Chika Obiakonwa wrote: I don't like this thing about widows demonstrating on the streets of Owerri. If you're truly a widow, who takes care of your vulnerable children when u spend the whole day on the streets? I'm sure your dead husband will equally be unhappy about this. Pls leave politics for our politicians. |
Acts of Desperation! Earlier today, a large number of women dressed in black and numbering about 100+ trooped into Owerri in about 15 of 18 sitter buses. They assembled in front of Union Bank, Okigwe Rd branch. After a brief meeting, they brandished placards on which was written derogatory statements addressed to the person of Governor Owelle Rochas. They proceeded to Douglas House Entrance, causing traffic gridlock. They chanted songs in rhythm to their placards. They told people who cared to listen that they are widows from Imo and they have come to tell the world that Owelle has failed Imo state. Luck ran out on them when a keke driver sighted some of the women whom he knew. He called out to them and asked them why they left Abia state for Owerri to protest against Imo state Governor. He asked them why they could not protest against their Governor who has been unable to carry out a tangible project in Abia state yet they came this far to insult the best performing Governor in South East. When they could not give a cogent answer, other passengers in the keke who were already upset that these women who had caused a hitch in their plans for the day and were purported to be widows from Imo state, were not after all, who they appeared to be. Immediately, they alighted and asked the women to clear from the road, the women resisted and this led to a scuffle, other road users alighted and joined to chase the women off the road. Soon, women from Ekeonunwa market who got hint of the protest by the Abia women arrived alongside women from other communities, to Govt House ring road and helped to chase these women away. Some of these women from Abia state were questioned and they opened up in confidence that the Minister for State Education; Viola Onwuliri, had attempted mobilizing women from Imo state for the protest but Imo state women declined to because they love the best performing incumbent governor of Imo state and had nothing against him to protest for which was what led to mobilizing Abia women. Just as these Imo women and other road users were about dispersing, Soldiers from 34 Artillery Brigade Obinze, trooped in and began harassing people, detained some men in their waiting Hilux. They beat up some innocent pedestrians and dragged them into the waiting Hilux. At this point, the Imo women gathered again and began singing in praise of Owelle, also requested for them to release their detained children. These soldiers declined to, stating that they are acting on orders from above. The women were relentless as they stood their ground and continued chanting songs in praise of Owelle. It took the timely intervention of the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports, DG Rochas Campaign Organization and Hon Commissioner for Lands , before these soldiers released the wounded men in their custody. It did not last up to 10mins after these men were released that the amiable Governor Owelle Rochas arrived. He greeted the women and thousands of people who arrived while the situation escalated. They responded happily , cheering him. He went ahead to say that he was in Abuja this morning when he learnt of the situation and had to take the next available flight to Owerri in order to answer to his people. He reiterated that his love for the good people of Imo led him to abandon his mission in Abuja and came home. To this, the people assured him that there is no vacancy in Douglas House come this 2015. It could be recalled that a similar event occurred on 26th of last month when some hired thugs hijacked the endorsement rally organized by Imo state students, went on rampage in the guise of the students and destroyed property worth hundreds of millions in the state. PDP is desperate. # VotenotFight. An eye witness report |
