Education / MAPOLY To Be Upgraded To A University Of Science And Technology by vickysomtee: 6:42pm On Feb 01, 2017
Ogun State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill upgrading Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, to Moshood Abiola University of Technology .

Adeyinka Mafe, the Majority Leader, moved the motion for the third reading of the bill during plenary in Abeokuta and was seconded by the Minority Leader, Olawale Alausa.

The bill was originally titled: “HB No. 10/OG/2017- A bill for a law to provide for the Establishment of Moshood Abiola University of Technology and for matters of Administration and Discipline of Students Connected Therewith.”

The bill is now entitled: “A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Establishment of Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology and for Matters of Administration and Discipline of Students Connected Therewith.’’

Victor Fasanya, the Chairman, House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, moved the motion for the adoption of the committee’s report and seconded by Adejuwon Olufowobi
Presenting the report of the committee, Mr. Fasanya said that a stakeholders forum was held on the bill and the inputs of the stakeholders were put into consideration.

He described the bill as historic, adding that it would encourage the people of the state to venture into science and technology.

Suraj Adekunbi, the Speaker, ordered that the clean copy of the bills be forwarded to Governor Ibikunle Amosun for his assent.
MAPOLY has, for 37 years, diligently assisted in the upholding of educational standards and values in the country. This is evident in the quantity and quality of its graduates. Its strides in Mass Communication, Accounting, Science Laboratory Technology, Engineering, etc., has made it primus inter pares. It is often said that there is hardly any media house in the country without at least a MAPOLY Mass Communication graduate.

Engineering students of the institution over the years produced electronic ballot box, tricycle, fuel-less generator, petrol-kerosene dual generator, solar powered streetlights and lawnmower, sieving machine etc.
I strongly believe that the proposed Moshood Abiola University of Technology will join the league of top universities in and outside the shores of Nigerian.

Education / LAUTECH ASUU Will Not Resume Academic Activities Despite Resumption by vickysomtee: 6:20pm On Feb 01, 2017
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso chapter, on Monday stated conditions that must be met before the ongoing industrial action will finally come to an end which will see academic activities fully resume in the school.

It will be recalled that the school announced January 27th, 2017 as the reopening date of the school.

However, ASUU rejected the resumption date, declaring that it had not called off its industrial action which began on Sept. 19, 2016.

According to the chairman of ASUU LAUTECH chapter, Dr Biodun Olaniran, while the school had resumed, academic activities were yet to commence as a result of the ongoing strike.

In his words, “Government should provide an agreeable plan of defraying the indebtedness of the outstanding N7.1 billion to the university.

“They should issue a clear commitment to the settlement of arrears of sundry allowances accumulated over the years,’’ he said.

“Salary is not the real issue. Our major demand borders most on the funding of the institution.

“Internally Generated Revenue can never be a substitute to the funding of the university,’’ he said.

Education / "Call Off Strike Or No Salary" - FG Tells Polytechnic Lecturers by vickysomtee: 1:23pm On Feb 01, 2017
On Tuesday, January 31, the federal government while speaking through a representative in Abuja indicated that it would implement the ‘No work, No pay’ rule on polytechnic lecturers currently on strike.

Chris Ngige who is the minister of labour and employment, appealed with the lecturers involved in the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) industrial action, to suspend their 5-day warning strike.

The lecturers had embarked on the warning strike on Monday to protest non-payment of salaries among other issues.

According to NAN, Ngige said: “I wish to remind the Trade Unions that there is nothing like a “Warning Strike” in our National Industrial Relations System (NIRS)."

The minister said the strike was subject to all the rules governing strike in the world of work. Noting that Section 43 of the Trade Disputes Act, CAP. T8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, LFN, 2004, would be applied regarding the law of “No Work No Pay’’.

He assured listeners that the FG was ready and willing to fully dialogue with the members of the union.

“The union had declared its intention to embark on a 5-day warning strike, effective from January 31, 2017.

“Government will open an unhindered channel of communication with all stakeholders and shall maintain this.
“Moreover, the Federal Ministry of Education has been discussing issues with ASUP on the concerns raised.

“Therefore, it is important for Trade Unions to embrace social dialogue in the pursuit and attainment of the economic and social interests of their members anchored on equity, natural justice and agreed procedures," he concluded.

The minister, therefore, appealed to the trade unions to embrace dialogue as the Federal Government is fully committed to peaceful resolution of all the issues at stake.

Meanwhile, only recently, President Muhammadu Buhari had to appeal to the leadership of Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) to call off their strike, and to understand that the nation is income recession, hence the inability of his government to meet their demands.

Education / Jamb, Nscdc Set To Raid Cyber Cafes Engaging In Fake Utme Registration by vickysomtee: 2:25pm On Jan 29, 2017
JAMB has announced it will embark on a national raid of cyber cafes, ahead of its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

JAMB’s Head of media and information, Dr Fabian Benjamin spoke to newsmen on Friday, January 27, in Lagos and explained that the exercise would be jointly carried out with the officials of the NSCDC.

Dr Benjamin explaining the reason for the raid said, the raid was meant to smash the operations of some syndicates who are operating cyber cafes to print fake UTME registration numbers and application documents to prospective candidates.

He also said that four suspects have already been arrested in Ekiti for printing and selling fake registration documents for the 2017 examination.

The media head said: “This development is an eye-opener that same could be happening in other parts of the country.

"We shall, in collaboration with the NSCDC, commence a national raid of all cyber cafe in the country, any moment from now.

“We will not fold our arms and watch some elements defraud Nigerians, parents in particular, who desire education for their children.

“These persons arrested in Ekiti were holed out in their cyber café, where they have been carrying out their illegal activities and had defrauded prospective candidates to the tune of over N10 million.

“We had a synergy with NSCDC, which led to the discovery of serious illegal manipulation of JAMB registration forms, numbers as well as admission letters."

The media head also warned candidates to avoid falling prey to the activities of the suspects.

“We had warned severally that we had yet to commence the sales of the 2017 registration documents, and that candidates should be patient because we are putting finishing touches to the entire examination process.

“This is because we want to tackle all the hitches that had been associated with the examination in the past years and make it almost 100 per cent hitch-free.

“As soon as this is achieved, and we are set to roll out the registration documents, we will do massive sensitisation.

“Candidates must realise that no cyber cafe is authorised to do any form of registration, as candidates who defy this warning are doing so at their own risk,’’ he said.

Do not misuse it. Embark on rewarding activities and avoid the so called campus attraction”, he said.

Prof. Nwajiuba noted that the University was geared towards equipping students with the right skills that would make them compete favourably with their peers anywhere in the world. He further stressed that the University has zero tolerance to cultism, examination malpractice, drug abuse, prostitution, sex and money-for-marks and other social vices, advising the students to mind their studies and be of good behavior if they intend to succeed in the University.

She went ahead to disclose that she initially was not a brilliant student. But got the determination to work hard after so many failures.

On the social front, Omotuyi mentioned she never had a boyfriend as she understood that there is time for everything and spend most of her time with female friends and fellowship members and sometimes watch movies.
