Blasphemy, a serious threats to peaceful coexistence.

Crime / History Of Blasphemy In Northern Nigeria by victor4ekele(m): 1:18pm On Aug 17, 2020
GENESIS OF ISLAMIC BLASPHEMY IN NIGERIA
Recently, a Kano state Shariah Court sentenced Yahaya Sharif (22 years old) to death by hanging for the offence of blasphemy against the prophet. He was accused of having blasphemed in his song which he circulated on
WhatsApp in March of 2020. Following this incident, we want to critically look at the origin of the blasphemy in Nigeria especially in the Northern part.
First, what is Blasphemy? Blasphemy is the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for any religion's deity or deities. From the concept, blasphemy is not only necessary the idea of opening criticizing one religion. But when you speaks or show lack of respect for one religion, it is BLASPHEMY.
To Northern Nigeria, blasphemy is mostly associated to Islamic religion because there are predominantly Muslims and they have sharia courts in their states. Nigeria as a country operates two
court systems. Both systems can punish blasphemy. The Constitution provides a
Customary (secular) system and a system that
incorporates Sharia . The Customary system
prohibits blasphemy by section 204 of Nigeria's
Criminal Code. The Section 204 is entitled "Insult to
religion".
Twelve state from the north practice Sunni Muslim which makes other Islamic sect to be minor and their outrage are tender as blasphemy.
Sharia court judgement on blasphemy is for those that speaks or act against Islams and it is unlawful. The prohibition against blasphemy in the
Criminal Code and the prohibition recognized by
Sharia may not be lawful because Section 38 of the Constitution entitles every Nigerian to
freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, and Section 39 gives every Nigerian the right to freedom of expression.
There are various cases of blasphemy in the northern Nigeria such as:
a Muslim mob in the town of
Sara in Jigawa state burned a police outpost
and injured about twelve people over an alleged
blasphemy against the Islamic prophet
Mohammed on On 19 June 2009.
On 9 August 2008, a Muslim mob also in Kano state beat to death a fifty-year-old Muslim man who blasphemed Mohammed.
On 20 April 2008, Muslim rioters in the city of
Kano burned the shops and vehicles of Christian
merchants after one allegedly disrespect
Mohammed.
On 9 February 2008, a Muslim mob rioted in the
town of Sumaila in Kano state which resulted in killing of many Christians.
In October 2007, a sharia court convicted Sani
Kabili, a Christian and a father of six, of the town
of Kano, of blasphemy against Mohammed. The
court sentenced Kabili to three years in prison.
In February 2009, an appeal court overturned the
conviction.
On 28 September 2007, a Muslim mob rioted at
Tudun Wada in Kano state. The mob killed nine
Christians, burned several churches, and
destroyed the homes and businesses of some non-Muslims. The Muslims complained that
Christian students had drawn a picture of Mohammed.
On 21 March 2007, a mob of Muslim students
and neighbourhood extremists beat to death
Christianah Oluwatoyin Oluwasesin, a mother of
two and a teacher at Government Secondary
School of Gandu in the city of Gombe. A student
complained that Oluwasesin, a Christian, had
touched a bag which allegedly contained a
Quran, and had thereby defiled the Quran.
In February 2006 in Bauchi state, Florence
Chuckwu, a Christian teacher, confiscated a copy of a Quran from a pupil who was reading it
during an English lesson. The incident provoked
rioting by Muslims. The riot killed more than
twenty Christians and destroyed two churches.
On 20 November 2002, Muslim and Christian mobs rampaged in the cities of Kaduna and Abuja because of newspaper publication suggesting that Mohammed would probably have taken a wife
from among the contestants from a beauty contest.
On 14 July 1999, in the village of Randali in
Kebbi state, a Muslim mob beheaded Abdullahi
Umaru. The mob accused Umaru of blasphemy
against Mohammed.
From all this cases, we can clearly see that blasphemy is not longer a new thing in Nigeria and some core northerners support the idea of blasphemy and believe blasphemers must be dealt with.

