Help Your Child Set & Respect Boundaries

Helping children to set their own boundaries and limits is one of the most important things you can do as a parent. Not only are you teaching your children how to think independently, you also teach them how to treat themselves as well others.

When I was doing some background for this post, I was surprised at how often articles popped up about setting boundaries with your adult children. A lot. Makes me wonder if those kids weren’t taught how to take other people’s boundaries into account.

When children have their own firm boundaries, they are more likely to succeed throughout their lives. If you’ve had difficulty setting these up in your home, take a look at these ten ways parents help children set boundaries and limits.

Family5 Things Every Daughter Needs To Hear From Her Dad by ValourDigest(op): 10:08am On Feb 12, 2019
5 Things Every Daughter Needs to Hear from Her Dad

Girls…They’re wired a little differently than boys. Okay, they’re wired way differently than boys. If you have both in your family like ours does, you know that at times they can be as different as night and day. And as a result, your daughter needs to be loved differently than your boys. She needs a rock to lean on. She needs to possess your confidence in her and your verbal and physical affection towards her. She is tender and more fragile. And one of the greatest ways she interprets your love is through your words.

While boys feel love when you spend time being rough and tough or playing outside together, girls often interpret that same kind of love in different ways, like when you speak kindly to them, or just simply listen to them. Your words have the opportunity to give your daughter the wings to fly or crush her before she ever has a chance to get off the ground. Because of this, here are 5 things that you need to tell your daughter regularly.

1. “You are beautiful inside and out.”

Reasons Your Married Sex Life Lacks Passion

When you got married, you probably didn’t imagine sex in marriage life would be like this. After all, you love each other. You are attracted to one another and have good chemistry. However, when you are intimate, there is something missing. Maybe it is a new development in your relationship. Perhaps it has always been that way and you hoped it would eventually change, but it hasn’t. Your married sex life is passionless.

Sex is not always going to be earth-shattering, particularly when a couple has been married for a long time. When it consistently lacks passion overtime is when it can become divisive. The frequency of its occurrence tends to become less and less. Filled with unsatisfied desires, some turn to unhealthy things such as porn or an affair in an attempt to quench their thirst. In order to find the solution, it is important to identify the problem. If your married sex life lacks passion, it could be because of one of these 7 reasons.

Career6 Proven Ways To Increase Your Creativity by ValourDigest(op): 4:02pm On Feb 08, 2019
6 Proven Ways To Increase Your Creativity

Creativity is a trait many consider to be unlearnable—they believe it arises out of innate talent or a similarly abstract aptitude. But what if I told you that there were things you could do to foster your creative side?

As it turns out, creativity is more akin to a learned skill than an innate quality. If we consider creativity to be the ability to extend ideas given a basic premise, this sort of extrapolation should be dependent on observing patterns and thus be trainable.

An article in Business News Daily breaks this concept down: “At the core is the ability to look at problems from different angles, to connect and combine concepts, and the ability to challenge traditional assumptions. These are skills that require practice to master.”

If you’re unhappy and you know it — but you’re not sure whether you need a new job or a new career path — then read on to find out what the wrong career looks like, and what you can do if you realize you need to make a change.

20 Things Wives Hate Hearing Their Husbands Say

My friend and his new wife had just finished their first dinner in their new home. She spent a good amount of time preparing the meal so it was perfect. After dinner he went and sat in front of the TV. Then he said it: “My mom would have had everything cleaned up by now.” As you can imagine he immediately had an angry wife. The vase just barely missed his head, shattering on the wall behind him. I asked him if the vase was a warning shot or if she actually meant to hit him. “Oh, she definitely meant to hit me,” he said. Over twenty years later they are more than happily married. One of the reasons for their happy marriage is he stopped saying things like that.

There are things a husband says that leads straight to an angry wife. While some depend on the context, others just need to leave our vocabulary altogether. If you want to be happily married, most of it is going to depend on how you communicate. It’s not always about saying the right things, sometimes it’s about not saying the wrong things. Here are 20 things wives hate hearing their husbands say.

FamilyFive Things Husbands Hide From Their Wives That They Shouldn’t by ValourDigest(op): 3:42pm On Jan 29, 2019
Five Things Husbands Hide from Their Wives that They Shouldn’t

For several years I was a financial advisor. One of my favorite parts of the job was getting to know people. Sitting around a kitchen table I would hear all about my client’s past successes and failures, future hopes and dreams, and current circumstances and struggles. When I was able to meet with both husband and wife tons of progress was made in both of them meeting their goals. However, in most situations, I would meet with only one, and usually, the other spouse didn’t even know about the meeting. More often than I can remember they would tell me, “My spouse doesn’t know about this account and I want to keep it that way.” When I asked why I always received the same answer, “I don’t trust (him) or (her).” Hiding things in a relationship, especially a marriage is never wise.

