EducationRe: “Nigerian Professors Are The World’s Lowest Paid” – ASUU President Laments by TWoods(m): 4:44am On Nov 04, 2024
I looked up his research works and found only 33 publications, many of which are not as first or last author. 33 publications is a paltry return for a professor demanding a wage similar to his more productive Western colleagues. I could find none that were of sufficient quality that would appear in any prominent international journals for soil science. None appeared to have done anything to influence how nigerian farmers treat soils to improve crop yield in Nigeria.

He survived over 12 hours suggests this was a survivable accident (probably would have lost that foot). This is why people talk about japa. Being in a sane country isn't always about how much money you can make... It's about knowing that these types of survivable accidents won't end your life.

No, he is not. We need to get out of this mindset for things to change in Nigeria. He is spending taxpayer (not personal) funds to do work that he was ELECTED to do.

If I were asked what the stark difference between Nigeria and the Western world is, this piece would be a great example.

press9jatv:

GOV. FUBARA DECRIES PACE OF WORK AT OKRIKA GRAMMAR SCHOOL, SAYS THERE MUST BE VALUE FOR MONEY

...To read the riot act to contractors
Why would this be necessary? Wasn't there a scope of work agreed to and signed by both parties? In saner climes, if the contracted job did not meet specifications, you went to court.

press9jatv:
...Says 100% contract sum has been paid
Why? Are there no standard terms and conditions that govern payment for work delivered by milestones? How do you pay 100% for a job that hasn't been done?

press9jatv:
The governor noted his administration was touched by the very deplorable state of the foremost school and decided to give it a facelift and since the award of contract for the remodelling he has not visited the project but relied on the reports of the Commissioner for Education.
So the only time the government carries out its mandated duties to the people who elected it is when they have been personally "touched"? What does the education department do with its budget?

press9jatv:
"My assessment, to be very frank, I am not satisfied. The Commissioner gave me the impression that 70% job has been done. From what I am seeing here I need to take over the supervision of this project to make sure I give my people a standard grammar school again."
In more serious countries, this commissioner would have tended his resignation on the spot, or the governor would have demanded it. The commissioner not only lied, he could not be trusted to carry out a simple task and required the governor to supervise him/her?

press9jatv:
Gov. Fubara emphasised that he will be meeting with the various contractors within the week to read out the riot act on handling the jobs to them, stressing that his administration will not compromise quality and value for money.
This is silly and inefficient. What is the point of hiring commissioners when the governor personally has to meet with contractors to do work they legally agreed to?

press9jatv:
"I understand the issue of price differences, we can discuss those variations but the quality must match the amount that we spend. You know I am somebody who has to do with figures, so there must be value for money. At the end, our people need to be happy that we have done this and I also need to be happy that I did what is needed for our people."
Governance is not about the person, but about service. How roads, schools, and other infrastructure get built and maintained should not be based on how the governor wants to be perceived. It should simply be standard.

What if the next governor isn't "somebody who has to do with figures"? There would not be an expectation of value for money?

Again everyone seeing this thread. Please be inspired!. In case you have very good grades, you do not need an MS degree to apply for PhD in the USA. You can get admitted for PhD straight from your BSc, provided that you can prove to the admission committee why they should trust you with their Assistantship. Do not let this "Abule Egba US consular" misinform you.
Go to the universities website to find all the information that you need.

mach7:
Good information can be sometimes used for mischievous purposes.

BudgIT has provided the facts, but did not provide a good background for the facts presented.

It is a known practice for constituency projects to be embedded into the budgets of MDAs. The respective MDA is expected to contract out and oversee the implementation of the constituency project within the timeframe and voted amount as provided for in the budget.

This method was adopted to ensure that constituency allowance for projects are not paid directly to lawmakers due to issues of mismanagement and/or corruption. The lawmaker is only responsible for identifying the project needed after due consultation with his or her constituents. Lawmaker is also expected to confirm that the constituency project was carried out.

If you check the budget of different MDAs you will see voted amounts for constituency projects embedded on them. This has been the practice since the OBJ era.

Let's be guided please.
CRIN is based in Oyo State, the "constituency projects" are in several states including Lagos, Rivers, Ondo. Are you saying legislators from those states are hiding costs for "constituency projects" in unrelated entities outside their jurisdiction? Why is providing solar lights in Festac not the job of the LASG?

@MrGboyegaD

I have googled as you have recommended, and this is what i have discovered ;

1. United States (as a specimen) has officially 5,300 Universities (The main academia).

2. Now, let's break down order of ranks of regular University faculty : We have (Full) Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor. Some Universities have ' Distinguished Professor or University Professor. Let's not forget Professor Emeritus ( retired professors).
The aforementioned are PhD degree holders working in the main academia.

3. Let's go to USA Industries: As at last- year 2023, the United States has approximately, 623,000 Manufacturing Industries, with " Research Scientists (PhDs holders) who focus on developing new products and technologies, and who applies science to solve problems in the marketplace. Research Scientists also works in the academia, because they reports all new breakthroughs back to the Universities and other higher institutions of learning.

4. Therefore, back to your claim sir , how will more than 60% of PhD holders in the United States work outside academia ?
I accept that very few PhD holders walk-away with their certificates, but how will those few beat the main PhD holders working in sense 2 & 3 above?

5. I am open to genuine correction and honest opinions.

Best Wishes 🙏
PhD here who isn’t a research scientist. I have worked with lots of other Phds who aren’t. You’re missing a large number of us.

Out of 100 PhD holders worldwide , how many % are not working in the academia ?

** Your 14 years PhD degree is ceremonial. PhD in what ? From which institution , and what is your contribution towards your area of study and yourself ? 14 years PhD degree holder who has not for once written an essay on developments on Nairaland.
I am just going to leave this here. You've been in the States for 2 years and no one has any peace here ever since. What do you want those born here to do?

1. Yes. I thought like your friend when i read your piece, but since you did not indicate interest for PhD, i decided to respect your plans.

2. Unfortunately, you cannot or will not be successful with PhD admissions or studentship' if you don't have interest in lecturing.

PS: You seems to be a businesss/management orientated person. Stick with your MSc. Another MSc won't ring a bad bell if you plan it very well.

14 years with a PhD, never worked a day in academia and it was the best decision I ever made. Do you live in the United States? There are tons of Phds working in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

That was my concerns too…but seeing what guys are saying here I’m starting to feel somehow,, should I have gone with no money to offset my bills and start sleeping in peoples houses, or beg people to pay my tuition?. My tuition runs close to $32k. I have no money to offset this. And thinking I’ll find help when I land when I’ve already exhausted all opportunities to get another means of funding from other professor failed. My thought was “what’s the purpose of traveling when the funding to do research Kant there. Isn’t it just decent to stay back and reapply and look for other means of funding?’

Now, (attached) the other school which admitted me for Fall 2024 alreeey agreed to defer me to Spring 2025 with funding from TA this time, and not from a PI’s research (I told them I had visa delay issues). But from what guys here are saying, it seems I won’t be able ro get another visa since I’ve refused to use the one given to me the other time. Tbh, I just didn’t want to risk it without funding. Research for my PhD matter more to me than just Japa…I guess I’ve lost my chances at visa and I’ll probably try some other countries

Note: I had my Masters in the US last year. Came back home. So I was only going back because I was able to secure another PhD offer upon reaching home
You made the right choice. That said, what is your PhD in? I find it difficult to believe you cant find a PhD fellowship if you're in the STEM field. You maybe need to search harder.