Politics / Remembering The Death Of Prince Abubakar Audu After Two Years by victor4ekele(m): 7:42am On Nov 23, 2017
Prince Abubakar Audu (24 October 1947 – 22 November 2015) was twice the Governor of Nigeria's Kogi state. [1] His first tenure was from January 1992 until November 1993 and the second from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2003. He died due to a bleeding ulcer shortly after the announcement of the election results on 22 November 2015, while seeking re-election on the platform of Nigeria's ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC).
Early life and education
Prince Abubakar Audu, first Executive Governor of Kogi State was born on 27 October 1947, [2] to the family of his Royal Highness, the late Pa Audu Oyidi, Orego Atta of Igala Land and the paramount ruler of Ogbonicha-Alloma in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
He started his education at the then N.A. Junior Primary School, Alloma, and later N.A Senior School Ankpa, from where he proceeded to Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha. He later transferred to the Jos Commercial College where he obtained both the GCE O and A level. [3]
Professional career
After a stint as a bank worker, Prince Audu later proceeded to London from 1975-1978 where he studied banking and personnel management, obtaining professional qualification as a certified secretary, and as a Fellow of the Association of International Accountants of London, as well as fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Industrial Administration of Nigeria.
Audu's banking career lasted for a total of 25 years, which he spent with First Bank - formerly known as Standard Bank. Here, he served in various capacities at management level until 1991. He also made history as the bank's first training officer of African descent and also as one of the first black senior management staff of Standard Chartered Bank in London and New York.
In 1991, he was appointed Executive Director of FSB International Bank PLC. [4]
Politics and public service
Audu's sojourn into public service began in 1986 when he was appointed as Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning in the Old Benue state. He served in this capacity until 1988 when the cabinet was dissolved. He then returned to First Bank of Nigeria PLC as a General Manager.
In August 1991, Kogi state was created from parts of the old benue and Kwara states. This coincided with one of Nigeria's many previous encounters with democracy, and Audu, being part of those who had advocated for the creation of the state and a notable son of the soil, was invited to contest for governorship. He contested on the platform of the National Republican Convention (NRC) and won the election held in November, 1991. He was subsequently sworn in as the first executive governor of Kogi state in January 1992.
In 1998, democracy was again re-introduced and Audu, now with the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP), was elected again with over 700,000 votes while his opponent hardly recorded 50% of the vote cast. He was sworn in on 29 May 1999 as the 2nd Executive Governor of Kogi State.
Major achievements
Infrastructure
His socio-economic contribution in the state is to date a point of reference to the generality of the people and many aspiring leaders. Some of his major achievements during his brief first term of office include the establishment of three different housing schemes for public officers consisting of over 1,500 housing units in Lokoja, the transformation of Lokoja township with asphalt roads, street lights, aesthetic roundabouts, the construction of inter-township and rural roads, over 75 electrification schemes and 50 water projects.
Other include the founding of Kogi State Polytechnic, the establishment of a television station, radio station (both AM and FM), a state newspaper and the transformation of the colonial residence of Lord Lugard into an Ultra Modern Government House Complex, the construction of office blocks for ministries as the new state had no office accommodation, the construction of shopping arcade complex to enhance commercial activities, among others. [5]
Abuja State Liaison Office, Sports Complex and Confluence Beach Hotel
He also pioneered the construction of the first ultra modern state liaison office in Abuja. His administration also built an ultra modern stadium and a five star hotel in Lokoja, the Confluence Beach Hotel.
Obajana Cement Factory
He also took steps to woo prospective investors to harness the numerous solid mineral potentials in the State. The big prize was the establishment of
Obajana Cement Factory. The project, which was on going before he left office, attracted the support of the United State Government. During the visit of former President Bill Clinton to Nigeria, the State Government signed the agreement with the US Trade Development Agency (TDA) for a grant to finalize the feasibility work on the project. The cement project is now operational.
Establishment of the Kogi State University, Anyigba
The establishment of a state university, Kogi State University Anyigba, is another testimony to the vision and resourcefulness. The foundation stone was laid on 30 November 1999, when former President Olusegun Obasanjo, visited the state. About a year later, the President returned to Anyigba during a state visit to commission the University complex. According to a report of a visitation panel to the university from the Nigeria University Commission, the institution was then described as the fastest growing university in the country. The university received tremendous international support, which included an affiliation programme to Morgan State University Baltimore. Also, seven visiting professors from various universities in the United States were at the university to review its curriculum and align it with their own universities and prepare the students for exchange programme to give the university an international acceptability.
