Dear OP, the sun is a body of light itself, while the moon is an opaque mass. There is no how the sun will cast a shadow on the moon. Instead, the earth, which is opaque too, blocks sun rays from reaching the moon. The degree of the blockage determines the arc of the shadow seen.
