--- By Opeyemi Azeez The present administration in Kwara State set a new record in October 2016 when Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed commissioned the first state-owned N200 million Asphalt Plant built with the capacity to produce 25 tons of asphalt per day. Considerably, it’s a leap to bridge the road infrastructural gaps in the State. The development, objectively, has the potency to solve the major problems faced by the State Road Maintenance Agency (KWARMA) in the maintenance and further accomplishment of quality road networks across the State. Beyond the rhetoric, however, what is plausible is to ensure the government remains on track by blocking all chance for distractive circumstances. In other words, the commendations should be less important. Rather: the end goals. On the heels of the progress, the State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Alhaji Aro Yahaya, recounted the need to domesticate the production of quality asphalt, and by so doing: generate employment for both skilled and unskilled labour, reduce cost of road maintenance, and provide quick response to the impact of erosion and road degradation. According to him, these needs made it imperative for the State government to acquire the asphalt plant. From the above, the acquisition of the plant is worthy, realizing the direct impacts it bears on the duo of the government and the people, simultaneously. Since the commissioning of the plant, respite has overwhelmed motorists and other road users in the State courtesy of the quick (statewide) road rehabilitations embarked upon by KWARMA. Crowning to the employment opportunities and substantial reduction in the cost of road maintenance is the increasing source, provided by the plant, for more revenue generation through the sale of asphalt to contractors and other users. Revenue generated will assist the government to actualize more projects in other sectors. It is also cheering to note that despite the lean financial resources at the disposal of the State government, contractors handling various road projects across the State have been mobilized back to sites. Almost on daily basis, we hear of the Works Commissioner inspecting road projects across the State. While a few of these projects have been completed, many others are ongoing including the Maigida-Arobadi road in Moro local government, Ilala brigde, Oloro palace road and Share-Oke ode road (lot 1 and 2). Other ongoing road projects are Coca cola bridge road, Egbejila-airport road, Agbo-oba – Henry-George extension, and Amule Saraki bridge. Some of the roads that have been completed are the Babalonma township roads, mini-campus- Henry George road and Adua lere - Sanu Sheu- Isale koko road. With the establishment of the Kwara Infrastructure Development Fund (IF-K) by the State government, Kwara will no doubt witness unprecedented infrastructural growth as IF-K provides a sustainable funding window and ensures that all ongoing and new capital projects across the State are funded to completion, thereby ending the era of abandoned project in Kwara. The Geri-Alimi diamond underpass is among several other infrastructural projects planned for implementation under the IF-K scheme. Others are the establishment of two campuses of the Kwara State University in Osi and Ilesha-Baruba, dualisation of Michael Imodu-Ganmi road; dualisation of UITH-Sango road, renovation of the Indoor Sports Hall of the Kwara State Stadium and the Light Up Kwara projects. Certainly, there is no doubt about Governor Ahmed’s determination and commitment to ensure that Kwara State becomes self-reliant and achieve sustainable development by looking inwards to solve its challenges and initiate far-reaching measures to carry-out developmental projects in the face of lingering national economic downturn.

There is a worrying tendency to take media reports as gospel even when such publications are patently improbable to the discerning. That much is obvious in Mr Wale Fatade’s depth-free piece, titled ‘Governance as a farce in our states’, published by the Cable. Shockingly, Fatade takes an unverified claim by a pensioner as truth but classifies a logical explanation for a national malaise as inadequate. How did the pensioner come by the figure of 1005 dead retirees? Did the reporter verify the figures? Death by any cause is tragic and sad but who established a link between the pension arrears and the pensioners’ demise? In his haste to crucify governors through selective anecdotes about salary delays in states, Fatade fails the elementary test of news and public commentary: to check and cross check facts. Mr. Fatade, for your information, the Kwara State Government doesn’t owe civil servants and pensioners. They are fully paid to date by the administration of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed. On the contrary, the said pensioners referred to in the Punch story are local government retirees and are therefore the responsibility of the 16 local government councils. Notwithstanding, it is on record that the state government has a history of augmenting LG allocation which had dropped from N2.7b to N1b per month as of June. The latest intervention was in July when Governor Ahmed approved the release of N162m to the LGs. Therefore, I invite you to investigate articles properly before writing and stop misleading the public. Nigeria is stuck in a national economic gridlock. 27 states, says the president, can’t pay workers. Kwara is not among them. The solution lies in thinking our way out of the problem and not in vacuous opinion articles. Akorede is SSA Media to the governor of Kwara state |
This not a true story. Am from Kwara, the state govt is not owing pensioners. We should verify stories b4 dropping comments. |
Federal roads in Kwara suffered neglect by FG. For about a decade, there has been no ground breaking of new projects in Kwara. Also the 6 years of former president Goodluck Jonathan was a waste for Kwara with no impact. Moving forward, Kwara Govt took over some federal roads, which FG didn't reimburse Kwara Govt later. Currently, Kaiama federal road is been reconstructed by Gov Ahmed. |

Kwara State Governor, @AbdulfataAhmed said he is prepared to go into big time farming to contribute to the economic growth of the state and ensure food security. Governor Ahmed who said this during an interactive session with Civil Servants on levels 16 and 17 as well as Permanent Secretaries, emphasised the need for economic diversification of the state to mitigate the current national economic challenge and guarantee future economic stability. The Governor noted that the slide in earnings from federation account from about N3.8bn at the inception of his administration to a little over N1billion monthly, called for cutting of costs in other to sustain governance and development of infrastructure. Governor Ahmed who assured the civil servants that despite the prevailing economic challenges in the country, their welfare and regular payment of salaries and enrolments remain his top priorities, charged management staff of MDAs, as top echelons of the civil service, to put in place aggressive and progressive modalities of ensuring that the fortunes of the state improve through enhanced internally generated revenue. The governor said the projection of his administration is to hit N3bn mark by the end of 2016, away from the present N1.2bn monthly which was an impressive achievement from the monthly N500m IGR at the inception of his administration. “We will continue to ensure that our civil servants, are happy, efficient and productive; but to whom much is given much is expected”, he said. According to him, although, a critical factor is the personnel cost, his administration would not reduce the work force which would add to the army of unemployed but would ensure prudence in the management of available resources. The governor asserted that civil servants’ salaries in the State are paid to date, except those who have challenges with their Biometric Verification Numbers (BVN) stressing that once the issues are resolved they would be paid.
