marvel10: Of course it can get better. You weren't specific in what areas you are wishing it to get better. It has gotten better in the Telecoms sector and there are numerous small to medium sized companies that do well despite the crippling infrastructure.Yes telecoms is better, that is what i call something little to make people calm. For knowledge on what is possible with all the oil money, i say again, go to UAE, Kuwait, see what's possible. However note this, Many foreigners live in Lagos. Have you ever seen where Foreigners stay in Nigeria and that region was underdeveloped. think about it. They also need comfort here. Generators, shoprites, good hospitals etc. Or don't you know if most of the white people lived in kebbi state, there will be huge improvements there. Think of ikoyi, V.I., where they live, have they ever being bad areas? Abuja, Port Harcourt. Hell, when they were even building rail networks in the old republic, they built only to cities where they can get their goods, and have them transported to lagos for shipment abroad. the rest of the country wasn't invested in. enough said here. You say the Fashola type, yes good point. Fashola fights so many battles just for the changes he is getting. He is also lucky that lagos is a highly educated region. However lagos is not nigeria. In many other parts of the country, nothing like that is going on. the people don't know their rights and nothing is being done. If a very educated man goes to that region and tries to change it, once he is not from that. Due to cultural differences, only a man from a region can govern it. fashola can't go to the north or east and try to change it. Their leaders won't bother to change it, and importantly the people won't complain. The west is a bit different in culture. People in the west don't respect money that much. So a man who steals is looked down upon. Not so in other parts, people are happy if a ruler provides them food daily. These are all cultural differences. |
khukhi: One thing I've learned is that Nigerians don't like to be told what to do!1st line in bold. Having many graduates is not the issue. Having opportunities to make something of their life is what's needed. Having infrastructure, having a health care plan, having a pension plan. having an industry that actually produces something, - serious something, at least one thing, or where do you want those graduates to work, earn money, become strong men in the community, further their knowledge, change their country? Not one where you fear for your life, every weekend, you need to go for a revival camp as you fear next month might be your last/ relieve the amount of stress - don't forget, relaxation spots are few and priced too high.... i think that's enough 2nd line in bold. That is what i call a la la la line. Something told and retold , until people believe that change is easily achievable. OK, you know what, i will pretend what you say is correct. So teenager A believes he can become a big man one, day, goes to school, studies hard, gets a good job, rises little by little. The police/armed robbers/cultists/ bad roads/ fake drugs fail to get him. He becomes a very successful businessman. He joins politics. He has good intentions of educating his people and providing for them. Finally after a long campaign he gets into the presidential office. He is shocked to see how corrupt the whole thing is - how everyone is stealing/looting the country dry. He is approached by some of the men who have been in politics for a long time. They tell him, he has to follow so and so policies, to continue the looting. He himself will be made rich beyond his dreams. he thinks about joining the looters says no, begins fighting them, changing policies here and there, forcing everyone to work in a straight line. Yes he is doing a good job. What do you think western democracies are thinking? Do you think they want the economy working? I mean, if we can refine our own oil/produce a lot of food and goods, are we going to buy from them? what will happen to their economy? who will they sell their goods to? the next thing that will happen is suddenly there will be a coup d'etat or that man will be killed. Think my story is fantasy? Just research nigeria's past leaders, and why some of them were bumped out of government. And when you are done. go to Venezuela research too. Hint: they also have oil, and leaders who wanted to change the country |
gree-die:get better, how? i like your optimism, but if anyone on this thread believes nigeria can get better, please tell me how exactly, with firm points to buttress you beliefs. In fact i challenge anyone to come up with an idea of how nigeria can get better. I am 100% sure i will give you many reasons to show you are wrong. Be very logical, don't just come here and post, i belive, i belive bla bla bla nonsense. Give me logical well thought out reasons. I know i will point out your errors. I didn't wake up and write this thread. I have observed nigeria personally, gone to different regions, talked to political analysts and professors. I made the thread so i can get reactions and maybe enlighten people on the true plight of our country. Maybe (and i say this as a very very long-shot) something can happen. But logical reasoning, clear vision, science will tell you not. Please don't bring religion into it, because if you remember the saying - they came with the bible, we had the land. they asked us to close our eyes and pray, we opened them, and we had the bible, they had the land. Think very well before you repeat the indoctrinated lines. Wise up!!! |
