TravelRe: Dutch Police Raid West African Migrants' Club by Vicjustice: 6:36pm On Sep 08, 2007
Hear yourself, Chichimma cheesy
You said "they even arrested Osuofia". Are you trying to say that the involvement of Osuofia in the raid means that these people are innocent of the suspicion?
you also admitted that 2 people were indeed involved in scam activities, if so, then the dutch police did very well because, 2 scammers are enough to cause great harm that would make dutch citizens commit suicide if they fall victims: mind you, there are many others who are involved in scam or other criminal activites in one way or the other: I don't accept that of the one hundred and eleven people (Nigerians) that were arrested, only two were actually fraudulent. These are the 2 confirmed.
You live in the west, you should know that Europeans don't tolerate the slightest risk that pose threat to security.
As for me, i believe that the presence of Osuofia means that the guys might be involved in 419 activities; Is Osuofia not the artist of the scam music/video "I go chop your dollar"?
  @Poster:
Do you refere to Germany as "Dutch"?
Dutch is, (of) or relating to the Netherlands or its people or culture.
I suppose you mean Deutsch, which is of Germany (Deutschland)

Nairaland users in the house,
i submitted my application last week but there was no document showing that i made any accomodation arrangments with the school, but i submitted a cousins letter of support and mortgage statment, page of passport showing residence permit, his house is in london, while my school is in scotland.hope that won't be used against me.although i submitted an email showing i had 20%scholarship,and letter of sponsorship from my company.
DEEBOY29
Your's is one of the most badly prepared applications i've ever heard of. You know that the Embassy always look for reasons for refusal rather than for approval. Even if there is accommodation available, i'm in doubt that they will take it into consideration since you've not secured it.
If i were you, i'd call the embassy to hold on while i produce further vital documents to support my application: that would be better than to let them decide it the way it is now, you don't stand a good chance

It seems you guys are only concerned on the aspect of pidgin English or the "short-cut" writings, that really doesn't bother me: but what bothers me is the fact that sometimes, it's difficult to understand some of the points that a poster is trying to make, hasn't it occurred to you that you have to really try hard to understand some articles, and yet, you just don't get the entire points?
Well, it has happened to me a lot of times.
Every body does make mistakes, i've seen some remarkable errors in many of my posts also, so, none is perfect: but i should bring to your notice that this sort of (short cut) spellings and the excessive use of the pidgin English do influence our accents, written and oral English: many of us speak in the same manners that we write.
First of all, i think we should work on our oral English, it's of no good to use short cuts when you've not mastered the standard usage or spellings.
Some people can't pronounce FUTURE, FUEL or THIRTY to the understanding of the Europeans, worse still, many people do not even know the difference between GREECE and GREEK neither do they use the words properly: and they are all in Europe creating the impression of poor reputation to Nigerian educational sectors

@Vicjustice, good one there. I would advise that if you are writing such a post, you need to thoroughly read through it to ensure that you do not make any mistakes, or else, end. Corrections are required in some of your texts.
Dear, you're absolutely right, i do read my posts over even after posting them, and sometimes, i do find errors, and like i said, no one is perfect; but we just have to try to minimise errors especially ones that are too obvious. cheesy

When you ask Europeans (who aren't from English speaking countries) whether they speak English, they usually answer saying "little" even if they speak well enough.
When you meet Nigerians in/on the streets of Europe, and you ask them if they speaks English (because you don't know if they're Nigerians), they'd answer "YES" or "of course" if they're in good moods, and if in bad moods, they'd get offended saying "what sort of question is that?".
But in some real cases, the people who say they speak a "little" actually speak the little in good commands, and it is easier for the English people to understand them than the Nigerians who claim English is their in-built talent.
Believe me, some of our English usages are really embarrassing. I know some guys who can't converse on phone with people who are not Nigerians: the accents are terrible and the English commands or usage are awful: it would be easier if the non Nigerians can read their lips, but that doesn't happen on phone.
I've even heard some Igbo guys calling it Engrish or Engnish embarassed
There was this Edo girl who was repatriated at Dublin airport, she had a tourist/visiting visa, when asked by the immigration officer at the point of entry her purpose of visiting, she ignorantly answered "terrorist", and this led to further questions and interrogations. They knew that she was innocent and ignorant, but the immigration officers found enough reasons to send her back to Nigeria on the ground that they were "not satisfied that she merited her visa"
Some Nigerians haven't mastered the simple English, yet they try to fake American accents even with their awful command of the language.
Also, here in Nairaland, sometimes, it is difficult to read and understand some articles in this forum, Though, wrong spellings could be pardoned (none is above mistakes), and it's also understandable when people misuse words (for example they misuse BEING for BEEN) and also, many people try to use "short cuts" words like DATZ Y, 4RM, HOLZ, and WUD etc, as if they are sending sms from mobile phones where spaces are limited: this makes other users sometimes read over and over and over again just to get the points that a poster is trying to make. Sometimes, i really try hard to get the points of some posts, and still i don't get the full meaning.
I blame the pidgin English for our poor English, this sort of English has deeply influenced our usage of the standard English, even our learned people sometimes find themselves in difficulties trying to express some points which they can easily expressed in pidgin English.
How many of you now hate me? wink

