NYSCHow I Worked With Over 20 Companies Before I Turned 21, You Can Too by ugofwesh(op): 4:17pm On May 26, 2018
This is not a piece where I just want to show off or brag of my little successful corporate career at an early age but It is just me sharing secret tips on how to get any organization to be begging you to work with them.
Sounds good right!
It’s a secret I have used over and over again both for unpaid and paid opportunities. You might want to explore it too.
I have worked with the following companies / organizations directly or indirectly: KPMG, Unilever, Andela, Enactus, Young Africa Leadership Initiative, Ringier Africa (The Owns of PulseTV), Hexavia, Tony Elumelu Foundation, UBA, Q21 Solutions, Lanre Olusola Academy, FUTO Business Club, Socialander, Sterling Bank Plc, The Autism Support Circle Initiative — TASCI, United Nation, Junior Achievement Nigeria, Global Shaper PH, Zolts limited, The Maintenance Institute Africa, Tech Hub Africa, Africa Sales Academy, Agrovation, Project Yahaya and many more!

Disclaimer: These secrets works for me. Doesn’t mean it will work 100% for you. Please note that time, situation, background and even location might differ but I am assuring you that with these secrets you should be close to your desired job opportunity.
Therefore, here are 10 secrets I am giving you, “the ASSURANCE, this will eventually get you your desired job/internship opportunity.
Are you ready? Let’s go.
1. Know Their sweetspot
2. Make their life easy
3. Show them, don’t tell
4. Count your lucky STARS
5. “WE” Instead of “I”
6. Body Language
7. Value before Value
8. I am not Hungry and Begging
9. I stand with YOU
10. Thank You and Follow up.

1. Know Their Sweetspot:
It’s my biggest secret before I even submit any application, I will under study them to find every single details about them. I will even go as far as asking people that work there about the organisation corporate culture, work environment and condition.
How well do you know them?
However, these are pointers to question you need to ask.
– What is their corporate culture? — This will help you know how you will fit in.
– What is the company history? — If you know where they are coming from you can know where they are going.
– What are the employees’ background? — This will not only help you bench mark yourself with them but help you understand the people you will work with better.
– What are their values, mission and vision — This is more like their sweet button if you can use it.
People these days apply for job opportunity without relevant experience to it. A good application takes a day or more to complete. Think about whether the job really is a good fit for you.

2. Make Their Life Easy:
From how you sent your application to how you structure your resume, the employer will know if you will be the employee that will give them extra work. Nobody wants a liability but asset. From how you structure your email and resume, a good resume should be relevant, very specific and simplified to them.
Many people do make this mistake, which is very wrong. They would dust the resume that they use 5 year ago to apply for an engineering job and use same to apply for human resource manager or even a bank opportunities.
Don’t get me wrong you might have the skills for them to employ you but you have to make your resume fit into the industry. For engineering opportunity, they are on the look out for technical skills unlike bank opportunities are looking for analytical skills. The different is clear.

3. Show them, don’t tell them:
I love this, with them you can be be seen as been proud or boastful. Let me use myself as example, rather than saying I have great leadership skills, I will say I discovered that there was no entrepreneurial community that made me to start a student business club and within 1 year we have over 1000 members, still counting and we have helped a lot of them with funding opportunity even the $5000 Tony Elumelu Foundation grant. We are currently setting structure and process in place to make sure that we connect more student entrepreneurs to funding opportunity. I now have a team of 10 students that work with me on this project.
So which sounds better?
I have great leadership skills or the one above? Obviously for you to have done all this you must have a great leadership skills.
So let your ACTION do the TALKING

4. Count Your lucky STARS:

However, the secret of describing the Situation (S), Task (T), your Actions (A) and the Result (R) which altogether makes a STAR — is definitely good practice in application forms, and particularly in interviews. Just don’t spend too long on the situation and task, as I’m most interested in what you actually did.
Be careful while using this secret, just as I said above don’t waste time talking about Situation (S) and Task (T) it is important you talk about them a bit because it will give them understanding what lead to your Actions (A) and the Result (R).

