Three Governors – Adams Oshiomhole of Edo, Rochas Okorocha of Imo and Rotimi Amechi of Rivers – did not attend the South-East/South-South governors meeting held on Sunday in Enugu. The meeting was attended by eight of the 11 governors in the two geo-political zones. Governors who attended the meeting include Theodore Orji of Abia; Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom; Liyel Imoke of Cross River; and Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta. Governors Sullivan Chime of Enugu and Peter Obi of Anambra also attended the meeting. Though, governors Martin Elechi of Ebonyi and Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa were physically absent, they were represented by their deputies: Dave Umahi and John Gboribiogha, respectively. Imoke, who is the Chairman of the South-South Governors’ Forum, said the meeting focused on how to promote unity in the zones among other issues. He said the governors were not against the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. He said, “Governors of the South-East and South- South met again today. We deliberated extensively on the same issues that we discussed previously in our last meeting. “Those deliberations are that we will continue to ensure that we focus on economic cooperation and unity and of course, focusing on our collective interest.” http://www.punchng.com/news/amaechi-oshiomhole-okorocha-shun-govs-meeting/

Kidnappers of Augusta Douglas-Ayam, the sister of the Special Adviser to the President on Research and Documentation, Oronto Douglas, have reduced the ransom for her release from N500m to N10m. Douglas-Ayam was abducted from her store last Monday at about 8.30pm, by nine armed men allegedly dressed in army camouflage, who whisked her away at Ogbia town in Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State to an unknown destination in the creeks. The kidnappers reportedly contacted her husband, Mr. Azibayam, at about 2am on Thursday asking for N500m. The ransom was however reduced to N17m on Friday and later to N10m yesterday. It was learnt that the kidnappers slashed down the ransom to N10m after discussing with their victim’s husband. According to a source who pleaded anonymity, “For the first time, the kidnappers were calm in their conversation. They didn’t sound furious this time around. They simply asked that we should look for N10million. “But the woman’s husband begged them to collect N3million. He told them he could only afford N3million. They asked him to increase the money to enable them free his wife,” the source said, expressing optimism that their sister could be set free by Monday. “With the way the conversation is going, we hope that our sister will be released on or before Monday,” he said. http://www.informationng.com/2013/10/douglas-ayams-kidnappers-reduce-ransom-to-n10m-from-n500m.html

President Goodluck Jonathan will be accompanied on the Christian pilgrimage to Israel come October 22, 2013, by no fewer than 19 state governors, as well as some serving ministers. This was disclosed yesterday by President Jonathan during the flag-off of the 2013 Christian pilgrimage to Israel, Rome and Greece. Represented by the Senate President, David Mark, Mr. Jonathan explained that the pilgrimage exercise was not a business trip or jamboree, but a spiritual journey which its importance could not be over-emphasised. He also decried the commercialization of the pilgrimage exercise just as he admonished pilgrims to shun acts capable of denting the country’s image. The president also called on the pilgrims to pray for the genuine transformation of the country, especially as the country was grappling with both political and spiritual challenges. “Nigeria needs both political and spiritual transformation. The country is facing a lot challenges, hence this pilgrimage exercise will serve as an intercessory tool for the nation to seek the face of God in this trying moment of our national life. “Christ is a winner and conqueror! I have no doubt that this exercise would help the nation overcome its current challenges,” President Jonathan stated. Speaking earlier, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Mr John Kennedy Opara, urged the pilgrims to be ambassadors of the country while in the Holy Land. This year’s Christian pilgrimage to Israel is to be performed by about 30, 000 Nigerian pilgrims. http://www.informationng.com/2013/10/christian-pilgrimage-19-governors-ministers-to-accompany-jonathan-to-israel.html |
The Badagry bound carriageway on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, LBE, will be closed to traffic between 7am and 12 noon today, to allow for construction of pedestrian bridge for the blue line rail project along the axis. Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Comrade Kayode Opeifa, who disclosed this, said the move was part of concerted efforts to deliver the first phase of the Blue Line Rail Project, as part of the 10-lane, expansion road project of Lagos- Badagry Expressway.
