BOOK-KEEPING IN PERSONAL FINANCE EVER WONDERED WHERE ALL YOUR MONEY WENT AFTER YOU RECEIVED YOUR PAYMENT OF SALARY? THIS EXPERIENCE IS NOT LIMITED TO SALARY EARNERS. INDIVIDUALS ENGAGED IN PERSONAL BUSINESS ALSO EXPERIENCE THIS DILEMMA. This brings to mind an experience while growing up. My mum was tired of starting a new business, making good profit, but always having this problem of ‘unexplainable cash disappearance.’ At some point, she would jokingly say it seems some mysterious powers are stealing her profit. Have you had similar experiences? For anyone who is superstitious, such conclusion would sound reasonable. But it really is not. I challenge you to prove me wrong. We highlighted problem areas in budgeting including housing, food, automobiles, debts and insurance. Below is a list of five other budget busters and how you can deal with them. Recreation/entertainment While recreation and entertainment are vital, they should be put in the proper perspective. Do not use borrowed money for entertainment. The normal tendency is to escape problems, even if only for a short while – even if the problems later become more acute. Everyone, whether in debt or not, should seek to reduce entertainment expenses. About this period I registered for a business plan competition. I was not expecting much but I just tried. About 161,000 Nigerians altogether applied for the business plan competition. I was fortunate to be selected for the 3-day training. The fact is that my sales copy writing skills really came handy. You know why? It is because a business plan is actually a sales letter. And not just people who know about the vision, but people who see it as a cause they can lay down their life for. This is one big difference between a real leader and those who profess to be leaders. A leader is that man who runs with a vision in everything he does. He is committed to fulfilling his call as a leader. The challenge today is that not every man runs with a vision. Some set out with no destination in mind. They are of the opinion that life happens and could take one to anywhere, while others are of the “Que sera sera (Whatever will be, will be) mindset.” Read more..........http://valourdigest.com/the-man-who-runs-with-the-vision/ HOW TO BUILD RELATIONSHIP CHEMISTRY FOR EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP Relationships are pivotal to your success. You cannot succeed being a lone ranger. Even good leadership is based on relationships. People won’t follow you if they can’t trust you or even get along with you. The key to making your followers trust you is to develop a relationship with them. It is the responsibility of a leader to connect with the people he leads. That can only be done by developing a personal relationship chemistry that takes care of the needs whether physical, emotional, psychological, financial or spiritual, of each follower. The challenge is that some leaders do little or nothing to connect with the people they lead. That is one of the reasons they fail in leadership. A successful football coach, a respectable businessman and a man that is in charge of his home all have one thing in common. It is growing relationship chemistry with the people they lead. Here are six of them. 1. Be wary of building walls. “People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges.” Joseph F. Newton Men The ego wants to divide your world. It wants to create barriers, separation and loves to play the comparison game. I have attended seminars, conferences and workshops on work-life balance, but found out that most of them left out one key ingredient that helps to give a full understanding of it. First, you need to grasp the meaning of work-life balance. It does not imply you being idle or working less. But as the name connotes it means finding a way of maintain a balance between work and everyday life. My discovery in trying to maintain a work-life balance was broadened when I had several discussions with successful entrepreneurs who are fathers to children and husbands to wives. I was so curious to know how they were able to successfully strike a balance between their lifestyle and work. Here are a few secrets I discovered: 1. This is because we all have weaknesses. There is the tendency for you to react to your partner’s weaknesses through criticism. It’s therefore imperative to learn how to criticise constructively. While criticising, you have to be very careful. And you can only do this by checking your motive and making sure it is right. If you don’t, you might end up creating strife in your relationship. Destructive criticism is dangerous and could destroy a relationship. It could make the other partner feel inferior, shameful and humiliated. Even when you criticise someone, there is no guarantee the person being criticised will change except you criticise the right way. You might be tempted to remain at that point, not knowing what is out there for you. Too many people resist change, because change could be disruptive and challenging, so they choose to stay where they are. But they don’t know that to get outside their inner circle they need to actually start from their circle. This is the reason I’ve imbibed the quote of Pope Francis that says “This is important: to get to know people, listen, expand the circles of idea. The world is crisscrossed by roads that come closer together and move apart, but the important thing is that they lead towards the good.” The good news in expanding beyond your inner circle in leadership is that it leads towards the good. This is one reason you should seek to make a move. Read more……… http://valourdigest.com/expand-beyond-your-inner-circle/ |
13 MISTAKES THAT WILL TANK YOUR FIRST DATE Going on a first date can feel like walking a tightrope: You’re trying to impress her without coming on too strong—or worse, looking desperate. They get confused when they see their partners display certain behaviours towards them, behaviours which are indicators to what is to come. Here are tips that can help you tell if your relationship will last or not: 1. When your needs are not being met: One of the many signs to discern that your relationship is not working is if your needs are not being met. Though, it is not possible for you to completely meet up with the aspirations of your spouse, it is expected that you should be able to do certain things for each other. As a matter of fact, you and your partner are created to provide love and support for each other. George Washington Carver was a prominent African-American scientist and inventor born into slavery in Diamond, Missouri, around 1864. His name will continue to make history because of his great deeds. Carver is best known for the many uses he devised for the peanut. Despite his predicament and background, Carver went on to become one of the most prominent scientists and inventors of his time, as well as a teacher at the Tuskegee Institute. Carver devised over 100 products using one of these crops—the peanut—including dyes, plastics and gasoline. When asked in the parliament how he made such discovery, he made reference to the Holy Bible as his secret. He died in 1943. Great names are not predicated on background, riches or inheritance, but only on the basis of courage and leadership. Names are given to everyone by birth, but a name can only be remembered for great deeds and the level of responsibility accorded to it when pronounced. It is also a form of trustworthiness; the trait of being answerable to someone for something or being responsible for one’s conduct. This is usually not an easy thing in leadership owing to the fact that most people consciously and unconsciously run away from responsibilities because they come in the form of demanding tasks which requiretime, energy and sometimes your resources to make them work. This is the reason, finding and accepting responsibility makes the cost of leadership high. The fact remains that accepting responsibility is work. Owen D. Young was of the opinion that there is nothing magical about leadership, but there are certain penalties attached to it. A car is the biggest symbol of independence, even if you own your own house or have moved out of your parents into a rental. A car allows you the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever your budget for petrol allows you to. You get to go wherever you want in your own time; there is no timetable or ticket time to adhere to when it comes to your own car. You can set off as early or as late as you like, which makes the world really open up to you. The thing is, buying a new car is a challenge, never mind buying a first car! Where do you start? Who do you speak to so that you know you’re not getting ripped off? What cars do you even look at? Does the mileage mean anything? These are all questions that you will ask yourself as a first-time car buyer. It’s a minefield out there when it comes to buying cars and you really need to do your research before you decide to head out and brave the car forecourts. I love the practical application, unique perspective and depth of thought that characterise his books. I also enjoy how he uses real life stories to illustrate his message and drive home his point in all his works – at least the ones that I have read or listened to – including Talent is Never Enough. The main message of the book is that while talent often plays an indispensable role in facilitating success, true success is rarely a result of talent alone. Rather, it is a product of many other factors. Talent is Never Enough calls on readers to enhance and maximise their talents by making 13 major choices which will move them from being talented people to becoming “talent-plus” people. These myths are mostly propagated when friends discuss their views or exchange thoughts and ideas about certain career paths. Most people harbour myths and stereotypes about certain careers without even realising it, thus complicating the matter. In some cases, the effects are mild and can be easily dismissed. In extreme cases, these unproven beliefs could interfere with one’s ability to achieve one’s goals. To ensure that you don’t get derailed from your career path, you must learn to confirm your beliefs or expose your misconceptions for what they are. You can do this by expounding on the issues. Examine your options and uncover the facts about the career in question. If you don’t take decisive action as described, you may find yourself overlooking opportunities and the possibilities of being established in your preferred career. Barbra Streisand, an American actress, rightly said, “Myths are a waste of time. They prevent progression.” To avoid wasting your time and denying yourself of opportunities, here’s how you can successfully debunk career myths: Read more………… http://valourdigest.com/career-myths/ GODWIN BENSON: EVERY SITUATION HAS A SOLUTION From being at the rear of the class, Godwin Benson went on to become an egghead and a first class graduate of systems engineering. It takes a high threshold of guts, smarts and heart to press on when others quit. Some people get it. They understand that life isn’t a straight line and when they’re stuck in a rut, they’re gritty enough to weather the storm of uncertainty and let it pass until a new path reveals itself. I once had a coaching client who made a career leap from working as a financial advisor with a hefty paycheck, to entrepreneurship and stressing about when the next paycheck would come. Her entire career had been as a financial advisor. She wasn’t worried about financial stability or business development or how she’d support her family. But now she was an entrepreneur, and she was worried sick. Read more….. http://valourdigest.com/5-fears-that-even-high-achievers-have-to-face/ |

WAYS TO PREPARE BEFORE YOU SWITCH CAREERS FROM JOURNALISM TO MARKETING You may have read that journalism has been in its death throes for the last decade. That’s bad news for many, but it struck me as particularly horrific when I entered the workforce six years ago hoping to be a professional writer. I’ve worked as a staff writer and editor for both digital and print publications since then, all while the industry felt like it was coming apart at the seams. There were plenty of positives along the way—nothing feels better than interviewing artists you love or landing a magazine feature. But at every stop I’ve made, journalists tend to describe themselves as huddling in a foxhole. 4 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR BEST EMPLOYEES ENGAGED (AND AWAY FROM THE JOB BOARDS) Ever heard of giving your direct reports stretch assignments? You’d most likely give them to your employees who don’t feel challenged enough, or coast through every assignment, or ask for more work. The basic idea is that you add a project to their plate that’s a bit out of their comfort zone—forcing them to pick up new skills, flex their innovative muscles, and ultimately become stronger employees. But of course, sometimes there are no resources to create these kinds of assignments for your team. They all agreed on everything, and things went along swimmingly? This seems great in theory, but when everyone agrees with each other all the time, it might mean that great ideas are getting left on the table… or not even considered at all. In fact, The Harvard Business Review says diverse teams are smarter, and cites a McKinsey report that shows when teams are racially diverse, companies have a 35% higher average return, and when they are gender diverse, they have a 15% higher return. If done correctly, you will find that your staff are more productive and happier as a result. When your people know you trust them enough to delegate an important task, it boosts their motivation to get the job done. It is a sign of greatness when a leader has the ability to enable their employees to get things done. One research study showed that 53 percent of business owners believe that they can grow their business by more than 20 percent if they only delegate 10 percent of their workload to someone else. That’s huge. WOULD YOU HAVE HIRED STEVE JOBS? It’s easy in retrospect to say you would grab the leader who drove the creation of the iPhone, iPad and so many other things that built Apple into the most valuable company in the world. But would you have taken on this scruffy college drop-out who showed some interest in technology but looked like a hippie and smelled so bad that Atari had to assign him to the night shift to placate co-workers who complained he seldom showered or used a deodorant? The negatives went beyond a lack of obvious qualifications, body odor and dress. He had shown himself to be, says Walter Isaacson in his best-selling biography of Jobs, manipulative and arrogant, and “a dreadful manager” who was not a great engineer and didn’t know much about technology. HOW TO ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS ON LINKEDIN By now you know I’m a big proponent of making the most of your LinkedIn. I’ve written about easy ways to elevate your professional profile — even over your morning coffee, words to avoid, more words to avoid, how to tell your story and more. Today’s LinkedIn topic: How to ask for recommendations. The ideas is to have recruiters, would-be managers (or employees), clients and other important people in your professional life be able to read what others — colleagues, past bosses, mentors and more — say make you and your work special. HERE’S HOW TO BE PREPARED There’s a quick litmus-test conversation any early-stage VC will have with the founder, and it’s one that you should be as prepared for as your elevator pitch. It goes something like this: VC: “How much money are you raising?” Founder: “$8-10 million.” VC: “What’s your current burn rate?” Founder: “$250,000/month.” VC: “So at a constant rate of burn rate you’d be raising enough for 2.5 to 3 years. Working as an IT specialist at CERN laboratory in Switzerland he became intensely interested in finding a better way to store and retrieve scientific documents. So in November, 1989 he created the three protocols, HTTP, HTML and URL, that we still use to surf the web today. Far more than a technical guide, Weaving the Web tells Berners-Lee’s personal journey of discovery, bringing his hopes and frustrations to the story of how he brought into life one of the most central technologies of