NYSCService Year Boulevard---from Camp Love To "Yes, I Do" by ugofwesh(op): 7:19pm On May 22, 2018
This might just be NYSC and meeting point story rolled into 1 so it will be a long read. I apologise

Anyway to my NYSC story I hope I don’t bore you. It was 2010 and I was posted to kebbi state. Me, fresh lagos babe! I died and woke up!

I still go to my Facebook post of that period to laugh, as I announced to my friends how God was trying to punish me for something I had done wrong. Little did I know.
Anyway time to resume,I had to fly to sokoto and then do a 1 and half hour road trip to kebbi (no airport in kebbi state). Luckily for me I made 2 wonderful connections on that flight, another corper who was posted to kebbi and went on to become my closest buddy and flatmate for the NYSC year and a PPA hook up ( the Director- General of an NGO who struck up a conversation with my new friend and I) the conversation flowed effortlessly as she was a biochemistry graduate and I, a microbiologist and the NGO had to do with healthcare in communities. That was just God showing up for us really.
The man was elderly and wasn’t like he was interested in tapping ass or anything, was just genuinely interested in gisting with intelligent and good looking ladies.
Okay, so we arrived NYSC camp, oh Lord kebbi temperature was hot like mad! After all the rigors of registration and all what not my friend and I finally settled with a mattress and our new otondo kit in a dilapidated classroom around 1am, that was to be our hostel room with several other ladies for 3 weeks.

Chai falling hand tinz.
Me that used to form creme babe, omo I had to adjust sharp sharp. Bathing in the morning with freezing cold water, OUTSIDE! (it was February batch A and there was still harmattan , God forbid me use those bathrooms that looked like lizard shrines) and yet sunshine like burning fire from 10am. A truly confusing situation.
First day on parade ground I couldn’t cope. Soldiers wanted to use me to catch trips, asked me to frog jump cos I wasn’t matching well. Omo na him I start to form asthma oh. Start to dey hyperventilate. People were looking and pitying me, i even heard someone say eeya see ajebo (for my mind i laff, no be only ajebo, i dont just have the energy nor stamina for such stress)
Soldier just shout red cross come carry this girl oh. E be like she wan die.
Red cross came and wheeled me off parade ground, gave me glucose and cold something to drink, can’t even remember what it is. I used that opportunity to chill under the wonderful shade of a big tree.
That is how my guardian angel came in form of the red cross Leader and told me to join red cross since I don’t have stamina to be doing parade with them.
Hmmmm sharp sharp, I signed up with red cross and became vip!
No parade ground, no matching, once the soldiers come to wake us up at that ungodly hour of the morning, I wear my white otondo uniform grab my friend and off to the red cross room to continue our sweet sleep.
Oh how wonderful camp turned out for me. I had a good time, many guys were on my case, as a fine girl that I is na! I didnt send them cos i had one boyfriend in lagos that was shacking me then (yeye somebody) Lol.
I still hooked up with my platoon people and made a lot of good friends there, guys and ladies I am still in contact with till date. I ate only mami food. I ate camp food once, only once! And I got food poisoning, purged and vomited my life out!( my system is sensitive like that). Was on drip for several hours cause I had lost so much fluid. It wasn’t funny.
Variety nite (end of camp) my platoon forced me to contest for miss camp, I won! They gave me fridge. Lol . It was useful during my NYSC year. Plus thats how my hubby found me (he saw me in a picture with a friend of mine who also contested from another platoon and told her he liked me)

I was determined to relocate after camp but my friend convinced me to stay
(apparently she was a daddy’s girl all through uni and was looking forward to NYSC year as her year of freedom) I don’t know the kind of juju she used to talk me but I stayed plus we had kept in contact with that D-G of the NGO and God so good he worked our posting to his NGO which was a blessing cos not only did they pay well, we got a very wonderful working experience from there which I still refer to till date. We were posted to the same PPA in birnin-kebbi the capital. Go to this link for the full gist

NYSCThe Awesome Chronicle Of A Lagos Corper by ugofwesh(op): 11:04pm On May 17, 2018
To my main gist smiley cheesy,it is a bit lengthy but just pardon me.I am a young man close to my mid 30s.I schooled in Benue state, spent close to 7years in school due to incessant external, internal strike and unnecessary breaks. My youth service call-up came very late and besides I couldn’t go with my mates due to some delays from my department.Apparently my service year was full of God’s favour.

