The crown prince of Benin Kingdom, Prince Eheneden Erediauwa, has warned the Peoples Democratic Party to stop using his visit to President Goodluck Jonathan to acquire votes ahead of the general election.

Prince Erediauwa, who urged the public to disregard the use of his pictures, images, audio and video to campaign for votes, said he is not a member of any political party.

The Benin Prince noted that his visit to the Presidential villa as directed by his father, Oba Erediuawa, was to extinguish negative comments that the Oba does not support the government of President Jonathan.

He stated that reference by some PDP politicians to his father’s statement that “President Jonathan will be given the opportunity to continue his good work” was being misinterpreted.

Eheneden said the prayer came to pass by way of the President being nominated as presidential candidate of the PDP.

The prince, who spoke in a statement signed by the secretary to Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, said his father’s message was politically manipulated by some self-serving politicians in order to gain the upper hand in soliciting for votes.

The statement said, “The Oba of Benin is a non-partisan traditional ruler who treats all politicians equally and always pray for all those who are into partisan politics and other ventures.”

Meanwhile, royal palace chiefs led by the traditional Prime Minister of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe, the Iyase of Benin, has restated that the Benin monarch has not endorsed any candidate for the March 28 presidential election.

Chief Igbe, who read a statement issued at the end of the chiefs’ meeting, urged electronic media houses to stop showing the prince’s visit to President Jonathan.

It will be recalled that the declaration of the Esogban of Benin Kingdom and chairman of Benin Forum, Chief David Edebiri, that the Binis would not vote for President Goodluck Jonathan has caused a verbal war among palace chiefs in Benin Kingdom.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Cardinal John Onaiyekan in this exclusive interview with Sahara reporters condemned the criticisms directed at the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), following the controversy surrounding his health and certificates.

The revered Archbishop also said there is a general air of fear and anxiety in the atmosphere; expressed by the fact that many people are moving their families to where they consider safe havens.

He attributed post-election violence to the disappointment or even anger at election results that are perceived to be not in line with the reality of the votes cast.

Onaiyekan advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), not to be partisan saying the body should be independent as its name says.

In the same vein, he advised security agents to protect every Nigerian citizen and all political parties without bias.

On the controversy surrounding Buhari’s certiificate,  Onaiyekan posits that it is an uncivilized attitude towards the election.

Recall that 4weeks ago, Onaiyekan said given the rules of the Catholic church, Rev. Fr. Mbaka ought to be sanctioned for his recent comments on President Goodluck Jonathan.

An unconfirmed report says the chief of army staff, Lt Gen Kenneth Minimah, will install an interim military government if the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), wins the February 14 presidential poll. 

Citing “credible sources”, Abusidiqu.com reports that top level chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and their counterparts in the army have been having a series of  meetings to prepare for a Minimah-led interim military government if Buhari wins the elections.

According to the account, the current back-up plan by the Jonathan administration is for Minimah to lead an interim government for 6 months and then conduct new elections that will transfer power back to the PDP.

NewsRescue exclusively broke the news of an aide to Doyin Okupe, Deji Adeyanju, who earlier on hinted at this arrangement.

The purported blackberry messenger statement by Deji Adeyanju,  was alleged to have said “Buhari can never be president of Nigeria. Quote me any day any time. Instead of Buhari to become president of Nigeria, Nigeria would rather break. A military coup will even be allowed than for Buhari to become the president of a democratic Nigeria quote me any day, any time.”

Although the federal government disassociated itself from the purported statement, sources say the Jonathan government plans to instigate riots and is planning to use Niger Delta ex-militants to stage attacks that will enable the scuttling of the elections at any stage.

Whether this report is true or not remains to be seen as the authenticity of the report cannot be independently verified.

Meanwhile, the APC last week said President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP are terrified of the outcome of next month’s presidential election, hence their efforts to postpone the general election in its entirety.

The Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG) reacted to the allegations that the body had leaked debate questions to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Goodluck Jonathan.

It should be recalled that it was obtained yesterday that vice presidential and presidential debates had been officially fixed for 1 and 8 February.

Soon the rumours emerged that the ruling party had received the questions in advance. The NEDG chairman, Shola Omole, however dismissed the information while briefing journalists in Abuja, Vanguard reports.

According to Omole, their group is made up of  the media and people of impeccable characters from the society who are impartial in terms of the elections outcome.  The NEDG chairman also disclosed that the questions were still being worked on.

“As of right now I can say that 13 political parties have confirmed that they will attend the debate. We are still working on it and we still have a few days to go before the debate.

“I will like to state that the NEDG is not a partisan organization but a collection of media people, civil society organizations, professional associations who have an interest in ensuring that Nigerians have better adequate and relevant information to enhance their ability to be able to take a decision on voting day.

As we speak, the questions that are going to be asked on the date of the debate are still being worked upon by our debate committee. Those questions are not ready; as I am speaking to you, the questions are not yet ready; there is still work in progress. Therefore, there is absolutely no reason why anybody will have the questions right now.”

The Media Consultant to the NEDG, Mr Taiwo Allimi, added that more than 3,000 questions had been submitted to the group from Nigerians saying that the debate would be “issues based and issues driven”.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has restrained five telecoms firms from suspending All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign fund-raising platform.

The Nation reports that Justice Ibrahim Buba on Wednesday made the ex-parte order following the party’s motion.

The court made an order of interim injunction restraining Etisalat, MTN, Glo, Airtel and Visafone from implementing the directive given by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) which barred them from running political promotions that will portray them as being partisan.

The judge directed the telecoms firms to continue to run, operate and/or restore to its full operative use the SMS Code platform 35350 created for fund-raising for the applicant’s presidential campaign.

It was gathered that the court’s orders are to subsist pending the hearing and determination of APC’s originating motion on notice.

Meanwhile, the court also granted APC leave to serve the originating motion on notice and other processes on NCC (the first defendant) outside the court’s jurisdiction following APC’s explanation that the platform is expected to operate till February 12 when campaign activities for the presidential election will end in line with Electoral Act and the election time-table.

However, in the originating motion, the party is demanding N25billion damages from the defendants for violating its fundamental rights and that of its members.

According to APC, since the platform was suspended, it has been unable to disseminate or receive information from its supporters via the SMS code 35350, adding that while the platform was suspended; NCC allowed that of President Goodluck Jonathan to run without a glitch.

The party said it created a “premium SMS code 35350″ through which willing donors could contribute to its presidential campaign fund, revealing that within hours of its creation, it was receiving about five messages of N100 each every minute amounting to a total of 5,400 messages received.

However, NCC in a letter issued on January 19, ordered all telecoms service providers to avoid running political advertisements that will portray them as being partisan, adding that it would not relent to sanction any service provider that flout the directive hence the telecoms firms suspended the fund raising platform.

But, APC has argued that political parties have been using different media platforms to advertise and none has been accused of being partisan.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, has described Didier Drogba as the club’s ‘best value player ever’ and insisted that the 36-year-old was ‘not finished yet.’

I was on my way to work on the morning of Monday, January 26, when my friend, Sodiq Alabi, sent me a Facebook message asking me how to contact THISDAY newspapers since I am more familiar with newspaper houses as a regular contributor to issues in national dailies.

Sodiq included in the message a web link to an article in THISDAY newspaper with the title, “Cambridge University: Hausa Language Not Offered in 1961 Exams”. I opened the article to see these

“The controversy over the secondary school results of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, continues as the  University of Cambridge has said that Hausa Language, which is one of the subjects listed by Buhari, was not offered in its examinations in 1961.

“The disclosure was contained in a statement from the office of the Director of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation claiming it came through an e-mail dated Thursday, January 22, 2015 from the institution’s Archives Delivery Service Officer, Jacky Emerson, to one SODIQ ALABI who requested for confirmation if the examination body offered Hausa Language in the 1961 West African Certificate Examination it organised.

“Emerson, in his one-sentence reply, said: “According to the Regulations for 1961, African Language papers, including those for Hausa, WERE NOT included for West African School Certificate.”

“This development may have further cast doubts on the certificate which is purported to be General Buhari’s.  He is yet to react to the assertion by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation that the document (the published certificate) was forged and illegally procured.” (Capitalizations mine)

Sodiq was shocked such falsehood was attributed to him by Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode and wanted to contact the Editor of THISDAY for such wicked misrepresentation. Sodiq Alabi (sodiqalabi@hotmail.com) had written an email to Cambridge Assessment, the brand name of University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicates, on January 22, 2015, 13.31 hours, to confirm whether Hausa was truly offered by it in 1961 examinations. By 4.10pm same day, Jacky Emerson (archives@cambridgeassessment.org.uk), Archive Services Delivery officer of Cambridge Assessment, replied thus: “Dear Sodiq Alabi, According to the Regulations of 1961, African Language papers, WERE SET for West Africa School Certificate.”

A screenshot of this email exchange was shared with us on Facebook by Sodiq and it went viral on the internet. The email triggered other Nigerians to send emails to Cambridge Assessment for independent confirmation and the school came out with a release on its website the next day. In the release titled, “Statement in response to Nigerian Presidential election enquiries”, the school stated, “The organisation also confirmed that according to the Regulations for 1961, African Language papers, including those for Hausa WERE SET for the West African School Certificate.” Here is the link to the Cambridge Assessment website where this confirmation was published: http://cambridgeassessment.org.uk/news/statement-in-response-to-nigerian-presidential-election-enquiries/.

It is however surprising that Femi Fani-Kayode went ahead to alter the content of Sodiq’s email in his press statement to, “According to the Regulations for 1961, African Language papers, including those for Hausa, WERE NOT included for West African School Certificate.”, and still quoted the email as the source.

It is very unfortunate that this is the man speaking for the President’s re-election campaign. How do we believe every other “fact” he has quoted has not