the modern world. It is a wonderfully readable, fun and informative book! Strong relationships lead to stronger teams, and stronger teams lead to a more productive and more successful company. But getting to know people isn’t just knowing their favorite TV show or the name of their spouse. That’s trivia. To effectively manage your team, you’ve got to be aware of and understand your team members’ personalities. There are tons of personality tests out there: Myers-Briggs, Big Five, DiSC, StrengthsFinder, etc. All of these seek to categorize people by their innate characteristics and provide a window into their strengths, tendencies, and behavior. While these tests aren’t always perfect, they can really help you understand how to better lead your team — no matter what personality types are on it. Your company needs to hire one great person–and that means communicating to your future employee in such a way that he or she will truly want to become part of your team. While this takes some effort, it’s worth it when you find the right hire. They’re in their forties and are getting started in web development, and they are worried that they’re too old. Too old to learn or too old to get a job. It’s funny I get this question because I felt too old to learn to code when I was 19 years old. It took me six years before I started to code. When I started, I was 25. Thinking logically, if I’m too old to learn when I was 19, I should be even more afraid when I was 25. But I wasn’t. I wasn’t afraid because I burned my bridges. I decided I don’t want to work in a bank and decided to learn to design and code. It was a do or die. I couldn’t worry because I had to learn enough to find a job within a year. These are not my words, but those of the three car dealers I met while trying to get my first car. If this line does not make you part with your cash, they try the next one, ‘the car was made specifically for the Nigerian road.’ I do not dispute their selling points because I have found both to be true in the last one year, though there are other matters I will like to raise about the car later. No doubt, the Toyota brand has established itself in the Nigerian market as the number one car brand for a number of reasons. The product in many ways supports the living standard of both the middle and upper-class Nigerians as it is easy to maintain and repair. The spare parts are almost ubiquitous, from side mirrors to the entire engine, unlike some other brands that take you on a journey of frustration to fix just the smallest parts. THE MINDSET YOUR COMPANY NEEDS TO GROW ORGANICALLY M&A is central to many companies’ growth strategies. But you can’t grow by acquisition alone. Companies with more organic growth generate higher shareholder returns than those relying on acquisitions alone. But organic growth remains elusive. It’s been easier to go from big to bigger through M&A than new to big through entrepreneurship. That failure is not due to a lack of trying. Companies dedicate vast amounts of time, money, and effort to organic growth. The problem is that many companies have the wrong “operating system” for organic growth. To provide a great experience for attendees, you generally want to focus on the topic the organizers have requested – the “greatest hits” that you’re known for. But you’ll run into trouble if you give the same speech verbatim every time: your material will resonate much better with some audiences than others, and some may have heard your remarks before and get bored with the exact repetition. So how can you strike the right balance and effectively deliver a similar talk to different audiences? As a professional speaker who delivers between 30-50 paid keynotes per year, here are three strategies I’ve discovered that can help you craft a successful talk that resonates with diverse attendees. We are now living in what Harvard Business Review calls, “The Gig Economy,” where you’re essentially working for yourself as a specialist or collaborator with multiple companies or multiple projects. To better understand the psychological effects of living abroad, we set out to examine whether and how international experiences can transform a person’s sense of self. Specifically, we focused on “self-concept clarity,” the extent to which someone’s understanding of himself or herself is “clearly and confidently defined, internally consistent, and temporally stable”. WHY MILLENNIAL MEN DON’T GO TO THERAPY About eight years ago, Eugene was in the midst of transferring colleges when he noticed how his mood sagged, seemingly at random times, triggered by the smallest things. He had spent the previous two years at a California State University “smoking, drinking and playing computer games” before realizing that he was treading water and wasting time. He felt envy toward friends who had a career path, but also contempt for other students who were either coasting or were just plain dumb. Eventually, Eugene dropped out of school, aiming to transfer to a more prestigious private university. But over the next few months, daily routines like pulling himself out of bed and getting dressed loomed over him with daunting effect. 17 THINGS EVERY COUPLE MUST DISCUSS BEFORE GETTING MARRIED I’ve been writing an advice column in some shape or form for close to fourteen years now, and I can say with confidence that at least 75% of the letters I receive from married people are about issues that could have been avoided if the couples had better communicated their expectations about married life before tying the knot. Letters in which a husband and wife have drastically different ideas on where they’d like to raise a family are, sadly, not uncommon. Giving up smoking makes you want to smoke–to celebrate, to relieve anxiety, to deal with the fact that–in reality–you need a smoke. It’s the same with drinking and recreational drug use. The more they become parts of your day, the more your life is literally centered around the smoke break, drinks after work, and pills when you don’t really need them. But we all make those excuses for why it would be better with them. Sex can be an incredibly vulnerable experience. For people who struggle with alcoholism, the desire to dull some of the more uncomfortable feelings associated with sex ― like fear, anxiety and insecurity ― can be even greater. But once you get sober and stop using alcohol as a crutch, you’re forced to feel everything a bit more deeply and clearly ― the good feelings and the bad. “Sex has become a much more conscious process [since I got sober],” Seamus Kirst, author of Shitfaced: Musings of a Former Drunk, told HuffPost. “Before, I would drink to build up the confidence to flirt with people, and then drink to get through having sex. Besides my one serious relationship, I would usually have sex when I was drunk, so I wasn’t really aware of what I actually enjoyed sexually, and often sex wasn’t even an especially pleasurable experience.” Read more......http://valourdigest.com/8-ways-sex-changes-when-youre-sober/ |
A new report is highlighting the risks of keyless car ignitions after more than two dozen people died from carbon monoxide poisoning after mistakenly leaving a vehicle running in their garage. Since 2006, at least 28 deaths and 45 injuries have been linked to keyless engines that do not automatically shut off after the driver exits the car, even if the driver leaves with the fob required to activate the engine, a review by The New York Times found. In each case, the driver was found to have inadvertently left the car running in a garage. Many keyless vehicles do not need the fob nearby to remain running. The error caused the attached homes to fill up with the exhaust’s toxic carbon monoxide gas, which is odorless and colorless. 7 REASONS YOU SHOULD JOIN A COMMUNITY OF PROFESSIONALS The short answer? It’ll keep you connected, informed and aware—whether you’re an entrepreneur or an ambitious professional. Inside, there were stories of various entrepreneurs who all became millionaires before their 40th birthdays. At that time, I was a classroom teacher at a public junior high school in Anaheim, California. Here are seven apps made just for Android devices that can help entrepreneurs run their businesses better. It seems as though virtually every “best apps” list is targeted exclusively toward iOS users, often leaving Android users out in the cold. The lack of attention paid by many business and entrepreneurial blogs and websites often only adds to the perception that the Android operating system lacks the sophistication to be taken seriously as a tool for small business owners. Over the course of 100 days, its government slaughtered one-tenth of the country’s population and displaced more than 2 million people, turning them into refugees with little hope for the future. But even before the genocide, Rwanda was a country in crisis; the ongoing civil war had destroyed its already fragile economy, severely impoverished its citizens, and made it impossible to attract external investment. Fast-forward to 2017, and this nation of 12 million people is undergoing a complete transformation. RISE OF THE NIGERIAN INSTAPRENEURS Five years ago, in a tiny dorm room in St. Catharines, Canada, Tosan Ideh and Tuoyo Dudu started the ITSK Heritage Brand, an exotic jewelry business. For them, Instagram offered the opportunity to reach their intended audience through appealing visuals of their products. In the beginning, it was difficult to monetise the business through Instagram. “A lot of my reach then was through marketing campaigns off Instagram. For example, I partnered with models and well-known people to make the brand look appealing and to gain an audience,” Tosan recalls. Instagram has changed a lot since then, becoming more business-friendly and creating tools that help gather an audience. Now, their sales can come from exploiting new features on the platform. The ancient Greeks believed that creativity was this divine attendant spirit that came to human beings from some distant and unknowable source, for distant and unknowable reasons. Within the confines of my cozy New York City apartment, I’m in a constant battle against clutter. At least once a quarter I get entirely fed up with the routine of storing, shifting and lifting to find whatever I need at the back of my closet. So naturally, Marie Kondo’s best-selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, piqued my interest. Unlike standard questions of practicality, frequency of use and sentimental value often used to assess what is and isn’t worth keeping, her KonMari Method distills the process of decluttering down to one central question: Does it spark joy? IT’S PERSONAL: THINK LIKE A NONPROFIT TO HELP YOUR BUSINESS GROW Corporate social responsibility (CSR) isn’t just for big businesses and nonprofits. Small businesses need to be value-driven and give back to the community too. Here’s why.