Before my service year,I was really hoping to serve in Abuja or Lagos state.Lo and behold! God used a senator to bless me,i was asked to choose between Lagos state and Abuja for my service,I had to choose Lagos state because I was used to Lagos lifestyle.I was in Owerri when our call-up letter came out,I had to rush down to Makurdi the next day.

As soon as I got to school to check my name on the notice board,I saw some students jubilating and equally crying.Lo and behold!i saw my name posted to Lagos state.I kept calm, though i was excited.I gave God all the glory.I rushed back to Owerri the next day to get prepared. There was a flight delay when I was leaving Owerri for Lagos due to bad weather (rainy season).lest I forget,my service year was in 2012.

My flight arrived Lagos very late,I picked a cab direct from Ikeja airport to Iyana Ipaja camp,it was already dark but I had to proceed with my registration.

I didn’t experience anything like frog jump or luggage carrying on the head while checking in at the entrance gate, maybe the soldiers thought every corper sent to Lagos camp is an “ajebutter” or a minister’s son or daughter lol!.

I noticed many people were calling me Mr Macho and Mr NYSC right from camp gate including the vendors across the road and the soldiers at the gate.Hmmmm! I was just wondering why were they tagging me as one,was it because of my physique or “ugly face”? Though I felt so.Not that I was the finest or the sexiest in camp so why the fuss.Lol! Though I was very sweet and okay as a dude.

I finished my registration that same night and I was given a bunk in the hostel. It felt so good to be paired with “soji” guys in the same room, most of them were UniBen graduates and Unilag graduates.
The whole camp ground that night was so messed up due to heavy downpour that very day.Unfortunately,I lost one of my phones that night due to “rush rush o”,i tire o!

welcome to Eko oni baje.

As I was standing in the queue to take a passport for proper documentation, some corpers were pointing at me,calling me Mr Macho, some were even saying they would want me to be in the same platoon with them thinking you can select a platoon by yourself. But honestly, the attention I was getting that night made me uncomfortable and a bit shy though I was a quiet soji guy o

That's true. But protecting your business or idea should be core to you, besides angel investments usually becomes interesting when your business is above the ground floor and growing at a fast pace, such as andela. most applicants have simply brilliant ideas. Wether it's incubation or seed funding they are sure having higher stakes in that idea when it turns into a business, and might possibly bring in their guy as CEO to manage the business. My VEX is that this avdd was overhyped, as it doesn't protect the interest of the upcoming nigerian entrepreneurs. What they need is free financing and mentorship and a stringent follow up programme ensuring this is achieved. Why expose this young start ups to sharks. We need vibrancy in other areas of the sector, that is why these entrepreneurs have to be properly mentored to customize their products for the nigerian market. Angel investors my ass!.. with the hatdtimes we are facing no investor is giving free money and if they like your idea they are coming hard for funding and hard for shares in your business.
The avdd is a nice idea but the aproach is totally wrong!

Since you stay at abuja, just go for the abuja pitch. your code is what uniquely identifies u irregardless of your where they texted you to come pitch. i stay at ph but was told to come pitch at lagos, i declined for ph.

Okay everyone,i smell something fishy here. Best case scenario, you are being selected as one of the fifty to come pitch at aso rock. There is no free funding, if not venture capitalists and angel investors would not be present at the demo day. whenever venture capitalists are around they give either debt financing or exchange shares in your business for money. Most of us are all startuppers and giving our shares at this early stage is not healthy. Secondly, our ideas stand the risk of idea theft.

My point is that this isn't borne out of pure interest for we young startuppers,if not the terms of the financing would have been clearly stated and free mentorship would have been attached to it. Why bring in investors and vc''shuh..
My opinion o, feel free to clarify the air.
