Autos / Re: Let's Calculate The Total Cost Of Clearing Your Car From Tincan Island Port by Underdogg(m): 9:48am On Jan 16, 2021
Thanks sir!
Please by shipping fee do you mean the cost of freighting the car from abroad (in container or RORO) or is it additional charges incurred by the shipping company when the ar has arrived at the port?

kaysy:

Mercedes Benz 2015 - $9,498
Toyota Corolla 2016 - $7,915

Use same calculation above, shipping fee, terminal charges and others for vehicles above 2012 should not be less than N200,000

Hello Sir,
It is always a frustrating black box when you work with clearing agents and you don't know what's going on or who to trust.
Thanks for your good work and transparency. May value continue to appreciate and never depreciate.
1. Please can you estimate the clearing cost for 2015 C300 Mercedes benz and also a 2016 Toyota Corolla.
2. Do you think it is better to wait until the revised tariff is implemented before shipping so the clearing costs can (hopefully) be lower?

Thanks and God bless you as you respond.

Hello good NIPOST people,
Please can you tell me how I can identify which Post Office to collect my item from?
I am in Port Harcourt and the tracking states the item delivered at NGRIV.
Please can you advise the code for each post office location in Rivers state?
Thanks!

Don't be annoyed oh... But would it hurt to spell 'you' and 'yours' correctly?
This isn't an instant message, settle down... take your time to read over.
You have a very lovely post but those spelling issues make reading it feel like eating rice and having to crush tiny rocks hidden among the grains.
Packaging comes in different forms!
I hope you wont come back at me with insults I really mean well.

And yes please add Lagos Rain.

Hello Underdogg,

Extended questioning would not, but if you're still unsure and you meet all the other requirements, go ahead and submit via dropbox and we will call you in for an interview if we see anything that needs to be discussed in person.

Regards,
Abuja NIV Team

Hi Abuja NIV Team,
So we submitted our passports via dropbox for renewal and about a week later the status online changed to 'Administrative processing'.
I received a call for my wife and I to come for interview on any Monday or Wednesday within one year.
How do I get further appointment details for this invitation? Is it that we just show up there with my DS160 confirmation printout? Or do we have to set up a proper appointment?
Also, does the consular office shut down for Christmas break? If yes, what is the last working day in December?

Thanks in advance.

Hello an thanks for your help so far.
Please my question is regarding the last "commandment" on eligibility for B1/B2 visa renewal via dropbox:
'The applicant has never been arrested nor had an encounter with law enforcement, customs, or immigration officials in the United States.'

Does extended CBP questioning at POE constitute an encounter with customs officials?

Would that disqualify an applicant from using dropbox for renewal?

Thanks!

If you ask enough people, you'll get someone who will advise you to do what you were going to do anyway.

Dear friend... from what you've written it sounds like its already too late to be asking the questions you are asking.

By the way, why are you asking us? If you're oh so innocent with your friendship why not go ask your boyfriend these questions?

Hi people,
Heard gist (unfortunately, not enough information to independently verify) of an employer in Lagos that carried out a very simple exercise for interviewing applicants when they advertised an entry level position:
Applicant to please provide a handwritten essay on why they would like to take the job.
None of the invited applicants on interview day made it.

My point is, the system is warped to the point where we may not be able to believe credentials anymore. Can we really blame employers on the look out for foreign degrees?

But here's a wicked twist to it all:
How do you propose to motivate someone to read when it has been publicly proven, repeatedly, that you don't have to be all that smart to make the big bucks?

Most recruitment efforts by big companies take forever.
I guess aptitude tests are a means of narrowing down the applicants... so if NLNG receive a jillion applications, they may need to slash down the numbers with aptitude tests.

Hi good people,
All I hear, see, read about these days is NIGERIA IS A FAILED STATE. Corruption everywhere every time. Crude oil theft threatening to cripple the economy. National security challenges especially in the North. Education sector at a standstill. Religious and cultural division and discrimination in almost any public forum. Skyhigh unemployment. Nigerians either behaving badly or being behaved badly to abroad. Need I talk about our power sector?
But haba! Na only us!!? Today I'm thinking differently. I refuse to submit to negativity. I choose to stubbornly seek for the good in all this. But its actually quite hard for me so I need your help. Lets write out all the good things about Nigeria (no sarcasm please)... maybe if we can all develop a nice long list and read it over and over again it will at least make us feel a little better about our lot in life.
I can think of U-17 Cup victory.
I can think of beautiful ladies with the sexiest bodies on earth.
I can think of very nice sunny weather for many months in the year.
Can you think of something good about our country?

You want to sign up for Linkedin? Why not? Its a brilliant way to build your professional network and its free.

En-hen people, now I'm feeling you.
labongua, afrobaby, thanks for your frank feedback.

@ fflamingo
I'm glad you wrote back to clarify your position, I appreciate that we can still keep our communication lines open and also possibly have a positive exchange of ideas. I'm actually quite a sociable person, its just that I treat people with respect and I expect them to do the same to me...
As you requested, generally, its not proper to say 'people like you' because it indicates that you have assessed (judged) my personality (even though we have never met and you know nothing about me except the words I have writen) and placed me in a certain group separate from the mainstream and therefore subject to potential negative effects of discrimination. If for example you were a white person, you get to a congregation of black or Puerto Ricans in say, downtown Detroit, and say 'You people/People like you', you would be in serious trouble.
Career / Re: Should I Be Adding Strangers To My Professional Network On LINKEDIN? by Underdogg(m): 7:52am On Oct 29, 2013
Dear fflamingo, please go back and look at the salutation on my opening post. It reads 'Hi Professionals!'.
Professionals address each other with courtsey. Cmann77 opened his post by saying 'U r either sufferin 4rm paranoia or u have a parochial mindset or even both.did u jst join linkedin?'. That wasn't ok. I didn't 'kinda insult' him, I just wrote back to him in the same flavour as he wrote to me... I'm glad it made you feel bitter, now you know how I felt when I read his post.
By the way, please be careful, writing 'people like you' is judgemental and could get you sued or damage very valuable professional relationships... I'd steer clear of that kind of terminology if I were you. As for your statement 'so u gave him MB to load on his phone or you add To his intellectual capacity by giving you such advise.......'
I honestly don't understand what you are trying to say.
Did you mean that he posted in SMS language because he was trying to economise on data? Or that it was wrong to advise that he should restrict such writing style to sending of SMSs? Sorry for trying to be helpful... but its very easy to forget yourself and write this way in an official letter, say, to a bank, a school, maybe even your boss. I was only trying to help.
And finally, what exactly more do you need me to TOLERATE? I'm responding to these posts aren't I?

All I asked the house was:
How do I respond to a total stranger's request to be added to my professional network? Is it courteous to ask the person why they are requesting? How can I determine if this is just a random weirdo/stalker/admirer or my next potential recruiter?
Career / Re: Should I Be Adding Strangers To My Professional Network On LINKEDIN? by Underdogg(m): 7:33pm On Oct 28, 2013
cman77: U r either sufferin 4rm paranoia or u have a parochial mindset or even both.did u jst join linkedin? Well der r many pple like u on linkedin who have dis kind of attitude.linkedin is a professional networkin platform,it is not facebook, myspace, instagram etc.from ur post u r der 4 job opportunity which is ok but it transcends beyond to.on linkedin u share ideas abt happenins in d industry/career path u have chosen,u network with oda professionals, therefore der is absolutely nofin wrong in connectin with sm1 u havnt met b4.must u knw d pple u wanna connet wif first b4 der r added to ur network?

I don't appreciate the rude and abusive tone of your post.
If you were half as knowledgeable about LINKEDIN as you claim to be, then you would obviously know that section 10.2 of the User Agreement states 'Don't undertake the following: (item 5) Invite people you do not know to join your network'. Did you even bother to read the user agreement? Or are user agreements left for only the paranoid and parochial? Apparently random people have not yet written to you requesting for confidential information about your workplace or hustling you for a contract or employment? Probably not.
In future I recommend that you take time to consider the implications of your post before you publish. You don't know me, and the anonymity afforded to you by your NL profile doesn't grant you the license to be a jerk.
PS: Please also try to take time to type out your words, your communication style says a lot about your personality. This isn't an SMS.

Career / Should I Be Adding Strangers To My Professional Network On LINKEDIN? by Underdogg(m): 12:34pm On Oct 27, 2013
Hi Professionals!
Lately I re-connected with a couple of friends who recently picked up good jobs with multinational companies, and all through LINKEDIN.
This has led to me taking the Prodfessional Networking site a whole lot more seriously, considering that one never knows when or where his/her next big break might show up from...Updated profile, pimped personal summaries, the works.
My issue is this: How do I respond to a total stranger's request to be added to my professional network?
Is it courteous to ask the person why they are requesting? I mean, unlike a multitude of my 'friends' on facebook (no offense pls, fans), I'd like to be able to at least account for all the acquintances on my professional network!!!!

How can I determine if this is just a random weirdo/stalker/admirer or my next potential recruiter?
Properties / Re: What Drives Real Estate Valuation In Nigeria? by Underdogg(m): 12:14pm On Oct 27, 2013
Hi guys! Been offline for only a bit and yet Ive missed out on so much of the gist...
I have a pretty rough idea (corroborated by your posts) of how the real estate systems work in other countries and I acknowledge that each have their own pluses and minuses. But even if I don’t compare Nigeria to other countries, as a middleclass income earrner (btw 15-20M annual gross) shouldn’t I be given fair opportunity to decide whether I want to rent, buy my home outrightly or if I want to take a mortgage to do so?

Orgasticdance mentioned that there are only 4 megacities and 170+ million persons. So if we had more megacities would the pricing in each drop? Are you sure? Or would we just have a lot more cities that people can’t afford to have houses in?

Bugmenot recommended taking up properties in the distant outskirts where the prices are lower. No problem. How many hours will I spend commuting daily? How much additional expense on transport? Vehicle maintenance? Can we put a tag on exposure to the risk of road traffic accidents or violent crime(which increase exponentially with time spent out on the road)? But all that is not life! Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum, what about all the fancy estates developed in the so called choice areas? Aren’t they supposed to be for people like me? Or have you not noticed that a good number of them are actually empty? What becomes of these buildings? My point is that something must be deeply wrong for those properties to have been valued at such high prices.

As for taxes… be it property tax or whichever, many of us well meaning Nigerians can’t even afford to acquire the property first, before beginning to frown at the tax thereafter. As for me, I wouldn’t mind paying… after all, to this date I still haven’t been able to figure out what happens to all the tax that has been deducted from all my payslips since I started earning salary. So what else is new?

The essence of my post is to seek answers to a burning question: How successful do I have to be to afford the basic necessities of life which our local environment has made out to look like comforts? The regular power supply, good road access, pleasant landscaping including adequate storm draining, standard healthcare, good quality schools etc.

Is there a a ‘Nigerian Dream’? Am I entitled to it? Has the Nigerian system failed me (yet again) or are my expectations (esp. on real estate matters) unrealistic?

I know that none of you good folks can wave a wand and make all this wahala go away, but I'm getting very strong points and thought-out responses from highly intelligent posters who, like me, are not cool with the status quo. And aside from rekindling my hope, it takes the pain away, even if only for a little while.
Properties / Re: What Drives Real Estate Valuation In Nigeria? by Underdogg(m): 6:15pm On Oct 17, 2013
In other words no show for an honest man rising through the ranks?
@ kopel... does this mean it wasnt as bad as this before 9-11? Haba... do these people even ever stop to think about the amounts they append to these properties?
How can I remain in my right mind and buy a plot of land in Lekki for upward of 30mill and still have to sand fill it because I got a very choice chunk of West African Swamp/marshland/reclaimed Atlantic Ocean? With rusty brown 'potable' water... come on!
Properties / What Drives Real Estate Valuation In Nigeria? by Underdogg(m): 1:55pm On Oct 12, 2013
How is it that real estate is so costly in this country? Why?
Are the prices of land and landed properties in any way controlled by demand and supply market forces? How is it that in this our beloved country, plagued with religious, political, economic, social and all sorts of insecurity, a so-called choice real estate is available at costs which meet and in some cases exceed those in Tokyo, California, Paris, London? What drives the valuation? I am almost losing my mind trying to figure this out. Why does property in Nigeria cost so much to own?
I understand that there are super-rich Nigerians out there, but what percentage of the population are they? According to World Bank, about 67% of Nigerians live below the poverty line. If there are so few extremely rich and so many extremely poor, then who can afford all these high end properties? Certainly not the middle class… I happen to be middle class and, having looked around, I get the sinking feeling that I can’t afford to own the kind of housing I believe my family deserves. I’ve been to Lekki (Lagos), Garki (Abuja) or Trans Amadi (PH) and it saddens me to see those houses… actually there… but so unbelievably expensive… and so frustratingly unoccupied. And please don’t tell me about loans or mortgage financing because to me, the available interest rates as at now look like a polite way of asking the low to middle income earners I.e. the general populace, to go to blazes.
So who owns all these properties? And who do the owners expect to buy them? If I were a super rich guy I wouldn't go buying a terraced house from some other rich guy, I'd probably go build my own set of terraced houses. But if I couldn't sell them off would that be a good enough investment?
Can anyone please explain what is happening on Nigeria’s real estate market scene?
How sustainable is this (in my honest opinion) madness?