iiiyyyk: you dont realy know how bad nigeria is untill you leave the shores of nigeria to one of this developed countries.you got my point. this is what i am saying. when you see what it means when the words country, government, welfare... are used. You know nothing like that is here in nigeria, far from it. Seriously nigerians are complaining, but they are not complaining enough. Many don't even realise what they are missing. Some think a house in lekki, bmw, suya, tinapa is good life. Believe me, that's nothing to what you should be getting. Do you know the meaning of the word security Walk on the street, someone won't just start shooting? You see a policeman, you know no matter the time of the night, he wouldn't suddenly change behaviour to that of an armed robber? You park a car, you feel nothing can happen? You drive for 6 months, yet you see only one accident?Oooooooo, our journey is too long. ![]() |
torkaka: no offense but my guy, if you want to step into the 21st century and your better half is pulling you towards the 17th century how do you hope to move forward? how do you move forward when some sees the damming effect of polio but yet refuses vaccination in the name of religion? how do you move forward when people have now decided western education is bad? how do you move forward when the best for the job takes a back sit while the one qouta favours takes the front sit? how do you move forward when street begging is considered the right thing? how do you move forward when some one has no regard for another who farms on he's property cause he prefers to destroy it in the name of grazing? how do you move forward when your neighbour from birth is taught to consider you an infidel?man, you have good points. to be honest i agree with you. But in the spirit of nigeria, let's close our eyes to that side. We have bad leaders, that includes bad leaders in the south and the north. All have contributed to this mess. Sort out the leaders, and maybe, just maybe, we might see some progress. Good leaders in the north will eradicate those problems listed above, same as good leaders will eradicate problems in the south. |
GboyegaD:seconded. if we go that way, the thread will descend to people insulting one othertorkaka:An example of why we can never get better because we see ourselves as better than some other group which tells the extent of disunity we share. |

Weda u lyk it or nt, AM GONNA MAKE IT IN NIGERIA. Long live naija. Gud pple gr8 nation.look man, have you head the saying, don't put the cart before the horse well, if you understand it, then you know that, you don't blame nigerians for misbehaviors if the leaders are not better. Let the leaders be in good light, and the people will followOn you second point, i hate bringing religion into topics, but i think you should go to google and research these topics: 1. religion and politics 2. religion and government 3. the role of religion in controlling the masses (especially the poor ones) Last, i agree, good people in nigeria, but definitely not a great nation. Don't believe all the horsecrack so called "community leaders" tell you. If nigeria is so great, why do hey send their children abroad, or go there to retire? |
NRI PRIEST: All you need to do in order to find out if Nigeria will get better is just to peruse throught the comments made by the supposed "educated" Nigerians on Nairaland and thats all you need; Bunch of hateful and tribalistic bums! They claimed they are educated but most of them have not the common sense nor wisdom to make a constructive and sensible arguements! Nigeria is a wicked Nation!you are very right. i have also noticed tribalistic comments on nairaland. it is disturbing really. maybe one day we can put aside these differences and talk sensibly |
chrishenzo: You are right. Nigeria can only get better if the country divide. The problem of Nigeria is tribalism and religion. What makes you think that a country will develop when people vote for specific man or woman because the person is from his/her own ethnic group or religion. A country where an hausa man or Igbo man will talk and a yoruba will disagree because he is not a yoruba or an Igbo or hausa man insulting a yoruba because he doesn't belong to their group. The truth is that our government knows the really problem of this country but none seem to care. I am yet to see a patriotic president in Nigeria(both past and present). What makes you think that a country will develop when the same people that are in power since 90s are still the same people holding power today and the worst is that most has run out of idea. What makes you think that a country will develop when some constitution favours some people and not all the power.my man! well said! |
