The only solution for now before the govt does something is urban agriculture. Lots of space wasting in the city can be used.

When it comes to cost, there's a DIY or second hand way. Which is always cheaper.

Hi all,

Was invited today to see the first jute sack backyard farm. Rama in Hausa and I think Ewedu in Yoruba. He grows them for his own use cos he's a food processor (mostly herbs though). Also saw a giant African spinach plant. See the comparison.

good pm sir, I got your pin but I'm not on bbm and I have been so busy with research and others pertaining to cucumber sack farming. I am 70 percent ready but will kick start if you can kindly enlighten me more on this questions I want to throw to the house.
1. is hand pollination compulsory, if it is, when can I do it and how do I do it
2. is it compulsory I first plant in a nursery before I tra sfer to the sack to avoid predators
3. when do I start spraying with pesticide and at wat interval should I spray the plants.
4. is it compulsory I treat the soil before planting and how do I treat is
5. I read it somewhere that adding ash is OK to the soil, so what is the usefulness of the ash and how important is it
6. how do I prevent nematode
7. can I use rice sack in place of cement sack cos I'm really finding it had to get it here
.

pardon me for my numerous questions, I will drop my day to day activities in the house with pictorial evidence. thanks and God bless
1. Hand pollination isn't necessary (Bees & Co. will do that for you) except your plants are in a net or greenhouse.

2. No it's not compulsory. Pests or predators will always come.

3. Usually when you start seeing pests but I start spraying after the third leave emerges. 5 days to a week interval. Then I stop temporarily when they start flowering. @organicfoods will recommend neem oil. Contact him for organic pesticides.

4. Don't know what kind of soil you wanna use but the locals here treat soil by burning dry grass on it before tilling and planting.

5. The locals say the ash is fertilizer. I leave you to Google. He'll answer the rest.

6. Burning may prevent them but if they survive, drowning them is an option.

7. Yes you can. Be like say you wan plant 20 per sack cheesy

I admired your courage and research work bro, but are you saying 10k is enough to plant cucumber and if so, what's d the Return on investment provided full luck is on sm1 side?
What's in the thread is my own personal experience. My advice to those who came to the farm is that try to keep your production cost low (Be a cheapskate). I sourced a lot of things free.

Even if you buy everything, your money will come back but the North is cheaper than the South (opinion). There's no such thing as luck. It's written and also, hard work always pays (believe it or not). Regarding return on investment, I think the thread says it all.

but the sack should be perforated right? I mean to avoid water logging
One or two holes is enough. I perforated some and I left some. Had no problems cos the water sieves out from the sack.

Haven't tried it in the raining season though.

@vanpeele
The cement bags I have has been cut into two, can i use it?
How often do I need to wet the cucumber after planting it in the sack?
Hmm...yes you can but I doubt if it'll last long. Next time, fold the sacks inwards. Everyday. The goal is to keep the soil moist (not waterlogged).
AgricultureRe: My Successful Cucumber Sack Farm In Kaduna by vanpeele(op): 9:56pm On Mar 24, 2016
resilent:
@vanpeele Is it half of the regular cement bag you use?
Regular...I just fold it inwards. That way it lasts longer.

one sack huh..hmm but how will one sack encourage me ?? i know u know wat i mean
I started with one. If one doesn't encourage you, 10000 won't. If you can't manage one or two or three, you can't manage 10.

I think you know what I mean.

If you go through the thread, you'll see that you need little or no money to start. So no need for partnerships. If you truly have a passion for agric...then you can start with a least one sack then gradually build up the numbers.

Hi everyone, sorry for the hiatus. The Fulani (agwai) problem I'm facing is a never ending one. If it continues on the current trajectory one or both parties will get seriously hurt.

So I've decided to relocate to the city but currently searching for a fenced one or two plot land (preferably with well, tap or borehole) to scale. Security is a major issue in this country. Everyone does as they please, especially the cowboys. Two folks were kidnapped just last week close to our farm. Them don open new office since cattle rustling no dey pay well.

If you're facing the same problem wherever you're and you or your family member no dey wear khaki or related to Buratai, please stay safe cos them folks are crazy. #peace #staysafe and #SackFarm