Prince Audu completed several landmark projects within four years. They include: 250 units Housing Estate, a Sport Complex, a Specialist Eye Hospital and 25 other medical Institutions. Others are: a Special Government Girls Secondary School on student exchange programme, 350 borehole schemes, 300 kilometers of township roads, the procurement of 100 transit buses and completion of 40 rural electrification projects.
He was also named the best governor in the 1999-2003 dispensation, despite being a governor on the platform of the opposition, the ANPP.
Relationship with International Community
A highly traveled politician, Prince Audu brought so many honors to the country through his personal relationships with foreign statesmen. It is known that he enjoys a very intimate relationship with the former British Prime Minister, Mr. John Major. In 1993, he and the member of his family were special guests of the British Prime Minister at No 10, Downing Street where he hosted them to a State Banquet. Also in 1993, His Excellency attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Cyprus. His connection with the international community saved Nigeria during the heady days of Shonekan administration from economic embargo. In December 1999, he was on the delegation of President Olusegun Obasanjo during the State visit to Germany. On every account, Prince Audu who maintains a good circle of friends across the country is by every judgment a great patriot, visionary, humanist and nationalist. The outstanding achievements of Prince Abubakar Audu have been acknowledged by several organizations within and outside Nigeria through awards and honours presented to him.
Subsequent Gubernatorial Bids
Prince Abubakar Audu contested in the 2003 Kogi State gubernatorial elections but lost. His loss at the poll has been attributed to electoral rigging and other forms of manipulation, and 2003 is generally acknowledged in Nigeria's history as the beginning of a period of fraudulent electoral process carried out by the then PDP-led Federal Government.
In 2007 when election bells rang again, Prince Audu went to the polls, and was again defeated by massive electoral fraud committed by the then incumbent - Ibrahim Idris. Prince Abubakar Audu thereupon went to the Election Tribunal who nullified that election, and ordered fresh elections. Again, Prince Abubakar Audu contested against Ibrahim Idris, and again, was defeated by a fraudulent electoral process.
In 2012, Audu again contested against a new comer to the field, Captain Idris Ichalla Wada, and again Audu was defeated by another election fraught with fraud. The result of the particular election were allegedly announced while collation was still on-going.
Corruption Allegations
When Prince Audu left office in 2003, he was charged by Nigeria's anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), with corruption. This case has been on for twelve years and many say it was coined as an attempt by the then ruling PDP to smear Audu's image, especially in light of the achievements recorded during his tenure.
He has responded to these allegations, stating that while he was governor, the state received less than N400million as monthly allocation, and that it would have been impossible to embezzle the N12 billion that the agency claims he did when he received less than N19 billion in total, yet embarked on many projects.
The Agency has also changed the figure he allegedly embezzled over the years; previously, they stated N1 billion, later N4 billion, and now, N12 billion. Audu has also described the EFCC case as being politically motivated. [6]
2015 Gubernatorial Run
Prince Abubakar Audu emerged as the candidate of the APC at the August 28th Kogi State gubernatorial primary election. Subsequently, he announced James Abiodun Faleke, a legislator, as his running mate.
Death
Prince Audu died of a bleeding ulcer on 22 November 2015, shortly before INEC announced the Kogi State Gubernatorial Election as inconclusive. He had recorded more votes than his opponent in the elections but due to the dilemma created by his sudden death, his Party APC, chose the runner up of the Primary Elections (Yahaya Bello ) as the candidate to replace him for the in-concluded elections.

Business / Reasons Why You Should Be Self Employed Rather Than A Paid Employed by victor4ekele(m): 4:52am On Nov 21, 2017
Those who choose self employment as a career usually do so for five basic reasons: personal satisfaction, Independence, profit, jobs security and status. Looking vividly at this basic reasons accordingly:

PERSONAL SATISFACTION
To some people, the chief reward of working for yourself is personal satisfaction. Personal satisfaction means doing what you want with your life. Being self employed will enable you to spend each work day in a job you enjoy. For example, if you like photography, you may start your own studio.