Without trust, marriages don’t work. They completely break down. Trust is the central ingredient to a having a healthy marriage. Rather than hide things from each other, married couples need to work out their differences. This can be painful, but the alternative will lead to a shallow marriage at best, while at worst it can have dire consequences. If you are hiding things from your wife it’s time to share and confront the problem.

With a new year upon us, our resolutions are filled with hope and promise (not yet worn thin by time, reality and old habits). Thus, the question of how to deal with a ‘difficult’ friend comes to the fore, right at the top list of those unsettling issues to address. In the midst of the holiday rush, there wasn’t time or inclination to consider what to do about such friends — although many of us were well aware of their presence all along. HealthFitness Tips For Lazy People by ValourDigest(op): 4:00pm On Jan 24, 2019
Fitness Tips for Lazy People

Sometimes you need to push yourself to exercise and be fit. Making movement essential to cope with your entire day means you’ve got no choice but to workout. While shopping or doing some errands, park your car away from your destination than usual. When in a building with an elevator or escalator, opt for the stairs rather. Utilizing the stairs is definitely an instant fitness boost. If doing errands in your area, ride a bike or just take a walk to your destination. Walking if you want to go someplace means you get exercise, but you won’t have to designate certain time for you to exercise. Essentially, you use exercise as a way to an end.

A terrific way to push yourself to workout is to make a situation by which something or someone is counting on your daily fitness regimen. Getting a pet is a terrific way of getting to move. Even the most sluggish person won’t ignore a woofing dog that requires time outdoors. A pet makes a scenario that you don’t have any choice but just to walk outdoors. If you’re thinking about the reasons why you don’t have the energy or time to workout, a pet will help you get going and achieve your workout goals.

Career10 Steps To Setting And Achieving Goals At Work by ValourDigest(op): 1:54pm On Jan 23, 2019
10 Steps to Setting and Achieving Goals at Work

Make goal-setting an ongoing practice.

Setting goals at work is an interesting balancing act. On the one hand, your workplace goals must support the company mission. On the other hand, they must be your own. Otherwise, goal-setting is just a rote, check-the-box exercise.

An additional complication is that certain companies (and managers) are better at helping their employees set and achieve work goals than others. The good news is that even if you work for someone who approaches the annual goal-setting session as a necessary evil, there are things you can do to get some value out of it. If your manager genuinely understands the power of goal alignment and setting and achieving goals, you have a great opportunity to use the conversation as a starting point for career growth.

How to Respond to the Silent Treatment from Your Spouse

The Silent Treatment. I’m guessing that every spouse has given or gotten it at least once. It communicates a ton without saying a word, conveying things like anger, frustration, bitterness, manipulation, resignation, disappointment, and sorrow. But a long bout of the silent treatment can hurt a marriage and causes loneliness. The habitually silent spouse isolates the other, who becomes the lonely spouse. If you’re the lonely spouse, suffering in silence, there is hope. Here are some things to understand and to do to encourage communication again.
1. Don’t assume you know the reason for the silent treatment.

The causes can be complex and varied. Assuming you can simply figure out what’s going on in your spouse’s head and heart can be counterproductive. If your spouse hasn’t explained the silence, your assumptions can cause defensiveness, anger, and extended silence if you’re seen as oversimplifying or arrogant

The words “public speaking” cause fear and anxiety in the minds of otherwise competent and confident people. Does the thought of speaking in front of a group evoke fear, make you sweat, and get your heart pounding? It’s likely you have glossophobia – the fear of public speaking.

Glossophobia is one of the most common of fears. There are many ways to increase business exposure so why bother to overcome your speaking jitters? Stepping up to the podium not only positions you as an expert in your area of business but it also provides effortless referrals and improved sales opportunities.

Starting a Business in Your 40s Makes More Sense Than You Think

You might see them featured on the covers of business magazines or in cutting-edge blogs. They might drive cooler cars or own larger businesses, and they might be 20 years younger than you. So what?

If you’re in your 40s, there’s no better time to follow your entrepreneurial dreams. Just because you were born in a different decade doesn’t mean you’re ready to be put out to pasture. Look at Harland Sanders, for example. He held various jobs throughout his life, but in 1955, at the age of 65, he decided to start developing his franchise restaurant: Kentucky Fried Chicken. To date, KFC has stores in more than 100 countries.

And Sanders isn’t the only middle-aged entrepreneur. The Kauffman Foundation surveyed nearly 700 U.S.-born CEOs and heads of product development in engineering tech companies. Interestingly enough, twice as many U.S.-born tech entrepreneurs start ventures in their 50s as they do in their early 20s. Here are four reasons why you should consider starting a business in your 40s:

7 Things a Daughter Needs from Her Father

When my daughter was younger and feeling down or insecure she would crawl into my lap. Then she would nestle her head in my chest. I would wrap my arms around her. Then I would tell her I loved her and she would always let out a deep relaxing exhale. It’s as if all those things that were weighing on her left her shoulders. It still happens, but now that she has gotten bigger she more cuddles up next to me, but when I tell her I love her she still lets out the same calming breath.

8 Powerful Methods People Use To Bounce Back From Failure

No one is perfect. We all fail at something at some point in time. But the world’s most resilient people aren’t afraid of failure. They aren’t afraid of setbacks and defeats. They don’t shy away from the pain. They embrace it. They use it to fuel them, to enhance their frame-of-mind, to embolden their pursuits and emblazon their spirits.

The truth? Success cannot be achieved without failure. As much as our society frowns upon failure and as much as it might feel like the embracement of defeatism, failure is a necessary evil. It’s not about failure. Whether you’ve failed once, dozens of times or hundreds and thousands of times, you’re defined not by the number of times you failed, but how you looked at those failures and bounced back from them.

Yet, for most people, failure is the final blow. It’s the proverbial nail in the coffin. They take a single solitary failure and they allow that to emotionally ruin and debilitate them. They allow their lives to be defined by that failure, cowering into a corner, hiding in the aftermath of despair, succumbing to the suffocation of defeat.

Top 5 Barriers Single Fathers Face and How to Overcome Them

They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger—but that’s only if we’re able to apply the right tools to the challenges we face and learn how to overcome them. I have faced all of the examples listed below. Some I have pushed through with relative ease; others are still a work in progress. We all experience challenges in life; but here are five barriers that can especially apply to single fathers—and guidance to help conquer them.
1. Single parenting isn’t natural

I believe parenting was created as a two-person system; and when one parent is removed from the equation, for whatever reason, the full burden falls on the other. You may be caring for your kids completely alone, or perhaps with shared custody.

6 Depression Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Everyone feels a little down in the dumps now and then. But sadness and withdrawal can become crippling, putting you at risk for a number of serious conditions and consequences, including suicide.

Depression symptoms aren’t always as obvious as frequent crying and overwhelming despair. “Oftentimes the changes are subtle, and the person may not notice, but their friends and loved ones may,” says Boadie W. Dunlop, MD, director of the mood and anxiety disorders program in the psychiatry department at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.

There’s no one pattern. Depression symptoms may gradually progress from the mild, such as choosing to stay home to watch TV instead of going out with friends, to the more severe, such as thoughts of suicide. Or someone may go from seeming perfectly happy to being totally depressed in a matter of days or weeks. The progression varies from person to person.

4 Proven Ways to Bounce Back From Failure

It is impossible to get through life without experiencing a setback, large or small; inevitably, every one of us will wake up feeling like a total bust. Failures come in all sizes and shapes—from losing a tennis game, to getting passed over for a promotion, to losing someone very important to your life—and the truth is that the ability to weather the emotional storms isn’t meted out equally. Some of us are better at picking ourselves up, dusting ourselves off, and, yes, starting all over again.

While we may like to think of recovering from failure as an inborn character trait, it’s really about how well (or badly) you’re able to manage the negative emotions that accompany failure. Some of this is learned behavior but some has to do with personality.

Psychologists distinguish between individuals who are approach-oriented and those who are largely motivated by avoidance. Read the following descriptions and decide which group you fall into, or whether you’re somewhere in between:

5 Reasons Every Nigerian Student Should Join LinkedIn

LinkedIn is one of the most popular social networks in the world. Many Nigerians think LinkedIn is only for professionals which is actually wrong. Fine, it is for professionals but any young and ambitious student who is looking to network and reach out to persons in their industry should belong to this professional network. So, why should students use LinkedIn? We gather five reasons.

