PANDEMONUIM broke out at the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, secretariat in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, following a protest over the list of the party executives in Uwheru and Agbarho wards.
The state Commissioner for Secondary and Basic Education, Professor Partrick Muoboghare, was stabbed by aggrieved party youths from Uwheru, his home town, who accused him of manipulating the list of ward congresses held last year. Several other party members were injured in the fracas.
The aggrieved youths, who stormed the party secretariat in large numbers, disrupted the inauguration ceremony for hours, as party leaders and political office holders in the area ran for safety. The youths destroyed plastic chairs and other property belonging to the party.
According to a source, Professor Muoboghare was stabbed on his upper arm and abdomen. He was rushed to Ufor Hospital, Ughelli and later referred to Oghara Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
The source, who is close to the commissioner, said Muoboghare was receiving medical attention, adding that “he was stabbed by our Uwheru boys, who are opposed to the ward list.”
Pleading anonymity, the source said that the commissioner was placed on oxygen, Saturday, due to excessive bleeding, which led to shortage of blood, adding that one of the suspects was intercepted by them and handed over to the Police in Ughelli.
At press time, efforts were still being made to reach the Ughelli ‘A’ Divisional Police Officer for comment. However, a senior police officer attached to the division confirmed the arrest, saying “it took the combined intervention of the police and Joint Task Force, JTF soldiers to restore normalcy after the ugly incident.
“The police is investigating the matter. One person in our custody has made useful confessions. I can assure you that we will get other members of the gang and they will all be made to face the law. Tokyo beats Madrid, Istanbul to right to host 2020 Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Sunday the Japanese capital city of Tokyo has been picked as the host city of the 2020 Olympic Games.
The IOC disclosed this is in a statement released in the Argentine city of Buenos Aires, saying Tokyo was chosen ahead of Istanbul and Madrid after two rounds of voting.
The voting was conducted during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires on Sept. 7.
“Tokyo received 60 votes to Istanbul’s 36 in the final round, with Madrid having been eliminated in the first round after losing a tie-breaker with Istanbul,” the statement said.
It quoted IOC President Jacques Rogge, whose 12-year term in office comes to an end on Sept. 10, as saying Tokyo presented a very strong technical bid from the beginning.
“Congratulations to the city of Tokyo on its election as host of the 2020 Olympic Games.
“Tokyo presented a very strong technical bid from the outset, and it needed to compete with two such high-calibre bids from Istanbul and Madrid.
“All three cities are capable of staging excellent Games in 2020, but in the end it was Tokyo’s bid that resonated the most with the IOC membership.
“This invites us to `discover tomorrow’ by delivering a well-organised and safe Games that will reinforce the Olympic values while demonstrating the benefits of sports to a new generation,’’ Rogge said.
It would be recalled that Tokyo hosted the Games in 1964 but lost the bid for the hosting right of the 2016 Olympics to Rio de Janeiro. SOURCE:

FEDERAL Government has expressed its readiness to partner with the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) and the Nigerian Singer-Songwriter, Daniel Oyebanjo, popularly known as D’banj in its efforts to projecting the country
to the rest of the world.

The Minister of Tourism, culture and National Orientation, Chief Edem Duke who made this known in Abuja during a separate visit by the D’banji and the PMAN in Abuja noted that Nigeria Music Industry had grown tremendously that it could not be ruled out in any strategy to positively project the country.

“The ministry as a citadel of entertainment sector wishes to work with you to redefine the Nigeria entertainment industry
for better. It takes level headed professional to be able to resonate in the mind of the millions Nigerians,” the minister told D’banj. He added “whatever Nollywood had become today, the country’s music industry played a major role, therefore it will not be out of place to partner with you as it related to the centenary celebration”.

Responding, D’banji said Nigeria Entertainment Industry was one of the biggest in the world, and it had potential to turn the fortune of the country around, if properly managed, urging the federal government not to focus only on the oil.
“Right now, music is very universal and all of people all over the world are now listening to African music, I want every
one to come and see how great Nigeria is, let them not focus only on the oil,” he urged.

In her separate remarks, the President of PMAN, Hajia Amina Dangaji applauded government’s effort to promote the country’s image through the project ‘Fascinating Nigeria’, and promised to assist “to make known our admirable features
and diverse cultures to the world positively”.
