Jonathan is a man from the blues in which nobody knows about. I believe his failures in the past should not be tied to his present, only and only if he does well to show he had improved from his past Failures. But if not, references will always be made to his oblique humble beginning and inductive reasonings will be drawn and conclusions made

The county has average positions in such areas as economy – 14, enterpreneurship & opportunity – 14,  education – 22, personal freedom – 26 and social capital – 22

However, in terms of governance (31), health (29) and safety & security (35) Nigeria is among the low-ranking countries in Africa.

As the 2015 general elections are coming, one thing becomes obvious. Either President Goodluck Jonathan, or General Muhammadu Buhari would have to work a lot to move Nigeria up.

The UK-based Legatum Institute published its 2014 research on prosperity indicators from across the globe. Last month it placed Nigeria as the 125th out of 142 countries surveyed. However, it had no focus on Africa.

The add-on by Legatum, released last week, focused on 38 countries of the African continent. The criteria for ranking countries are the GDP and eight sub-indices such as education, health, and personal freedom.

Nigeria gained the status of Africa’s biggest economy in the beginning of 2014 after rebasing of its GDP. In his acceptance speech after winning the PDP primaries President Jonathan said: “All across our nation, the positive gains of the Transformation Agenda are being progressively enjoyed by our people.” 

Thereby, the Federal Government emphasised on the improved standard of living in Nigeria, but does it reflect on its position in the international rankings? Let’s have a look at the top 10 below:

Nigeria is still far from the high-ranking countries on the continent (TOP-10). Having oil and mineral wealth does not equal being successful. In fact, Nigeria remains one of the harshest countries in the world to live in.

Since 2012 it dropped from 24th to 27th position in Africa. The global drop was even more drastic (minus 22 places in the world since 2011). Currently such countries as Benin, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Mali, Niger, Cameroon, Egypt, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Djibouti, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo Republic, Zimbabwe and Mauritania overtook Nigeria (11-26). They are considered to be a better place for living.

If things go on like this, Nigeria risks to drop from the group of middle-ranking states.

Following the expiration of the tenure of professor Godwin Oshodin, a new substantial vice chancellor for the instutition has being appointed and he is the person of professor Faraday Osasere Orumwense, a sixty yrs old lecturer from the faculty of engineering and department of mechanical engineering. A one time Rector, Edo State institute of management studies Usen and currently the Dean of faculty of Engineering. This will finally bring to an end the tossle for the number one position of the institution and this is the 2nd sucessive Bini person being in the helm of affairs in the university. His appointment is to commence with immediate effect from 1st of December 2014.

The Oba of Benin has done what many consider to be a rare thing to President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday during his visitation to the state for the South-south-east Zonal rally in Benin City



Vanguard reports that The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba Erediauwa, presented Red Egbeigbe, the highest Benin traditional attire to President Goodluck Jonathan today, Saturday 27th.

‘Red Egbeigbe’ is said to be the royal attire majorly worn by only Benin prince and princess on rare occasion like marriages.

This, Erediauwa deemed fit to give to Jonathan when he paid a courtesy call to the monarch in his palace in Benin City.

The traditional ruler while presenting the royal gift revealed that he often see the president in dark-coloured attire, hence the need to add the royal gift to his wardrobe collections.

Erediauwa however congratulated the president for getting his party’s endorsement for second term.

Earlier, the president had told the monarch that he was in Benin to attend the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South sensitization and unity rally.

President Jonathan who thanked the traditional ruler for the gift, promised to return to the palace when the campaign for his re-election begins.

Damaturu—A cross section of Damaturu residents yesterday, expressed joy over the recent victory of the Nigerian army over members of the Boko Haram sect in the North-East of the country.
They expressed their feelings in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Damaturu, the Yobe capital.
Alhaji Ali Musa, a resident of Damaturu, told NAN that “the rededication of the security agents in the fight against insurgency has given us psychological relief with a sense of security.”
He also expressed delight over the reported killing of the sect’s leader, Abubakar Shekau.
Alhaji Bukar Yawale, a trader in Damaturu, said: “we have faith and confidence in the bravery of Nigeria’s security forces and their capability to dislodge the leadership and supporters of the insurgents.
“Given the needed equipment and motivation, the military will have defeated them long ago.”
Hajiya Aisha Bukar, a widow and mother of six, said: “although many lives have been lost, we thank God and the military for the turn of events against the insurgents.”
A lecturer at the state university, who declined to mention his name, said Nigeria must save itself from avoidable embarrassments it suffered in the hands of the insurgents.
He hinged his argument on the record of the country’s military in regional and international operations.
A cleric, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, commended the security agencies and called on the public to always volunteer useful information that would assist in the fight against the insurgents.
He said: “People should be vigilant of suspected persons or movements in their communities as the military destroy insurgents’ cells.
“The security should also intensify surveillance on the highways as fleeing bandits may resort to robbing motorists and commuters on the way.”

Sen. Gyang Pwajok (PDP-Plateau) on Tuesday said the National Assembly would endorse the National Conference recommendation for the establishment of state police.
Pwajok told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos that “one major feat the conference achieved was its acceptance of the need for states to establish their own security outfits.
“This is in view of current threats and realities.
“Such recommendation is no doubt in tandem with what analysts have always suggested as the best way to tackle peculiar security challenges faced by various states’’.
Pwajok said that the approval of the proposal by delegates, cutting across regional divide, had shown a dramatic shift as regions which had initially opposed state police endorsed it.
“The general approval of state police showed a change in perception; it has dawned on many Nigerians that tackling grassroots crime cannot be effectively handled under a centralised policing system.
“For us on the Plateau, the state police formation holds a special place because of our hills and mountains.
“Attackers had always hit and run into hills, but if we have local people that know that terrain as the security men, they could be pursued.’’
He dismissed the argument that the state police could be abused by the governors.
The senator explained that there was nothing to be afraid of since the policy had been tried in other federal structures and found to be successful.
Pwajok observed that governors that initially opposed the move had local security outfits.
He pointed out that legalising state police could give such outfits the legal cover to protect the people while complementing the central police force.
The senator, however, urged the Federal Government to assist the states to provide such complementary efforts, noting that such assistance would be crucial to neutralise teething problems the new bodies might face.
