"


Daemon punched him for the last time before we left. " You get that abi? make you dae apply wisdom and wida your eyes . shebi you grab?


Uyi nodded in pains . He understood perfectly.

Outside the estate , I paid Daemon and his boys the money we had agreed on . They left with promises of watching over my back. I told them there was still God. I suddenly realised I had forgotten about Him and guilt became my shadow.

I entered a cab to Umuahia suburb and stopped at the motor park. It was 3 pm already and I wanted to be in Benin before nightfall.

I called Nosa and told him I was leaving Umuahia for good .

" Buy two tickets? I asked after he requested I do so.

" Okay . But why ?

He did not give me a straightforward answer.



" Okay . I'm waiting for it " I said and hung up the line .

I paid for two seats . I sat down on a plastic bench at a corner in the reception and cried out my heart. My world had fallen into tiny pieces and I had no idea from where to start picking.

Alone and dejected , I cried bitterly with intervals until an arm touched me from behind.

I swirled to see who it was. A spark of joy covered my face as I jumped up and threw my arms round his neck.


" I could not do it "I began " Nosa , I tried but-"

Nosa told me to stop crying. He said it was over now. That I had done the right thing and that he was proud of me.


He sat me down on the plastic bench . He brought out two files from his travelling bag.

" Why two ? I asked

" It's for us - my service rights and yours " he said smiling.


I blushed and wiped off my tears. He was my hero .
He knew about Uyi's interrogation but I had told him to back out of it. I did not want so much drama .

I checked the file he gave me . It contained all my documents and certificates.

" But I lied to my parents about everything " I said.


" Don't worry "


Nosa told me that he would help me explain to them. He assured that things would work out fine. He said the truth would only set me free.

I smiled.

" I promise I will stay with you forever . " Nosa continued as he smiled " From now on, your problems are mine , Your pain is also mine, your church will be my church, your joy is my joy and your family will also be my family . My home , Efua, will be your home"

He came closer and I shut my eyelids. I opened them again , carefully when he planted a soft kiss on my lips .


It was my first time kissing, and I blushed all over . The feeling was overwhelming and breath ceasing that it came from the man I truly loved.


" I love you Efua "


" I love you too "

" Come on now " He said as he stood up " Forever is a long time , let's begin our first journey together "


We grabbed our bags and boarded the luxurious " Chisco bus". We cuddled into a corner and I rested my head on his right shoulder .



I was free , free from every chains that held me in doubt and discomfort , free from deceit and lies . Free from myself and ready to explore .
A smile sliced cross my face as I shut my eyelids briskly . Peace entered my heart while my mind flew to a place where it was just the two of us , Nosa and I , alone on a beach, under the warm bright sunlight.

The Saturday morning did not begin so well for Kechi and I . I poured out her clothes unto floor and returned the buckets into the bathroom.
" Go and buy your own . . Nothing in this house belongs to you. Just stay clear off anything that is mine."


" Izzy why are you doing this ? I don't understand --"

" You will soon understand when I return your rent and throw you out of here "

I pushed her out the bathroom and locked the door with a padlock . I went to my bed and lay on it, I secured the keys to the kitchen and bathroom inside my blouse .

Kechi stared at me .

"What? why are you looking at me like that? Abeg don't give me those Ibo winch eyes . Biko "

She had already had enough and she couldn't keep quiet anymore when she shot back at me.

" Okay. fine " She said " Accuse me of being a boyfriend snatcher . Accuse me of being a deceiver, a liar and a cheap attention seeker "

I looked at her then said

" You called yourself those names. I didn't.

Kechi told me that it was not her fault that Dani decided to keep things from me. She said that it was not her fault that I couldn't close my legs for Ade. She even said it's not her fault that my guilt made me think that Amaka was Daniels new girlfriend.

"What do you mean? I asked her as I raised an eyebrow " It's my fault abi ? fool " I said all those is Bini and she didnt understand a single thing.

" You know what? " Kechi barked " I'm tired of all this . Im tired of being your shoulder to cry on when you need comfort, I'm tired of being the one you pick your anger on" She threw a pillow at me" I am tired of letting. you . have. things. while i sit. back . and. be. a . good friend "

I tried to imagine what she meant . I stood up and clapped my hands together " Ehen , oya confess o! confess your sins. Jealousy donn tie wrapper . "


Kechi shook her head . She paced the room .

She Looked at me then said " If you had not been so selfish, you wouldnt had gone for Dani in the first place. I met him before you , I introduced him to you but you went ahead and seduced him, knowing very well that I wanted him."

" You are mad" I yelled out " You hear me, I said you are mad."



I forged ahead toward her.
