The Welsh midfielder has just completed his first year at Emirates Stadium but his hopes of silverware in his debut season were dashed by a slow start in the Premier League and late stumbles in the knockout competitions.

Arsène Wenger’s side proved they can compete with the cream of the top flight when they beat Manchester United and Chelsea last season. However their title prospects were scuppered by defeats against some teams in the lower echelons of the Premier League.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Rio's Ready To Go Again by tysante(m): 11:38am On Jul 10, 2009
Rio Ferdinand believes a thorough pre-season workout over the next few weeks will be crucial to United's chances of success in 2009/10.

The Reds embark on a four-game tour of Asia late next week and Rio says the conditions and varied opposition in the Far East will provide ideal preparation for the long campaign ahead.

"The most important thing about pre-season is getting some good training done," the Reds defender told MUTV. "One of the main reasons we’ve been successful in the last few years is because we’ve had a good base from pre-season.

"It takes a bit of time to get acclimatised to the humid conditions in Asia, but it’s a good exercise to play against different teams that pose different threats. "

Daniel Sturridge, our teenage signing of the summer, has a clear reason for selecting a new club over Manchester City's potential for the next stage of his career.

The 19-year-old agreed a four-year deal with Chelsea last week having reached the end of his contract at City, and the decision was all about what his new employers could offer straight away.

'I am a young player but I am very ambitious and I want to push myself to the highest level and play with the best players in the world. I believe that I can achieve big things here at Chelsea.

'But I am going to be very patient,' he qualifies, 'because I know there are world class players here and I am not going to get upset if I am not playing because it is very long season. There are going to be a lot of games and hopefully as the season goes on there are going to be opportunities so I can show the fans what abilities I have.

'I am not saying that Man City haven't got ambitions for the Champions League, or for any competition, but Chelsea is a fresh start for me and I believe that coming here will make me a better player.

'Man City is the past and Chelsea is the future for me. ',

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Official: Ancelotti Says “terry Is My Captain” by tysante(m): 9:09am On Jul 08, 2009
Carlo Ancelotti, speaking for the first time to the world's media as Chelsea manager, has given a clear message on the future of John Terry. With Manchester City having made an offer for the transfer of the Chelsea captain, completely rejected by the club, the future of our longest-serving player was a certainty for discussion, and Ancelotti has already made a major decision.

'John Terry is a symbol of this team and he will captain next time, and in the future,' said the Italian. 'He said he wants to stay forever at Chelsea and we want to keep him forever. Now there is a question from Manchester City, the price - but for Terry, no price. 'Terry will be captain of Chelsea forever,' Ancelotti said for emphasis. 'He said that he wants to stay, there is no problem for him, and for us the story continues.

'I spoke with Terry one month ago when I came to the club and he welcomed me, and after he went on holiday and returns on July 9. 'I will speak with him because he is the captain and I want to have a good relationship with the captain and all the players, but the captain is an important person in the dressing room.' In past interviews Terry has spoken of his desire to be seen as Chelsea's version of Paolo Maldini - the ultimate 'one club man'. The recently-retired AC Milan legend is of course someone well known to Ancelotti.

'He [Terry] is very close to Maldini, for professionalism, quality, and I think he will be the best captain for Chelsea. 'I think that there is not a player that makes a team. A lot of great players can make a great team, if they work together to reach the same objective in the season.'

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Manchester United Loans Possebon To Sportin Braga by tysante(m): 8:07am On Jul 08, 2009
Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Possebon will spend the entire 2009/10 season on loan at Portuguese side Sporting Braga.

The 20-year-old joined United from Brazil’s Internacional in January 2008, and went on to make his senior Reds debut in the 2008/09 Premier League curtain-raiser against Newcastle United.

He made a total of three starts and five substitute appearances during the course of the season but, due to the first team’s wealth of central midfielders, Rodrigo found further first team opportunities hard to come by.

He spent the majority of the season in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Reserves as the Reds won two cups and finished second in the Barclays Premier Reserve League (North).

Braga finished fifth in the Liga Sagres last season and will be taking part in the 2009/10 Europa League, formerly the UEFA Cup.

Within months he was well known among Chelsea supporters, scoring City's goal in the first leg of the FA Youth Cup Final, a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.Absent through injury from the second leg, Daniel saw his team-mates eventually defeat us 3-1 on the night to take the trophy.A nephew of former Derby forward Dean Sturridge, Daniel arrived at City's Academy in 2003 from Coventry, having previously trained with Aston Villa. He graduated to the senior squad at the beginning of the 2006/07 season and after injuries hampered his speedy progress, a hat-trick in the reserves prompted a debut in February 2007 as a late substitute.

Daniel has also represented England up to Under 20 level, where he has played alongside our own Ryan Bertrand, Jack Cork and Scott Sinclair.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Vidic Rumors Dismissed! by tysante(m): 2:52am On Jul 04, 2009
Nemanja Vidic's agent has emphatically quashed any suggestions that the Serbian wants to leave United this summer.

The defender has recently been quoted as saying that his family are unhappy with life in Manchester, but Silvio Martina revealed that his client has had no media contact.

"Even though Vidic has not spoken for the last three months, there have been false interviews published in the press," Martina told Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I read that he wants to leave, that his wife is not happy at Manchester but all of these stories are false. He is very annoyed and saddened by these stories that give the wrong impression."

AC Milan, Internazionale, Barcelona and Real Madrid have all been credited with an interest in Vidic, but Martina insists his client is staying in Manchester.

"In football you never know what can happen, but I believe he will remain at Manchester United, one of the strongest clubs in the world," he said.

"If Vidic or I should have problems with the club, we will talk directly to Alex Ferguson and not to the newspapers."