Allow people to know who you are

Since you are not yet out of school, it may be difficult for you to meet people in your desired career path. LinkedIn gives you unhindered access. You simply create a profile and add people who are related to your career path or what you are studying. They can even hire you after graduation.

How Anxiety Reduces Empathy

One afternoon in Dublin, I found myself running through the airport, convinced I was about to miss a flight for the first time in my life.

My anxiety surged at the sight of a long security line, but luckily an airport official ushered me to the front. I didn’t care how the waiting passengers felt about my preferential treatment, and I don’t remember much about the people I encountered during that nerve-wracking afternoon. I was thinking only about my goal: to get home.

In short, my empathy for others plummeted as my anxiety mounted—and a recent paper helps explain this phenomenon by linking anxiety to egocentrism. In doing so, it provides yet another reason why cultivating empathy is so crucial.

How to Really Take Care of Yourself This Holiday Season

Easy ways to plan for a healthier and happier celebration

Another holiday season is upon us. And along with gifts and nonstop seasonal soundtracks, it can also bring stress, disappointment, emotional eating, and overindulgence. Between event planning, shopping, cooking, managing relatives, and trying to complete the 300 other tasks “necessary” for a good holiday, it’s no wonder many people lose sight of what keeps them physically healthy and mentally grounded throughout the rest of the year. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With just a little thought and planning, you can survive – and even thrive – during this holiday season.

Keep exercise essential. Physical activity is the number one thing I recommend to everyone I work with because it reduces stress, improves mood and concentration, and combats depression. When it comes to improving how you feel, getting regular exercise can be as effective as taking antidepressants. Decades of research shows that even just ten minutes of challenging exercise daily triggers the same hormones in your brain (serotonin and dopamine) targeted by anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications. Regular exercise builds up levels of these important mood regulators, becoming a buffer for stress, anxiety, and depression.

5 Things You Need to Stop Telling Yourself if You Want to Improve Your Mental Health

Your brain is an editor. One of its tasks is to choose how to narrate the story of what happens to you every day. It determines how every conversation and calamity fit in with your own life saga. How your brain interprets that fight with your partner or that failed job interview ultimately determines whether these events will cause negative emotions and self-defeating thoughts.

When you feel anxious or stressed out, your editorial brain is tempted to cut corners for self-preservation. One such shortcut is the “must” filter. Musts are beliefs that we have about how the world should work and how we should behave in it. They are nice little boxes into which your brain tries to cram every event, but the reality is that these “musts” tend to not be accurate or rational. They ignore the complexities of the human experience for black and white truths. Here are a few common “musts” to watch out for when you start to worry. How to Dramatically Improve your Public Speaking Skills

The ability to communicate a message, sell an idea, or paint a vision is a critical skill for anyone who wants to have an impact on the world. And even in the age of emojis, animated GIFs, and Snapchat filters, public speaking is still the most effective way to move, persuade, and inspire.

It’s why people pay a premium to attend conferences and see experts and leaders speak live, and why Americans took 460 million business trips in 2017 to communicate in person.

How to get a busy person to respond to your email

Some days I get hundreds of emails a day. It really sucks.

The worst part is that most of the emails are important and I physically can’t respond to all of them.

They might be emails from students of One Month who are frustrated — I want to help them out. Other times they’re from people who have read my posts and want to meet up. Or they’re just from friends.

My personal policy is to read every single email I get. That means every day I have to set aside at least an hour to go through all my email and decide what urgently needs to be responded to and what doesn’t.

16 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR CAR LOOK COOLER

Unfortunately not all of us can afford to buy hot looking cars right out of the box, or all of the massive custom upgrades that will make our rides turn the heads of every one we drive past, however that doesn’t mean you need to drive around in a POS. With a little pride, elbow grease, and a few dollars in savings here and there, today we’re sharing with you the top 16 easiest and affordable ways to make your car look much cooler.

1. Get your car professionally washed and detailed both inside and out.

This may seem really obvious, but we’re still going to say it. Nothing makes your car look cheaper than a two dollar hooker if it’s filthy on the inside and out. Grime, dirt, crumbs, upholstery stains, dust all detract from your car’s curb appeal and value. That collection of fast food bags or water bottles isn’t impressing anyone either. The first step to making your car look amazing is to make sure it’s impeccably clean. The ugliest cars can look great after a good wash, and the nicest cars can look terrible if they are covered under a layer of filth. And not just a run through your local car wash and vacuum place… we’re talking a full scale detail from top to bottom.