saddler: Nigeria cant get better until we take å look at d rate our population is increasing and d no of fools and nonentities are increasing arithmetically. funny haha |
Sirmuell: With the way things are going, Nigeria can and will never get better! Nigeria will only get better if the country divides into two or three separate entities(countries) that's the first step towards progress but if we keep managing in ignorance then development will forever be a fairy tale to Nigeria! Years to come you will come to see that the division of Nigeria is inevitable.you have a good point there. Nigeria is made of too many people who are not similar in any way. I am not promoting tribalism, just saying often, peole quarrel when they don't understand each other. Just as you wouldn't marry someone you don't get along, nigeria has been forced into a marriage of too many different cultures and people who are not alike, don't have the same views, and the result is constant fighting. I don't blame nigerians, but the colonialists who merged everyone together. To buttress my point, just look at the situation in Mali, one part of the country fighting the other saying they want to liberate thier people..... signs of not having one voice. |
@ gbawe you say nigeria can get better, but think for a minute, have we really been getting better all these years or worse. forget democracy and some few projects here and there. think of the value of the naira to pounds, from 1 - 1 to 1 - 250. think of our refineries, from some average production to none. think of our industries, from some budding industries to none, think of imports, exports - when a country imports virtually all its foods, you know that's a problem. What do we create/make here. We just sell oil, money which we wouldn't see, but will be spent abroad by the executives, again, note, bolstering the developed countries' economies. I mean, all our oil money, what do we have to show for it. if you think some few roads here and there, see some shoprites and think, oh that governor is doing a good job, yes, we are getting progress, i will tell you one thing - Go to Dubai and see what oil money is really all about. One thing i was taught in politics was this. If you want to use people, use them thoroughly, but not to the point of rebellion, then from time to time give them goodies to keep quiet. That's what is happening to us. I will add, not our fault though, we don't even know what we should be getting in the first place. @ soskid you are very right. Nowadays slavery has just been substituted for the word "globalization". If it isn't carting away our best brains (more doctors from angola in the uk than in angola itself), it's by giving our people visas to come wash their toilets and sweep their streets. Jobs their people refuse to do. @ fhemmmy Nigerians have not the problem. If i gave you a choice to have a successful career, and wonderful family, won't you take it? Now what about if you don't have that opportunity in the first place. That's the point i am making.... |
for nigerians to get better, we need education, for education, we need government spending on education, for that, we need good leaders... when is the last time we had good leaders? Not one imposed by western democracies? And anyway, if we get good graduates, better nations just lure them off with a better life, and i really don't blame them for leaving... |
haha ![]() very true, we are raped daily by developed countries. i just posted a similar topic. Truth is man, many people are blind, poorly educated, and have no understanding of global issues. my thread is here, read tell me your thoughts - https://www.nairaland.com/908012/honest-do-you-think-nigeria |
I have been fortunate to see different countries. In nigeria, there is a common misconception that one day it will get better, one day this, one day that. I don't share that view, The truth is most people here don't even know what they are missing, they don't see the extent nigeria has become a failed state. One thing about we human beings in general is we like to hope and hope, and believe in the future, not our fault, but just the nature of man. Many people don't see how the developed counties are screwing with us everyday. Do you think our not having industries are just the fault of our leaders? Do you know the leaders are placed there by other powerful nation? There is the popular lady here from IMF, collecting awards abroad, yet people here suffer with her policies. You also go to churches, and see people praying for nigeria, yet many fail to see that even the religious institution of us "closing eyes and praying" was brought about by the colonial masters. They on the other hand, sit and critically examine their social issues. Most of those social issues have been dumped on us. In truth it's a vicious circle, and it is almost impossible for nigeria, and many other 3rd world countries to actually get better. They need us suffering so they can enjoy a life of luxury (Someone has to do the dirty work). Hopefully (i know, but what can i do, but hope also), one day, we will have good leaders who are strong enough to fight against their exploitation policies. Interested in your views. |
