Hello once again. Harvested 4 and a half bags yesterday from the grounders. That's 3 days after the first harvest (murano power). Anyways this thread is about sackers. I've decided to plant something else but the seeds are scarce. I'll let you guys know about it if I eventually get the seeds.
I was told that someone in Jos has started sack farming (exactly like mine) and it was shown on NTA. Even the commissioner of agric in Jos was excited about it (as I was told). If it's true, please he/she should share to encourage others. Thanks |

ishaqteejay: thats ryt, you see i didnt puch mine and water drains fine.but i dont no whether it should be in the case of raining season. I'm thinking that if it's on concrete or any hard surface it won't be a problem but it's still a learning process. |

Finally...my sack cukes are gone...want to reboot with another crop..but harvested 3 bags from the grounders....oh and a conjoined twin...
Sack Farming is a very affordable and lucrative business. Even if you don't like dirt or farming itself, just call it gardening (for your mind). Sounds more posh

Cossycute: like how many matured cucmber do you harvest from each sack of four plants?God bless ur effort My advice will be to always use worst case scenario. 2 per sack (it's more than that) will be a good way to calculate. Depending on the variety, between 100-200 cucumbers fill a bag. The bigger they're the less you need and the smaller they're, the more you need. |

On Wednesday, I harvested 4 bags and sent them to ABJ (Deidei) @ 400 naira each. Two were sold at 3k yesterday and the others were sold at 2500....totaling 11k. So I made 9k4.
In total I've made 15 bags. Even if they all sold for 1k each, I'll still breakeven with change. I hope this will encourage some of y'all to try this sort of farming or gardening even if it's just a sack.
You can save money having your own sack garden. Wouldn't mind if numerous sack farms are across the country...make one big #SackTeam community.

No harvests yet but someone suggested I upload our sweet and Irish potato experiment. So far so good. They were planted in December. I can't recall the exact date. We planted both varieties in one sack. The sweet has overshadowed the Irish.

Didn't harvest today because I had some pressing issues like pesticide application.
I planted 2 batches of Cucumber, on the 9th and 23rd of January. It's not as lush as those in the sack but they look good. We still manual irrigate them.
There are only two sack farmers currently in northern Nigeria. Yours truly and ishaqteejay. Took some pics of his farm. Do enjoy the show.

lagbaja: @vanpeele, I am so proud of what you are doing. Keep it up. Here are a few additional innovations I will suggest to make the results even better.
1. Nursery the seeds in a seed tray for 2 weeks before transplanting to the bags. This will address the issue of attacks on the first emerging leafs by small animals. It will also reduce initial attacks by white flies.
2. Make irrigation out of perforated PVC pipes ( Do it yourself using half inch pipes) The PVC pipes will be perforated at the points where the bags are positioned.
3. Do hand pollinatin. Pluck the male flowers, remove the petals, use the remaining anther to touch the female flowers. You can also do this with a soft toothbrush or artist brush. Thank you very much. Number 1 I'll definitely try, Number 2 I'll definitely do when I scale and Number 3 I already do. |
