CareerRe: My Advise For The Just Passed Out Corpers. by undisputedk: 10:06pm On Apr 22, 2016
semochendo1:
MY ADVISE TO THE JUST PASSED OUT CORPERS

Five years ago while rounding up our national youth service, our LI used to tell us to prepare ahead, that a time is coming when ordinary N100 to shave will be so hard to produce, myself and most of my colleagues will look at him as if he doesn't know what he was saying, we thought he was cursing us and that statement was always furiously rejected. Until 5months after service, when the job I got after service refused to pay me for 4months, my beards got so bushy and the reality was downed on me. I can never forget the day I asked my brother to send me a recharge card, and I used it to pay for shaving my beards. The barber agreed to pay me N150 for a N200 mtn card, I shaved for N100 and he gave me N50. Funny? #Smiles.

Dear coppers, let me start by congratulating you on your successful completion of a national assignment. Nothing is more joyous than completing a tedious journey that looks unending from inception. It's worth celebrating and your hearts should be filled with gratitude, because not all that started the journey were able to complete it, you are here not because you are holier, but by the grace of God.. As you read now, just say "God, I sincerely thank you for your grace upon my life", Alhamdullilah.

As much as I congratulate you, I would like to prepare your mind for the challenges ahead. The overcoming of one challenge in life is the initiation of another one. Let me sincerely welcome you to the labour market, a market where it's not about "what" you know but "who" you know, a market where majority of the sellers(employees) sells their products(job offer) to the sons and daughters of people that matters, and not to the credible buyers.

This may look like parables but let me demystify it. It's easier for a camel to pass through the needle's eye than getting a dream job in Nigeria today. Many blame the government, system etc, but my candid advise is, don't join in the blame game. Face the reality of your life and take 100% responsibility for your financial destiny.

In most cases I pity the female job seekers, they face a lot of temptation and frustration in the process of job hunting. The truth is, no matter how difficult it is to get a job, some will still get it cheaply by favour, I pray you are one of them, but the fact is, not everyone will.

Below are my candid advise, so you don't end up with bushy beards like me or get frustrated to the point of engaging in the things that will bring you eternal regret.

1. Be ready to take full responsibility for your life, even though you have Uncles, Brothers etc who might have promised you jobs, never rely on them. Take your own actions, nothing is more disappointing than dependence on third party factor variable.

2. Design your life after service, with or without job, make it in a tabular form. Write everything you need to do everyday in search of your dream job, and write alternative source of income you could engage yourself pending the arrival of the uncertain job. No bicycle gains stability without moving, for you to enjoy life stability and fulfilment, you have to keep moving.

3. Improve your habit of self discipline to do what you've written out to do on a daily basis, give no room for excuses. Think outside your challenges.

4. Cut your expenses according to your budget, don't follow crowd in living a materialistic life that may be too expensive for you to maintain. Cut relationship that's not leading to marriage now, they are the liabilities that will slow down your wheels of activities/success.

5. Be prayerful, God can meet you at a point you least expected...

If anyone has advice for these friends, let's drop it for them.

Note that It's not about reading this advice, It's about using it. I guarantee you 100% success if you can follow it.

If you are interested in starting a business of yours, you can contact me for mentorship, I have little experience that may guide you.

All the best.
Good tips you shared up there. I'm interested in discussing your business( cleaning service) with you . How you started, the prospects, challenges etc.

I'd have advised the Corp members to seize the opportunity of the 1 year period to develop themselves as regards employability, well that'd be too late now. However, your suggestions are in order too. They should take it. But most importantly, the grace of God is what they need.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Friday pledged to assist the Republic of Gambia in the review and smooth implementation of its National Youth Service Scheme (GNYSS) Act 2016.

Sule Kazaure, director-general of the NYSC, said this when Alieu Jammeh, the Gambian minister of youths and sports, paid him a visit in Abuja.

He said the NYSC had become a symbol of national unity and solidarity, and because of this unique role many African leaders were seeking to establish the scheme in their countries.

He said some of the countries included Zimbabwe, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Liberia.

He said the NYSC had introduced and initiated programmes over the years which have insured the sustenance and growth of the scheme.

He assured the minister of Nigerian government’s support, saying: “It is not wrong to say that the GNYSS has taken root because of the support of the NYSC and we will do all we can to assist”.

Earlier, Jammeh said the support of the NYSC was critical as its knowledge and successes recorded in implementing programmes and initiatives for the youths would help in addressing the challenges in implementing the new act.

He lauded the NYSC for promoting patriotism and love for country among Nigerian youths through posting corps members to various parts of the country to serve in different areas.

He said the initiative compelled corps members to cohabit with others from different tribes and religion, thereby learning necessary skills and acquiring the experience needed to be patriotic and serve the country.

“We thought that just like you are doing here in Nigeria targeting young people through national service period and introducing them to the practicalism of employment so that they can learn how to address their immediate needs,” he said.

“We realised that here in Nigeria you have been able to address those challenges effectively and in addition through engagement in national service corps members have realised the elements of patriotism and knowledge of country.

“We have seen the benefit of that and we thought we can do the same in the Gambia by introducing a component of our national service that will ensure youths go and do minimum of six months and maximum of 18 months national service in any sector of the economy as a requirement.

“Because of this, we have reviewed the GNYSS Act which now makes it compulsory for all new grandaunts to have a period to serve the nation before you can ask for formal employment in the public sector.

“We are trying to see how this will work and how the public will react to it because as you know the challenges facing Gambia just like other countries is very similar.”

He said the country was eager to create programmes that would ensure that the youths were properly groomed and nurtured to be patriotic to the contry.

The minister said through the new act, the government was also trying to find a common ground by training youths who could not go through formal education and those who did.

He said most youths who completed their formal education had no skill or training to enable them sustain themselves and make a living hence the need to train them.

“In 1996, the Republic of Gambia did not have a university and so we did not have the issues that Nigeria and other countries were battling with until now,” he said.

“Today in the Gambia after many years of trying to establish a university which was a very bold decision taken by the government, we have challenges of what we can do for young people who go to university.

“In the vision we have, we need to come back here to seek assistance on how we can strengthen the institution to function effectively and efficiently.

“Because of the long standing relationship between the NYSC and the GNYSS we needed to pay you a courtesy visit to thank you for the assistance you extended to us in the formative years of our GNYSS.

“Your assistance was based on technical help which was provided by the Nigerian government and the people of Nigeria. On behalf of the President and the people of Gambia we thank you most sincerely.

“We are also here to inform you about what we want to do and how you can help us to achieve those objectives. We want to pilot the project this year.”

GNYSC was established in 1996 through the technical assistance of the NYSC.

No none of the above I believe because awhile ago, a friend of mine that has been trying to access his CUL since yesterday without success including from myself oo and till this afternoon actually got it done by me at exactly around some minutes past 3:00

After the report of 'PARAMETER NOT VALID' report throughout and according to him, they even went to d Cafe that another female friend of ours in GC printed hers without success still.

Only for NEPA to restore light and Bam! One more trial by me got d job done.

So that is how the trend will continue till Wednesday oo for those who sees 'PARAMETER NOT VALID' report

Whereas, 'NO DETAILS FOUND' means automatic STREAM II

Is the Nysc management planning to have more than two streams?
I'm confused because
1. I strongly feel that the stream 1 members aren't up to 50% of the mobilized PCMs.

2. The stream we purportedly belong was not expressly indicated in the circulated messages.

3. Also surprisingly, two set of sms are being circulated ; one signalling that the CUL for the next stream would be accessible as from the 13th of next month, and the other one that looked somewhat generic.

These are just my keen observations, let me know if you harbour similar thoughts or otherwise. In any case, I'd advice we remain steadfast and keep the the Nysc management on their toes. Some rumours are flying around already. We shall not let them shy away from their responsibility.

You may need to get the trackpad replaced. In the meantime, you can use a mouse.

Next time, when something like that happens and the laptop is powered on, immediately power it off, disconnect the charger and remove the battery.

If the laptop is not powered on, do not be tempted to immediately turn on the laptop to verify that it's working.

Just disconnect everything immediately and place the laptop upside down so as to prevent the liquid from getting further into the circuitry. Get a clean piece of cloth and clean the spilled liquid.

Leave the laptop to dry for as long as possible before trying to test it (maybe a day or two).

Then, you may want to take it apart and do some more cleaning.
Thank you. I appreciate.

BusinessRe: The Naira In 2016: To Devalue Or Not To Devalue? by undisputedk: 2:56pm On Feb 20, 2016
LRNZH:
It is a long story but I will stick to the short of it.
BDC's really started under Babangida. They are given licenses when they meet CBN's steep criteria (some huge amount of deposit), to buy Forex officially and sell at the black (what we call parallel market).

Right now, they are making a killing but truth be told, the real BDC licensees are far and few in between. Most of the 'mallams' you see on the streets are like 7 or 8 down in the chain of sellers from the BDC. So it is not easy to become a licensed BDC operator and make all this gain for yourself.

The whole system is riddled with corruption- allegations of CBN top people being the brains behind licensed BDCs abound. This part of the reason why we have to end the dichotomy of official and black market at some point .
I have read elsewhere where some persons have proposed that the disparity between the two prices maybe shortened by devaluation, while some have argued that unless the naira is 'floated', we'd continue to have the differences. Whatever that means anyways. Please can you shed some light on the adverse effects of having the two markets and how does 'floating'(another vocabulary I see being around around lately) seek to help the naira.

Yet again sir, I'm yet to get the answers to my first question.
When a BDC operator gives me about 400 naira for a dollar, how does he make a profit?
I'm deeply sorry for being an economic pain in your arse. I just need to understand that basic phenomenon. :-(
BusinessRe: The Naira In 2016: To Devalue Or Not To Devalue? by undisputedk: 2:22pm On Feb 20, 2016
Good day. As we continue to flog this pertinent economic issue, lately I've found myself devour so many materials yet understand so little. Unless one does not handle money then economics may not be that important. Well who doesn't anyway.
That said, may I use the opportunity of this interesting thread to find answers to some questions bothering on the fx crisis.

Firstly, How do Bureau the Change operators make their money?
I know that a dollar exchange for about 200 at the banks (they say it's the official price), but these operators change at a higher price compared to that. How is it done? I hear those monies are repatriated to the CBN. What and how does it affect the economy.

I have other questions but I kindly seek answer to this first. I don't intend to derail the thread, I'm just a confused soul. Thanks.