Don't i get anything to say my case is being dealt with like an acknowlegement letter or something.
Usually, they don't send anything (like acknowledgement letter), they don't even correspond with you until the due time, it's the system of the embassy to ignore you until it's time to respond. Appeal is for the patient people

Yes, it's normal, most appeal cases take up to six or seven months. You might be furtunate to have it treated in shorter period, though

@Vicjustice,@everyone
Hello are u dey?Well to put things straight, i will need your advise on the issue of working holiday visa/visiting visa to Ireland.
I have a family over there that can probably accomodate me but though they are Irish. my question is aw easy is it to get ireland visa, and i will like you to know that i just graduated from Uni here and will be going for NYSC feb.2008.So i just want to come over to Ireland before Camp.
i need your advise please
Hey, Guseman
  I dey kamkpe smiley
My G, there is no EU visa that's too easy or too difficult to get, (though i heard that Ireland visa is a kind of tough, but people do get it). You just need to have the right documents and give the right impressions. Like i always say, the MOST IMPORTANT DOCUMENT is a credible and solid evidence that you will return to Nigeria before your visa expires.
If the family members you have in Ireland are doing fine, and if you bear same surname with them, then, you might stand better chance for a visiting visa, (that's if they approve your coming and are willing to sponsor you).
Please, do not apply for a visa if you know that you can't satisfy the Irish embassy with some impressive reasons to return to Nigeria after your visit because, these guys don't really care about the authenticity of your documents or the genuineness of your application, what they are mostly concerned about is the assurance that you'll certainly return home.
There's no harm in trial, you might just be lucky, but you really have to carefully examine yourself and your documents before going to the Irish Embassy, it's not as considerate as the UK embassy.
As for part time or temporal jobs, there are lots of them, that shouldn't be a problem.
   Goodluck, and keep us informed.

@bedo

congratulations. you are lucky. smiley

don't mind these schools jare. the living expenses are sometimes over exagerrated. angry

all you have to do is cut your coat according to your size. what you need now is survival tips from the 'ijebu' wink point of view.

i do not know much about notthingham but the same survival tips apply to most parts of UK and scotland.

regarding accommodation, if you search ''well well', through newspapers, (going through estate agents will cost you more money because you have to pay for their commission and adminstrative charges), you should see a house of about £250-£300 monthly. you might even be lucky to meet someone at your school that you guys can share the room together, so thats about £150 monthly

try and get a room as close to your university as possible. this way you will spend less on accommodation. if you enjoy walking (which you must learn to in UK), you can get a place within 20 mins walk to your school.

don't worry about food. with £20, go to tesco. bag go full, hand go pay you.
tip: stick to products made exclusively for tesco stores, they are cheaper. wink

don't get a contract phone just yet. stick to pay as you go, until you find your feet. those things are attractive o! especially all the ''100 free minutes, etc', but don't get tempted. Even if you are, stick to a £25 monthly contract. even if you exceed your free minutes, at least an extra £5-£10 should cover that.

now, regarding job, almost the same thing applies in all parts of UK.
https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-71734.0.html
go through this link, it will help. since the school is giving you 75% scholarship, talk them into getting a job for you with them. it might be security or something small on a part-time basis.

hmm. the 20hrs per week issue. do all the work you can during the weekend.ie. long hours. then try to get jobs at pubs, bars, etc. they offer ''cash at hand''. so, your NI is not affected.

so don't be worried, it might be tough and rough initially, but with the Grace and Favour of God, He will see you through. smiley cheesy

Cheers!
Very thoughtful, it covers it all

diaspora this, diaspora that.[/quote]You're right, only Nigerians use this word. The word is supposed to be: the exodus of the Jews out of the palestinian lands, to settle in other countries, the body of Jews (or Jewish communities) outside Palestine or modern Israel. Though, there are some secondry definitions which do not directly indicate that Nigerians abroad are Diasporas.

As for Colchester, yes, I live there, aged 39. I have my own house - bought my first property aged 23, and still in uni. I'm not a faceless person who hides behind a keyboard, hence my age, real name and location are on my profile for all to see.

I think I'm doing pretty good, but I don't consider myself above any Nigerian in any country, even if they wash toilets, or carry excrement on their heads for a living.

It's not your question that got folk's backs up, but the inflection behind your words, and your obvious contempt for other Nigerians, who happen to be not so fortunate as yourself.