Each time a customer is pleased with a portrait, you will receive personal satisfaction. You may receive satisfaction from aiding the community in which you live. Self employed persons supply goods and services from other local enterprise, borrow money from local banks and pay taxes.
INDEPENDENCE
Another reasons of being a self employed persons is independence. Independence is freedom from control of others. You are able to use your knowledge, skills and abilities as you see fit.
When you are self employed you are driven by spirit of self -reliance and individual survival. Compared to those who work for others, self employed persons have more freedom of action. They are in charge and can make decisions without first having to get the approval of someone else.
PROFIT AND INCOME
One of the major rewards expected when starting a new business is profit. Profit is the amount of income left after all expenses have been paid. Profits go to the owner of a business. Being self employed, you would be able to control your income.
Very often, increased time and efforts, put into the enterprise results in increase income. This is not often the case when you work for someone else. How much do you want to earn each year after your business is running smoothly? Do you want to make 2,5,10 million naira or more a year? It's important to decide on income because different types of business have different income potential. A fast food restaurant has one income potential while a small manufacturing business may have quite another.
It's probably tempting to set your goal at a very high level -say 15 million naira a year. Many businesses have the long run potential of being successful : however, many businesses don't become profitable very quickly. One way to establish a personal income goal is to answer the question "how much do i want to be making (per year) six years from now? "
JOB SECURITY
Many enterprises are created by persons who are seeking the kind of job security that is not available elsewhere. Job security is the assurance of continued employment and income. Self employed persons cannot be laid off. Fired or forced to retired at a certain age.
STATUS
Status is a term used to describe a person rank of position. Self employed persons received attention and recognition through customers contact and public exposure. As a result.
They may enjoy status above that of many other types of workers. Closely related to social status is pride in ownership : most people enjoy seeing their names on building, vehicles and advertisement. To some degree, all people seek status. Business have their status too. There are high status Business and low status business. For example, garbage collection is a low status business. Some people are very interested in the status of their business and others are not interested at all. It may be an important consideration in selecting the type of business for you.
The key is to choose a business that has a status that you'll feel comfortable with.
With all this, it is wise to be self employed than being a paid employed.

List of Courses and Nigerian Universities Known For Offering Them
Note: This list is based on the opinion of a UNIUYO student.
Universities are not new to Nigeria. In fact, Nigeria had Universities before the advent of independence.
This shows that Nigerians admonish and appreciate literacy.
From the first generation Universities of the 1950s and 60s to the second generation of the 70s and 80s and the third generation of the 90s and the 21st century, Universities have sprung up in the country in all forms.
We have Federal, State and Privately owned Universities in Nigeria as well as Specialised Universities in the fields of Education, Engineering and Technology, Petroleum Resources, Management Science and Health Science/Technology.
Everyday new Universities are built, Colleges of Education and Polytechnics are gradually becoming obsolete and some have the fortune of being converted into Universities.
Because of the proliferation of Universities in the country, some youngsters and students find it difficult to select schools to attend. Although this seems like a paradox (because the higher the number of schools, the better the choices) but the truth is that not all schools are the same.
Some Universities have, over the years, proven themselves to be excellent and extra-ordinary in training students of certain fields/disciplines; both disciplinary, vocational and professional. It is not that other schools do not offer the same courses or do well, it is simply that a particular school has a well trained faculty, standard structures and facilities, rich legacies and superb alumni networks.
Prospective students will eventually do better if they select Universities that are well known for the courses they’ve applied for.
Without being too verbose, the aim of this thread is simple: to highlight some Nigerian Universities and the disciplines/courses they are well known for. The schools I present are those I am well familiar with.
This means I may not include schools I don’t have sufficient data on. However, as a reader, you may help me in that by adding schools you are familiar with and disciplines you know. This list is wholly personal and based on subjective findings.
My data was generated based on alumni strength, the amount of academics the schools produce in the field, the nature and class of results produced by students in the department, the output of students(practicals, development, research, etc), physical structures present in the departments, accreditation status and stability of department, number of academic staff as well as their academic pedigree, number and impact factors of journals and academic outputs from department, etc.
These were sourced from University’s websites, internet research and other sources. As a reader, you may not agree with what I’ve written but in that case, feel free to add your own findings. Learning, as they say, is a continuous process. This list is presented below:
