The Peoples Democratic Party has called on the national leadership of the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, to speak about other issues revealed by the Australian negotiator, Dr. Stephen Davis, on the activities of Boko Haram in the country. The ruling party, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in Abuja on Wednesday, was reacting to the statement made by the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie- Oyegun, in which he called on the Federal Government to punish those revealed by the negotiator as the sponsors of Boko Haram. Metuh alleged that it was also wrong for the APC to exonerate itself from “the blames of promoting insurgency in the country.” He said that Oyegun’s statement rather than exonerate the APC had further reinforced and underscored its true identity as a party of desperate politicians supportive of violence and disunity through their utterances and body language, a fact that he said was already well known to Nigerians. Metuh said, “If not to achieve the self-serving purpose of exonerating the APC, why would Oyegun’s statement choose to be silent on the revelation by Davis that some people opposed to President Goodluck Jonathan used their connections to Boko Haram to frustrate his efforts? “We also wonder why the APC has chosen to ignore some of the revealing aspects of Davis’ interview concerning Boko Haram’s funding and sponsorship. Is it because they are not favourable to them?” He alleged that Oyegun’s statement was a decoy to frustrate genuine efforts at finding solution to the security challenges facing the nation to the advantage of the APC. Metuh alleged that the same APC fought against moves by the British Parliament to investigate its involvement with terrorist elements as well as to divert attention from the opposition party meetings outside the country in its bid to promote insurgency in Nigeria. He restated his party’s earlier stand in which it referred to the APC as a party with a supporter of APC ideology, alleging further that it had been promoting insurgency and terrorism through the actions and utterances of its leaders. TheRE was confusion in the Akute area of Ogun State on Tuesday as residents accosted three Catholic Fathers-in-training, popularly called seminarians, tagging them terrorists. It was learnt that the three seminarians, who were students of Franciscal Friars of the Emaculate Seminary School, Sagamu, Ogun State, had come to the area on a visit to their friend when they were mistaken for terrorists. It was learnt that the students attracted the attention of the residents because they were dressed in white gowns. A resident, who pleaded anonymity for security reason, said, “The white gown attracted attention. One of them even had a beard. Some of us stopped them to know their mission. But before you know it, many people went to town that terrorists were in Akute.” Another resident, a commercial motorcycle rider, who also declined to give his name, said after interviewing the students, the residents were convinced that they were not terrorists He said, “Yes, we confronted three young men dressed as Catholic Church priests. We initially thought that they were Boko Haram members. However, after having a chat with them and searching them, we discovered that they were not terrorists. We subsequently allowed them to go. Nobody arrested them.” The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the students were taken to the police station where their identities were confirmed. Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said, “Those seen and challenged by members of the public in the Akute area were actually students of Franciscal Friars of the Emaculate Seminary School Sagamu Ogun State. “They were on a visit to a friend at Kayode Afolabi Close, Mubarak Estate Akute,Ogun State, before a distress call was put across to the Divisional Police Officer in Charge of Ajuwon Division. “The intending catholic priests were on their normal white robes with beards which made the residents to be suspicious that they were members of Boko Haram. They were taken to the Police Divisional Office for interrogation where their identities were confirmed. “The leaders and representatives of the seminary school in Sagamu, the Catholic Priest in Akute and some other students of the school have visited the police division in Ajuwon to identify them as their catholic members who are actually on training.” Adejobi appealed to the general public to always clarify issues before spreading wrong information, particularly sensitive issues on security. Indications emerged on Tuesday that the Founder and President of the Gospel Apostolic Church, Pa Samuel Sadela, has passed on. He was aged 114. Although a senior pastor in the church reportedly claimed that the man described as one of Nigeria’s oldest pastors could still be receiving treatment in a hospital, he was said to have died in the premises of the church in Lagos. As of the time of this report at 9.15pm press time on Tuesday, an official statement was still being awaited even as the church was said to have opened a condolence register for the man of God who remained sensational even as a very old man. Sadela was of the Apostolic stock of Christianity. His pastoral calling started in 1928 when he visited the famous Prophet Moses Orimolade of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church. When he marked his 113th last year birthday, the aged pastor had expressed hope to live up to 200 years of age. He had said “I feel happy to be this old. Actually, I feel like a young man. I still enjoy my meal of Iyan (pounded yam), Eba and bush meat. I sleep whenever I want to and wake up stronger I want to live longer to prove to all that God remains the same as He was in times past. If Methuselah could live for 969 years, God can make me live well beyond 113. If Noah could be 950, it is not too much for Him to make me live up to 200.” Even if that wish was not granted, Sadela left an indelible imprint in the hearts of his members and admirers around the world. The cleric, who claimed angels taught him to read the Holy Bible when he was only two years of age, raised not a few eye brows when he married a 30-year-old woman in 2007. “The Lord is my strength. I am very strong and energetic,” he was quoted as saying after the wedding in Lagos. According to reports, he first got married in 1934, with the marriage lasting for 21 years, but none of the couple’s seven children reportedly lived beyond their infancy. A second marriage, said to have been consummated in 1965, was blessed with four children, but only two survived. His second wife died in 2001. A native of Ondo State, Sadela attended St. Paul’s Anglican Primary School, Ifon, Osun State, but had to drop out when he travelled to Sapele, Delta State to work as houseboy to one Captain Pullen, a District Officer. Sadela however retraced his steps in 1918 and completed his Standard six education in 1920. Meanwhile, reactions from clerics have greeted his death. The Osun State Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, in a phone interview with our correspondent, expressed shock at Sadela’s passing. He prayed that God, ‘will comfort his family.’ Similarly, the founder of Christ Overcomer’s Assembly, Rev. Dipo Filani, described Sadela as a highly respected man of God. “He was one of the oldest pastors alive in Nigeria. There was a time he said miracles started taking place in his ministry when he was 90 years. Source www.punchng.com/news/nigerias-oldest-pastor-samuel-sadela-dies-at-114/ |

Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal There are strong indications that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, will soon defect to the All Progressives Congress. Our correspondent learnt in Abuja on Monday that the Speaker was set to dump the Peoples Democratic Party for the APC after a nationwide consultation. Tambuwal’s spokesperson, Imam Imam, said the nationwide consultation would determine whether the Speaker would contest the Presidency or the Sokoto State governorship election in 2015. Imam, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said that the Speaker was still consulting on the 2015 presidency and the defection to the APC. Imam said, “He (Tambuwal) is still consulting. The outcome of the consultation will be known at the appropriate time. He is consulting on whether he will defect to the APC. He is consulting on whether he will contest the presidency. He is also consulting on contesting governorship election.” The Speaker had on Tuesday, last week, held a closed- door meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State. After the meeting, Imam said Obasanjo and Tambuwal discussed the state of the nation. He had said, “You know Baba (Obasanjo) is father to all in the country. The visit was a consultation. It was about how to move the country forward and make the country better.” On Monday, www.thecable.ng reported that Tambuwal gave the biggest hint about his planned defection on Sunday in his hometown, Tambuwal, Sokoto State. After collecting his Permanent Voter Card, Tambuwal was asked if he would defect to the APC, he responded in Hausa, “Kowa ni tsuntsu kukan gidan su yake yi,” meaning “birds of a feather flock together.” Imam, in the interview with our correspondent on Monday, explained Tambuwal’s statements in Sokoto State on Sunday. He said, “The Speaker granted an interview in Tambuwal yesterday (Sunday) after collecting his permanent voter card. When journalists asked him questions about defection and whether he would contest the Presidency, he only said that he had to consult his people and the consultation is still going on. “The outcome of the consultation with the people will be made known at the appropriate time. Every politics is local. It is the needs and aspirations of your locality that will determine the direction of your own politics.” The Speaker has enjoyed a strong support of the APC members in the House. The support of the APC members was instrumental to his victory over Mrs. Mulikat Akande-Adeola, the candidate that the PDP backed for the position of a speaker. The APC leaders that have been mentioned as having interest in the party’s presidential ticket include a former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.); the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and a former Kwara State Governor, Senator Bukola Saraki. Source PUNCH |
